7 1.2 S ETUP Read the entire Operation Manual before setting up the Life Fitness stairclimber . W HERE TO P LACE THE L IFE F ITNESS ® S T AIRCLIMBER Following all safety instructions in Section 1.1, move the unit to the location in which it will be used.
H OW TO C HARGE THE B A TTER Y The Life Fitness stairclimber is powered by a rechargeable 6V battery . Check the battery by pressing the ST ART key or by stepping on the pedals. If the battery is charged, the console lights up, making it possible to program a workout.
9 Consult the chart below for international electrical requirements. * *If the console display does not light up after the proper charging procedure is followed, call Customer Support Services.
2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE O VER VIEW The computerized display console allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console, the user can track fitness improvement from one workout to the next.
11 2.2 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE D ESCRIPTIONS This section lists and describes the functions for the keys and display windows on the Life Fitness stairclimber console. See Section 4, titled The Workout s , for detailed information on using the console to set up workouts.
K ZONE TRAINING+: Press this key to select one of the Zone Training+ TM workout s, which target specific ranges, or zones, for maint aining a heart rate to achieve maximum exercise results.
13 O WORKOUT PROFILE WINDOW: This window displays shapes, made of columns of light s, that represent the levels of intensity in a workout-in-progress. The height of the column is proportional to the level of the intensity .
2.3 T HE A CCESSOR Y T RA Y The accessory tray (A), which is mounted to the base of the console, provides dual storage trays with space for items such as water bottles, personal stereos, and cell phones. Additionally , an integrated reading rack (B) for supporting a book or magazine is located at the base of the uppper panel of the console.
15 3 H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results.
16 3.2 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE L IFEPULSE TM D IGIT AL H EART R AT E M ONITORING S YSTEM The patented Lifepulse system sensors are the built-in heart rate monitoring system on the Life Fitness stairclimber . Grasp the stainless steel sensors (A) that are set into the “bull horn” handle- bars.
17 T HE P OLAR ® T ELEMETR Y H EART R AT E M ONITORING C HEST S TRAP The Life Fitness stairclimber is equipped with Polar telemetry , a heart rate monitoring system in which electrodes, pressed against the skin, transfer heart rate signals to the console.
4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS This section lists the Life Fitness st airclimber pre-programmed workouts. For more detailed infor- mation, see Section 4.2, titled Using the Workouts . QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the step s involved in selecting a specific workout.
19 INTERV AL is a Hill workout in which intensity levels rise and fall. The higher levels gradually incline toward a peak and then gradually decline. CASCADES is a two-peak workout in which intensity levels gradually incline and decline.
20 S ELECTING A W ORKOUT For MANUAL , F A T BURN , CARDIO , and RANDOM : When prompted to select a workout, press the key labeled with the name of the desired workout. For HEART RA TE HILL , HEART RA TE INTERV AL , and EXTREME HEART RA TE : When prompt- ed by the MESSAGE CENTER to select a workout, press the ZONE TRAINING+ key .
21 S ELECTING AND A DJUSTING THE I NTENSITY L EVEL When prompted by the MESSAGE CENTER, use the ARROW keys to increase or decrease the displayed intensity level or target heart rate* to the desired value, or key in the desired value with the NUMERIC KEYP AD, and press ENTER.
22 The Dist ance Goal feature is designed to build endurance. The user sets a dist ance goal during the workout setup. Once the goal is met, the workout automatically goes into a cool-down phase and ends afterward. T o use this feature: 1. Press the PERSONAL TRAINER key when prompted to select a workout.
23 E NDING W ORKOUTS E ARL Y T o end a workout before the pre-set duration expires, press CLEAR once. The MESSAGE CENTER then displays a workout summary , which includes the number or floors climbed, the total calories burned, and other statistics.
4.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS Q UICK S T ART QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the step s of selecting a specific workout. The intensity level for the workout is set automatically and remains the same unless manual- ly changed.
25 2 Plateau increases the intensity slightly , and keeps it steady , to bring the heart rate to the low end of the target zone. Check the heart rate at the end of this phase. 3 Interval T raining is a series of increasingly steeper hills, alternating with valleys, or stints of recovery .
H EART R AT E H ILL TM This program combines the standard HILL workout profile with the concept of Heart Rate Zone T raining. The default target heart rate* is calculated as 80 percent of the theoretical maximum † (HRmax), but the user can adjust the target rate during the workout setup.

28 E XTREME H EART R AT E TM This intense, varied workout is designed to help more experienced users to break through fitness improvement plateaus. The workout alternates between two t arget heart rates* as quickly as possi- ble. The ef fect is similar to that of running sprints.
29 W A TTS ( IF ENABLED ) This workout target s a rate of effort equal to a certain number of W atts. A W att is a unit of power that measures the amount of mechanical work required to operate a device, such as a Life Fitness stairclimber . It is roughly equal to 0.
30 4.4 P ERSONAL T RAINER W ORKOUTS Custom interval heart rate and hill workouts may be created by fitness club managers or other authorized personnel. • Interval heart rate: The trainer can design a workout that sets a different t arget heart rate for each interval and adjusts the step speed to the user's heart rate.
31 4.5 U SING THE L IFE F ITNESS S T AIRCLIMBER S T AIRCLIMBER M OTION The Life Fitness stairclimber permit s a maximum stepping height of 13.5 inches, or 34.3 centimeters. The unit features independent stepping action, which means that the pedals move independently of each other .
32 5 O PTIONAL S ETTINGS 5.1 E NTERING AND U SING THE O PTIONAL S ETTINGS F EA TURE Fitness club managers and other authorized personnel can use the Optional Settings feature to change default settings, or to enable or disable certain programs or displays on the console.
