2 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch Important Things to Kno w 1. All customer remov able scre ws are brass colored. Do not remove screws unless they are brass colored, or you will v oid y our warranty . 2. A magnetized “L”-shaped Phillips screwdriver is included with the replacement part.
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 3 Opening the Computer Note: These instructions cover the iMac G5 (20-inc h) models. The models may look slightly diff erent from one sho wn in the illustration; ho wever , the f ollo wing procedure applies to both models. 1.
4 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 4. Locate the three silv er case screws circled belo w . Y ou ma y ha v e to lift the stand to locate the middle case screw . Note: These screws are captiv e; they are part of the displa y/bezel assemb ly and cannot be remo ved.
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 5 Removing the In verter 1. T o access the inv er ter other ser vice modules ha v e to be remov ed. This procedure will show y ou how to remo v e and replace each module. As you remov e each module , set it aside, along with the scre ws f or that module .
6 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 3. Locate the memor y module(s) in the bottom right cor ner . Y ou must remo v e the memor y to gain access to the inv er ter . 4. Rotate the computer to the left so the memor y is in the position shown belo w . 5. T o release the memor y from its slot, push down on the two side latches (circled below).
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 7 6. Locate the gra y plastic module on the r ight side of the computer . This is the inv er ter . 7. Remov e the three in v er ter screws (circled belo w).
8 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 8. Slide the inv erter out at an angle. Locate the colored cables connected on the right side of the inv erter . Important: Carefully slide out the inv erter so that it doesn't make contact with the DIMM connector latches .
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 9 10. Lift the inv erter out of the computer . Gently pull the blac k cable (circled) that is connected under (see ne xt photo) the gra y fan duct. 11. This picture shows a close up of the connector from step 10. The black cab le (from the pre vious step) connects to the pins shown belo w .
10 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 12. Locate the small, gra y inverter cable cov er in the top right corner . 13. Pull the gra y cover in the direction of the arro w .
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 11 14. Disconnect the two white connectors underneath the cov er . Pull on the connectors, not on the cables . F ree the cab les from the clips inside the cov er . Set the inv er ter and cov er aside . 15. T ur n ov er the in v er ter as shown.

iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 13 Installing the Replacement In verter 1. Remov e the replacement in v er ter from its packaging. Attach the black in v er ter cable that you remo v ed in the pre vious step . 2. Locate the gra y plastic cover that came with the in v er ter .
14 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 3. Install the plastic cov er on the replacement in v er ter board. Gently squeeze the board near each tab (circled) until all six tabs snap onto the board. 4. T ur n ov er the in v er ter . Pull the in v er ter cables up into the slot on the in v er ter cov er as shown.
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 15 5. Slide the inv erter par tially into place. Note: The excess b lack cab le tuc ks under the memor y slots. Important: Be careful of the DIMM latches when you install the inv erter board, they are very delicate. Push the DIMM latches into the closed position bef ore installing the inv er ter board.
16 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 7. Connect the inv erter cables, connecting the small connector first. Note: The connectors are ke y ed, and plug in only one wa y .
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 17 9. Locate the gra y inverter cable cov er . Connect the inv er ter cables as sho wn, making sure the connectors lie flat inside the cable co v er . 10. Low er the cable co v er , pressing down steadily until the tabs on the cov er loc k the cov er into the midplane .
18 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 11. T uck the in v er ter cables along the edge of the hard driv e and ne xt to the memor y tabs. 12. Replace the memor y module(s) by lining up the notch on the module with the notch on the slot. Press fir mly on the memor y module until it clicks into place .
iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch - 19 Closing the Computer 1. Replace the cov er so that the slots on the top edge of the co v er mate with the tabs on the displa y housing.
20 - iMac G5 Inverter, 20-inch 3. Tighten the case screws b y turning them to the r ight. 4. Reconnect the power cord while the computer is f ace down.
