Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and ensure that the power butt on is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

P ower cords and power adapt ers DANGER Use only the power cor ds and power adapters supplied by the product manufactur er . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you int end to use with your computer equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufactur er t o obtain a replacement.
General battery notice DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by L enovo contain a coin cell batt er y to provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile products, such as notebook computers, utiliz e a rechargeable battery pack t o pr ovide syst em power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The batt er y contains lithium and can e xplode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter pr ovides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer” on page 19 .
How to use the battery power mor e effectively? • T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without exiting applications or saving les, see “P ower-saving modes” on page 28. • T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, creat e and apply power plans by use of the P ower Manager progr am.
Special k eys Y our computer has sever al special keys 1 and 2 t o help you work mor e easily and effectively . The following gure shows the locations of the special keys. Y ou can t oggle the F1-F12 key functionality to use the keys in default mode or in legacy mode.
• Speaker volume down (F2) Pr ess this key t o turn down the volume of your computer . • Speaker volume up (F3) Pr ess this key t o turn up the volume of your computer . • Microphone mute (F4) Pr ess this key to mute or unmut e all of the recor ding devices.
Windows k ey Pr ess the Windows key 2 to display or hide the Start menu of the Windows operating system. F or information about using the Windows key with other keys, refer t o the help information system of the Windows operating system. Other functions • Fn+Spacebar : Enables or disables the ThinkLight light.
The T r ackP oint center butt on 3 , called the scr oll bar , enables you t o scroll W eb pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the gr aphic scr oll bars on the side of the window . Note: Y our computer k eyboard might look slightly different from the illustr ation above.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The touch pad is a pad 1 below the T rackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
Disabling the Ultr aNav pointing device and using an external mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T rackP oint pointing device and the touch pad.
Using the ac power adapter The power to run your comput er can come either fr om the lithium-ion (Li-ion) batt er y pack pr ovided with it, or fr om ac power through the ac power adapt er .
• Recharge the batt ery completely befor e using it. The battery is fully char ged if the battery indicator shows gr een. • Always use power management featur es such as power modes, screen blank, sleep, and hibernation.
Enabling the wakeup function If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the computer does not consume any power . If the wakeup function is enabled, it consumes a small amount of power .
Wireless connections Wireless connection is the transfer of data without the use of cables by means of r adio waves only . Depending on the fr equency used for data tr ansmission, the ar ea covered, o.
Access Connections, a connectivity assistant pr ogram, can easily enable one network car d and disable the other cards on demand. After setting up your wir eless networking connection, you can use the pr ogram to quickly switch the network settings.
Y ou can nd more detailed information about the signal strength and status of your wir eless connection by opening the Access Connections progr am or by right-clicking the Access Connections gauge on the taskbar and selecting View Status of Wireless Connection .
– P ower t o the wireless r adio is on. The signal strength of the wireless connection is poor . T o impr ove signal strength, move your system closer to the wireless access point.
3. Change the display output location by pr essing F6. This enables you to switch between viewing output on the e xternal monitor , the comput er monitor , and both monitors.
Changing display settings Y ou can change the display settings, such as the display resolution, font siz e, and so on. T o change the display settings, do the following: 1. Open Control P anel and click Appearance and P ersonalization . 2. Click Display for further congur ation.
5. Set the resolution for the secondary display . 6. Click OK to apply the changes. Note: T o change the color settings, right-click on the deskt op, and click Screen r esolution .
Note: The combo audio jack does not support a conventional microphone. The following table shows which functions of the audio devices attached t o the jacks on your computer ar e supported.
Note: A void using your comput er in dark conditions for prolonged periods. It is bad for your eyes. Using the optical drive Note: Y our computer only supports the MultiBurner drive.
• Do not r emove the car d while the computer is in sleep mode or hibernation mode. Otherwise, the system might not respond when you try t o resume oper ation. T o r emove a media card, do the following: 1. Click Show hidden icons on the taskbar . 2.

Display : P osition the display to maintain a comfortable viewing distance of 20-30 inches (510-760 mm). A void glare or reections on the display from overhead lighting or outside sour ces of light. Keep the display screen clean and set the brightness to levels that enable you to see the scr een clearly .
Assistive t echnologies enable users t o access information in the most appr opriate way . Some of these technologies ar e already pr ovided in your oper ating syst em. Others can be purchased through vendors, or accessed through the W orld Wide Web http://www.
• When taking off, remember to turn off your comput er or put it into hibernation mode. T r avel accessories The following is a checklist of items t o consider packing when you are going t o tr avel.
Chapter 4. Security This chapter provides information about how t o protect your comput er from theft and unauthoriz ed use. • “ A ttaching a mechanical lock” on page 45 • “Using passwords.
1. P ress F1. The icon changes to this: 2. T ype the master hard disk password. Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. If this icon is displayed, type a supervisor passwor d. Note: P ress the Backspace key if you enter a wrong password while you ar e typing your passwor d.
If a user hard disk passwor d has been set, but no master hard disk passwor d has been, the user must enter the user har d disk passwor d in order to gain access to les and applications on the hard disk drive. The master password can be set and used only by a system administrat or .
9. In the Setup Notice window that is displayed, press Ent er to continue. 10. P ress Fn+F10. The Setup Conrmation window opens. Select Y es to save congur ation changes and e xit.
• The system administr ator can use the supervisor passwor d to get access to a comput er even if the user of that computer has set a power-on password.
• T o set a password, do the following: a. In the Enter New P assword eld, type a desir ed passwor d and pr ess Enter . b. In the Conrm New Passwor d eld, r etype the passwor d and press Enter . • T o change a passwor d, do the following: a.
system and data stor ed on your computer , even if your computer is lost or st olen. BitLocker works by encrypting all user and syst em les, including the swap and hibernation les. BitLocker uses a T rusted Platform Module to provide enhanced pr otection for your data and to ensure early boot component int egrity .
2. Save all open les, and exit all applications. 3. T urn your comput er off and then turn it on again. 4. When the logo scr een is displayed, pr ess F1. The ThinkP ad Setup progr am main menu opens. 5. Using the cursor keys, move t o Security . The Security menu opens.
1. Place the ball of your nger (the centr al part of the ngerprint) on the small circle above the reader . Ensure that the entir e top joint of the nger is on the reader . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above.
• The surface of the r eader is dirty or stained. • The surface of the r eader is wet. • The r eader oft en fails to enroll or authenticate your ngerprint. If your nger has any of the following conditions, you might not be able to r egister or authenticat e it: • Y our nger is wrinkled.
Note: Running either application will take a couple of hours. Using r ewalls If your system is preinstalled with a rewall progr am, it prot ects against computer Int ernet security thr eats, unauthorized access, intrusions, and Internet attacks.

