Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some product damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

P ower cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cor ds and power adapters supplied by the pr oduct manufactur er . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you int end to use with your computer equipment appears t o be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
General battery notice DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by L enovo contain a coin cell battery t o provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile pr oducts, such as notebook computers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack t o pr ovide syst em power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell batt er y notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell batt er y, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The battery contains lithium and can e xplode if not pr operly used, handled, or disposed of.
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can gener ate heat when turned on and when batteries are charging.

P ower conservation Fn+F4 Put your computer into sleep mode. T o r eturn to normal oper ation, pr ess the Fn key only . If you want to use the combination to put the comput er into hibernation mode or do-nothing mode, change the settings in the P ower Manager progr am.
Changing the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 Pr ess Fn+F6 t o open the Communications settings window . F r om this window , you can take a picture, change the camer a and audio settings, and launch the Communications Utility pr ogram. Adjusting the brightness level of the computer display • Fn+F8 : The computer display becomes dimmer .

P ower management When you need to use your computer away fr om electrical outlets, you depend on battery power to keep your computer running. Different computer components consume power at differ ent rat es. The more you use the power-int ensive components, the faster you consume battery power .
Charging the battery When you check battery status and nd that the per centage of power remaining is low or when the power alarm alerts you that the remaining power is low , you need to char ge your batt ery or r eplace it with a charged battery .
• Hibernation By using this mode, you can turn off your comput er complet ely without saving les or e xiting fr om any applications that ar e running. When the computer enters hibernation, all open applications, folders, and les ar e saved to the hard disk, and then the computer turns off.
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
WiMAX This long-r ange wireless data transmission technology based on the 802.16 standar d is e xpected to provide the user a last mile br oadband connectivity similar to that provided by cable or ADSL, but without the need to physically connect a cable to the personal computer .
T o use the wireless WAN featur e, start the Access Connections progr am. F or information on how to start the Access Connections progr am, see “ Accessing ThinkV antage applications on the Windows 7 oper ating system” on page 13.
Checking wir eless connection status Y ou can check your comput er wir eless connection status and wir eless signal strength thr ough the Access Connections gauge on the taskbar , or through the Access Connections icon and wir eless status icon on the taskbar .
– P ower to the wireless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wir eless connection is mar ginal. – P ower to the wireless radio is on. The signal str ength of the wir eless connection is poor . T o impr ove signal strength, move your system closer to the wireless access point.
Y ou can set any r esolution for either the computer display or the e xternal monitor . When you use both at the same time, the resolution of both is the same. If you set a higher resolution for the computer display, you can see only part of the screen at a time.

If the option for enabling the DVI monitor in the Display P roperties window is not displayed, try closing the window and opening it again.

The master password can be set and used only by a syst em administrat or . Like a mast er key, it enables the administrat or to get access to any hard disk drive in a syst em.

Disk Encryption hard disk drive and Encryption solid state drive Some models contain the Disk Encryption hard disk drive or Encryption solid state drive. This featur e helps to pr otect your comput er against security attacks on media, NAND ash or device contr ollers by use of a har dware encryption chip.
T o set the security chip, you have t o start Client Security Solution, and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: Client Security Solution is not pr einstalled on Windows 7 models. T o congure the security chip, you need to download the latest version of Client Security Solution from the Lenovo W eb sit e.

P er forming a recovery operation T o perform a recovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
• T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een. • T o r estore your hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or to r estore your hard disk drive to the factory default settings, click Restore your system and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB hard disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Ent er . The rescue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using the secondary internal har d disk drive, set the secondary internal hard disk drive as the rst boot device in the startup device sequence to start the rescue medium.
Solving r ecover y problems If you ar e unable to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace or the Windows envir onment, do one of the following: • Use a rescue medium t o start the Rescue and Recovery workspace. See “Creating and using a r escue medium” on page 64 .
Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter provides instructions on how to install or replace some har dware for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 67 • “Replacing the .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
3. Unlock the battery latch 1 and hold the latch 2 in the unlocked position. 4. Remove the battery . 5. Slide the new battery int o the computer . Chapter 6 .
6. Make sure that the battery latch t o the locked position. 7. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions. Y our comput er might require a SIM card to establish wir eless WAN connections.
5. Insert the new SIM car d rmly int o the slot. 6. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 7. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive Before you start, print these instructions.
4. Loosen the scr ew that secures the slot cover . Then remove the cover . 5. Remove the hard disk drive or solid stat e drive by pulling out the tab. 6. Detach the side rubber r ails from the hard disk drive or the side spacer rails fr om the solid state drive.
7. Attach the side rubber rails to the new hard disk drive or the side spacer r ails t o the new solid state drive. 8. Insert the new hard disk drive or solid state drive into the slot. 9. Reinstall the slot cover and tighten the screw to secure it. 10.
Note: The oper ating speed of the memory module has dependency on the syst em conguration. In some conditions, the memory in your computer might not be able to oper ate at the maximum speed. Attention: Before you start installing a memory module, touch a metal table or a gr ounded metal object.
6. With the notched end of the memory module towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module into the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees 1 ; then pr ess it in rmly 2 . 7. Pivot the memory module downward until it snaps into place.
3. If the Installed memory item shows a different amount of memory from what you installed, check whether you have corr ectly followed the instructions in this section. Replacing the keyboar d Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
6. P ush hard in the dir ection shown by the arrows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 . 7. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected. Hold the keyboard above the computer 1 , and then detach the connect or 2 .

