Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ress it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .

P ower cor ds and power adapt ers DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a r eceptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your computer equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
General battery notices DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by Lenovo contain a coin cell battery t o provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile pr oducts, such as notebook computers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack to provide system power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly r eplaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The batt er y contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries are char ging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
DANGER Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser r adiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid dir ect e xposure to the beam.

3 Built-in microphone The built-in microphone captur es sound and voice when it is used with an application progr am capable of handling audio. 5 Power switch Use the power switch t o turn on the computer . T o turn off your computer , use the Start menu shutdown option.

2 Integrat ed camera Y our computer might have an int egrated camer a. By using this camer a, you can take pictures or hold a video confer ence. F or mor e information about how to use the camer a, r efer to “Using an integr ated camera” on page 45.
Y our computer comes with the UltraNav pointing device. The UltraNav pointing device consists of the T rackP oint pointing device and the touch pad. With the T r ackP oint pointing device, pointing, selecting, and dragging are all part of a single pr ocess that you can perform without moving your ngers fr om a typing position.
By default, even if your computer is in sleep mode, the Always On USB connector still enables you t o charge some devices, such as iP od ® , iPhone ® , and BlackBerry ® smartphones, by attaching the devices to the connector .

3 Hard disk drive Y our comput er might have a lar ge-capacity, customer-upgr adable har d disk drive that can meet a variety of stor age demands. T o keep the drive safe, the Active P rotection Syst em ™ progr am is installed on your computer . F or details, refer to “ Active Pr otection System” on page 21.

System status indicators Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. The illuminat ed dot in the ThinkP ad logo on the outer lid of your computer and on the palm rest works as a system status indicator: it shows whether the computer is in sleep, hibernation, or normal mode.
P ower status indicator Y our computer has an indicat or that shows the status of ac power . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapt er is connected.
Y ou can nd the machine type and model of your computer in the label as shown below: FCC ID and IC Certication number label There is no FCC ID or IC Certication number for the PCI Express Mini Car d shown on the enclosure of your computer .
If no integr ated wireless PCI Express Mini Car d has been preinstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the procedur e in “Replacing a PCI Express Mini C ard for wir eless LAN connection” on page 78.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer ” on page 25 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans by use of P ower Manager. • If your computer will be turned off for an ext ended period of time, you can pr event battery power from dr aining by r emoving the battery .
T o t oggle the F1-F12 key functionality on the Windows 7 operating system, do either of the following: • F rom Control Panel: 1. Click S tart ➙ Contr ol P anel . 2. In the icons view , click K eyboard and the Keyboar d Pr operties window is displayed.
Microphone mute (F4) Pr ess the microphone mute key to mute or unmute all of the r ecording devices. Launching the camer a and audio settings (F5) If you press F5, the camer a and audio settings window is opened and the camer a preview is turned on. F rom this window , you can change the camera and audio settings.
Note: Though your k eyboard comes with a ThinkLight icon on the space key, the ThinkLight light function is not available on ThinkP ad E425 models. Thinkpad Edge E525 special k eys Y our computer has sever al special keys 1 , 2 , 3 , and 4 . T o take advantage of each function, dir ectly press the desir ed key .
If you press F5, the camer a and audio settings window is opened and the camer a preview is turned on. F rom this window , you can change the camera and audio settings. Note: If you r eplace the keyboard, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The t ouch pad consists of a pad 1 and two click buttons below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel . 2. Click Hardware and Sound , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the UltraNav tab and pr oceed to customiz e the touch pad.
Checking battery status The P ower Manager batt ery gauge on the taskbar displays the percentage of batt ery power r emaining. The r ate at which you use batt ery power will determine how long you can use the batt er y of your comput er between char ges.
The battery status indicator will let you know that the batt ery is charging, and will also notify you when the battery is fully char ged. Note: T o incr ease the life of the batt ery, the computer does not start rechar ging the batt ery if the remaining power is great er than 95%.
When you are not using the wireless featur es, such as Bluet ooth or wir eless LAN, turn them off. This will help conserve power . T o turn off the wir eless features, press F9 .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
Connecting to the network Y our comput er has one or mor e network car ds for connecting t o the Int ernet and to your company's wired LAN or wireless LAN network. Access Connections is a connectivity assistant pr ogram for creating and managing location proles.
Tips for using the wireless LAN feature • Place your computer so that ther e are as few obstacles as possible between the wir eless LAN access point and the comput er . • F or the best connection of the wireless LAN feature, open your comput er display to an angle of slightly more than 90 degrees.
Access Connections gauge stat es: wireless LAN • P ower to the wireless r adio is off or no signal. • P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wir eless connection is poor . T o improve signal strength, move your system closer to the wireless access point.
T o enable the wir eless featur e, do the following: 1. Click the Access Connections wir eless status icon in the Windows notication area. 2. Click P ower On Wireless Radio . T o disable the wir eless featur e, do as follows: 1. Click the Access Connections wir eless status icon in the Windows notication area.
Note: If your computer cannot detect the ext ernal monitor , right-click on the desktop, then select Screen resolution . Click the Det ect button. Setting the monitor types T o set your monitor type, do the following: 1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the monit or connector , and then connect the monit or to an electrical outlet.
Using the Extend desktop function Y our computer supports a function named the Extend desktop. With the Extend deskt op function, you can display output on both the computer display and an e xternal monitor . Y ou can also display differ ent desktop images on each monit or .

