Safety information Use only the power suppl y and power supp ly cord provid ed with this product or the manufacturer's authorized replacement power supply a nd power supply cord. Connect the power suppl y cord to an electrical outlet that is n ear the product and easily accessible.
Networking the printer General networking Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computer s, printers, Ethernet hubs , wireless access points, and routers connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection.
Scenario 1: Laptop and printer connected wirelessly with Internet • A computer is conn ected to a wire less router by an Ethernet cable. • A laptop and a prin ter are conne cted wirelessly to the router. • The network is conn ected to the Inte rnet th rough a DSL or a cable modem.
Scenario 3: Computer, laptop, and printer connected wirelessly without Internet • A computer, a laptop, and a printer are connected wirel e ssly to a wireless access point.
Printing a network setup page A network setup page lists your printer 's configuration settings, including the IP address and MAC address of the printer. 1 Make sure the prin ter is turned on. 2 Press . The light pulses. 3 Press and hold . 4 While holding , press .
A wireless network where each device communicates with others through a wire less access point (wireless router) is set up in infrastructure mode. A ll devices must have valid IP addresse s and shar e the same SSID and channel. In addition, they mu st share the same SSID and channel as the wireless access p oint (wireless rout er).
Networking the printer Installing and configuring a printer for use on a network lets users at differe nt computers print to a common printer. There are two method s for networking this printer: • Configure a wir eless network conne ction for the printe r.
Installing the printer on a network Follow the instructio ns for the networking me thod you want to use. Make sure the selec ted network is set u p and working properly, and that all relevant device s are turned on . For more inform ation on your spec ific network, see your network doc umentation or consu lt the person who set u p the network.
2 Select a printer fr om your local subnet or from a remote subnet. • If you want to select a particular printer on a remote subnet, type the IP addre ss of the print server to which the printer is connected in the Sear ch by IP field, a nd then pr ess ret urn on your key board.
5 Select XXXX Series <M AC:nnnnnn> , and then click Add . The Printer Browser closes, and the printer is displ ayed in the Printer List dialog. Note: XXXX is the printer series number, and n nnnnn is the last six digits of the printer's MAC address.
3 From Applications, double-click Internet Co nnect . 4 From the toolbar, click AirPort . 5 From the Network pop-up men u, click Create Network . 6 Create a name fo r your ad hoc ne twork, and then click OK . 7 Insert the CD for Macintosh to run the wireless setup.
Printing Getting started Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the printable side, see the instructions th at came with the pape r.
• Card sto ck —A very thick paper used for printing sturdier items, such as greeting cards. • Iron-On transfer —A type of media that ha s a reverse image printed on it that can be ironed onto fabric.
Loading labels You can load up to 25 sheets of labels at a time. 1 Load labels with the print side facing you and the top of the shee t fed into the printer first. 2 Make sure: • The print side of the la bels faces you. • The top of the labels feed s into the printer first.
Notes: • Transparencies with paper backing sheets are not re commended. • Transparencies require more drying time. Remove each transparency as it exit s, and allow it to dry to avoid ink smudging.
4 Feed the leading ed ge of the banner paper into the printer first. W F I I P R I N T I N G 5 Make sure: • The paper is loaded in the center of the paper support.

Printing envelopes 1 Load envelopes. Notes: • Do not load envelopes with holes, perforations, cuto uts, deep embossing, metal clasps, m etal folding bars, string ties, or exposed flap adh esive. • Make sure the print side of the envelopes faces you.

6 Customize the se ttings in the Page Setup dialog. a With your docu ment open, choose Fi le Page Setup . b From the Settings p op-up menu, choose Page Attributes . c From the “Format for” pop-up me nu, choose the printer. d From the Paper Size p op-up menu, choose A4 (Banner) or US Letter (Banne r) .
Assembling a booklet 1 Flip the printed stack of papers over in the p aper exit tray. 2 Take the first bundle from the stack, fold it in ha lf, and then set it aside with the front page d own. 3 Take the next bund le from the stack, fold it in half, and then stack it with the front page down on top of the first bundle.