Removing the palm rest T o r emove the palm r est, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables from the computer . Wait for three to ve minut es, till the inside of the computer cools. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over .
Installing the palm rest T o install the palm rest, do the following: 1. Attach the palm r est, making sur e the latches near the t op left and right edges of the palm r est ar e secure. 2. P ress the edge of the palm r est until it clicks into place.
3. Attach the palm r est cable 1 by ipping the ip-lock ZIF connector 2 downwards. 4. Reinstall the screws to secur e the palm rest. 82 User Guide.
5. Reinstall the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboar d” on page 76. 6. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 7. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the speaker Before you start, print these instructions.
7. P ut the new speaker in place and install the screw . Then connect the cable. 8. Reinstall the palm r est. See “Replacing the palm r est” on page 79. 9. Reinstall the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboar d” on page 76. 10. Reinstall the batt ery .

Detaching the ThinkP ad Battery 19+ T o detach the ThinkP ad Batt ery 19+, do the following: 1. Unlock the batt ery latch by sliding it to the unlocked position.
The ThinkP ad Battery 19+ also can be charged with a comput er attached. In this way, both the main battery and the ThinkP ad Battery 19+ will be charged. ThinkP ad Ultr aBase Series 3 Y our computer supports the ThinkP ad Ultr aBase Series 3, which is a docking solution pr ovided by Lenovo t o expand the working capabilities of your computer .

2. Align the fr ont of the comput er with the fr ont of the ThinkPad Ultr aBase Series 3. 3. Ensure that the guides of the ThinkP ad Ultr aBase Series 3 align with the holes in the computer 1 . Then secure the computer in place 2 . The docking status indicator lights.
Note: Y ou can turn the key clockwise to lock it. Then, keep the key in a safe place. Do not lose this key; otherwise, you will be unable t o detach the comput er from the ThinkP ad Ultr aBase Series 3.
Detaching the computer T o detach your computer fr om the ThinkP ad UltraBase Series 3, do the following: 1. Ensure that the syst em lock key of the ThinkP ad Ultr aBase Series 3 is in the unlocked (vertical) position. 2. Close the comput er display .
1 Unlocked position When the lock is in this position, your computer is not secur ed. 2 L ocked position When the lock is in this position, the ThinkP ad UltraBase Series 3 is locked, and the computer cannot be removed from the ThinkP ad UltraBase Series 3.

2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sour ces fr om the computer (battery and the ac power adapter). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power adapt er while keeping the battery out of the computer . If the computer does not turn back on, continue with step 3.
• Message : 0187: EAIA data access error Solution : The access to EEPROM is failed. Have the computer serviced. • Message : 0188: Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area Solution : The EEPROM checksum is not correct (block # 0 and 1). The system board should be replaced, and the box serial number needs t o be r einstalled.
Solution : The thermal sensor has problem. Shut down the computer immediately and have the comput er serviced. • Message : This syst em does not support batt eries that are not genuine Lenovo made or authorized. The system will continue to boot, but may not char ge unauthorized batteries.
• Problem : My scr een goes blank while the computer is on. Solution : Y our scr een saver or power management might have been enabled. Do either of the following: – T ouch the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, or press a k ey t o exit the screen saver .
The network cable must be securely connected both to the E thernet connector of your comput er and to the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance from the comput er to hub is 100 met ers. If the cable is connected and the distance is within acceptable limits but the problem persists, try a different cable.
Check the Network Name (SSID) and your encryption information. Use the Access Connections progr am to verify this case-sensitive information. A wireless W AN pr oblem Problem : A message is displayed indicating that an unauthoriz ed W AN card is installed.
1. T urn off the computer . 2. Remove the external numeric keypad. 3. T urn on the computer and try using the keyboar d again. If the k eyboard problem is resolved, carefully r econnect the e xternal numeric keypad and the ext ernal keyboard. Make sur e that you have seat ed the connectors corr ectly .
8. Click the Monitor tab. Check whether the color quality is correctly set, and make sur e that the other information also is corr ect. 9. Click the Properties butt on. If you are pr ompted for an administrat or password or conrmation, type the password or provide conrmation.

Battery and power pr oblems This topic contains instructions on troubleshooting batt ery and power pr oblems. Battery pr oblems • Problem : The battery pack cannot be fully charged in the standar d char ge time when the comput er is powered off. Solution : The batt er y pack might be over -discharged.
