Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Although ther e ar e no moving parts in your computer after the power cor d has been disconnect ed, the following warnings are r equired for your safety .
Extension cords and relat ed devices Ensure that e xtension cor ds, surge prot ectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are rat ed to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input r ating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any e xternal device cables other than USB and 1394 cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your computer . T o avoid possible damage to attached devices, wait at least ve seconds after the computer is shut down to disconnect external devices.
The battery pack should be stored at r oom temperature, charged t o approximately 30 t o 50% of capacity . We r ecommend that battery pack be charged about once per year to prevent overdischarge. Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer” on page 21 .

Special k eys and buttons Y our comput er has sever al special keys and buttons t o help you work mor e easily and effectively . Y ou can toggle the ThinkP ad F1-F12 key functionality to use the keys in default mode or in legacy mode.
V olume and mut e k eys T o quickly adjust the volume of the sound fr om your comput er , mute the sound entir ely, or set the microphone to mute, pr ess one of the following keys.
Multimedia controls F10 : P revious tr ack/scene F11 : Play or pause F12 : Ne xt tr ack/scene Other functions Fn + B : Has the same function as the Break key . Fn + P : Has the same function as the P ause key . Fn + S : Has the same function as the SysRq key .
Speaker volume up (F3) If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again. T o turn on the sound, pr ess the Speak er volume up or Speak er volume down key . Microphone mute (F4) Pr ess the micr ophone mut e key t o mut e or unmute all of the r ecording devices.

Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboar d and three click butt ons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The touch pad is a pad 1 below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the k eyboard.
Disabling the Ultr aNav pointing device and using an external mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T r ackP oint pointing device and the touch pad. Disabling the T r ackPoint or the touch pad T o disable the T rackP oint or the touch pad, do the following: 1.
• The way you use your computer: how often you access the hard disk drive; how bright you make the computer display . T o check for detailed battery status information, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Open the P ower Manager pr ogram and click the Battery tab.
Note: T o incr ease the life of the battery, the comput er does not start r echarging the batt ery if the r emaining power is great er than 95%. Maximizing the battery life T o maximiz e the life of t.
– F or Windows 8: Open the L enovo Settings pr ogram and click Power . • Hibernation By using this mode, you can turn off your comput er complet ely without saving les or e xiting fr om any progr ams that are running.
Handling the battery This syst em supports only batt eries specially designed for this specic system and manufactured by L enovo or an authorized builder . The system does not support unauthoriz ed batteries or batt eries designed for other systems.
DANGER Only r echarge the battery pack strictly according to instructions included in the pr oduct documentation. DANGER Do not put the battery pack in tr ash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standards.
Depending on the wir eless device used in your computer , you might be able t o connect to the following categories of wir eless networks. Wireless LAN A wir eless local area network (LAN) covers a relatively small geogr aphic area, such as an ofce building or a house.
1. P ress F9 t o turn on the wireless feature. 2. Click the wir eless network connection status icon in the Windows notication area. A list of available wireless networks is displayed. 3. Double-click a network to connect t o it. Pr ovide r equired information if needed.
Access Connections gauge On the Windows 7 oper ating system, the Access Connections gauge in the Windows notication area displays the status and signal strength of your wir eless connection.
– P ower to the wireless radio is on. No association. – P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. No signal. – P ower to the wir eless radio is on. The signal strength of the wireless connection is e xcellent. – P ower to the wir eless r adio is on.
Attaching an external monitor Y our computer can support a maximum video resolution of up t o 2048x1536, provided that the e xternal monitor also supports that resolution. F or mor e details, refer to the manuals provided with your monitor . Y ou can set any resolution for either the comput er display or the e xternal monitor .
16. F or the Windows 7 oper ating system, to change the color settings, right-click on the deskt op, and click Screen resolution . Click Advanced Settings , select the Monitor tab, then set Colors .
3. P ress F6, then select Extend . T o change the resolution for each monitor , do the following: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution . 2. Click the Monitor-1 icon (for the primary display, the comput er display). 3. Set the resolution for the primary display .
Using the integr ated camer a If your computer has an integr ated camer a, you can use the camer a to preview your video image and take a snapshot of your curr ent image. T o start the camer a, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Pr ess F5 t o open the Communications settings window .

