Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep (standby) mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.

Extension cords and r elated devices Ensure that extension cor ds, surge pr otectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are r ated to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input rating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than Universal Serial Bus (USB) and 1394 cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your comput er .
The battery pack should be stored at room temperature, charged to approximat ely 30 to 50% of capacity . W e r ecommend that battery pack be char ged about once per year to prevent overdischarge. Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly r eplaced.

4 P ower switch Use the power switch t o turn on the computer . T o turn off your computer , use the S tart menu shutdown options. If you cannot turn off the computer by using this method, pr ess and hold the power switch for 2 seconds.
15 V olume contr ol buttons The built-in volume contr ol buttons enable you to quickly adjust the volume or mut e the sound from your computer . F or details, r efer to the instructions in “Volume and mute butt ons” on page 23. Right-side view Figure 2.
2 USB connector The Universal Serial Bus (USB) connect or is used for connecting USB-interface-compatible devices, such as a printer or digital camera. 3 Always On USB connector The Always On USB connect or is used for connecting devices compatible with a USB interface, such as a print er or a digital camera.

An indicator to the left of the connector shows the status of ac power . When the ac power adapt er is connected, the indicator is on. If a battery is installed in the computer , the indicator is green when the battery char ges. DANGER T o avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect the telephone cable to the Ethernet connector .
2 SIM car d slot If your computer has a wireless WAN feature, it might r equire a SIM (Subscriber Identication Module) card to establish a wir eless WAN (Wide Area Network) connection. Depending on the country of delivery, the SIM card may be already installed in the SIM car d slot.
System status indicat ors The illuminat ed dot in the ThinkP ad logo on the outer lid of your computer and on the palm rest works as a system status indicat or: it shows whether the comput er is in sleep (standby), hibernation, or normal mode. The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Red: The computer is on (in normal mode).
P ower status indicator Y our computer has an indicat or that shows the status of ac power . The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapter is connect ed. If a battery is installed on the computer , the indicator is gr een when it is charged.
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er . When you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model information helps support technicians to identify your comput er and provide faster service.
If no integr ated wireless PCI Express Mini Car d has been preinstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the pr ocedure in “Installing and replacing the PCI Expr ess Mini .

The Lenovo Solution Center progr am enables you to troubleshoot and resolve computer pr oblems. It combines diagnostic t ests, system information collection, security status, and support information, along with hints and tips for maximum syst em performance.
P assword Manager The P assword Manager program enables users to manage and remember all their sensitive and easy-to-for get application and W eb site login information, such as user IDs, passwords, and other personal information.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer ” on page 21 .
• If your comput er will be turned off for an ext ended period of time, you can prevent batt ery power from draining by using the emer gency reset hole. Look for information about the location of the emergency reset hole in “Bott om view” on page 7.
F unction k ey combinations By setting the function keys, you can change operational features instantly . T o use this function, press and hold the Fn key 1 ; then press one of the function keys 2 .
Note: If you want to use Fn+F5 t o enable or disable the wir eless features, the following device drivers must be installed on your computer beforehand: – P ower Management driver – OnScreen Display Utility – Wireless device drivers F or information on the wir eless features, r efer to “Wireless connections” on page 35.

Windows key and application k ey Windows Key If you pr ess the key 1 , the Start menu of Windows is displayed or hidden. If you press this key and another key at the same time, the System P roperties window or the Computer (in Windows XP , My Comput er) window is displayed.
• Set the T rackP oint as the main pointing device, and disable the touch pad. • Set the touch pad as the main pointing device, and disable the T rackP oint. Changing the UltraNav settings Y ou can change your settings of UltraNav in the UltraNav tab of the Mouse Pr operties window.

