Chapter 2. Y ou and your comput er This chapt er pr ovides information about accessibility, comfort, and relocating your computer t o other countries or regions. Accessibility and comfort Good ergonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal comput er and to avoid discomfort.
Adjust the monitor so the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches), and position it so you can view it without having t o twist your body . Also, position other equipment you use r egularly, such as the t elephone or a mouse, within easy r each.
Register your comput er with L enovo T o regist er your computer , go t o http://www.lenovo.com/r egister. Then, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the registr ation. This can help authorities return your computer to you if it is lost or stolen.

Chapter 3. Security This chapt er pr ovides information about how to pr otect your comput er fr om theft and unauthoriz ed use. Security features The following security featur es are available on your.
Locking the comput er cover Locking the comput er cover helps pr event unauthorized people fr om gaining access to the inside of your computer . Y our computer comes with a padlock loop so that the comput er cover cannot be r emoved when a padlock is installed.
Attaching an integrat ed cable lock An int egrat ed cable lock, sometimes referr ed t o as the Kensingt on lock, can be used to secur e your computer t o a desk, table, or other non-permanent xtur e. The cable lock attaches to the integr ated cable lock slot at the r ear of your computer and is oper ated with a key .
• Administrat or P assword: Setting an Administr ator P assword det ers unauthorized users fr om changing conguration settings. If you ar e r esponsible for maintaining the congur ation settings of several computers, you might want t o set an Administr ator P assword.

Chapter 4. Installing or r eplacing hardwar e This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your comput er . Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-pr otective package containing the new part until the defective part has been r emoved from the computer and you ar e r eady t o install the new part.

Removing and reinstalling the front bez el Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before reading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page iii . This section pr ovides instructions on how to r emove and r einstall the front bezel.
T o install or replace a PCI car d, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets. 2. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 26. 3. At the r ear of the comput er , press the r elease button 1 t o open the car d latch 2 .