Using the optical drive Note: Y our computer only supports the MultiBurner drive. MultiBurner drive This drive can r ead DVD-ROM discs, DVD-R discs, DVD-RAM discs, DVD-RW discs, and all types of CDs, such as CD-ROM discs, CD-RW discs, CD-R discs, and audio CDs.
Removing a ash media card T o remove a ash media car d, do the following: 1. Click Show hidden icons on the taskbar . 2. Right-click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon. 3. Select the corresponding it em to eject the car d from the Windows oper ating system.

T yping passwords If this icon is displayed, type a power -on password or a supervisor passwor d. If this icon is displayed, type a user har d disk passwor d. If you want to type a master hard disk password, do the following: 1. Pr ess F1. The icon changes to this: 2.

Attention: Y ou might want to note your passwords and keep them in a safe place. Otherwise, if you forget the user password, or both user and mast er passwords, Lenovo cannot r eset your passwords or recover data from the har d disk drive.
• If a supervisor passwor d is set, a password prompt appears when you try to start the ThinkP ad Setup progr am. Unauthoriz ed users cannot get access to congur ation data. • The system administr ator can use the supervisor password t o get access to a computer even if the user of that computer has set a power -on password.
• T o change a password, do the following: a. In the Enter Current P assword eld, type the curr ent supervisor password. b. In the Enter New Passwor d eld, type the new supervisor password; then retype the passwor d you just enter ed to verify it in the Conrm New Password eld.
3. F ollow the instructions on the scr een to enroll your ngerprint. F or details, refer to the help information system for the progr am. Swiping your nger over the reader T o swipe your nger over the reader , do the following: 1. Place the ball of your nger (the centr al part of the ngerprint) on the small cir cle above the reader .
If you notice any of the following conditions, gently clean the surface of the r eader with a dry, soft, lint-fr ee cloth: • The surface of the reader is dirty or stained. • The surface of the r eader is wet. • The reader oft en fails t o enroll or authenticate your ngerprint.
F or disposing of data on the har d disk drive, Lenovo provides the Secure Data Disposal tool. T o download the application, go to: http://www.lenovo.com/support Note: Running the application will take a couple of hours.

P erforming a backup oper ation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am. T o perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram, do the following: 1.
1. Make sure the comput er is turned off. 2. Repeatedly pr ess and release the F11 key when turning on the computer . When you hear beeps or see a logo screen, release the F11 key . 3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery password, type your password when prompted.
1. T urn off your comput er . 2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the S tartup Device Menu opens, release the F12 key . 3. On the S tartup Device Menu , select the desired optical drive as the rst boot device.
• If the subfolder for the device contains a le of setup information (a le with the ext ension .inf ), you can use the Add New Har dware progr am (in the Windows Contr ol P anel) to r einstall the device driver . Not all device drivers can be reinstalled by use of this progr am.
Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can increase the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by r eplacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. Or , if you need t o, you can replace the PCI Expr ess Mini Card by following the pr ocedures in this chapter .
Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
4. Insert a fully char ged battery until it clicks into place 1 , and then slide the battery latch to the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables t o the computer . Replacing the har d disk drive Before you start, print these instructions.
3. Remove the battery . F or more information about how t o remove the battery, r efer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69. 4. Loosen the screws 1 , and then remove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the screws 1 , and then slide the har d disk drive 2 out.
6. Remove the har d disk drive by lifting the tab. 7. Place the new hard disk drive into the har d disk drive bay . 8. Slide the hard disk drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the scr ews 2 .
9. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ews 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69 . 11. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables t o the computer .

