Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Although ther e ar e no moving parts in your computer after the power cor d has been disconnect ed, the following warnings are r equired for your safety .
Extension cords and relat ed devices Ensure that e xtension cor ds, surge prot ectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are rat ed to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input r ating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any e xternal device cables other than USB cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your computer . T o avoid possible damage to attached devices, wait at least ve seconds aft er the computer is shut down to disconnect e xternal devices.
The battery pack should be stored at r oom temperature, charged t o approximately 30 t o 50% of capacity . W e recommend that battery pack be charged about once per year to pr event overdischarge. Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced.
• V entilation slots, fans and/or heat sinks are pr ovided with the product for safety, comfort, and reliable operation. These featur es might inadvertently become block ed by placing the product on a bed, sofa, carpet, or other exible surface. Never block, cover , or disable these features.
4. Remove all cables from devices. The power cord must be disconnected from the wall outlet or receptacle before installing all other electrical cables connected to the computer . The power cord may be reconnected t o the wall outlet or r eceptacle only after all other electrical cables have been connected to the computer .

Chapter 1. Pr oduct overview This chapter pr ovides information about the locations of connectors, locations of important product labels, computer featur es, specications, oper ating environment, and pr einstalled pr ograms.
1 Integrated camera Use the integr ated camer a to take pictur es or hold a video conference. F or mor e information, see “Using the integr ated camer a” on page 38. 2 System status indicator (illuminated ThinkP ad logo) The illuminated ThinkP ad logo on the palm r est functions as a system status indicat or .

4 P ower-status indicator Y our computer has a power status indicat or to show the ac power adapt er status of your computer . F or more information, see “P ower status indicator” on page 8. 5 P ower jack Connect the ac power adapter t o the power jack to provide ac power to the computer and char ge the battery .
3 USB 3.0 connectors The Universal Serial Bus (USB) 3.0 connectors are used for connecting devices compatible with a USB interface, such as a USB print er or a digital camer a. Note: When you attach a USB cable to the connector , mak e sure that the USB mark is facing upward.

The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Red: The computer is on (in normal mode). • F ast blinking r ed: The computer is entering sleep or hibernation mode. • Slow blinking red: The comput er is in sleep mode. • Off: The computer is off or in hibernation mode.
Wireless status indicator The wireless status indicator is located on the out er lid of the computer . The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Solid gr een: The wireless featur es of the computer ar e on. • Off: The wir eless features of the computer are off.
Locating important product information This section pr ovides information to help you locate your machine type and model label, FCC ID and IC Certication label, and the Micr osoft ® Certicate of Authenticity (COA) label. Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er .
If you have pur chased a wireless W AN enabled computer , the wir eless WAN PCI Expr ess Half Mini Car d is preinstalled at the fact ory . If you need t o remove this card for r epair or replacement, follow the procedur e in “Replacing a PCI Express Mini Car d for wir eless LAN connection” on page 68.