7. Pivot the car d latch to the closed position to secur e the PCI car d. Figure 14. Installing a PCI card What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go to the appr opriate section. • T o complet e the installation or r eplacement, go to “Completing the parts r eplacement” on page 49.
5. Remove any parts that might prevent your access t o the memory slots. Depending on your computer model, you might need to remove the PCI Express x16 gr aphics car d for easier access to the memory slots. See “Installing or replacing a PCI card” on page 27.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the system boar d. Push the memory module str aight down int o the slot until the retaining clips close. Figure 17.
• If you ar e replacing an optical drive, disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the r ear of the optical drive, pr ess the blue release butt on, and then slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . Figure 18. Removing the optical drive 5.
6. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay from the fr ont of the computer until the optical drive snaps into position. Figure 20. Installing the optical drive 7. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new optical drive. Figure 21.
This section provides instructions on how to install or r eplace the car d reader . T o replace the car d r eader , do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the computer .
8. Slide the new card r eader into the drive bay until it snaps into position. 9. Reconnect the card reader cable to one of the available fr ont USB connect ors on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 11 . 10. Reinstall the fr ont bez el.
CA UTION: Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There ar e no serviceable parts inside these components.
Note: Use only screws provided by Lenovo. 10. Reconnect the power supply assembly cables t o the syst em board and each of the drives. 11. Secure the power supply assembly cables with the cable clips and ties in the chassis. What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go to the appr opriate section.
6. F ollow this sequence t o r emove the four scr ews that secur e the heat sink and fan assembly to the system boar d: a. Partially remove screw 1 , then fully r emove scr ew 2 , and then fully r emove screw 1 . b. P artially r emove scr ew 3 , then fully r emove scr ew 4 , and then fully remove screw 3 .
Replacing the primary hard disk drive Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before reading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page iii . This section provides instructions on how t o replace the primary har d disk drive.
9. T o install a new hard disk drive int o the blue bracket, e x the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the br acket with the corresponding holes in the hard disk drive. Do not t ouch the cir cuit board 5 on the bott om of the har d disk drive.
13. Pr ess down on the metal latch 2 and pivot the drive cage into place, and then slide it to the front of the computer until it snaps into position. Note: There ar e two arr ows, one on the upper drive cage and one on the har d disk drive cage. The arrows ar e aligned when the hard disk drive is in the proper position.
5. Pr ess the blue r elease button to r elease the har d disk drive cage from the chassis. Figure 29. Removing the secondary hard disk drive 6. Remove the hard disk drive cage fr om the chassis by simply sliding it outwar d. 7. Pull on the blue handle to r elease and r emove the har d disk drive fr om the hard disk drive cage.
11. Install the hard disk drive cage into the chassis until it snaps int o position underneath the metal tab. Make sur e that the har d disk drive cage r elease button is secured in the chassis. Figure 31. Installing the secondary hard disk drive 12. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new hard disk drive.
5. Release the two tabs 1 that attach the fr ont fan assembly to the chassis as shown and then complet ely remove the fr ont fan from the chassis. Figure 32.
6. Insert the two tabs 2 of the new front fan assembly into the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and press the other two tabs 1 through the holes until the front fan assembly is secur ed in place. Figure 33. Installing the front fan assembly 7. Connect the front fan assembly cable to the front fan connector on the syst em board.
4. Disconnect the r ear fan assembly cable fr om the r ear fan connector on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 11.
7. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is secured in place. Figure 35. Installing the rear fan assembly 8. Connect the r ear fan assembly cable to the rear fan connector on the syst em boar d. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 11.
2. Connect a new keyboar d or mouse to one of the USB connect ors on the computer . Depending on where you want to connect the new k eyboard or mouse, see “L ocating connectors, contr ols, and indicators on the front of your comput er ” on page 7 or “Locating connectors on the r ear of your computer” on page 8.
4. P osition the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the computer cover engage the r ails on the chassis. Then, push the cover to the fr ont of the comput er until it snaps into position. Figure 37. Reinstalling the computer cover 5.
Chapter 5. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the recovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following topics: • Creating and using r ecovery media .
T o creat e r ecovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F act ory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen. Using r ecovery media This section provides instructions on how to use recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system.
3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup oper ation options. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een t o complet e the backup oper ation. P erforming a recovery oper ation This section pr ovides instructions on how t o perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on the Windows 7 operating system.
Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving recovery pr oblems” on page 56. 4. Do one of the following: • T o r escue les from your hard disk drive or from a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the Please select boot device window , select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and press Enter . The rescue medium starts. When the r escue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
Reinstalling software progr ams If a software pr ogr am you installed on your computer is not working correctly, you might need to r emove and r einstall it. Reinstalling overwrites the e xisting pr ogr ams les and usually xes any problems that you might have had with that pr ogram.
It is important t o creat e a r escue medium and a set of r ecovery media as early as possible and stor e them in a safe place for futur e use. Chapter 5 .

Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility progr am The Setup Utility pr ogr am is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , r egardless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Have at least eight charact ers in length • Contain at least one alphabetic charact er and one numeric char acter • Setup Utility progr am and har d disk drive passwords ar e not case sensitiv.
T o erase a lost or for gotten password, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the computer .
1. T urn off your comput er . 2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the Please select boot device window displays, r elease the F12 key . 3. Select the desir ed startup device and pr ess Ent er . The comput er will start up fr om the device you selected.
1. Start the Setup Utility progr am. 2. F r om the Setup Utility progr am main menu, select P ower ➙ After P ower L oss , and press Enter . 3. Select P ower On and pr ess Enter . 4. Pr ess F10 to save changes and e xit the Setup Utility progr am. P ress Enter when pr ompted t o conrm the exit.

Chapter 7. Conguring RAID This chapter pr ovides information about how t o congure Redundant Arr ay of Independent Disks (RAID) for your computer . Note: The information about conguring RAID in this chapt er is applicable only for a Windows envir onment.
