Installing another language control panel These instruction s apply only if you received on e or mo re additional language control panels with the printer. 1 Lift and remove the control panel (if one is install ed). 2 Choose the correct control panel for your lan guage.
Networking the printer For complete networki ng information, please refer to the Getting Started booklet that came with th e product. Installing the printer on a network Follow the instructio ns for the networking me thod you want to use. Make sure th e selected networ k is set up and working properly, and that all relevant device s are turned on .
4 Align the edges of the in ternal wireless print server with th e guides on the l eft and right, an d then slide the wireless print serve r into th e printer until it snaps into place. 5 Make sure the antenna points up. 6 Attach the adhesive label with the MAC address to the back of the printer.
Learning about the printer Understanding the parts of the printer Use the To 1 Paper support Load paper. 2 Wi-Fi indicator Check wireless status: • Off indicates that the pr inter is not turned on or that no wirele ss option is installed. • Orange indicates th at the printer is ready for wireless conn ection, but not connected.
Use the To 1 Scanner unit Access the print cartridges. 2 Print cartridge carrier Install, replace, or remove a prin t cartridge. 3 Lexmark N2050 (internal wireless p rint server) Connect the printer to a wireless network. Learning about the software This chapter tells how to use the printer with Windows ope rating systems. If you are using a Macintosh operating system, see the Mac H elp: 1 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexmark 3500 -4500 Series folder. 2 Double-click the printe r Help icon.
Click To Details View/Print Photo Library Browse, print, or sh are you r photos. Transfer Photos Download phot os from a memory card, fl ash drive, CD, or PictBridge-enable d digital camera to the Photo Library. Photo Greeting Card s Make quality greeting cards from your photos.
To open the Solution Center, use one of th ese methods: Method 1 Method 2 1 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon. 2 Click Setup and diagnose printer. Tab Choices Paper Setup • Select a Paper Size for Pa per, Env elope, Banner, or Borderless. • Select an Orientation of Portrait or Landscape. Print Layout • Select a Layout of Normal, Ba nner, Mirror, N-up, Poster, Booklet, or Borderless. • Select a duplexing pr eferen ce on how the shee ts are flipped.
Click To Quick Print an en tire Web page in dra ft quality. Black and White Print an entire Web page in bl ack and white. Text Only A Print only th e text of a Web page . Photos Print only the photos or imag es on a Web page. Note: The nu mber of photos or imag es valid for printing appears next to Photos .
4 Click the Save Settings menu . 5 From the Restore section, select Factory Settings (Defaults ) . Note: Factory default settings can not be deleted. 33.
Loading paper and original documents Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable side, see the instructions th at came wi th the paper.
Load up to Make sure 10 envelopes • The print side of the envelopes faces you. • The stamp location is in th e upper left corner. • The envelopes are designed for use with inkjet printers. • The envelopes are loaded in th e center of the paper supp ort.
Load up to Make sure 10 iron-on tr ansfers • You follow the loadi ng instructions th at came with the iron -on transfers. • The print side of the transfers faces you. • The transfers are lo aded in the cent er of the paper support. • The paper gui des rest against the edges of the transfers.
Load up to Make sure 20 sheets of bann er paper • You remove all the pap er from the paper support before loading the banner paper. • You tear off only the number of p ages needed to print the banner. • You place the required stack of banner paper on th e top cover.
3 Place the original document or item fa cedown on the sca nner glass in the uppe r left corner. 4 Close the top cover to avoid dark edges on the scanned image.
Printing Printing a document 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 4 Adjust the settings. 5 Click OK . 6 Click OK or Print . Printing high-quality graphics 1 Load paper. 2 With your image open, click File Print .
4 If you want to view the Web page before printing: a Click Preview . b Use the toolb ar options to scroll b etween pages, zoom in or out, or select wh ether to print text and images or text only. c Click: • Print or • Close , and continue to step 5.
Printing collated copies If you print multiple cop ies of a document, you ca n choose to print each copy as a set (co lla ted) or to print the copies as groups of pages (not collated). Collated Not collated 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print .
4 From the “I Want To” menu , select Print on an envelope . 5 From the Envelope Size l ist, select the envelope size loaded. 6 Select Portrait or Landscape orientation. Notes: • Most envelopes use landsca pe orientation. • Make sure the same o rientation is also selected in the software application.
4 From the Print Layo ut tab, select N-up . 5 Select the numbe r of pages to print o n each page. 6 If you want each pa ge image to be surrounde d by a border, select Print Page Borders .
Working with photos • Make sure that the printe r settings are set correctly for the ph otos you wish to print. For information on how to set photo print settings, see “Using the Photo Card menu” on page 21.
Warning: Do not touch cables, any network adapter, the me mory card, or the printer in th e area shown whi le actively printing, reading, or wri ting from a memory card . A loss of data can occur. Also, do not remove a memory card while actively prin ting, reading, or writing from a me mory card.
Note: The printer recognizes one a ctive media device at a time . If you insert a memory ca rd and a flash drive, a message appears o n the display promp ting you to desi gna te the device you want the printer to recognize.
Transferring selected photos from a memory card using the computer 1 Insert a memory card into the printer with the label facing the printer control panel.
Transferring selected photos from a CD or flash drive using the computer 1 Insert a CD into the computer or a fl ash drive into the printer. For mo re in formation, see “Inser ting a flash drive” on page 45. The Lexmark Imaging Stu dio software laun ches automatically on your compu ter.
Notes: • If photos on the memory card were taken on more than one date, selection s will include Last Date and Date Range . • To choose a date range, press and then press or re peatedly until the desired date is displayed . Date ranges are displaye d by month and year starting with the most recent month.

