Use the To 7 Wi-Fi indicator Check wireless status : • Off indicates that the pr inter is not turned on or that no wirele ss option is installed. • Orange – indicates that th e printer is ready .

Networking General networking Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computers, printers, Ethernet hubs, wireless access po ints, and rou ters connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection.
Scenario 1: Laptop and printer connected wirelessly with Internet • A computer is conn ected to a wire less router by an Ethernet cable. • A laptop and a prin ter are conne cted wirelessly to the router. • The network is conn ected to the Inte rnet th rough a DSL or a cable modem.
Scenario 3: Computer, laptop, and printer connected wirelessly without Internet • A computer, a laptop, and a printer are connected wirel essly to a wireless access point.
If you purchased the internal wire less print server sepa rately, the MAC address app ears on an adhesive labe l that came with the wireless print server. Attach the adhesi ve label to your printer so you will be able to find the MAC address when you need it.
How to locate a computer IP address 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click All Programs Access ories Command Prompt . • In Windows XP, click Start Programs or All Programs Accessories Command Prom pt . 2 Type ipconfig .
A wireless network whe re each device communicates with others through a wireless access point (wireless router) is set up in infrastructure mode. A ll devices must have valid IP addresse s and shar e the same SSID an d channel. In addition, they mu st share the same SSID an d channel as the wirele ss access point (wireless router).
3 In the Connect to a Ne twork dialog, click Set up a wireless ad-hoc (c omputer-to-computer) network , and then click Next . 4 Follow the instructions in the “Set up a wireless ad ho c network” wizard . As part of the setup : a Create a network name or SSID for the networ k between the computer and your printer.
14 If necessary, deselect the The key is prov ided for me auto matically check box. 15 In the Network Ke y box, type in a security code. 16 Write down the security code you chos e so you can re fer to it when runn in g the wireless setup. Make sure you copy it down exactly, in cluding any capital letters.
Loading paper and original documents Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable side, see the instructions th at came with the paper.
• The paper guides rest against the edge s of the envelop es. 1 2 Notes: • Do not load envel opes with holes, pe rforations, cutouts, or de ep embossing. • Do not use env elopes that have e xposed flap a dhesive. • Envelopes require more drying time.
Note: Photo cards require more drying time. Remove each photo card as it exits, and allow it to dry to avoid ink smudging. Loading transparencies You can load up to 50 transparencies at a time .
Loading banner paper You can load up to 20 shee ts of banner pa per at a time. 1 Remove all paper from the paper supp ort before loading the banner paper. 2 Tear off only the number of page s needed to print the ban ner. 3 Place the required stack of banner paper on a flat surface behind the prin ter.
Printing Printing basic documents Printing a document 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 4 Adjust the settings. 5 Click OK . 6 Click OK or Print . Printing a Web page You can use the T oolbar to create a printer-friendly versio n of any Web page.
Printing photos or images from a Web page 1 Load paper. For best results, use ph oto or heavyweight matte paper, with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable sid e, see the instructions that came wi th the paper.
Collating copies If you print multiple cop ies of a document, you ca n choose to print each copy as a set (co llated) or to print the cop ies as groups of pages (not collated). Collated Not collated 1 With a documen t open, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup .
Printing documents or photos from a removable storage device 1 Insert a memory card int o a card slot, or insert a flash drive int o the PictBridge port on the front of the pr inter.
Printing envelopes 1 Load envelopes. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 4 From the “I Want To” menu , select Print on an envelope . 5 From the Envelope Size l ist, select the envelope size loaded.
6 Select Print Crop Marks if you want each page of the poster to show crop marks. 7 Click Select Pages To Print to reprint any damaged poster pa ges without ha ving to print all of the poster pages. Click pages to sele ct or cancel them. 8 Click OK to close any printer software d ialogs that are open.
Assembling a booklet 1 Flip the printed stack of papers over in the pape r exit tray. 2 Take the first bundle from the stack, fold it in ha lf, and then set it aside with the fron t page down. 3 Take the next bund le from the stack, fold it in half, and then stack it with the front page down on top of the first bundle.
Printing transparencies 1 Load up to 50 transparenc ies. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click OK or Print . Note: To prevent smudging, remove each tran sparency as it exits, and let it dry be fo re stacking. Transparencie s may require up to 15 minute s to dry.
Resetting the printer to factory default settings 1 Make sure the prin ter is turned off. 2 Open the access cover and leave it open. 3 Press and hold . 4 While holding , press . 5 When the light blinks, release . 6 Close the access cover. 7 Wait for the light to stop blinking.
