1 Using PC-Doctor - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Diagnosing problems If you have a problem with your computer , you can test it by using PC-Doctor ® for W indows.
2 Diagnosing problems using PC-Doctor from the service par tition By using PC-Doctor fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace in the service partition of the hard dis k dr ive, you can diagnose your syst em without startin g up the operating syst em.
3 Using Rescue and Reco very - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Introducing Rescue and Recovery If W indows is not running pr operly , use the Rescue and Recovery workspace to help solve or identify your pr oblem.
4 The Product Recovery Program contained within this area enables you to restore the complete contents of yo ur hard disk to the same state as it was when originally shi pped from the factory .
5 Before restoring the system, initialize the settings of the BIOS Setup Uti lity: 1 Enter BIOS Setup Utility . 2 Press F9 to r estore the default system settings. Select Ye s and press Enter . 3 Press F10 to save the system s ettings. Select Ye s and press Enter .
6 3 Restart the computer . Aft er a short wait, th e Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4 Click Full Restore and follow the instructions on the scr een.
7 Y ou can use either the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram or the Rescue and Recovery workspace to restor e the contents of the hard disk to an earlier state using any of the stored backups. The Rescue and Recovery workspace runs independent ly of the W indows operating system.

9 T o replace t he batt er y 1 T urn off the computer , or enter hibern ation mode. Th en disconnect the AC adapter and all cables from the compu ter . Note: If you are us ing a PC Card, th e compute r might no t be able to enter hibernation mo de. If this happens, tu rn off the computer .
10 4 Install a fully char ged battery . 5 Slide the manual battery latch to the locked pos ition. 6 T urn the computer over again. Conne ct the AC adapter and the cables to the computer again. Upgrading the har d disk drive Y ou can increase the storage capacity of your computer by replacing the hard disk dr ive with one of greater capa city .
11 The drive is very s ensitive. Incorrect h andling can cause da mage and permanent loss of data on the hard di sk. Before r emoving the har d disk drive, make a backup copy of all the information on the har d disk, and then turn the computer of f. Never remove the drive while the system is operating, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode.

13 7 T ake out the hard disk drive secur ed in a metal frame. 8 Remove the scr ews and detach the metal frame from th e hard disk drive. 9 Attach the meta l frame to a new hard disk driv e; then tighten the screws.
14 Removing the optical drive T o remove the optical drive , do the following: 1 Remove the screw shown in the figure . 2 Gently pull the optical drive out . Importan t: Read Chapter 6. “Safet y , use, and Car e Information” in User Guide before r emoving the optical drive.
15 Replacing memory Increasing m emory capacity is an ef fective way to make programs r u n faster . Y ou can increas e the amount of memory in your computer by installing a double data rate (DDR).
16 4 Remove the battery . 5 Remove the thermal slot cover . a. Remove the screws that s ecure the thermal slo t cover . b. Remove the thermal slot cover . 6 If two SO-DIMMs are alr eady installed in the memory slot, r emove one of them to make room for the new one by pressing out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time.
17 7 Insert the notched en d of the DIMM into the socket. Press the DIMM firmly , and pivot it until it snaps into the place. Make sure that it is fir mly fixed in the slot and does not move easily . 8 Reinstall the therma l slot cover . 9 Reinstall the battery .
18 Note: If only one DIMM is used on the computer you ar e servicing, the card must be installed in SLOT -0 ( : lower slot ), but not in SLOT -1 ( : upper slot). T o make sure that the SO-DIMM is installed corr ectly , do as follows: 1 T urn the computer on.