If the PCI Expr ess Mini Car d installed in your computer supports GPS, your computer can r eceive signals from GPS sat ellites and det ermine its location. If your comput er is connected to the Int ernet, you can nd your location on a r eal-time map provided by Google Maps or Microsoft Bing ™ Maps.
The Rescue and Recovery progr am is a one-butt on r ecovery and r estore solution that includes a set of self-recovery t ools to help you diagnose computer pr oblems, get help, and recover fr om syst em crashes, even if you cannot start the Windows operating system.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer” on page 19 .
• T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without exiting pr ograms or saving les, see “P ower -saving modes” on page 28. • T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, change power plan settings.
Special k eys and butt ons Y our comput er has sever al special function keys and buttons to help you work mor e easily and effectively . F unction key combinations T o use the Fn function key combinations, press and hold the Fn key 1 ; then press one of the function keys 2 .
Wireless featur es • Fn+F5 Enable or disable the built-in wireless networking featur es. Launching the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 – F or Windows 7: Open the Communications settings window , in which you can pr eview your video image, take a snapshot of your curr ent image, and change the camer a and audio settings.
Windows k ey On the Windows 7 operating syst em, pr ess the Windows key t o open the S tart menu. On the Windows 8 operating system, press the Windows key t o switch between the curr ent workspace and the Start scr een. Y ou also can use the Windows key together with another k ey t o achieve other functions.
The T r ackP oint cent er button 3 , called the scr oll bar , enables you to scr oll W eb pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the gr aphic scr oll bars on the side of the window . If you ar e not familiar with the T r ackP oint pointing device, these instructions will help you get started: 1.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the t ouch pad The touch pad is a pad 1 below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bott om of the keyboar d.
Disabling the Ultr aNav pointing device and using an external mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T r ackP oint pointing device and the touch pad.
• F or Windows 8: Open the L enovo Support progr am and click Battery Health , or open the L enovo Settings progr am and click P ower . Using the ac power adapter The power to run your comput er can come either fr om the lithium-ion (Li-ion) batt er y pack pr ovided with it, or fr om ac power through the ac power adapt er .
• Use the batt ery until the charge is completely deplet ed; that is, use the battery until the battery status indicator starts blinking or ange. • Recharge the batt ery completely befor e using it. The batt ery is fully char ged if the battery indicator shows green when the ac power adapter is plugged in.
– F or Windows 8: Right-click the battery status icon from the Windows notication area and click P ower Options . Then click Change plan settings that is next to your power plan. • Wireless off When you ar e not using the wir eless features, such as Bluetooth or wireless LAN, turn them off.
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
Wireless W AN Wireless Wide Area Network (wireless WAN), using cellular networks for data tr ansmission, enables you to establish wireless connections over r emote public or private networks.
• If you want to use the wir eless features on an airplane, check the wir eless services with the airline before boarding the airplane. • If ther e ar e restrictions on the use of computer wireless features on an airplane, you need to disable your computer wir eless features before boar ding.
– P ower t o the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wireless connection is ex cellent. • Access Connections gauge stat es: wireless WAN – No signal – Signal level 1 – Signal level 2 – Signal level 3 Access Connections status icon The Access Connections status icon displays general connection status.
Enabling or disabling the wireless features T o enable or disable the wir eless featur es, do one of the following: • F or Windows 7: Press Fn+F5 to open the wir eless r adio switchboar d. T urn on or turn off the wireless feature as desir ed. • F or Windows 8: P ress Fn+F5 to enable or disable the Airplane mode.
Note: If your computer cannot detect the e xternal monitor , right-click on the deskt op, then select Screen resolution . Click the Detect button. Setting the monitor type T o set your monitor type, do the following: 1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the monit or connect or , and then connect the monitor t o an electrical outlet.
Using the Extend desktop function Y our computer supports a function named the Extend desktop. With the Extend desktop function, you can display output on both the computer display and an e xternal monitor . Y ou also can display different desktop images on each monitor .
Using audio featur es Y our comput er is equipped with the following: • Combo audio jack, 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) in diamet er • Built-in ster eo speakers • Built-in digital microphone Y our comput er.
Conguring camera settings Y ou can congur e the camer a settings t o meet your needs, such as adjusting the quality of the video output. T o congur e the camer a settings, do the following: • F or Windows 7: P ress Fn+F6. The Communications settings window opens.
3. Click Device Manager . If you ar e pr ompted for an administr ator password or conrmation, type the password or provide conrmation. 4. F r om the Action menu, select Add legacy hardware . The Add Har dware Wizard starts. 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen.
Chapter 3. Y ou and your computer This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and tr aveling with your computer . Accessibility and comfort Good er gonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal computer and to avoid discomfort.
Head position : Keep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In general, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .
• External mouse, if you are accustomed to using one • Ethernet cable • Extra batt ery, charged • A quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion and prot ection • External stor age device If you are tr aveling to another country, you might want to consider an ac power adapt er for the country t o which you are tr aveling.
Chapter 4. Security This chapter pr ovides information about how to pr otect your computer from theft and unauthorized use. • “ A ttaching a mechanical lock” on page 45 • “Using passwords”.
Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. Note: P ress the Backspace key if you enter a wr ong passwor d while you ar e typing your passwor d. P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password t o help pr otect your comput er against access by unauthorized users.