Select To Manual Duplex a print job manua lly. You must select this op tion when printing two -sided jobs that will be printed on a size or type of paper other than letter- or A4-size plain paper (su ch as greeting cards).
7 Following the instructio n sheet, flip an d reload the paper pr int side down. 8 The printer will then print the even-numbered pages on the reverse sides of the o dd-numbered pages, completing the two-sided copies.
Working with photos Retrieving and managing photos Inserting a memory card 1 Insert a memory card. • Insert the card with the brand name label facing to the left.
3 When the computer recognizes th at a me mory card is i nst alled, the message New photos have been found. What do you want to do? appears. If the printer does not read the memory card, re move and reinsert it. For more informat ion, see “Memory card troubleshooting” on page 102.
Note: The computer recognizes one active media device at a time from your printer. If you insert a memory card and a flash drive, a message appears on the display prompting you to desi gnate the device you wan t the printer to recognize.
Transferring selected photos from a memory card using the computer 1 Insert a memory card into the printer with the label facing the printer control panel.
3 If you are using Windows XP, a “Wha t do you want Windows to do?” screen appe ars. Click Transfer Photos to your computer using the Productivity Studi o . If you are us ing Window s 2000: a From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
3 Click Library . From here, you can choose ho w you want to sort photos. You can also set the minimum file siz e for the photo to appear in the library. 4 Click OK . Changing the Productivity Studio transfer setti ngs 1 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
4 Select Photo Size to select from a list of de fined photo sizes, or click Custom Size to enter a different photo size. Note: If you selected Photo Size , you can click R otate to rot ate your photo 90 degrees clo ckwise. 5 If you selected Custom Size , enter the width and heigh t for your custom- size photo.
Enhancing a photo The Enhance feature lets you make subtle adjustmen ts to the brigh tness, contrast, and sh arpness of an image. 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit. 2 With an image o pen, click the Enhancements tab.
Changing the Bright ness / Contrast set tings of a photo 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit. 2 With an image open , click Enhancements . 3 Click Brig htness / Contrast . 4 Adjust the brightn ess and contrast settin gs.
9 To select multiple prints of a photo, or to select photo sizes other than 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 in.), se lect the options you want in the tabl e. Use the drop -down list in the last column to view and select other sizes. Note: If you want to edit your pho to(s) before printing, click Edit Photo above th e Print Preview pane.
6 When you have finish ed editing your text, click OK . 7 If you want to create another photo greeting card using a different style and/or photo, click Add New Card , and repeat step 3 on p age 52 through step 6 on page 53. 8 If you want to print you r photo greeting card, select Print your Photo Greeting Card from the Share tab.
Using a PictBridge-enabled digita l camera to control printing photos You can connect a PictBrid ge-enabled digital camera to the printer, and use the b uttons on the camera to control and print photos. 1 Insert one end of th e USB cable into the camera.
Printing photos from a digital camera using DPOF If your camera supports Digital Prin t Order Format (DPOF) , you can use the ca mera to specify which pho tos to print and how man y of each. The printer reco gnizes these setti ngs wh en you connect the camera to the printer or insert the memory card of the camera into the printer.
Maintaining the printer Installing print cartridges 1 Open the printer. 2 Remove the used prin t ca rtridge or cartridges. 3 If you are installing new prin t cartridges, remove the tape from the back and bottom of the black cartridge, and insert the cartridge in the left carrier.
6 Close the color cartri dge carrier lid. 7 Close the printer. W F I I P R I N T I N G Note: The printer must be close d to start a new pr int job. 8 Press . Removing a used print cartridge 1 Make sure the printer is on. 2 Lift the access cover. The print cartridge carrier mo ves and stops at the loading po sition, unless the printer is busy.
3 Press down on the cartridge carrier la tch to raise the cartridge carrier lid. 4 Remove the used print ca rtridge. Note: If you are removing both cartri dges, repe at step 3 a nd step 4 for the second cartrid ge.
Aligning the print cartridges 1 Load plain pa per. 2 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click . • In Windows XP and earlier, click Start . 3 Click Programs or All Programs Lexmark 1500 Se ries . 4 Click Lexmark Solution Cen ter . 5 From the Maintenance ta b, click Align to fix blurry ed ges .
4 Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold th e cloth against the con tacts for about three se conds, and then wipe in the d irection shown. 5 With another clean sectio n of the cloth, re peat step 3 and step 4. 6 Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely.
Preserving the print cartridges • Keep new cartridges in th eir packaging until you are ready to install them. • Do not remove a cartrid ge from the pr inter except to re pl ace, clean, or store it in an airtight container. The cartridges do not print correctly if left e xposed for an exte nded period of time.