1. Insert the drive in the bay, and then pr ess it rmly to the connector . 2. Reinstall the scr ew 1 , and tighten it 2 . 3. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69.
DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables befor e opening the cover of this slot. Attention: Befor e you start installing a PCI Express Mini Car d, touch a metal table or a gr ounded metal object.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Remove the car d. 7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d with the corresponding sock et 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the card with the scr ew 2 . 8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Express Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing.
9. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ews 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69 . 11. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and cables to the comput er; then turn it on.
4. Loosen the screws 1 , and then remove the cover 2 . 5. If the two memory modules are alr eady in the memory slots, pr ess out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 1 , and then r emove a memory module 2 t o make room for the new one.
7. With the notched end of the memory module towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module 1 into the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees; then pr ess it in rmly 2 . Note: If you install a memory module in only one of the two memory slots, install it in the bottom slot.
Replacing the keyboar d Before you start, print these instructions. Y ou can use the following pr ocedures t o replace the keyboard with a new one, available as an option. Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable t o or disconnect it from the telephone outlet on the wall.
5. Remove the screws 1 and 2 . 6. Push hard in the dir ection shown by the arr ows 1 in the dr awing t o unlatch the front side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 .
7. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwar ds. Now the keyboard has been r emoved. Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. Attach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwards.
2. Insert the keyboard. Make sure that the r ear edge of the keyboard is under the fr ame, as shown by the arr ows. 3. Slide the keyboar d as shown by the arrows.
5. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ews 2 . 6. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69 . 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and cables to the comput er; then turn it on.
5. Remove the screws 1 and 2 . 6. Push hard in the dir ection shown by the arr ows 1 in the dr awing t o unlatch the front side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 .
7. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwar ds. Now the keyboard has been r emoved. Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. Attach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwards.
2. Insert the keyboard. Make sure that the r ear edge of the keyboard is under the fr ame, as shown by the arr ows. 3. Slide the keyboar d as shown by the arrows.
4. Reinstall the screws 1 and 2 . 5. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ews 2 . 6. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 69. 7. T urn the comput er over again.
Chapter 7. Advanced conguration While it is important to prot ect les, data, and settings that are on the hard disk drive, you might also need to install a new oper ating syst em, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI BIOS, or recover pr einstalled software.

The following is an e xample of the ThinkP ad Setup progr am main menu. 4. Using the cursor keys, move to an it em you want to change. When the it em you want is highlighted, press Enter . A submenu is displayed. 5. Change the items you wish t o change.
• Keyboar d/Mouse : Set the keyboard and the mouse related functions. • Display : Specify the settings for display output. • P ower : Set power management r elated functions. • Beep and Alarm : Enable or disable the audio related functions. • Serial A T A (SA T A) : Specify the settings for the har d disk drive.
Note: Hard Disk 1 means the hard disk drive built int o your computer . The L ock UEFI BIOS Settings option enables or disables the function that protects items in the ThinkP ad Setup progr am from being changed by a user who does not have the supervisor passwor d.

Solution : The EEPROM checksum is not corr ect (block # 4 and 5). The syst em boar d should be r eplaced, and the UUID needs to be reinstalled. Have the computer serviced. • Message : 0190: Critical low-battery error . Solution : The comput er turns off, because the battery is low.
• Message : 0251: System CMOS checksum bad. Solution : The syst em CMOS might have been corrupted by an application progr am. The computer uses the default settings. Run ThinkP ad Setup to recongur e the settings. If you still see the same err or code, have the computer serviced.
• Message : 2110: Read error on HDD0 (Main HDD). Solution : The har d disk drive is not working. Have the har d disk drive serviced. • Message : The power-on password pr ompt Solution : A power -on password or a supervisor password is set. T ype the password and pr ess Enter to use the computer (refer to “Using passwor ds” on page 53).

Solution : Windows 7 operating syst em sends PIM items in XML format, but most Bluet ooth-enabled devices handle PIM items in vC ard format.
Solution : Do the following: – Pr ess F6 to bring up the image. – If you are using the ac power adapter , or using the battery and the P ower Manager battery gauge shows that the battery is not depleted, press F8 to make the scr een brighter . – If your comput er is in sleep mode, pr ess Fn to resume fr om the sleep mode.

Solution : The control is designed to compensate for minor differ ences in balance and does not completely mute either channel. • Problem : There is no volume control for MIDI sound in the V olume Mix er window . Solution : Use the hardwar e volume contr ol.
If a quick charger is available, use it t o charge the over -discharged battery pack. If the batt ery pack cannot be fully char ged in 24 hours, use a new battery pack. Problem: Y our comput er shuts down before the battery status indicator shows empty, or your computer operat es after the battery status indicator shows empty .

If the battery is charged and the temper ature is within r ange, have the computer serviced. • Problem : The message “ critical low-battery err or ” is displayed, and the computer immediately turns off. Solution : The batt ery power is getting low .
Problem: The hard disk drive does not work. Solution : On the startup menu of ThinkP ad Setup, make sur e that the hard disk drive is on the “Boot priority order” list. If it is on the “Excluded from boot or der ” list, it is disabled. Select the entry for it on the list and press the Shift+1 key .
• Problem : WinDVD8 has an HD DVD tab, but I cannot use it. Solution : Y our computer does not support an HD DVD drive. Software problems Problem: An application does not run correctly . Solution : Make sur e that the pr oblem is not being caused by the application.
