General safety guidelines Always observe the following precautions to r educe the risk of injury and property damage. Service Do not attempt to service a product yourself unless instr ucted to do so by the Customer Support Center . Use only a service provider who is appr oved to repair your particular product.
Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement. Some products ar e equipped with a three-pronged plug. This plug fits only into a gr ounded electrical outlet. This is a safety feature. Do not defeat this safety featur e by trying to insert it into a non-grounded outlet.
Chapter 1. About the Blu-ray drive This manual provides information on r egistering, installing, and using the ThinkPad ® Ultrabay ™ Blu-ray Drive, and is available on the Software and User's Guide CD . The appendixes of this guide contain warranty information and legal notices.
Installing the drive Y our ThinkPad computer includes the Access ThinkPad help system, that provides drive installation instructions specific to your computer . Locating the drive controls The following diagram shows the location of the controls on the fr ont of the drive.
Chapter 2. Using the Blu-ray drive This section provides information on how to handle, load, and car e for DVDs and CDs, and how to care for your Blu-ray drive.
Attention: Do not use for ce or insert foreign objects to open the tray . If your tray does not open when you press the Eject button, see “Manually ejecting a disc” for more information. Securing a disc in a vertically mounted drive The drive has four retainers molded into the loading tray for vertical mounting operation.
Y our drive can use many differ ent types of media. Not all media is used in the same way . The following sections describe what you can do with the differ ent media types. Using DVD-RAM media This section contains information on using DVD-RAM media in the Blu-ray drive.
Returning the disc to the cartridge To return the disc to the cartridge, align the label side of the disc 1 with the DVD-RAM cartridge label side. Insert the disc and close the cartridge lid 2 . A clicking sound will occur when the lid closed.
For more information on using the softwar e, refer to “Using DVD Movie Factory” on page 2-7. Using DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs The Blu-ray drive can write to both DVD-R and DVD-R W discs. DVD-R discs cannot be erased, but can be used with standard DVD-ROM drives and DVD players.
Note: If the software fails to install silently , you can select interactive installs of individual packages from the bottom line of the installer page. Before using the software V ideo playback requir es a compatible video device driver and IDE bus mastering in order to work.
Changing the DVD and Blu-ray region codes Commercial DVD movies ar e protected by the Content Scrambling System (CSS). Blu-Ray movies are protected by the AACS. Both these pr otections divide the world into regions for playback of differ ent discs. Content designated for one region cannot be r ead by playback systems in another region.
– V ideo disc r esizing – DVD-VR on disc editing v QuickDrop : Yo u can use this program to quickly add data or music to an existing disc. The following table lists how functions can be accessed in DVD Movie Factory 5.
Using Burn-Now to copy discs Burn-Now can also copy data, video, and audio discs. Yo u can make copies either to similar discs or to disc images saved on a hard disc or network drive. Yo u can also create discs from images that you have previously saved on your har d disc.

Appendix A. Customizing the device driver configuration settings Microsoft W indows Me and W indows 2000 Professional have two device-driver configuration parameters: Auto Insert Notify and DMA. The Auto Insert Notify parameter enables the computer to start playing or accessing the disc automatically after being inserted in the drive.
2. Select Device Manager from the Hardware tab. In W indows Me, the Hardware tab shows the Device Manager directly without clicking the button, as shown in the figur e below . 3. In the Device Manager tab, open the ’+’ for DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click on your drive, and select Properties .
To enable Digital Audio Playback in W indows Media Player , complete these steps: 1. Open W indows Media Player . 2. Select T ools > Options from the Media Player menu. 3. Click the CD Audio tab and select the Digital Playback , as shown in the figure below .

Appendix B. T roubleshooting Computer problems can be caused by har dware, software, or user err or . The information in this section might be useful to help you solve problems or to gather helpful information you can pass on to a service technician. Yo u might also need to refer to your computer , operating-system, or sound-adapter publications.
Note: Some Blu-ray video content cannot be played at full frame rate without advanced video hardware. Blu-ray video menus don't always work with the mouse . This is normal. BD-J menus are contr olled by the disc. Use the system keyboard to navigate the menu.