6 From the third p op-up menu from the to p, select the settings you want to a djust, and then adjust the settings. You can specify print qu ality, the number of co pies to pr in t, the type of paper you're printi ng on, and how yo u want the pages to print.
Working with photos Notes: • For best results wh en printing phot os or other high-quality images, use Lexmark Photo Paper or Le xmark PerfectFinish Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Yo ur print cartridges are not compatibl e with this type of pape r.
Slots Memory card 2 • Compact Flash Type I an d Type II • Microdrive 2 Wait for the l ight located near the memory card slots on the printer to come on.
Inserting a flash drive 1 Insert the flash drive in to the PictBrid ge port on the front of the printer. Note: An adapter may be necessary if your fla sh drive does not fit directly into the po rt. 2 When the printer recognizes that a flash drive is installed, appears on the Finder deskt op.
Removing a memory card or flash drive A memory card or a flash drive has to be properly remove d from the printer to avoid corruption of the d evice or loss of stored data. Warning: Do not remove a memory device fr om the print er while actively printing, reading, or writin g from it.
Transferring photos from a me mory device to the computer Transferring photos from a memory device to the computer 1 Insert a memory card or a fl ash drive th at contains the photos you want to transfer. 2 Wait for to appear on the Finder desktop, and th en double- click it to view the cont ents of the memory card or flash drive.
Printing photos from photo storage devices Printing photos from a memory card or flash drive Note: Make sure the printer is conne cted to the computer through a USB cable. You cann ot print directly from a memory device if yo u are using a wire less connection.
Using a PictBridge-enabled digita l camera to control printing photos You can connect a PictBrid ge-enabled digital camera to the printer, and use the buttons on the camera to control and print photos. 1 Insert one end of th e USB cable into the c amera.

Use the To 7 Wi-Fi indicator Check wireless status : • Off indicates that the pr inter is not turned on or that no wireless optio n is installed. • Orange – indicates that th e printer is ready .

4 Double-click the Install icon. 5 Follow the instructions o n the computer scre en. Using the World Wide Web: 1 Go to the Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com. 2 From the home page, navigate thro ugh th e menu selection, and then click Drivers & Downloads.

From here Choose To Layout Pages per Sheet Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper. Layout Di rection Specify the ar rangement of multiple pages on a sing le sheet. Border Print a border ar ound each pa ge. Two-Sided Prin t on both sides of the paper.
From here Choose To Cover Pa ge Note: This option is available only in Mac OS X version 10.4 or later. Print Cover Page Choose any of these op tions: • None • Before document • After document Co.
These buttons ar e at the bottom of the Prin t dialog: Click To Go to the Help Center to find more information. Preview Get a full view of a photo, and see addit ional options for viewing or reviewing it prior to printing. Save as PDF (in Mac OS X version 10.

6 Choose whether to specify a PIN to be able to access your computer. Note: The PIN should be a comb ination of four digits from 1 –9. 7 Click Ap ply . These buttons are at the bottom of the Network Card Reader d ialog: Click To + Add a network printer to the list.

Maintaining the printer Print cartridges Installing print cartridges 1 If you are install i ng new print cartridges, re move the st icker and tape from the back and b ottom of the cartridges. 1 2 1 2 Warning: Do not touch the gold contact area on the back o r the metal nozzles on the bottom of the cartrid ges.

4 Remove the used print ca rtridge. To recycle the used cartridge, see “R ecycling Lexmark prod ucts” on page 67. If the cartridge you removed is not empty and you want to use it later, see “Preservin g the print cart ridges” on page 62.
Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts 1 Remove the print cartridges. 2 Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 3 Gently hold the cl oth against the nozzles fo r about three seco nds, and then wipe in the direction shown.
Preserving the print cartridges • Keep new cartridges in th eir packaging until you are ready to install them. • Do not remove a cartrid ge from the printer except to re p lace, clean, or store it in an airtight container. The cartridges do not print correctly if left e xposed for an extended period of time.
Check print cartridges If the documen t still does not have the print quality you want, follow these step s: 1 Align the print cartrid ges. For more information, see “Aligning the print cartri dges” on page 60. If print quality has no t improved, continue to step 2.
To prevent the message from appearing a gain for the indicated cartridge(s): • Replace your cartridge(s) with new Lexmark print cartridge(s). • If you are prin ting from a computer, click Learn more on the message, select the check box, and click Close .

