Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 “Rear connect or locations” on page 8 shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of your computer . Some connectors on the r ear of your computer ar e color -coded to help you det ermine where to connect the cables on your computer .

Locating internal drives Internal drives are devices that your comput er uses t o r ead and stor e data. Y ou can add drives to your computer to incr ease st orage capacity and enable your computer to r ead other types of media. Int ernal drives ar e installed in bays.
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er . When you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model information helps support technicians to identify your computer and provide fast er service. The following is a sample of the machine type and model label.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter pr ovides information on using some of the comput er components. F requently ask ed questions The following ar e a few tips that will help you optimiz e the use of your comput er .
Note: Y ou can use the mouse or the Up and Down arr ow keys t o highlight menu selections. Y ou can close the Start menu or the conte xt menu by clicking the mouse or pressing Esc.
Y ou can switch the function of the primary and secondary mouse butt ons and change other default behavior through the mouse pr operties function in the Windows Control P anel. Adjusting audio Sound is an important part of the comput er experience. Y our computer has a digital audio controller built into the syst em boar d.
Using CDs and DVDs Y our computer might have a DVD ROM drive or recor dable DVD drive installed. DVD drives use industry-standard, 12 cm (4.75-inch) CD media or DVD media.
1. With the computer on, pr ess the Eject/Load button. When the tr ay slides out automatically, carefully remove the disc. 2. Close the tr ay by pr essing the Eject/L oad button or by gently pushing the tr ay forward.

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapt er pr ovides information about accessibility, comfort, and r elocating your computer to other countries or regions. Accessibility and comfort Good ergonomic pr actice is important t o get the most fr om your personal comput er and t o avoid discomfort.
Adjust the monitor so the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches), and position it so you can view it without having to twist your body . Also, position other equipment you use regularly, such as the telephone or a mouse, within easy r each.
Register your comput er with L enovo T o regist er your comput er , go to http://www.lenovo.com/r egister. Then, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the registr ation. This can help authorities return your computer to you if it is lost or stolen.

Chapter 4. Security This chapt er provides information about how to prot ect your computer from theft and unauthoriz ed use. Security featur es The following security featur es ar e available on your .
Attaching an integr ated cable lock An int egrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer t o a desk, table, or other non-permanent xture. The cable lock attaches to the integr ated cable lock slot at the r ear of your comput er and is oper ated with a key .
• Administrat or Passwor d: Setting an Administr ator P assword deters unauthoriz ed users from changing conguration settings. If you are r esponsible for maintaining the congur ation settings of several computers, you might want t o set an Administr ator P assword.
• When you clear the Security Chip, be sur e t o turn your computer off and then turn it on again after you set the Security Chip to Active . Otherwise, the Clear Security Chip option will not be displayed. T o set an it em on the Security Chip submenu, do the following: 1.
Chapter 5. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace hardwar e for your computer . Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-prot ective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you ar e ready t o install the new part.
Opening the computer cover Attention: Do not open your computer or att empt any repair before r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page v .
3. Remove the front bez el by r eleasing the thr ee plastic tabs on the top of the fr ont bezel and pivoting the front bez el outwar d to r emove it from the computer .
4. T o r einstall the front bez el, align the other three plastic tabs on the bottom of the fr ont bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the fr ont bez el inwar d until it snaps int o position.
Installing or replacing a memory module Attention: Do not open your computer or att empt any repair before r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page v. This section pr ovides instructions on how to install or replace a memory module.
• If you are installing a memory module, open the retaining clips of the memory slot into which you want to install the memory module. Figure 12. Opening the retaining clips 10. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the syst em boar d.
2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 30. 3. Rotate the PCI car d r etainer to the open position. 4. Depending on whether you ar e installing or replacing a PCI car d, do one of the following: • If you are installing a PCI card, r emove the appropriate metal slot cover .
5. Remove the new PCI car d fr om its static-pr otective package. 6. Install the new car d int o the appropriat e car d slot on the system board and r otate the car d r etainer to the closed position. See “L ocating parts on the syst em board” on page 11.
4. Locat e the card r eader drive bay . See “Locating int ernal drives” on page 12. Note: Y ou might have to r emove the metal cover of the car d reader drive bay . 5. Install the new car d r eader into the card reader br acket. Then install the two scr ews t o secur e the card reader t o the br acket.
7. Install the screw to secur e the car d reader br acket to the chassis. Figure 17. Installing the screw that secures the card reader 8. Pivot the optical drive bay upwar d and connect the card reader cable t o one of the USB connectors on the system boar d.
Replacing the car d reader T o r eplace the card reader , do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that ar e connect ed to the comput er .
9. Install the car d r eader br acket to the chassis. Then push the br acket t o the left t o align the scr ew hole in the br acket with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.
10. Install the screw to secur e the car d reader br acket to the chassis. Figure 21. Installing the screw that secures the card reader 11. Pivot the optical drive bay upwar d and r econnect the car d reader cable to one of the USB connectors on the system boar d.
T o r eplace the battery, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets. 2. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the computer cover” on page 30. 3. Locat e the battery . See “Locating parts on the syst em board” on page 11.
4. Pull on the handle of the har d disk drive brack et as shown and then lift the hard disk drive bracket up fr om the optical drive bay . Figure 24. Removing the hard disk drive 5. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable from the har d disk drive t o complet ely r emove the har d disk drive fr om the chassis.
7. T o install a new hard disk drive into the br acket, e x the br acket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 4 , and pin 5 on the brack et with the corr esponding holes in the har d disk drive. Important: Do not t ouch the circuit board 3 on the bott om of the hard disk drive.
What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go t o the appropriate section. • T o complet e the installation or replacement, go t o “Completing the parts r eplacement” on page 65.
7. Pr ess the optical drive lock 1 and slide the optical drive out of the rear of the drive bay assembly . Figure 28. Removing the old optical drive 8.
9. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay until it snaps int o position. Figure 30. Installing a new optical drive 10. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the rear of the optical drive. What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go t o the appropriate section.
3. Disconnect the heat sink and fan assembly cable from the micropr ocessor fan connector on the syst em board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 11. 4. F ollow this sequence t o r emove the four screws that secure the heat sink and fan assembly to the system boar d: a.
6. Remove the two scr ews that secure the heat sink fan duct. Then r emove the heat sink fan duct fr om the failing heat sink and fan assembly . Figure 32. Removing the heat sink fan duct 7. Place the new heat sink and fan assembly on the system board so that the four screws are aligned with the corresponding holes in the system board.
10. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two screws to secur e the heat sink fan duct.
Hazardous moving parts. K eep ngers and other body parts away . CA UTION: Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels ar e present inside any component that has this label attached.