Using the multi-touch touch pad The touch pad of your comput er supports multi-touch with which you can zoom in, zoom out, scr oll or rotat e on the scr een while browsing the Int ernet or reading or editing a document. F or details, refer to the Help in Ultr aNav .
Adding the Ultr aNav icon to the system tr ay F or easy access t o the Ultr aNav properties, you can add the UltraNav icon to the syst em tray . T o enable the display of the UltraNav icon on the syst em tray, do as follows: F or Windows 7: 1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
Attention: Using an improper power cor d could cause severe damage to your computer . Connecting the ac power adapter T o use the ac power adapter , do the following. Be sure t o take these steps in the order in which they ar e given her e. 1. Connect the ac power adapter to the power jack of the computer .
P ower-saving modes There ar e several modes that you can use at any time t o conserve power . This section introduces each mode and gives tips on the effective use of the battery power . Introducing the power -saving modes • Screen blank. The computer display r equires considerable battery power .
Enabling the battery alarm Y ou can pr ogram your comput er so that when the battery power falls below a certain level, thr ee events occur: the alarm goes off, a message is displayed, and the L CD is turned off. Do as follows: 1. Start P ower Manager .
DANGER Only recharge the battery pack strictly accor ding to instructions included in the product documentation. DANGER Do not put the batt er y pack in trash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standar ds.
Wireless connections Wireless connection is the tr ansfer of data without the use of cables by means of r adio waves only . Depending on the frequency used for data tr ansmission, the area covered, or.
F or Windows 7: T o start the Access Connections wizard, see “ Accessing applications in Windows 7” on page 15, and follow the instructions on the scr een. F or Windows XP: T o start the Access Connections wizar d, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ ThinkV antage ➙ Access Connections , and follow the instructions on the screen.
F or details, r efer to the Windows online help. Note: If you use the wir eless featur e (the 802.11 standard) of your computer simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless featur e can be degraded.

If you did not turn the Bluet ooth power on before installing ThinkP ad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software, that is, if you skipped step 1–r eplace the Bluetooth driver , do as follows: 1. Click Start ➙ Control Panel . 2. Click P erformance and Maintenance ; then click System .
– P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wireless connection is mar ginal. – P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. The signal strength of the wireless connection is ex cellent.
Note: If you have tr ouble in making a connection, try moving your comput er closer t o your wir eless access point. Enabling or disabling the wireless feature T o enable or disable the wir eless featur e, press Fn+F5. A list of wireless features is displayed.
Attaching an e xternal monitor Y our computer can support a maximum video r esolution of up t o 2048x1536 (with an ext ernal monit or attached to the CRT connector) or up to 2560x1600 (with an external monit or attached to the HDMI port connector), provided that the external monitor also supports that resolution.
2. T urn on the ext ernal monitor . 3. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution . Note: If your computer cannot detect the e xternal monitor , click the Detect button. 4. Set Resolution . 5. Click Advanced Settings . 6. Click the Monitor tab.
Considerations for attaching an e xternal monitor • When installing an oper ating system, you must install the display driver for your monitor that is supplied with the computer , and the Monitor INF le that is supplied with the e xternal monitor .

P asswords and sleep (standby) mode If you have set passwords and you put your computer into sleep (standby) mode , the procedur e for resuming operation is as follows: • Y ou ar e not prompted t o type the password when resuming oper ation.
Note: Y ou might want t o note your power -on password in a safe place. Otherwise, if you for get it, you have to tak e your computer to a Lenovo r eseller or a marketing r epresentative to have the password canceled. 11. P ress F10 to exit from the Setup Notice window.
8. A Setup Conrmation window opens. Y ou ar e pr ompted to select User or User + Master . Select User if you want to set only one hard disk passwor d. If you ar e an administr ator or supervisor , you can select User + Master to set two passwords. (The user can change the user password later .

1. In the Enter Current Passwor d eld, type the curr ent supervisor password. 2. L eave the Enter New Passwor d and Conrm New P assword elds in blank. 3. F ollow step 11 and step 12 in “Setting a supervisor passwor d” on page 60 to r emove your supervisor password.
1. Place the ball of your nger , that is, the centr al part of the ngerprint, on the small circle above the reader . Make sure that the entire top joint of the nger is on the r eader . 2. Apply light pr essure and swipe your nger across the reader in one smooth motion.
2. Save all open les, and exit all applications. 3. T urn your computer off and then on again. 4. When the logo screen is displayed, press F1. The ThinkPad Setup opens. 5. Using the cursor keys, move t o Security , and pr ess Enter . The Security menu opens.
There are methods that seem to delete the data: • Move the data to the recycle bin, and then choose the Empty recycle bin command. • Use the Delete command. • F ormat your har d disk drive or solid stat e drive, using the softwar e for initializing it.
Lenovo provides a full version of antivirus softwar e on your computer with a fr ee 30-day subscription. After 30 days, you must r enew the license to continue receiving the antivirus software updat es. Chapter 5. Recover y overview This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. Note: Y ou can attach a USB CD or DVD drive to the USB connector .
Creating recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e recovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices.
3. Select the optical drive with the boot disc as the startup device and pr ess Enter . After a short delay, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4. On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your system . 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen.