Note: Y ou can cr eate r ecovery media using discs or ext ernal USB st orage devices. T o creat e recovery media, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen.
3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup oper ation options. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een to complete the backup oper ation. P er forming a recovery operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a recovery oper ation using the OneK ey Recovery Pr o pr ogram.
3. If you have set a OneK ey Recovery P ro password, type your passwor d when prompted. The OneKey Recovery P ro workspace opens aft er a short delay . Note: If the OneKey Recovery P ro workspace fails t o open, see “Solving r ecovery problems” on page 62.
• If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB har d disk drive, use the following instructions to use the rescue medium: 1. Attach the USB hard disk drive t o one of the USB connectors on your comput er . 2. Repeatedly pr ess and release the F12 key when turning on the computer .
Solving recovery problems If you ar e unable to access the OneKey Recovery P ro workspace or the Windows environment, do one of the following: • Use a rescue medium t o start the OneK ey Recovery P ro workspace. See “Cr eating and using a rescue medium” on page 60.
Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your comput er . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 63 • “Disabling the bu.
Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions. Y our computer might requir e a SIM car d to establish wir eless WAN connections. Depending on the country of delivery, you might nee.
5. Hold the new car d with the metal contact facing downwards. Then, insert the car d rmly int o the slot until you hear a click. 6. Close the SIM card door until it snaps into position. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables.
• Before removing the har d disk drive or solid state drive, make a backup copy of all the information on it, and then turn the computer off. • Never remove the hard disk drive or solid state drive while the comput er is operating, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode.
5. Insert the hard disk drive or solid state drive into the slot and slide the hard disk drive or solid state drive rmly into place. 6. Reinstall the har d disk drive or solid state drive door 1 . Then tighten the scr ew 2 . 7. T urn the comput er over again.
T o r emove the keyboar d, do the following: 1. Disable the built-in battery . See “Disabling the built-in battery” on page 63. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the comput er over . 3. Remove the two scr ews that secur e the keyboard at the bottom.
6. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwards. Remove the keyboard. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. T o install the keyboar d, do the following: 1. Attach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwards.
2. Insert the keyboar d. Ensure that the rear edge of the keyboard is under the frame. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. 3. Slide the keyboard into place in the direction shown by the arr ows. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above.
4. Close the computer display and turn the computer over . Reinstall the two screws at the bott om. 5. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the optical drive Before you start, print these instructions.
5. P ress the edge of the optical drive outwar ds using the tip of a thin screwdriver as shown, and pull out the optical drive. T o install a new optical drive, do the following: 1. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay, and then pr ess it rmly into the connector .
2. Tighten the scr ew that secur es the optical drive. 3. Reinstall the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboard” on page 67. 4. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions.
4. If the memory module already is in the memory slot, pr ess out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 1 , and then remove the memory module 2 . Save the removed memory module for future use. 5. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the memory module you are installing.
9. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing a Mini PCI ExpressCard for wireless LAN connection Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it fr om the telephone outlet on the wall.
5. Remove the screw 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Remove the car d. 6. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket 1 .
7. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard as shown in the drawing. Be sur e to attach the gr ay cable t o the connect or marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the black cable to the connector marked “ AUX” or “ A ”.
4. If a tool for removing connect ors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
6. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it into place. Secure the car d with the screw 2 . 7. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard as shown in the drawing.
5. If a tool for removing connect ors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
8. Insert the new card into the br acket. 9. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it into place. Secure the car d with the screw 2 . 10. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard as shown in the drawing.
11. Reinstall the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboard” on page 67. 12. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Detach the connector 1 . Then r emove the backup batt ery 2 . 5. Install the new backup batt er y 1 . Then attach the connect or 2 . 6. Reinstall the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboard” on page 67. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables.

T o install a x module, run the EXE le in a subfolder and follow the instructions on the scr een. Note: If you remove the har d disk drive fr om the computer with a single-cor e pr ocessor and install it on a computer with a dual-core processor , you can get access t o the hard disk drive.