10 Press Start Color or Start Black . The print settings us ed on the prin t job are displaye d one at a time on the second line of the display. 11 Press Start Color or Start Black again . Printing photos by date range 1 Load photo paper wi th the glossy or printa ble side facing you.
Printing photos from a digital camera using DPOF Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) is a feature available on some d igital came r as. If you r camera su pports DPOF , you can specify which photos to print, how many of each , and print settings while the memory card is still in the camera.
Notes: • Make sure the PictBridge-enab led digital camera is se t to the correct USB mode. For more information, see the camera documentation. • The printer recognizes on e active media device at a time.

3 From the Style tab, click to select a style for your greeting card. 4 From the Photo ta b, select and drag a ph oto into the pre view pane on the right side of the screen . 5 Click the text area to be able to add text to your photo greeting ca rd. 6 When you have finish ed editing your text, click OK .

Copying a photo using the computer 1 Place the photo facedown on the scanner glass. 2 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon. 3 From the left pane of the Welcome screen, click Copy . 4 Select Photo . 5 Click Start . The photo appea rs in the right pane .

Scanning images for editing 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a computer, and both the printer and the computer are on. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon.
4 Select the Several Photos optio n. 5 Click Start . Scanning documents or images for e-mailing You can e-mail attached imag es usin g your default e-mail appl ication. 1 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 2 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon.
10 From the drop-down list, sele ct the patterns to b e removed. 11 To reduce stray marks on color phot os, click the check box, and then move the slider to the desired value. 12 Click OK . Th e thumbnail is updated. Customizing scan settings using the computer 1 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon.
Faxing Make sure: • The printer is connected to a computer that is equipp ed with a fa x modem. • The computer is con nected to a working phone line. • Both the printer and the computer are turned on. Sending a fax using the software You can scan a document to the compu ter and then fax it to someone using the software.
Receiving a fax automatically 1 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon. 2 From the Settings area in the left pane of the Welcome screen, click Setup and ma nage faxes . 3 From the “I Want To” menu , click Adjust speed dial list and other fa x settings .
Maintaining the printer Changing print cartridges Removing a used print cartridge 1 Make sure the printer is on. 2 Lift the scanner uni t. The print cartridge carrier mo ves and stops at the loading po sition, unless the printer is busy. 3 Press down on the cartridge carrier le ver to raise the cartridge carrier lid.
2 Press down on the cartridge carrier leve rs to raise the cartri dge carrier lids. 3 Insert the black cartridge or the photo cartridg e in the left carrier. Insert th e color cartridge in the right carrier. 4 Close the lids. 5 Close the scanne r unit, making su re to keep your han ds out from undernea th the scanner unit.
Achieving better print quality Improving print quality If you are not sa tisfied with the print quality of a document, m ake sure you: • Use the appropriate paper for the document. If yo u are pr i nting photos or other high quality images, fo r best results use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper or Lexmark Photo Pap er.
5 Press or repeatedly un til Clean Cartridges appears. 6 Press . A page prints, forcing ink through the prin t cartridge nozzles to clean the m. 7 Print the document again to verify that the print quality has improv ed. 8 If print quality has not imp roved, try cleaning the nozzles up to two more times.
10 Repeat step 9 up to two more times. 11 If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the p rint cartridges. Preserving the print cartridges • Keep a new cartridg e in its packaging until you are ready to install it. • Do not remove a cartrid ge from the pr inter except to re place , clean, or store it in an a irtight container.

If you receive an Out of Original Lexmark Ink message, the original Le xmark ink in the indicated cartridg e (s) has been depleted. If you believe yo u purchased a new, gen uine Lexmark print cartridge, b ut the Out of Original Lexmark Ink message appears: 1 Click Learn Mor e on the message.