Note: When a master har d disk passwor d is set, only the administr ator can r emove the user hard disk password. Setting a hard disk password 1. P rint these instructions. 2. Save all open les, and exit all progr ams. 3. T urn your computer off and then on again.
Changing or removing a hard disk password F ollow steps 1 thr ough 7 in “Setting a har d disk passwor d” on page 47, typing your password to get access to the ThinkP ad Setup pr ogram.
– Enabling or disabling the W ake on LAN and Flash over LAN featur es – Enabling or disabling the Internal Network Option ROM feature – Changing date and time – Enabling or disabling the L ock.
b. Leave the Enter New P assword and Conrm New Passwor d elds blank. Pr ess Enter . Attention: Y ou might want to not e down your password and keep it in a safe place.
Notes: 1. Be sur e that the supervisor password has been set in ThinkP ad Setup. Otherwise anyone can change the settings for the security chip. 2. If you are using Client Security Solution, handle the security chip by doing the following: • Do not clear the security chip.
These oper ations, however , only change the le allocation of the data; they do not delet e the data itself. In other words, the data retrieval processing is disabled under an operating system such as Windows. The data is still there, even though it seems to be lost.
Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapt er pr ovides information about the recovery solutions. • “Recovery overview for the Windows 7 oper ating system” on page 53 • “Recovery overview for t.
Note: Y ou can creat e r ecovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. T o cr eate r ecovery media, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen.
P er forming a recovery oper ation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a recovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am. 1. F r om the Windows deskt op, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.
3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Ent er . The rescue medium starts. When the r escue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available from the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
• Use recovery media if all other methods of recovery have failed and you need t o r estore the hard disk drive to the factory default settings. See “Cr eating and using a r ecovery media” on page 53.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to install or replace hardwar e for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 61 • “Replacing the batt.
Note: If an unauthoriz ed battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the corr ect Lenovo battery for this system. ” DANGER If the r echargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, ther e is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Insert a fully char ged batt ery until it clicks into place 1 , and then slide the battery latch to the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions.
5. P ush the SIM card inward 1 , and then r elease it. The SIM car d ejects. Gently slide the SIM card out of the slot 2 . 6. Insert the SIM car d rmly into the slot.
8. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 61. 9. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. If you nd the dummy car d in the shipping cont ents, the SIM car d is already installed in the SIM card slot, and no installation is needed.
4. L oosen the screws 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the screws 1 , and then slide the har d disk drive or solid-state drive out 2 . 6. Remove the hard disk drive or solid-state drive by lifting its left side.
7. Place the new har d disk drive or solid-state drive int o the har d disk drive or solid-state drive bay . 8. Slide the hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the screws 2 . 9. A ttach the cover 1 and pivot it downwards 2 .
Replacing a PCI Express Mini Card for wir eless LAN connection Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it fr om the telephone outlet on the wall. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
5. If a tool for r emoving connect ors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d. Be sur e to attach the gr ay cable to the connector marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the black cable t o the connector marked “ AUX” or “ A. ” 9. A ttach the cover 1 and pivot it downwards 2 .
DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables before opening the cover of this slot. Attention: Before you start installing a PCI Express Half Mini Car d, touch a metal table or a gr ounded metal object.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The card pops up 2 . Remove the card. 7. Detach the metal housing fr om the PCI Express Half Mini C ard. 8. A ttach the metal housing to the new PCI Express Half Mini C ard.
9. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Half Mini Car d with the corresponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it into place. Secur e the car d with the scr ew 2 . 10. Connect the ant enna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Half Mini Car d.
12. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 61. 13. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions. Increasing memory capacity is an effective way to mak e pr ograms run fast er .
5. If two memory modules ar e alr eady in the memory slots, press out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 1 , and then r emove a memory module 2 to make r oom for the new one. Save the removed memory module for futur e use. 6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the memory module you are installing.
10. A ttach the cover 1 and pivot it downwards 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 . 11. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 61. 12. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the keyboar d Before you start, print these instructions.
4. L oosen the screws 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the scr ews that secur e the keyboar d. 6. T urn the comput er over and open the display .
7. P ush hard in the direction shown by the arrows 1 t o unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboar d. The keyboard will be detached slightly 2 . 8. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwards.
1. A ttach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwards. 2. Insert the k eyboard. Mak e sur e that the rear edge of the keyboar d is under the fr ame.
3. Slide the keyboar d in the dir ection shown by the arr ows,until the keyboar d is secured in place. 4. Reinstall the scr ews. 5. A ttach the cover 1 and pivot it downwards 2 .
6. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 61. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. Prer equisites for the procedure DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
5. Detach the connector 1 . Then r emove the backup batt ery 2 . T o install the backup batt ery, do the following: 1. Install the backup batt ery 1 . Then attach the connector 2 . 2. A ttach the cover 1 and pivot it downwards 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 .
3. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 61. 4. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables.

