5 Setting Up the LaserWriter 12/640 PS U np a ck i n g t he p r i n te r IMPORTANT Th e pri nter wei ghs appro x imatel y 30 pounds (appr o ximate l y 1 4 kilo grams) . 1 Remove the Styrofoam packing material located on either side of the printer. ` 2 Lift the printer out of the box and remove the printer from the plastic bag.
4 You also need to obtain whatever cables your networks require. 5 Pull the packing tape from the printer’s top cover. 6 Pull open the printer’s top cover.
7 Setting Up the LaserWriter 12/640 PS 7 Remove the plastic foam block from inside the printer. S a v e all the pac king materi al s . T h e y pro v ide the best pr otect i on f or the pri nter if y ou ev er need to m o ve it. Remove the packing material.
8 Chapter 1 I ns ta l l i ng t he fi rs t t o ner ca r t ri dg e Th e toner c ar trid g e contains the dry pl ast ic po wder t hat the printer use s instead of in k. The first time y ou i nstall a toner c ar trid ge , f oll o w the steps gi v en here .
3 Distribute the toner powder by gently rocking the cartridge back and forth. 4 Firmly pull the tab directly away from the cartridge to remove the sealing tape. WARNING Pull the tab strai ght out o f the c ar trid ge . Don ’ t pull t oo quic kl y or at an a ng le—eit her might dama g e the seals on t he c ar trid g e .
5 Align the arrow on the left side of the toner cartridge with the arrow on the left side of the printer, then slide the cartridge downward into the printer. Make sure the toner cartridge is inserted all the way and properly seated inside the printer.

2 Prepare a stack of paper. Y ou c an load up t o 25 0 sheets of 20-pound phot o cop ier paper . Mak e sure t h e ed g e s are e v en on all s ide s b ef ore i nser ting t he stack o f pap er . 3 Set the length guide to match your paper’s length. Move the width guide by pinching and sliding it into place.
Load t hree-ho le punched paper f ace do w n, with t he hole s t ow ard the lef t si de o f the c a s sette . Load letterhead pap er f ace dow n, with t he tops o f the pa ge s at the front o f the ca ssette (t he ha ndle end) . 7 Adjust the length and width guides so that they fit snugly against the paper.

3 Press the “|” on the power switch to turn the printer on. 4 Save the startup page. It contains information you may need to complete your network setup. Th e pri nter take s a minute or tw o to w ar m up , and then it automat ic all y pri nts a star tup pag e .
5 Check the status lights. After t he star tup pa g e is printed, the R eady/In U se light g lo w s steadil y . A ll other li ghts shou ld be of f . If any ot her li ghts are on, see Chapter 1 2 . 4 Copy the DISKS folder to your hard disk. 5 Double-click the DISKS folder. 6 Double-click the Floppy Disk Maker application. 7 Click Full. A di alo g bo x appears that gi v e s y ou some inf ormati on, s uc h a s the appro x imate tim e it will tak e t o c op y the ima ge s t o flopp y di s ks .

3 Choose a default paper size for the multipurpose tray from the pop-up menu. Th e Pri nt dial o g bo x pro v ide s the A ut o S elec t opti on, whic h allo ws t he pri nter t o dra w paper from any paper source t hat ho lds t he cor rect s ize pap er .
6 Choose the output tray from the pop-up menu. F ace Do wn output tra y is t he def ault. This tra y is l o c ated on the t op o f the printer a nd stac ks t he output media f ace do wn. Th e F ace Up output reduces the cur l o f y our pap er b y us i ng a “ strai ght- thr ou gh ” pap er path throu gh the printer .
Y ou c an als o c hang e the w a y ima g e s print by increas i ng or decrea sing t he number of gra y le v el s used t o reproduce them. More le v els o f gra y produce a more natural-l ooking phot ographic qu ality . How e v er , i ncreas ing t he numb er o f gra y s al so decrea ses t he res o luti on of the ima ge .

3 Click the checkboxes next to the network types to specify when the connection with the computer should be broken. 4 Click Send to send the job-handling configuration settings to the printer. 3 Open the Printer’s Zone category. A list o f the E therT al k zones appears . 4 Select the zone you want the printer to appear in. 5 Click Send to send the zone setting to the printer. Ch a ng i ng T CP/I P co n fi g u rat i o ns Y ou c an sp ecify t he I P addres s of t he pri nter .
2 Open the TCP/IP Configuration category. A pan el app ears i n whi c h y ou can enter the IP addres s . 3 Enter the IP address. 4 Drag the slider to set the printer’s subnet mask. 5 Enter the default Gateway Address. 6 Click Send to send the TCP/IP configuration to the printer.

2 Turn the printer off and back on again. 3 Set the communication switch on the printer to the Normal (in) position. Sen d i ng P o stSc ri p t fi les t o t he p r i n te r Y ou c an dow nl oad P ostScript f iles t o the pri nter to print a P ostScript pr ogram or t o run a PostS cript pro gram to c ha ng e the i nter nal setting s of the printer .
IMPORTANT If the L aserW riter 1 2/6 40 PS i s on a n etw ork shared b y other users , mak e s ure t hat no one is attemptin g t o u se the printer when y ou re star t it.
F or specif ic steps on ho w a user c a n i nstall the pri nter so f tw are on a Mac O S computer and set up the printer from the Chooser , ref er t o “Installi ng t he Printer Sof tw are ” and “ Se lecting and Sett i ng Up t he Pri nter” i n Chapter 6 .
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each printer disk. 5 Open the folder you created in step 1. Th e contents o f each di s k are contain ed i n a f o lder nam ed f or that dis k . 6 Open the LaserWriter Disk 1 folder. 7 Select the Installer and Installer Script icons and drag the icons from the LaserWriter Disk 1 folder to the folder you created in step 1.
6 Click the Install button. Th e I nstaller take s a f e w moments t o cal cul ate what needs to be done a nd then begins to c opy f iles . 7 Follow the instructions on the screen until the installation is complete. After t he i nstallat ion, t h e I nstaller tells y ou t o re star t your c omputer .

6 Click Next if you have no other open applications. If y ou ha v e open applic ati ons , c li c k Cancel t o stop t hi s installati on. Cl ose all other appli c ati ons and star t the i nstallat i on proce s s a g ain. A me ss a g e appears that lets y ou v ie w the READ M E .
12 Enter a new directory for the setup program or use the default directory and click Next. A me ss a g e appears that lets y ou sp ecify ho w y our printer is connected (l o c al or netw ork) . 13 Select how your printer is connected (local or network) and click Next.

7 When you have finished reading the README.WRI file, choose Exit from the File menu in the Notepad application. A W el com e di alo g bo x i s disp la yed t hat allo w s you t o select Ex pres s Installat ion, Cu stom Installat ion, Print Dri v er Onl y , or De-Install.

3 Slide the yellow plastic square back and forth to remove any toner residue. 4 Take the new cartridge out of its packaging. 5 Distribute the toner powder by gently rocking the cartridge back and forth.

4 Check the multipurpose tray (if you are using it) to see whether paper has jammed there. If so, gently pull the paper out. 5 Once you have removed the jammed paper, reinsert the toner cartridge, close the top cover, and slide the paper cassette back into the printer.