F ollow the instructions on the screen t o complete the r ecovery operation. • T o perform a r ecovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows XP oper ating system, do the following: 1. • T o restor e your har d disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or t o r estore your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings, click Restore your system and follow the instructions on the screen. 3. On the Startup Device Menu , select the desired optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the r escue disc into the optical drive and pr ess Enter . The r escue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB har d disk drive, use the following instructions t o use the rescue medium: 1.
-OR- • If the subfolder for the device contains a le of setup information (a le with the ext ension .inf ), you can use the Add New Har dware progr am (in the Windows Contr ol P anel) to r einstall the device driver . Not all device drivers can be reinstalled by use of this progr am.

Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
4. Insert a fully char ged battery until it clicks into place 1 , and then slide the battery latch to the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the comput er over again.
3. Remove the batt ery. F or information about how to r emove the battery, r efer to “Replacing the batt ery” on page 75. 4. L oosen the scr ews 1 that secure the solid stat e drive or hard disk drive door 2 , and then remove the solid state drive or hard disk drive door .
6. Remove the solid state drive or har d disk drive by lifting its left side. 7. Insert the new solid state drive or har d disk drive as shown in the following pictur e.
8. Slide the solid state drive or har d disk drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the screws 2 . 9. P ut the cover back in place 1 and close the cover 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 . 10. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 75 .
Replacing memory in the slot under the k eyboard 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables fr om the computer . 2. Close the computer display, and turn it over . 3. Remove the batt ery. F or information about how to r emove the battery, r efer to “Replacing the batt ery” on page 75 .
7. With the notched end of the memory module towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module 1 into the socket at an angle of about 20 degrees; then pr ess it in rmly 2 . 8. Pivot the memory module downwar d until it snaps int o place.
Replacing the keyboar d Y ou can use the following pr ocedures t o replace the keyboard with a new one, available as an option. Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable t o or disconnect it from the telephone outlet on the wall.
5. Remove the scr ews. 6. P ush har d in the direction shown by the arrows 1 in the drawing to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 .
7. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwards. Now the keyboard has been r emoved. Installing the keyboard 1. A ttach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwar ds.
2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sure that the rear edge of the keyboar d is under the frame, as shown by the arr ows. 3. Slide the keyboard as shown by the arrows.
4. Reinstall the scr ews. 5. P ut the cover back in place 1 and close the cover 2 . Then tighten the scr ews 3 . 6. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 75. 7. T urn the computer over again.
Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable t o or disconnect it from the telephone outlet on the wall. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables befor e opening the cover of this slot.
5. If a t ool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d with the corr esponding socket. Pivot the car d until you can snap it int o place 1 . Secure the card with the screw 2 .
10. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 75. 11. T urn the computer over again.
5. If a t ool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
6. Remove the scr ew 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Remove the car d. 7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini Car d with the corresponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the card with the scr ew 2 . Chapter 6 .
8. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Mini Car d. Note: Be sure t o attach the red cable t o the connector marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the blue cable to the connect or mark ed “ AUX” or “ A. ” 9. P ut the cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tighten the screws 3 .
If you nd the dummy card in the shipping contents, the SIM card is already installed in the SIM car d slot, and no further installation is needed. Note: The SIM card is identied by the IC chip mounted on one side of the card. Replacement instructions T o replace the SIM card, do as follows: 1.
6. Insert the new SIM card 1 rmly into the slot 2 . 7. Close the SIM card door until it snaps into position. 8. Reinstall the batt ery . F or information about how to reinstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 75 . 9. T urn the computer over again.

Chapter 8. Advanced conguration While it is important to protect les, data, and settings that ar e on the har d disk drive or on the solid state drive, you may also need to install a new operating system, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI, or recover pr einstalled software.
