Starting PC-Doctor from a diagnostic diskette or CD-ROM Note: If your computer has no internal diskette drive, an external USB diskette drive is requir ed when using the diagnostic diskette. 1. If your computer is already on when you start this procedur e, shut down the operating system and turn off the computer .
T est selection To select one or more tests, use the following procedur e. 1. Open the corresponding test category . 2. Using the cursor movement keys, highlight the desired test. 3. Press the space bar . A selected test is marked by >> . Pressing the space bar again de-selects a test and removes the >>.
available for test, what tests are available for the device, device pr operties, and so on. To change testing parameters, you modify the FDA T .INI file in PC Doctor for DOS. FDA T consists of the following subtests and features. Fixed-Disk T ests: v Seek T ests: - checks the physical operation of the drive head.
channel buffer must be kept high in or der to maintain a speed advantage over other data transfer modes. In order to use the UDMA channel during testing, users must disable the multitasking feature. Destructive versus non-destructive testing: Most of the tests found in FDA T are non-destructive.
The Full Erase Hard Drive pr ovides a DOS utility that performs the following: v Performs all the steps in Quick Erase. v Provides a DOS utility that writes random data to all sectors of the hard drive. v Provides an estimate of time to completion along with a visual repr esentation of completion status.
Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility program is stor ed in the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) of the computer . The Setup Utility program is used to view and change the configuration settings of the computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using.
Password considerations If you are setting any of the various types of passwor ds on your computer , you should read and understand the following information: v If you type an incorrect password, you will see an err or message. If you type an incorrect passwor d three consecutive times, you must turn the computer off and start again.
Attention Make sure that the IDE Drive Master passwor d is stored in a safe place. If both the IDE Drive User password and the IDE Drive Master passwor d are lost or forgotten, the IDE har d disk drive must be replaced.
Selecting a startup device If the computer does not start up (boot) from a device such as the CD-ROM, diskette, or hard disk as expected, use one of the following pr ocedures to select a startup device. Selecting a temporary startup device Use this procedur e to startup from any boot device.

2. Open the adapter-slot-latch securing the adapter and remove the failing adapter . 3. Remove the new adapter from its static-protective package. 4. Install the new adapter into the appropriate slot on the system board and secure the adapter with the adapter -slot-latch.
Removing and replacing the battery 1. Remove the cover . See “Removing the cover” on page 121. 2. Locate the battery . See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 124. 3. If necessary , remove any adapters that impede access to the battery .
6. Install the new power supply and insert the four screws that hold the power supply in place. 7. Reconnect all power supply cables to the system board and the drives. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 124. 8. Go to “Closing the cover and connecting cables” on page 133.
7. T ake note of the location of the DIMMs and remove them fr om the failing system board and install them on the new system boar d in the same location as they were on the failing system boar d. See “Removing and replacing memory” on page 125. 8.
4. Loosen the two captured screws 3 holding the fan and heat sink in place, and pivot them to the side. 5. To remove the fan and heat sink 1 from the micr oprocessor 2 , gently twist the fan and heat sink to break the seal formed by the thermal gr ease and remove.
13. Use the thermal grease syringe to place 16 uniformly spaced dots of 0.01ML each on the top of the micropr ocessor . Microprocessor 0.01 mL of thermal grease 14. Place the fan and heat sink into position on the microprocessor . 15. When tightening the screws that clamp the heat sink, do not overtighten.
5. For all drives except the hard disk drive, push in on the metal tab that secures the drive being removed. The har d disk drive tray pivots out toward the front of the computer for removal of the har d disk drive. See the following illustrations. For the hard disk drive, see the illustration below .
10. For bay 5 (hard disk drive), pivot the drive cage to the closed position. 11 . If the front bezel was removed, r eplace it by aligning and pressing the bezel into position.
