1 Chapter 1 Introduction This Chapter provides an overview of the FBR-1416's features and capabili- ties. Congratulations on the purchas e of your new FBR-1416. The FBR-1416 is a multi-function device providing the followi ng services: • Shared Broadband Internet Access for all LAN users.

2 Chapter 2 Installation This Chapter covers the physica l installation of the FBR-1416. Requirements • Network cables. Use standard 10/100BaseT network (UTP) cables wit h RJ45 connectors. • TCP/IP protocol m ust be installed on all PCs. • For Internet Access, an Internet Access account with an ISP, and a DSL connection.
Installation 4. Power Up Connect the supplied power adapt er to the FBR-1416 and power up. Use only the power adapter provided. Usi ng a different one may cause hardware dam age 5. Check the LEDs • The Power LED should be ON. • The Status LED should flash, then turn Off.
Chapter 3 Setup This Chapter provides Se tup details of the FBR-1416. Overview This chapter describes the setup procedure for: • Internet Access • LAN configuration • Assigning a Password to protect the confi guration data. PCs on your local LAN m ay also require configurati on.
Setup Configuration Program The FBR-1416 contains an HTTP server. This enables y ou to connect to it, and configure i t, using your Web Browser. Your Browser must support JavaScript . The configuration program has been tested on the following browsers: • Netscape V4.
FBR-1416 User Guide If you can't connect If the FBR-1416 does not respond, check the foll owing: • The FBR-1416 is properly i nstalled, LAN connection i s OK, and it is powered ON. You can test the connection by using the "Ping" comm and: • Open the MS-DOS window or command prom pt window.
Setup Static (Fixed) IP Address Your ISP allocates a permanent IP Address to you. Usually, the connection is "Al- ways on". a) ADSL parameters (VPI and VCI) may be required, if they cannot be detected automa tically. b) IP Address allocated to you, and related information, such as Network Mask, Gateway IP address, and DNS address.
FBR-1416 User Guide Home Screen After finishing the Setup W izard, you will see the Home screen. When you connect in future, you will see this screen when you connect . Use the default value unless the address is already in use or your LAN is using a different IP address range.
Setup • The client request is ma de when the client device start s up (boots). • The DHCP Server provides the Gateway and DNS addresses to the clien t, as well as allocating an IP Address. • The FBR-1416 can act as a DHCP server . • Windows 95/98/ME and other non-Server ve rsions of Windows will act as a DHCP client .

4 Chapter 4 PC Configuration This Chapter detail s the PC Configurat ion required on the local ( "Internal") LAN. Overview For each PC, the following may need to be configured: • TCP/IP ne.
FBR-1416 User Guide Checking TCP/IP Settings - Windows 9x/ME: 1. Select Control Panel - Net work . You should see a screen like t he following: Figure 10: Network Configuration 2. Select the TCP/IP protocol for your network card. 3. Click on the Properti es button.
PC Configuration • On the Gateway tab, enter the FBR-1416' s IP address in the New Gateway field and click Add , as shown below. Your LAN administ rator can advise you of the IP Address they as- signed to the FBR-1416. Figure 12: Gateway Tab (Win 95/98) • On the DNS Configurati on tab, ensure Enable DNS is selected.

Select the appropriate radi o button - Obtain an IP address from a DHC P Server or Specify an IP Address , as explained below. Obtain an IP address from a DHCP Server This is the default Windows setting.

FBR-1416 User Guide Internet Access To configure your PCs to use the FBR-1416 for Internet access: • Ensure that the DSL modem, Ca ble modem , or other permanent connect ion is functional. • Use the following procedure to configure y our Browser to access the Internet via the LAN, rather than by a Dial-up connection.
PC Configuration Macintosh Clients From your Macintosh, you can access the Inte rnet via the FBR-1416. The procedure is as follows. 1. Open the TCP/IP Control Panel. 2. Select Ethernet from the Connect via pop-up m enu. 3. Select Using DHCP Server from the Confi gure pop-up menu.
Chapter 5 Operation and Status This Chapter details the operation of the FBR-1416 and the status screens. Operation Once both the FBR-1416 and the PCs are configured, operation is automatic. However, there are some situations where add iti onal Internet configurat ion may be requi red.
Operation and Status Connection Method This indicates the current connecti on method, as set i n the Setup Wizard . Internet Connection This indicates the current status of the Internet C onnection • Connected - Connection exists • Not connected - No current connection establi shed.
FBR-1416 User Guide Connection Status - PPPoE & PPPoA If using PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) or PPPoA ( PPP over ATM), a screen like the following example will be displayed when the "C onnection Details" button is clicked.
Operation and Status Connection Details - Dynamic IP Address If your access method is "Direct" (no login), with a Dynam ic IP address, a screen like the following example will be displayed when th e "Connection Details" button is clicked.