Power button is not lit These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Press power button Make sure the prin ter is on by pressing . Disconnect and reconnect the power cord 1 Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and the n from the printer.
Reinstall the software 1 Turn off and then r estart your comp uter. 2 Click Cance l on all New Hardwa re Found screens. 3 Insert the CD, and then fol low the instru ctions on the computer screen to reinstall th e software. Reconnect power supply 1 Press to turn t he printe r off.
Check cartridges 1 Remove the print cartridges. 2 Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 1 2 3 Reinsert the cartridges. Check printer default and pause settings 1 Click: • In Windows XP (defau lt Start menu): Start Printers and Faxes .
Make sure the camera is a Pict Bridge-enabled dig ital camera 1 Disconnect the came ra. 2 Connect a PictBridg e-enabled digital ca mera to the Pi ctBridge port. See th e digital camera documen tation to determine whethe r it is PictBridge-enabled. Check USB cable Use only the USB cable that came with the camera.
5 Press or repeatedly un til Photo Size appears. 6 Press . 7 Press or repeatedly un til 4 x 6 in. or 10 x 15 cm appears. 8 Press . 9 Press or repeatedly un til Paper Setup appears. 10 Press . 11 Press or repeatedly un til Paper Size appears. 12 Press .

Make sure the paper size matches the printer setting 1 From the software application, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 3 Click Paper Setup . 4 Check the paper size. Print speed is slow These are possible so lutions.
Are you printing a large file? The ink levels displa yed in the printer software are not upd a ted during a print job; they r epresent the ink level at the beginning of a p rint job. The ink levels may se em inconsistent in th e Printing Status wi ndow when you are printing a large file.
Poor copy quality • Blank pages • Checkerboard pattern • Distorted graphics or pictures • Missing characters • Faded print • Dark pri nt • Skewed lines • Smudges • Streaks • Unexpected characters • White lines in print These are possible so lutions.
Partial document or photo copies These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check document placement Make sure the docume nt or photo is load ed facedown on the scanner glass in the upper left co rner. Check paper size Make sure the paper size b eing used matches th e size you selected.
Scan was not successful These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check USB cable connection 1 Check the USB cable for any ob vious damage. 2 Firmly plug the square end o f the USB cable into the ba ck of the printer. 3 Firmly plug the rectan gular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the compu ter.
4 Click Custom Settings . 5 Select a higher scan resolution. 6 Click Start . Review steps to improve print quality See “Improving print quality” on page 72.

Check media loading • Verify that the specialty media is loade d correctly. Fo r more information, see “Loading va rious paper types” on page 34. • Try loading one page , envelope, or sheet o f specialty media at a time. Check printer default and pause settings 1 Click: • In Windows XP (defau lt Start menu): Start Printers and Faxes .
Memory card cannot be inserted There are possible sol utions. Try one or more of the followin g: Check memory card type Make sure that the typ e of memory card you ar e using can be used in the printer. For more info rmation, see “Inserting a memory card” on page 44.
Error messages Alignment Error These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Remove tape from print cartridge 1 Remove the print cartridge. 2 Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 1 2 3 Reinsert the cartridge. 4 Press to align the cartridge.
5 Reinsert the black (or photo) prin t cartridge. 6 If the error: • Reappears, replace the blac k (or pho to) print cartridge with a new one. • Does not reappear, reinsert the color print cartridge. 7 If the error re appears, replace th e color print cartridge with a ne w one.
10 Reinstall the print cartri dges. For more information, see “Ins talling print cartridges” on page 70 11 Close the scanne r unit. 12 Plug the power cord int o the wall outlet. 13 Press to turn t he printer on. 14 Reinstall the print cartri dges.
Left Cartridge Error / Right Cartridge Error This message may also app ear as Error 1205 (L eft Cartridge) o r Error 1206 (Rig ht Cartridge) . 1 Remove the indicated print cartridge. 2 Disconnect t he power cord from the electrica l outlet. 3 Reconnect the powe r cord to the electrical outlet.
Select the After Dial setting 1 From the desktop, double-click the Lexmark Imaging Studio icon. 2 From the left pane of the Welcome screen, click Setup and manage faxes. 3 Click Adjust speed dial list and othe r fax settings . 4 Click the Dialing and Sending tab.
Photo size error. Phot o must fit on page. There are one or mo re photos la rger than the paper size you sel ected on the pri nter menu. 1 Press to clear the error message. 2 Press or repeatedly un til Paper Size appears on th e display. 3 Press . 4 Press or repeatedly to select th e paper size optio n that will fit yo ur largest photo size.
Note: Resetting to factory default settings will delete all printer setti ngs you selected. 1 Press to turn off the printer. 2 Press and hold the Settings and Start Color buttons at the same time, then press again to turn the printer back on. Language appears on th e display, indicating that the printer ha s been reset.