6. Pivot the optical drive upwar d and disconnect the power supply assembly cables fr om all drives and from power connectors 1 and 2 on the system board. Figure 35. Power connect ors on the system board Note: Y ou might also need to r elease the power supply assembly cables fr om some cable clips or ties that secur e the cables to the chassis.
7. At the r ear of the comput er , remove the three scr ews that secur e the power supply assembly . P ress the power supply clip 1 downward t o r elease the power supply assembly and then slide the power supply assembly to the fr ont of the computer .
11. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two screws to secur e the heat sink fan duct.
3. Locat e the syst em boar d and disconnect all cables connected to the system boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 11. 4. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 47.
b. Note the orientation of the micr oprocessor in the socket. Y ou can either look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micr oprocessor or note the orientation of the notches 2 on the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micr oprocessor on the system boar d.
12. Reinstall the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct as shown. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 47. Figure 42. Reinstalling the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct 13. Reconnect all cables that were disconnect ed fr om the system board.
3. Remove the front bez el by r eleasing the thr ee plastic tabs and pivoting the front bez el outward. Figure 43. Removing the front bezel 4. Locat e the int ernal speaker . See “L ocating components” on page 10. 5. Disconnect the internal speaker cable fr om the internal speaker connect or on the system boar d.

7. Push the internal speaker outward thr ough the hole 1 t o disengage it fr om the two metal tabs on the chassis. Then, slide the int ernal speaker to the right to remove it from the chassis.

P osition the cover presence switch so that the scr ew hole in the cover pr esence switch is aligned with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.

T o r einstall the front bez el, align the three tabs on the front bez el with the corresponding holes in the chassis and pivot the front bez el inwar ds until it snaps into position.
3. Remove the fr ont bez el. See “Removing and r einstalling the fr ont bezel” on page 30. 4. Pivot the optical drive bay upwar d and disconnect the front audio and USB assembly cables fr om the system board and not e the cables r outing. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 11.
Replacing the k eyboard or mouse Attention: Do not open your computer or att empt any repair before r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page v. This section provides instructions on how to r eplace the keyboard or mouse.
8. T o updat e your congur ation, see Chapt er 7 “Using the Setup Utility progr am” on page 75. Note: In most ar eas of the world, Lenovo r equires the r eturn of the defective Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU). Information about this will come with the CRU or will come a few days after the CRU arrives.
Chapter 6. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • Creating and using r ecovery medi.
Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e r ecovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. On the Windows Vista oper ating system, you can cr eate r ecovery media using only discs, so this operation is also called “ creating P roduct Recovery discs.
• T o perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
• Restor e your har d disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup: If you have back ed up your hard disk drive using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram, you can r estore the hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup, even if you cannot start the Windows operating syst em.
3. Click the Create Rescue Media icon. The Creat e Rescue and Recovery Media window opens. 4. In the Rescue Media ar ea, select the type of the rescue medium you want t o cr eate. Y ou can creat e a r escue medium using a disc, a USB har d disk drive, or a secondary int ernal hard disk drive.
6. In the application subfolder , look for a SETUP .EXE le or other appropriat e EXE les for setup. Double-click the le and follow the instructions on the scr een to complete the installation. Reinstalling preinstalled device drivers This section provides instructions on how to reinstall pr einstalled device drivers.
5. Open the appropriat e application subfolder . 6. In the application subfolder , look for a SETUP .EXE le or other appropriat e EXE les for setup.