Troubleshooting If you set up your printer on a wireless ne twork, make sure: • The wireless network is working prop erly. • The computer and prin ter are both connected to the same wireless network. • The printer is within the range of the wireless network.
Power light is blinking The power light blinks wh en it detects errors in the printer. Note: If the light and the A light blink altern ately, see “Power light an d duplex light are blinking alternately” on page 64.
Enable PictBridge printin g from the camera Enable PictBridge printing on the camera b y selecting the co rrect USB mode. If the camera USB sele ction is incorrect, the camera is detected as a USB storage device, or the light and A light blink alternately.
Software does not install These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check your operating system The following operating systems are s upported: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later, and Mac OS X.
Uninstall and reinstall software Uninstall the printer software, an d then reinstall it. Page does not print These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check messages If an error message i s displayed, see “Error messages on the computer screen” on page 104.
4 Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5 Plug the power cord int o the wall outlet. 6 Press to turn the printer on. Removing and reinstalling th e software Uninstall the printer software, and then reinstall it. For more information, see “Remov ing and reinstallin g the software” on page 68.
6 Click Cance l on all New Hardwa re Found screens. 7 Insert the CD, and then fol low the instructions on the computer screen to reinstall the software. Note: If the install screen does not appear automatica lly after you restart your computer, click Start Ru n , and then type D:setup , where D is the letter of your CD-ROM dr ive.
Wi-Fi indicator light is orange These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check cable Make sure the insta llation cable is not connected to the printer. Configure the optional in tern al wireless print server Note: This solution does not apply to printers that have a pre-installed internal wireless print server.
Move your wireless access point (wireless router) to minimize interference There may be temporary inte rference from other devices such as microwav e ovens or other appliances, cordless phones, baby monitors, an d security system cameras. Make sure your wireless access po int (wireless router) is not positioned too close ly to these devices.
3 If the wireless access point (wireless router) responds, you wi ll see several lines appear tha t start with “Reply from”. Turn off and restart the printer. 4 If the wireless access point (wireless router) does not resp ond, it will take several seconds and then you will see “Request timed out.
Remove and reinstall the internal print server 1 Turn off your printer, a nd then unplu g the power co rd from the wall outlet. Warning: Failure to unplug the printer can ca use damage to yo ur printer and to the inter nal wireless prin t server.
3 Reinstall the internal print server. Warning: Wireless print servers are easily damaged by sta tic electricit y. Touch som eth ing metal such as the printer frame before you touc h the wirele ss print server. Check your security keys A security key is like a password.
Wireless network prin ter does not print These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check power Make sure the light is on. Check cable • Make sure the power cabl e is connected to the printer and to th e electrical outlet . • Make sure the USB cable o r the installati on cable is not con nected.
4 Verify that XXXX_Series_nnnnnn_P1 is selected, where XXXX is the model series number of your printer and nnnnnn is the last six nu mbers of the MAC addre ss of your printer. Note: The MAC address is located at th e back of the printer be side the seri al number.
Ping the wireless access point Ping the wireless acce ss point (wireless rout er) to make sure th e network is working. For more information, see “Ping the access point” for Windows or Mac in the “Wireless trouble shooting” section Ping the printer Ping the printer to make su re it is on the network.
Network printer does not show up in the printer select ion list during installation Check whether the printer is on the same wireless network as the computer The SSID of the printer must matc h th e SSID of the wireless network.
Check the installation cable 1 Disconnect the i nstallation ca ble an d check it for any obvious damag e. 2 Firmly plug the rectan gular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. 3 Firmly plug the square end o f the USB cable into the USB port on the back of the printer.
3 If the wireless access point (wireless router) responds, you wi ll see several lines appear tha t start with “Reply from”. Turn off and restart the printer. 4 If the wireless access poin t (wireless router) does not respond, after several se conds you will see “Request timed out.
3 Follow the instructions o n the computer screen. Changing wireless settings after in stallation (Windows users only) To change your pa ssword, network name, or other wi reless setting: 1 Click Programs or All Programs Lexmark 1500 Se ries . 2 Click Wireless Setup Utility .
Check print cartridges If the documen t still does not have the print quality you wa nt, follow these steps: 1 Align the print cartrid ges. For more information, see “Align ing the print cartridge s” on page 59. If print quality has no t improved, contin ue to step 2.
Check paper condition Use only new, un wrinkled paper. Removing and reinstalling th e software Software may not be installed correctly. Poor quality at th e edges of the page These are possible so lutions.
Select a lower print quality 1 From the software application, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 3 Click Quality/Cop ies . 4 From the Quality/Speed a rea, select a lower print quality. Remove and reinstall the software It is sometimes helpful to remove th e existing printer softw are and re install it.
