Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep (standby) mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that require immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .

Extension cords and r elated devices Ensure that extension cor ds, surge pr otectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are r ated to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input rating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than USB cable while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your computer . T o avoid possible damage to attached devices, wait at least ve seconds after the computer is shut down to disconnect e xternal devices.
Rechargeable battery notice DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Att empting to do so can cause an explosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied battery pack is not covered by the warranty .
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries are char ging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.

The power switch also can be progr ammed via P ower Manager to shut down the computer or put it int o sleep (standby) or hibernation mode. 5 P ower status indicator Y our computer has a power status indicator . F or the details, see “P ower status indicator” on page 10.

By default, even if your comput er is in sleep (standby) mode, the Always On USB connector still enables you to charge some devices, such as iP od ® , iPhone ® , and BlackBerry ® smartphones, by attaching the devices t o the connect or .

An indicator to the left of the connector shows the status of ac power . When the ac power adapter is connected, the indicator is on. If a battery is installed in the computer , the indicator is green when the battery char ges. DANGER T o avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect the telephone cable to the Ethernet connector .
2 SIM car d slot If your computer has a wireless WAN feature, it might r equire a SIM (Subscriber Identication Module) card to establish a wir eless WAN (Wide Area Network) connection. Depending on the country of delivery, the SIM card might be already installed in the SIM car d slot.
System status indicat ors The illuminat ed dot in the ThinkP ad logo on the outer lid of your computer and on the palm rest works as a system status indicat or: it shows whether the comput er is in sleep (standby), hibernation, or normal mode. The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Red: The computer is on (in normal mode).
P ower status indicator Y our computer has an indicat or that shows the status of ac power . The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapt er is connected. If a battery is installed on the computer , the indicator is gr een when it is charged.
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er . When you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model information helps support technicians to identify your comput er and provide faster service.
If no integr ated wireless PCI Expr ess Mini C ard is preinstalled in your comput er , you can install one. T o do this, follow the pr ocedure in “Installing and replacing the PCI Express Mini Car d.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer ” on page 21 .
Concerned about security or need to securely dispose of data stored on your hard disk drive or solid state drive? • Study the Security section to nd out how you can prot ect your comput er from theft and unauthoriz ed use. • The P assword Manager preinstalled on your comput er performs many of the security tasks that help prot ect it.
V olume and mute buttons • Fn+Esc: Speaker mute • Fn+F1: Speak er volume down • Fn+F2: Speaker volume up If you mut e the sound and then turn off your computer , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your comput er again. T o turn on the sound, press the Speaker volume up or Speaker volume down key .
Launching the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 If you press Fn+F6, the camer a and audio settings window is opened and the camer a preview is turned on. F r om this window, you can change the camera and audio settings. Note: The C amera settings area only appears if your computer has an integr ated camera.
The computer display becomes dimmer . The purpose of this method is to change the brightness level tempor arily . T o change the default brightness level, change the settings of the P ower Option in the Control P anel or use the P ower Manager . • Fn+F9 Display brightness up using Fn+F9.
Using the Ultr aNav pointing device Y our comput er might come with the UltraNav pointing device. The Ultr aNav consists of the T r ackP oint and the touch pad, each of which is itself a pointing device with both basic and ext ended functions.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and thr ee click buttons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Replacing the cap The cap 1 on the end of the T r ackP oint pointing stick is r emovable. Y ou can replace it as shown in the dr awing. Note: If you r eplace the keyboard, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one.
F or Windows 7: 1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel . 2. Click Hardwar e and Sound , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the UltraNav tab and pr oceed to customizing the t ouch pad. F or Windows XP: 1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
3. Click the Ultr aNav tab. 4. Select the check box for Show Ultr aNav icon on the system tray . 5. Click OK or Apply . F or Windows XP: 1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel . 2. Click P rinters and Other Hardware , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the Ultr aNav tab.
3. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. Tips on using the ac power adapter Y ou can check the status of your batt ery at any time by looking at the battery meter at the bott om of your display . Notes: • When the ac power adapter is not in use, disconnect it fr om the electrical outlet.
1. Right-click the P ower Manager Batt ery Gauge in the task bar . 2. Select P ower off display . • Sleep (standby in Windows XP). In sleep (standby) mode, your work is saved t o memory, and then the hard disk drive or the solid state drive and the computer display are turned off.
Note: If your computer ent ers sleep (standby) or hibernation mode when the batt ery is low, but the alarm message has not yet appeared, the message will appear when the comput er resumes. T o r esume normal operation, press OK . Handling the batt er y DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack.
DANGER Do not put the batt er y pack in trash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standar ds. DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorrectly placed.
Wireless LAN A wireless local ar ea network covers a relatively small geographic ar ea, such as an ofce building or a house. Devices based on the 802.11 standar ds can connect to this network. Wireless W AN A wireless wide ar ea network covers a broader geographic area.
Note: Befor e you start setting up wireless networking connections by using Access Connections, obtain a Network Name (SSID) and your encryption information fr om your network administrat or . Access Connections, a connectivity assistant progr am, can easily enable one network adapt er and disable the other adapters on demand.
F or Windows XP If your computer is equipped with the int egrated Bluetooth features, you can enable or disable the featur es by pr essing Fn+F5. If you press Fn+F5, a list of wir eless features is displayed. Y ou can enable or disable the Bluetooth features with a single click.
My Bluetooth Places T o use the Bluetooth featur es, do the following: 1. Double-click the My Bluetooth Places icon on the deskt op. 2. F or Windows XP , go to Bluet ooth T asks and double-click View devices in range . A list of the devices on which Bluet ooth has been enabled appears.
F or details, r efer to the help for Bluetooth. T o see the help, double-click My Bluetooth Places , and click Help and then Bluetooth help . Another way to start the help is to right-click Bluetooth Congur ation in the system tr ay of the task bar , and click Advanced Congur ation and then Help .
2. Click P erformance and Maintenance ; then click System . 3. Click the Hardware tab; then click Device Manager . 4. Double-click Bluetooth Radios t o extr act the Bluetooth Radios device tree. 5. Double-click the ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate icon to open the P roperties window .

