Installing ink cartridges 1 Remove the ink cartridge from the pack, and then remove the pr otective cap from the ink cartridge. No Security It is not re c omme nded t o use no s ecurity at all on a home wir eless network. U sing no se curi t y means t hat anyone within ra ng e of yo ur wireless network can us e yo ur network reso ur ces—inc luding Internet access — i f your wireles s network is connected t o t he Inter net.

Instal ling the prin ter on other com puters Once t he print er is set up o n the wirel ess networ k, it can be acc essed wirele ssly by any other c omputer on the networ k. However, you w ill need to install the prin t er driver on every compu ter that w ill access it.

Advan ced wire less setu p Creating a n ad hoc wire less network You ca n set up an ad ho c network if you: • Do not have an acc ess point or wirele ss router . • Do not have a wirele ss netw ork (but do h ave a wi reless ne t wor k adapter for your comput er).
Window s Vista w ill enable the ad hoc network fo r you. It w ill appe ar in the “Conne ct to a net work” dia log under “Avail able netw orks,” indi c a t i ng that th e com puter is c onfigur ed for t he ad hoc networ k. 4 Close t he Window s Contro l Panel an d any remainin g windo ws.

Switching between USB , Ethernet , and wireless c onnecti ons (Windows o nly) You ca n c hange the w ay you access your pr inter, depe nding on your needs. The following p rocedur e s assume that y o u have config ured your printe r for one type of connec tion and that the printe r drivers are inst alled on the comput er.
If th e prin ter is currentl y set u p for w irel ess 1 Attach a USB cable to t he comput er and to the print er. 2 Wait a moment for Windows to locate the driver and finish setting up the print er. 3 Select the USB printer. See “Select i ng the pr inter” on page 72.

Conf iguring 80 2.1X Aut hentic ation The info rmatio n you must c omplete i s dependent on the 80 2.1X se curity mec hanism you select. Some require user name s, passwords, and/or cert ificates.
Where do I find my WEP k ey or WPA/WPA2 passphras e? • Cont act your system su pport p erson. – The per son who s et up your ne twork usually ke eps the WE P key or WPA /WPA2 passp hrase.
What is a n etwork? A networ k is a coll ection of d ev i c es such as com puters, printe rs, Ether net hubs, ac cess points, and routers conn ected toget her for com munication throug h cabl es or throug h a wire less conn ection. A n etwork ca n be wired, w ireles s, or desi gned to have both wir ed and wirel ess devic es.
There ar e many differ ent ways a ne twork can be s et up. Fou r common e xamples ap pear be low . Note: The pr inters in the fo llowing diagra ms represent p rinters with interna l print se rvers built into them so that they can co mmunicat e over a n et work.
Scenario 3 : Wireles s n et work with no In ternet acces s • Compu ters and printers c onnect to t he network us ing a wirele ss access point. • The ne twork ha s no connection to the Internet.
The USB port on the computer and on the printer are each marked with . Note: D o not connect the USB cab le until pr ompted to do. 1 If the USB port at the ba ck of the pr i nt er is cove red by a sticker, then make s ure to remove it. 2 Firmly p lug t he square end o f the USB cab le into the bac k of the pri nter.
3 Firmly plug the rect angular end of the USB cable into the U SB port of the compu ter. 4 Follow the instructions o n t h e computer screen. How are inf rastructure a nd ad hoc net works differen t? Wi reless ne tworks c an operat e in one of two mod es: inf rastru c tur e or ad hoc .
Finding the sig nal strength The sig nal streng t h tells you how strongly the comput er or pri nt er is recei v i ng the wireless s ignal from the w irel e s s network.
R EMOVE OBSTACLE S BETWEEN TH E ACCESS POINT AN D TH E PRINTER The wirel ess signa l from you r access poi nt will pass through m ost obje cts. Most w alls, floo rs, furnitur e, and other objects w ill not block t he wireless signal.

Clea ning the printhea d nozzles If you have not been using t h e pr inter fo r a long period, then you may need t o clean the printhead noz zles to improv e the qual ity of you r prints. Keep yo ur printe r plugged to a properly gr ounded, wo rking elect rical outlet to a llow it to perfo rm automatic m ai ntenan c e cycles .
Cleaning the scanner glass Clea n the scanner glass a nd other related pa rts w hen vertic al streaks app ear o n your printe d page s or when y ou se e mark s or smu dges on s uch parts. 1 Dampen a clean, lint ‑ free cloth with wa ter. 2 Gently w ipe clean t he backing m aterial ( 1) and the sc anner g lass (2) .