Chapter 7. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , r egardless of which oper ating system you ar e using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A passwor d can be any combination of up t o 64 alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security r easons, it is r ecommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compr omised.

Erasing lost or forgott en passwords (clearing CMOS) This section pr ovides instructions on how to er ase lost or for gotten passwor ds, such as a user password.
Selecting a tempor ary startup device Use this pr ocedure to select a t emporary startup device. Note: Not all discs and hard disk drives ar e bootable. 1. T urn off your computer . 2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the comput er .
• Enabling the after power loss featur e The after power loss featur e enables your computer t o wake up when the power supply r esumes after a sudden loss of electricity . T o enable the after power loss featur e, do the following: 1. Start the Setup Utility pr ogram.

Chapter 9. P reventing pr oblems This chapter provides information that can help you avoid common pr oblems and keep your computer running smoothly . K eeping your computer current In some situations you may nd it necessary to have the most curr ent softwar e progr ams, device drivers, or operating system.
can contain applications, device drivers, BIOS ashes, or softwar e updates. When the System Updat e progr am connects to the L enovo Support Web site, the Syst em Update pr ogram aut omatically rec.
• Do not get the power switches or other controls wet. Moisture can damage these parts and cause an electrical hazard. • Always disconnect a power cord by gr asping the plug, but not the cord. Cleaning your computer It is a good pr actice to clean your computer periodically to pr otect the surfaces and ensur e tr ouble-free operation.
Cleaning a at-panel monitor surface If you have a at-panel comput er display that has a exible lm surface, do the following t o clean the special surface. Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth, or blow on the scr een to remove grit and other loose particles.
3. T urn off the comput er and all attached devices. Y our hard disk drive automatically parks the r ead/write head in a nondata area. This pr events damage to the hard disk drive.

Chapter 10. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your comput er pr oblem is not described her e, see Chapt er 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 111 for additional troubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The operating syst em does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system r esides. Usually, the operating system is on the har d disk drive. F or more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 77 .
1. Remove the new hardwar e option or softwar e. If you must remove the computer cover to r emove a hardwar e option, make sur e you r eview and follow the electrical safety information pr ovided with your computer . F or your safety, do not oper ate the computer with the cover removed.
Note: When e xternal-speaker or headphone cables ar e attached t o the audio connector , the internal speaker , if present, is disabled. In most cases, if an audio adapter is installed in one of the e xpansion slots, the audio function built int o the system board is disabled; use the audio jacks on the adapter .
An audio disc or Aut oPlay-enabled disc does not automatically play when it is inserted int o a CD drive Symptom: An audio disc or AutoPlay-enabled disc does not automatically play when it is inserted into a CD drive.
Actions: • Restart the DVD player progr am. • Close any open les, turn off the computer , and then restart the computer . • T ry a lower scr een r esolution or color depth. If these actions do not corr ect the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 108 for instructions).
• Ensure that a DVD disc is in the drive with the shiny side of the disc facing down. • Ensure that video resolution is set t o less than 1152 x 864. • On comput ers that have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive in addition to a DVD-ROM drive, make sure that the DVD disc is in the drive labeled “DVD”.
1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel . 2. Click Hardwar e and Sound . 3. Click Devices and Printers . 4. Double-click USB Enhanced P erformance Keyboar d . The USB Enhanced P erformance Keyboar d Customization pr ogram starts. If these actions do not corr ect the problem, have the computer and keyboar d serviced.
• The wireless Keyboar d is located less than ten met ers away from the tr ansceiver . • The tr ansceiver is fully installed. Action: If the T r ansceiver Communications LED is not on, reconnect the transceiver and the keyboar d.
If these actions do not corr ect the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 108 for instructions). If the problem persists, run the t ests described in the documentation that comes with your printer . If you cannot correct the problem, have the computer serviced.