Enabling or disabling the wireless features Pr ess Fn+F5 to bring up the wireless feature list, such as wireless LAN and Bluet ooth. Select a featur e to enable or disable it. Y ou also can enable or disable the features by the following procedur es. T o enable the wir eless featur e, do as follows: 1.

Considerations for attaching an e xternal monitor • When installing an oper ating system, you must install the display driver for your monitor that is supplied with the computer , and the Monitor INF le that is supplied with the e xternal monitor .

P asswords and sleep (standby) mode If you have set passwords and you put your computer into sleep (standby) mode , the procedur e for resuming operation is as follows: • Y ou ar e not prompted t o type the password when resuming oper ation.
Note: Y ou might want t o note your power -on password in a safe place. Otherwise, if you for get it, you have to tak e your computer to a Lenovo r eseller or a marketing r epresentative to have the password canceled. 11. P ress F10 to exit from the Setup Notice window.
8. A Setup Conrmation window opens. Y ou ar e pr ompted to select User or User + Master . Select User if you want to set only one hard disk passwor d. If you ar e an administr ator or supervisor , you can select User + Master to set two passwords. (The user can change the user password later .

Creating recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e recovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices.
3. Select the optical drive with the boot disc as the startup device and pr ess Enter . After a short delay, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4. On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your system . 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen.

F ollow the instructions on the screen t o complete the r ecovery operation. • T o perform a r ecovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows XP oper ating system, do the following: 1. • T o restor e your har d disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or t o r estore your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings, click Restore your system and follow the instructions on the screen. 3. In the Startup Device Menu window , select the desir ed optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the rescue disc into the optical drive and press Enter . The rescue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB har d disk drive, use the following instructions t o use the rescue medium: 1.
-OR- • If the subfolder for the device contains a le of setup information (a le with the ext ension .inf ), you can use the Add New Har dware progr am (in the Windows Contr ol P anel) to r einstall the device driver . Not all device drivers can be reinstalled by use of this progr am.

Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
4. Insert a fully char ged battery until it clicks into place 1 , and then slide the battery latch to the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the computer over again.
3. Remove the batt ery. F or information about how to r emove the battery, r efer to “Replacing the batt ery” on page 71. 4. L oosen the scr ews 1 that secure the solid stat e drive or hard disk drive door 2 , and then remove the solid state drive or hard disk drive door .
6. Remove the solid state drive or har d disk drive by lifting its left side. 7. Insert the new solid state drive or har d disk drive as shown in the following pictur e.
8. Slide the solid state drive or har d disk drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the screws 2 . 9. P ut the cover back in place 1 and close the cover 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 . 10. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 71 .
Replacing memory in the slot under the k eyboard 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables fr om the computer . 2. Close the computer display, and turn it over . 3. Remove the batt ery. F or information about how to r emove the battery, r efer to “Replacing the batt ery” on page 71 .
7. With the notched end of the memory module towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module 1 into the socket at an angle of about 20 degrees; then pr ess it in rmly 2 . 8. Pivot the memory module downwar d until it snaps int o place.
Replacing the keyboard Y ou can use the following pr ocedures t o replace the keyboard with a new one, available as an option. Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable t o or disconnect it from the telephone outlet on the wall.
5. Remove the scr ews. 6. P ush har d in the direction shown by the arrows 1 in the drawing to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 .
7. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwards. Now the k eyboard has been r emoved. Installing the keyboard 1. A ttach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwar ds.
2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sure that the r ear edge of the keyboard is under the fr ame, as shown by the arr ows. 3. Slide the keyboard as shown by the arrows.
4. Reinstall the scr ews. 5. P ut the cover back in place 1 and close the cover 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 . 6. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 71. 7. T urn the computer over again.

5. If a t ool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d with the corr esponding socket. Pivot the car d until you can snap it int o place 1 . Secure the card with the scr ew 2 .
10. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 71. 11. T urn the computer over again.
5. If a t ool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
6. Remove the scr ew 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Remove the car d. 7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini Car d with the corresponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secure the card with the screw 2 . Chapter 6 .
8. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Mini Car d. Note: Be sure t o attach the red cable t o the connector marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the blue cable to the connect or mark ed “ AUX” or “ A. ” 9. P ut the cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tighten the screws 3 .
If you nd the dummy card in the shipping contents, the SIM card is already installed in the SIM car d slot, and no further installation is needed. Note: The SIM card is identied by the IC chip mounted on one side of the card. Replacement instructions T o replace the SIM card, do as follows: 1.
6. Insert the new SIM card 1 rmly into the slot 2 . 7. Close the SIM card door until it snaps into position. 8. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 71 . 9. T urn the computer over again.

Chapter 8. Advanced conguration While it is important to protect les, data, and settings that ar e on the har d disk drive or on the solid state drive, you might also need to install a new oper ating syst em, install new device drivers, update your syst em UEFI, or recover pr einstalled software.