Chapter 7. Advanced congur ation While it is important t o pr otect les, data, and settings that ar e on the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive, you also might need to install a new oper ating system, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI BIOS, or r ecover pr einstalled softwar e.
– After installing the oper ating syst em, you should not change the initial UEFI/Legacy Boot setting in ThinkP ad Setup. The UEFI/L egacy Boot setting must be the same as it was when the Windows operating system image was installed. Otherwise, the oper ating syst em will not boot correctly .
Installing the Windows 7 x modules The Windows 7 x modules ar e in the following dir ectory: C:SWT OOL SOSFIXES The name of each subfolder is the number of a x module. F or information about each x module, go t o the Micr osoft Knowledge Base homepage at http://support.
Installing the driver for USB 3.0 on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em If your computer supports USB 3.0, and you have reinstalled the oper ating syst em, you need t o download and install the USB 3.0 driver to use the USB 3.0 by doing the following: 1.

– The battery is installed correctly . – The ac power adapt er is connected to the computer and the power cor d is plugged into a working electrical outlet. – The computer is turned on. • Problem : If your computer is a Gigabit E thernet model, it cannot connect t o the network at 1000 Mbps. Instead, it connects at 100 Mbps. Solution : – T ry another cable. – Make sur e that the link partner is set to auto-negotiate. – Make sure that the switch is 802.
UltraNav pointing device problems • Problem : The pointer drifts when the computer is turned on or after it r esumes normal oper ation. Solution : The point er might drift when you are not using the T r ackP oint pointing device during normal operation.
– If the pr oblem persists, follow the solution for the following pr oblem. • Problem : The screen is unr eadable or distort ed. Solution : Make sure that: – The display device driver is installed corr ectly . – The scr een r esolution and color quality are correctly set.
– If the ext ernal monitor supports the same r esolution as the computer display or a higher r esolution, view output on the e xternal monit or or on both the e xternal monitor and the computer display . – If the e xternal monitor supports a lower r esolution than the computer display, view output on the ext ernal monit or only .
• Problem : The screen is unr eadable or distort ed. Solution : Make sure that: – The monitor information is correct and the appropriat e monit or type is selected. Refer to the solution to the above pr oblem. – Make sure that an appr opriate refr esh r ate is selected by doing the following: 1.
Solution : If you use the Ext end desktop function, disable it, and change the display output location. If a DVD movie or a video clip is playing, stop the playback, close the pr ogram, and then change the display output location.
Solution : Use the hardwar e volume contr ol. This is because the built-in synthesiz er software does not support the control. • Problem : The sound cannot be turned off completely even if you set the Master volume contr ol at minimum. Solution : Y ou still can hear some sound even though you have set the Mast er volume control at minimum.

3. V erify the batt er y-status indicator . Refer t o “P ower status indicator” on page 8. A power button problem Problem : The system does not respond, and you cannot turn off the computer . Solution : T urn off the computer by pressing and holding the power butt on for 4 seconds or more.
– If the system status indicator (illuminat ed ThinkP ad logo) blinks slowly, your comput er is in sleep mode. Connect the ac power adapter to the computer; then press Fn. – If the system status indicator (illuminated ThinkP ad logo) is off, your computer is in power -off stat e or in hibernation mode.
A software problem Problem : A pr ogram does not run correctly . Solution : Make sur e that the pr oblem is not being caused by the pr ogram. Check that your computer has the minimum requir ed memory to run the pr ogram. Refer to the manuals supplied with the progr am.