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and tr avelling with your computer . Accessibility and comfort Good er gonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal computer and to avoid discomfort.
Head position : Keep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In general, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .
• External mouse, if you are accustomed to using one • Ethernet cable • Extra batt ery, charged • A quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion and prot ection • External stor age device If you are tr aveling to another country, you might want to consider an ac power adapt er for the country t o which you are tr avelling.
Chapter 4. Security This chapter pr ovides information about how to pr otect your computer from theft and unauthorized use. • “ A ttaching a mechanical lock” on page 49 • “Using passwords”.

P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password t o help pr otect your comput er against access by unauthorized users.

Note: When a master har d disk passwor d is set, only the administr ator can r emove the user hard disk password.
The next time you turn on your comput er , you will have to type the user or master hard disk passwor d in order to start your computer and get access to your oper ating syst em.

Maintaining the ngerprint r eader The following actions could damage the ngerprint reader or cause it not t o work properly: • Scratching the surface of the r eader with a har d, pointed object. • Scraping the surface of the reader with your ngernail or anything har d.

P er forming a recovery oper ation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a recovery operation using the OneK ey Recovery Pr o pr ogram. 1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.
3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and press Ent er . The rescue medium starts. When the r escue medium starts, the OneKey Recovery P ro workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available from the OneKey Recovery Pr o workspace.
• Use recovery media if all other methods of recovery have failed and you need t o r estore the hard disk drive to the factory default settings. See “Cr eating and using a r ecovery media” on page 59.

4. Insert a fully charged batt ery until it clicks into place 1 , and then slide the batt ery latch to the lock ed position 2 . 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions.
5. Hold the new card with the metal contact facing upwar d and going into the slot rst. Then, insert the car d rmly int o the slot until you hear a click. 6. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 7. T urn the computer over again.
T o r eplace the har d disk drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables fr om the comput er . W ait three to ve minutes to let the comput er cool. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over .
6. Remove the hard disk drive by lifting the tab. 7. Place the new har d disk drive into the hard disk drive bay . 8. Slide the har d disk drive rmly into the connect or 1 , and then reinstall the screws 2 .
9. Reinstall the comput er cover 1 . Then tighten the screws 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 11. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the optical drive ThinkP ad Edge E430, E430c, and E435 Before you start, print these instructions.
5. Remove the scr ew. 6. P ull out the optical drive. T o install a repair ed optical drive or a new one, do the following: 1. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay, and then pr ess it rmly into the connector .
2. Reinstall the scr ew. 3. Reinstall the comput er cover 1 . Then tighten the screws 2 . 4. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 5. T urn the computer over again. 4. L oosen the screw that secures the optical drive and remove it. 5. P ull out the optical drive. T o install a repair ed optical drive or a new one, do the following: 1. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay, and then pr ess it rmly into the connector .
2. Reinstall the screw and tight en it. 3. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 4. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing a PCI Express Mini Card for wir eless LAN connection Before you start, print these instructions.
4. L oosen the scr ews 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. If a tool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card with the corresponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the car d with the scr ew 2 . 8. Connect the ant enna cables to the new PCI Express Mini Car d as shown in the dr awing.
Replacing a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless W AN connection Before you start, print these instructions. Prer equisites for replacing or installing the wireless WAN card DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it fr om the telephone outlet on the wall.
5. If a tool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
8. Connect the ant enna cables to the new PCI Express Mini Car d as shown in the dr awing. 9. Reinstall the comput er cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ew 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 11. T urn the computer over again.
4. L oosen the scr ew 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. If a tool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. P ull the PCI Expr ess Half Mini Card out of the metal housing. 8. Insert the new PCI Expr ess Half Mini C ard into the metal housing. 9. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Half Mini Car d with the corresponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it into place.
10. Connect the ant enna cables to the new PCI Express Mini Car d as shown in the dr awing. 11. Reinstall the comput er cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ew 2 . 12. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 67. 13. T urn the computer over again.

7. With the notched end of the memory module t oward the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module into the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees 1 ; then pr ess it in rmly 2 . Note: If you install a memory module in only one of the two memory slots, install it in the bottom slot.
DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it fr om the telephone outlet on the wall. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables before opening the cover of this slot.

8. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connectors 1 and 3 upwar ds. Remove the keyboar d 5 . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above. Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1.

Prer equisites for the procedure DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. The backup battery contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.

Chapter 7. Advanced congur ation While it is important t o pr otect les, data, and settings that ar e on the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive, you also might need to install a new oper ating system, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI BIOS, or r ecover pr einstalled softwar e.
