S tatement of Purpose: The treadmill is an exercise machine that enables users to walk or run, in place, on a moving sur- face.

2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE AND A CTIVITY Z ONE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE AND A CTIVITY Z ONE O VERVIEW The computerized display console on the treadmill allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console, the user can track fitness improvement from one workout to the next.
8 2.2 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE AND A CTIVITY Z ONE D ESCRIPTIONS This section lists and describes the functions for the buttons on the T ouchscreen Display on the Life Fitness T readmill. See Section 4, The Workouts , for detailed information on using the console to set up workout s.
9 D. USB: Allows the user to access previously saved workout setup data bypassing the workout setup procedure and immediately entering a workout. E. SCREEN LOCK/UNLOCK: (Cannot be used during a workout.) Freezes the screen for the purpose of routine main- tenance/screen cleaning.
10 T YPES OF W ORKOUT S ETUP S CREENS G OAL S ETUP S CREENS • Goal T ype: The default setting of Goal T ype is TIME (length of workout) allowing the user to set a predeter- mined length of time for the workout. Users may also choose a more advanced Goal T ype such as DIST ANCE, CALORIES, or TIME IN ZONE (only available for heart rate programs).
11 A1. WORKOUT LABEL / MINI PROFILE AREA: Shows the user the workout type, shows a miniature profile when media is active and covering the main profile area. B1. WORKOUT PROFILE WINDOW: This window displays workout progress using one of four workout landscapes.
R1. INCLINE DISPLA Y / CONTROL: (Hill, Random, S port T raining 5K and 10K) Level refers to a range of incline per- centages. The treadmill features 20 levels, with Level 1 having the lowest average incline grade and Level 20 hav- ing the highest. See Section 4.
13 4) TV If Favorites and/or Channel List options are enabled, an Options menu will be enabled for selecting a desired channel selection interface. A2. TV CONTROLS: Use to access TV viewing options. F A VORITES: If enabled, use to toggle to Favorite Channel selection menu.

7) A CTIVITY Z ONE The Ergo TM bar includes an Activity Zone which allows the user to quickly adjust the incline and speed during a workout. The Activity Zone also includes a QUICK ST ART button, W ALK, JOG and RUN preset buttons and a STOP button. A3.
2.3 R EADING R ACK AND A CCESSOR Y T RA YS The display console design includes a built-in reading rack (A) allowing a book or magazine to be supported during the workout.
17 3 H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results.
3.2 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE L IFEPULSE TM S YSTEM T o use the treadmill’s Lifepulse system to check the heart rate during a workout, grasp the stainless steel sensors on the Ergo TM front handlebar . T wo sensors are located on each of the handlebars.
19 4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS The following workouts are preprogrammed for the Life Fitness Treadmill. QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising and it bypasses the step s involved in selecting a specific workout pro- gram. After the QUICK ST ART key is pressed, a constant level workout begins.
20 A DV ANCED W ORKOUTS ADV ANCED WORKOUTS are customized workouts designed for the advanced user not used in connection with a per- sonal trainer . These workouts include: FIT TESTS workouts measure cardiovascular fitness and can be used to monitor improvements in endurance every four to six weeks.
21 4.2 U SING THE W ORKOUTS Select a workout. See the chart at the beginning of Section 4.3 for an overview of the steps required to set up each work- out. 1) B EGINNING A W ORKOUT There are three ways to being a workout: Quick S tart, Select Workout (see Section 4.
22 The Pace Goal feature is designed to allow the user to set the pace of a workout. The user sets a pace goal during the workout setup. Once the goal is met, the workout automatically goes into a cool down phase and ends afterward.
4) E NTERING W ORKOUT V ALUES AGE: When prompted to enter Age, use the ARROW KEYS to increase or decrease the displayed age to the correct value, or key in the correct value with the NUMERIC KEYP AD, and press ENTER.

26 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS Q UICK S T ART QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the specific step s of selecting a specific workout pro- gram. After the QUICK ST ART button (T ouchscreen Display), a MANUAL workout begins.
27 1 to 9 minutes: A workout with a duration of less than 10 minutes is insufficient for the HILL program to complete all four phases adequately . The program, therefore, condenses a workout of this duration at various st ages. 10 to 19 minutes: The interval durations initially are set at 30 seconds for a 10-minute workout.
28 H EART R AT E I NTERV AL This program also combines the standard HILL workout profile with the concept of Heart Rate Zone Training. The default target heart rate* is calculated as 80 percent of the theoretical maximum † (HRmax), but the user can adjust the target rate during the workout setup.
29 H ILL + W ORKOUTS H ILL P LUS The Life Fitness patented HILL PLUS workouts give even more ways to vary interval training. Based on the same princi- ples as the HILL workout, Hill Plus workouts are .

34 4.4 M AXIMIZING W ORKOUTS ON A L IFE F ITNESS T READMILL S ELECTING A L EVEL The steps for setting up a HILL, RANDOM, SPORT TRAINING 5K, and SPORT TRAINING 10K workout include select- ing a level. The word “level” refers to a range of incline percent ages.
35 I P OD C OMP A TIBILITY This compatibility makes it possible for iPod users to plug in and charge their iPods and iPod nanos, control their iPod playlists from the console and watch iPod-delivered video on the equipment's large LCD screen.
36 5 S YSTEM O PTIONS M ENU 5.1 U SING THE S YSTEM O PTIONS M ENU Users can use the Systems Options feature to change default settings, or to enable or disable certain programs or dis- plays on the treadmill console, and to run systems checks. T o enter the Systems Options, press SELECT WORKOUT .
37 5.2 C ONFIGURA TION M ENU M ANAGER Allows the user to set unit defaults, configure workout duration, set st and by , and program custom messages. Choosing Manager accesses Manager ’ s Configuration 1 . The forward button on the bottom right of the screen opens Manager ’s Configuration 2 .
38 C USTOM M ESSAGE (D EF AUL T :E NABLED ) This configuration allows for a custom message to be displayed across the Home Screen. Creating/Changing a Custom Message — Upon entering the Custom Message Setup screen, a message can be entered using the on-screen keyboard.
39 TV C HANNEL F A VORITES Opens the Favorite Channel configuration screen. Up to 9 favorite channels can be stored for quick access during a workout. This feature may be enabled or disabled. NOTE: Setting channels using the auto channel setup procedure, as instructed in TV SETUP , is recommended before attempting to setup favorite channels.

When finished touch anywhere on the screen to return to the Main Menu. 5) E XPORT / I MPORT S ETTINGS Brings up the Export / Import Settings screen which is used to import or export manager and manufacturer configurable settings.