Troubleshooting Setup troubleshooting Power button is not lit These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Press power button Make sure the prin ter is on by pressing . Disconnect and reconnect the power cord 1 Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and the n from the pri nter.
Load paper The printer is out of paper. Load more pape r to continue prin ting. For more informatio n, see “Loadin g paper” on page 16. Clear the paper jam Check to see if the paper jam is in the paper support or in the duplex unit, and then remove the paper jam.
Make sure the paper size setting on th e camera is sup ported by the printer Use only the followin g paper sizes when prin ting photos from your camera: • 3.5 x 5 inches • 4 x 6 inches • 4 x 8 inches • 5 x 7 inches • 10 x 20 inches • Letter (8 .
Make sure the cable is not damaged or loose Make sure: • The USB cable is not damaged. • The light i s on. For more information, see the related topic below.
Printer does not appear in the Printer Selection dialog The Printer Selection dialog appears in the Le xmark Setup A ssistant during install ation. If the printer does not appear in the Printer Selectio n dialog, try one or more of these possible solutions.
4 From the Default Browser tab, check und er Connections whet her the printer you like to be connected to is shar ed. If so, click the printer name. 5 Click Ad d . Restart the host computer and the remote computer Try printing again. Printer is plugged in but does not print These are possible so lutions.
Make sure the cartridges are properly installed With the front of the printer facing you, check for proper pr int cartridge installation. If you are using a color cartridge, make sure it is properly insta lled in the right carrie r. If you are using a black cartridge or photo cartridge, make sure it is properly installe d i n the left car rier.
Check the ink levels Check the ink levels, an d install new print cartridges if necessary. Remove tape on cartridges 1 Remove the print cartridges. 2 Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed.
Reinstall the software 1 Uninstall the printer software, an d then reinstall it. For more information, see “Removing an d reinstalling the software” on page 107. 2 If the software still does not install correctly, visit our Web site at www.lexmark.
3 From the Maintenance ta b, check the ink levels of the cartridges. If an exclamation point (!) ap pears on a cartridge, the ink le vel is low. Install a new cartridge. Are the cartridges low on ink? 1 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 1500 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Lexmark 1500 Ser ies Utility icon. 3 From the Maintenance ta b, check the ink levels of the cartridges. If an exclamation point (!) ap pears on a cartridge, the ink le vel is low.
Printer is configured correctly, but cannot be found on the networ k Make sure: • The printer has powe r and the light is on. • The printer is within range of the wireless network. • The printer is located away from other electronic devices that may in terf ere with the wireless signal.
Note: If more than one printer appears in the ”Select your pr inter” list, pick the printe r with th e MAC address that matches the address on the back of your printer. Wi-Fi indicator light is not lit Check power If the light is not on, se e “Power bu tton is not lit” o n page 69 .
3 Reinstall the internal print server. Warning: Wireless print servers are easily damaged by static electricit y. Touch somet h ing metal such as the printer frame before you touc h the wirele ss print server.
Wireless printer is no longer working These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check power • Make sure the pr inter power light is on. For more informat ion, see “Powe r button is not lit” in the “Troubles hooting” chapter.
Notes: • If you change network settings, change them on a ll th e network devices before ch anging them for the wireless access point (wireless router).
Notes: • Make sure you copy the m down exactly, including a ny capital letters. • Store the SSID and the security keys in a safe place f or futu re refer ence. Check your security keys A security key is like a password. All devices on the same network will shar e the same security key.
Move your computer and/or printer Move the computer an d/or printer closer to the w ireless a ccess point (wireless router). Although the possible distan ce between devi ces in 802.11b or 802.11g n etworks is 300 fe et, the effective range for optimal performance is generally 100–150 feet.
c If necessary, select Network Status in the Show po p-up menu. The AirPort status indi cator should be green. Green me ans the port is active (turned on) and connected. Notes: • Yellow means the port i s ac tive but is not connected. • Red means the port has not been configured.
Check the installation cable 1 Disconnect the i nstallation cable , and check it for any obvio us damage. 2 Firmly plug the rectan gular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. 3 Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the USB port on the back of the printer.