Chapter 6 Advanced Features This Chapter explains when and how to use the FBR-1416's "Advanced" Fea- tures. 35 Overview The following advanced features are provided: • Advanced Intern.
FBR-1416 User Guide URL Filter If you want to limit access to certain sites on the Internet, you can use this feature. The URL filter will check each Web site access. If the address, or part of the address, is included in the block site list, access will be denied.
Advanced Features Trusted PC Allow Trusted PC Enable this to allow one computer to have unrestricted access to the Internet. For this PC, the URL filter will be ignored. If enabled, you must select the PC to be th e tru sted PC. Trusted PC Select the PC to be the Trusted PC.

Advanced Features Firewall Rules The Firewall Rules screen allows you to define "Firewall Rules" which can allow or p r event certain traffic. By default: • All Outgoing traffic is permitted. • All Incoming traffic is denied. "Traffic" means incomi ng connec tion attempts, not packets.
FBR-1416 User Guide WAN Users The WAN IP address or addresses covered by this rule. Log Indicates whether or not connections covered by this rule shoul d be logged. Buttons Use the Add button to create a new rule. The other buttons - Edit , Move , or Delete - require that a rule be selected first.

Sel ect the desired action. • Always - always log traffic considered by this rule, whether it matches or not . (This is useful when debugging y our rules.) • Never - never log traffic considered by this ru le, wh ether it matches or not.
Advanced Features • To define the Schedule used in th ese selections, use the "Schedule" screen. LAN Users Select the desired option to det ermine which PCs are covered by this rule: • Any - All PCs are covered by this rule. • Single PC - Only the selected PC is covered by this ru le.
FBR-1416 User Guide Firewall Services This screen is used to modify the list of Services which are available when creating Firewall Rules. Advanced Features Add/Edit Service This screen is displayed when the Add or Edit button on the Services screen is clicked. If adding a new service, this will be blank, and y ou should enter a suitable nam e.
FBR-1416 User Guide Options This screen allows advanced users to enter or change a number of sett ings. For normal opera- tion, there is no n eed to use this screen or change any settings.
Advanced Features Schedule This Schedule can be used fo r the Firewall Rules and the URL filter. Figure 35: Default Schedule Screen Data – Default Schedule Screen Schedule Sunday, Mon- day… Use these checkboxes to select the desired days. Start Time Enter the start using a 24 hr clock.
FBR-1416 User Guide Current Time This di splays the current ti me on the FBR -1416. Virtual Servers This feature, sometimes called Port Forwarding , allows y ou to make Servers on your LAN accessible to Internet users.
Advanced Features IP address. This technology works even if your ISP al locates dynami c IP addresses (IP address is allocated upon connection, so it may change each tim e you connect). 7 Chapter 7 Advanced Administration This Chapter explains the settings avail able via the "Administration" section of the menu. Overview Normally, it is not necessary to use these scr eens, or change any settings.
FBR-1416 User Guide PC Database The PC Database is used whenever you need to select a PC (e.g. for the "DMZ" PC). • It eliminates the need to enter IP addresses.
Advanced Administration Data - PC Database Screen Known PCs This lists all current entries. Data displayed is name (IP Address) type . The "type" indicates whether the PC is connected to the LAN. Name If adding a new PC to th e list, en ter its name here.
FBR-1416 User Guide PC Database (Admin) This screen is display ed if the "Advanced Admi nistration" button on t he PC Database is clicked. Advanced Administration MAC Address Select the appropriate opt ion • Automatic discovery - Select this to have the FBR-1416 contact the PC and find its MAC address. This is only possibl e if the PC is connected to the LAN and powered On. • MAC address is - Enter the MAC address on the PC.
FBR-1416 User Guide Config File This feature allows you to downl oad the current settings from the FBR-1416, and save them to a file on your PC. You can restore a previously-downloaded confi guration file to t he FBR-1416, by uploading i t to the FBR-1416.
Advanced Administration Logs The Logs record various types of activit y on the FBR-1416. This data is useful for trouble- shooting, but enabling all logs will generate a large amount of data and adversely affect performance. Since only a lim ited am ount of log data can be stored in t he FBR-1416, log data can also be E- mailed to your PC.
FBR-1416 User Guide Logs Include (Checkboxes) Use these checkboxes to determine whi ch events are included in the log. Checkin g all options will increase the size o f the log, so it is good practice to disable any events which are not really re- quired.

FBR-1416 User Guide E-mail Logs Send Logs Select the desired option for sendi ng the log by E-ma il. • Never (default) - This feature is disabl ed; Logs are not sent. • When log is fu ll - Th e time is not fixed. The log will be sent when the log is full, which will d epend on the volume of traffic.
Advanced Administration Network Diagnostics This screen allows you to perform a "Ping" or a "DNS lookup". These activities can be useful in solving network problem s.