Are you printing a large file? The ink levels displa yed in the printer software are not upd a ted during a print job; they r epresent the ink level at the beginning of a p rint job. The ink levels may se em inconsistent in th e Printing Statu s window when you are p rinting a large file.
Make sure the TrueType fo nt is available on the computer The font you are trying to print may not be available in the progra m font sele ction box. Not all fonts are designed to be printed; make sure the font is a TrueType font. See the program documentation for more info rmation.
Print is too dark or smudged These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Make sure the ink dry be fore handling the paper Remove the paper a s it exits, and let th e ink dry before handling.
3 Click Solution Center . 4 If the Printer S tatus is: • Cannot Communicate , the p roblem could be hardware or prin ter software settings. • Ready or Busy Printing , the problem may be with the pri nter so ftware settings.
• For reduced print qual ity and faster print speed, sele ct Quick Print . • For the default print quality, sel ect Automatic . The paper type sensor determines the print quality b ased on the type of paper it detects lo aded in the paper su pport.
Remove the sticker and tape from the print cartridges 1 Lift the access cover. 2 Remove the print cartridges from the print cartrid ge carrier. 3 Make sure the sticker and tape are removed from the bottom and back of the cartridges. Do the print cartridges have ink? 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click .
Was the document formatted or created for th e printer? Windows may substitute d ifferent fonts. Line an d page breaks may chan ge with the font . Use the program that created the document to fix these problems, and th en save the change s for the next time you print.
Test page does not print These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Make sure the printer is receiving p ower If the light is not on, the printer may not be receivin g power. • Press . • Plug the printer into a different electrical outlet.
Make sure the cable is not damaged or loose Make sure: • The USB cable is not damaged. • The light is on. For more information, see “Printer is plugged in but does not prin t.” Printer is plugged in but does not print These are possible so lutions.
Check the printer status Windows Vista users: 1 Click: • (default Start menu ) Settings Printers . • (Classic Start menu ) Control Panel Printers . 2 Right-click the Lexmark 1500 Series icon. 3 Click Sharing . 4 Click Chang e Sharing Options , and confirm the Windows prompt.
7 Click OK . 8 Click Clos e . 9 Make sure the new por t has been selected on the Ports tab, an d then click Apply . The new port is listed with the printer name.
Experiencing poor quality or incor rect output See the topic that be st describes the problem. • Print is too dark or smudged • Vertical straight lines are not smooth • White lines appear in gra.
Make sure the printer is properly commu nicating with the camera If the PictBridge connection is successful, the ca mera automatically switches to print mode, the PictBridge symbol appears on the camera display, or a messag e reco gnizing the connectio n appears on the came ra display, depending on you r camera.
Paper jam in the duplex unit 1 Push down on the duplex latch as you grasp the dupl ex unit. 2 Pull out th e duplex unit. 3 Firmly grasp th e paper, and gently p ull it out.
5 Press . 6 On your computer, delete or stop the pr int job, and then try sending it again. Paper or specialty media misfeeds These are possible solutions if paper or specialty media mi sfeeds or skews, or if multiple s heets feed or stick together. Try one or more of the followin g: Check paper condition Use only new, un wrinkled paper.
Check printer default and pause settings 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click Control Panel Printers . • In Windows XP, click Start Settings Printers and Faxes . • In Windows 2000, click Start Settings Printers .
Duplex unit does not operate correctly These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check paper size and type Check the paper size and type to ma ke sure the pap er is su pported by the printer. If you are using automatic duplexing, use only letter- or A4-size plain paper.
4 Reinstall the print cartridg es. 5 Snap the lids closed. 6 Close the access cover. 7 Press . Memory card troubleshooting Memory card cannot be inserted There are possible sol utions. Try one or more of the follo wing: Check memory card type Make sure that the typ e of memory card you ar e using can be used in the printer.
Check memory card placement Make sure you inserted the me mory card into the correct slot. For more information, see “Inserting a memory card” on page 43. Check to see if the memory card is damaged Check to see if there is no obvious damage to the memory card.
Check to see if your printer or th e computer is turned on Make sure that your printer a nd your computer are turned on. Check to see if your wireless connection is active If your wireless conn ection is down: 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click Contro l Panel Printers .
If printing using a USB cab le, make sure the ca ble is secure ly attached to both the printer and the computer. Before you print, you ma y need to restart th e computer. General Printing Problem You cannot receive a more specif ic error message beca us e the printer and th e computer do not have bidirectional communication.
Print File Error To use the Print Files functi on, your printer must be connected to a computer, and both the printe r and computer must be on. The error may in clude any of the followi ng causes listed below.