e Click TCP/IP . • The IP address appears as four sets of number s separated by periods, such as 192.168.0.100. • The "Router " entry is ty pically the wi reless access point (wireless router). 2 Ping the wireless access point (wireless router).
5 Wait for the printer to turn on, and then re lease A . 6 Close the access cover. 7 Wait for the light to stop blinking. The internal wireless print se rver is reset to factory default setting s.
Ink levels seem to go down too quickly These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Are you printing photos or documents with a large numb er of graphics? Because photos and graphics require more ink th an text documents, ink usag e increases when you print photos or graphics.
Review steps to improve print quality See “Improving print quality” on page 62. Remove sheets as they are printed To avoid ink sm udging when you are working with the following media , remove each.
4 Choose an orientatio n. 5 Click OK . Make sure paper size ma tches the printer setting 1 From the software application, click File Page Setup . 2 From the “Format for” pop-up me nu, choose 1500 Ser ies . 3 From the Paper Size pop-up menu, check the pa per size.
To view the print si ze settings on your digital camera , see the documentation that came with your camera. Photo smudges or scratches To prevent photo smudging or scratchin g, avoid touching th e printed surface wit h your fingers or sharp ob jects.
Printed characters are improperly formed or are no t aligned correctly These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Align the print cartridges The cartridges may be ou t of alignment. 1 Load plain pa per. 2 From the Finder desktop, doubl e-click the Lexma rk 1500 Series folder.
4 From the Print Quality menu , select the appropriate print quality for the document: • Automa tic —Default selection. • Quick Print —Best for text-only do cuments with reduced print qu ality but faster print speed. • Normal —Recommend ed for most types of documents.
Adjust the application settings for the docu ment Use a different fill pattern in the a pplication you are using to print the gr aphics. For more informatio n, see the documentation that came with the appli c ation. Perform maintenance on the print cartridges You may need to clea n the print cartridge nozzle s.
Check the network connection If the printer and co mputer are connected over a networ k, make sure that the co rrect host and de vice are communicating.
Check for paper jams Check for and clear a ny paper jams. For more in formation, see “Paper jam in the duplex unit” on page 100. Make sure the duplex unit is properly in stalled Remove the duplex u nit and re instal l it. For more information, see “Paper jam in the duplex unit” on p age 100.
Paper jam in the duplex unit 1 Push down on the duplex latch as you grasp the d uplex unit. 2 Pull out th e duplex unit. 3 Firmly grasp th e paper, and ge ntly pull it out.
5 Press . 6 On your computer, delete or stop the pr int job, and then try sending it again . Paper or specialty media misfeeds These are the possible solu tions. Try one or more o f the following: Check paper condition Use only new, un wrinkled paper.
Make sure the printer is set as the defa ult printer and is not on hold or paused To set printer as default: 1 From the Finder de sktop, choose A pplications Utilities Print Center or Printer Setup Utility , depending on the operating sys tem version you are u sing.
Cartridge carrier jam These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Remove any obstructions in the cartridge carrier 1 Lift the access cover. 2 Remove any objects bloc king the path o f the print cartridge carrier. 3 Make sure the cartridge carrier lids are closed.
5 Snap the lids closed. 6 Close the access cover. 7 Press . Memory card reader and PictBridge troubleshooting Memory card cannot be inserted There are possible sol u tions. Try one or more of the following: Check memory card type Make sure that the typ e of memory card you a re using can be used in the printer.
Make sure the USB cable is connected 1 Check that th e USB cable is con nected to the compute r. The USB port on the back o f the compu ter is marked by the USB symbol. Plug the long, fla t end of the USB cabl e into this port. 2 Make sure th at the smaller, more square end of th e USB cable is plugged into the ba ck of the printer.
Make sure you inserted a valid d evice into th e PictBridge port Only the following devices are recog n ized by the PictBridge port: • PictBridge-enabled dig ital camera • Flash drive Any other USB devices are not recogni zed.
3 Select your wireless pr inter, and then cl ick Connect . 4 Insert the memory ca rd into the print er. Your photos are down loaded and displayed as thumbnail images. 5 Select the thumbnail ima g es you want to save , and then click Save . 6 Open your downloaded imag es using an app lication su ch as iPhoto or Preview.
6 Close the access cover. 7 Wait for the light to stop blinking. The printer is reset to facto ry default settings. Troubleshooting 108.
