Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 “Rear connect or locations” on page 7 shows the locations of the connectors on the r ear of your computer . Connector Description Audio line-in connector Used to receive audio signals from an ext ernal audio device, such as a ster eo system. When you attach an ext ernal audio device, a cable is connected between the audio line-out connector of the device and the audio line-in connect or of the computer .

Chapter 2. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your computer . This chapter contains the following topics: • “Install.
2. Use the k eys that came with your computer t o unlock the keylock 1 in the comput er cover . Pr ess the computer cover -release button 2 and then remove the comput er cover .

• If your comput er has only one CPU installed, be sur e to install memory modules only in the memory slots adjacent t o that CPU . • If your computer has two CPUs installed, install equal numbers of memory modules in both sets of CPU DIMM slots for maximum performance.

b. If your comput er has six memory slots on the syst em board, you might have t o use more for ce to remove the memory module installed in memory slot 1 .
8. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the key 2 in the memory slot. Push the memory module straight down int o the slot until the r etaining clips close. Figure 14.

5. Remove the new PCI car d from its static-pr otective package. 6. Install the new PCI car d into the appropriat e slot on the syst em boar d. See “Locating parts and connectors on the syst em boar d” on page 9. Figure 17. Installing a new PCI card 7.
6. T o install a new har d disk drive int o the br acket, e x the sides of the br acket properly and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the br acket with the corr esponding holes in the har d disk drive. Do not touch the cir cuit board 5 on the hard disk drive.
8. Slide the new har d disk drive with the br acket and the signal cable into the har d disk drive bay until it snaps into position. Figure 21. Installing a new hard disk drive 9. Locat e one of the e xtra ve-wir e power cables and connect it t o the new har d disk drive.
Note: Y ou might need t o disconnect power cables for other har d disk drives installed in your comput er and then r otate the air ow wall outwar d for easier access t o the r ear of the new har d disk drive. Figure 22. Rotating the air ow wall 10.
2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 13. 3. Remove the fr ont be zel. See “Removing and r einstalling the fr ont bez el” on page 14. 4. Locat e the hard disk drive that you want t o replace. 5. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the r ear of the har d disk drive.
1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the comput er . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that ar e connected t o the computer . 2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 13.
a. Connect the signal cable to the r ear of the new optical drive. Note: If you want to r eplace the signal cable, remove the PCI car d holder . See “Removing and reinstalling the PCI card holder” on page 15 . Then, disconnect the old signal cable fr om the system board.
• If you are replacing heat sink and fan assembly 1, go to step 6. • If you are r eplacing heat sink and fan assembly 2, do the following: a. Remove the optical drive. See “Replacing the optical drive” on page 27. b. Pivot the optical drive br acket as shown in the following illustr ation and then r emove it from the chassis.

14. Reinstall the PCI car d holder . See “Removing and reinstalling the PCI car d holder” on page 15. What to do next: • T o work with another piece of har dware, go to the appr opriate section. • T o complete the installation or replacement, go t o “Completing the parts r eplacement” on page 37.

7. Insert the two tabs 1 on the new front fan assembly brack et into the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and then pr ess the two tabs thr ough the holes until the brack et is secured in place. Figure 30. Installing the new front fan assembly bracket 8.
T o replace the rear fan assembly, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the comput er . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that ar e connected t o the computer .
9. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is secur ed in place. Figure 32. Installing the rear fan assembly 10. Connect the r ear fan assembly cable to the appropriat e r ear fan connector on the system board. See “Locating parts and connectors on the syst em board” on page 9.
4. Connect a new keyboard or mouse to one of the USB connectors on the computer . Depending on where you want to connect the new keyboar d or mouse, see “L ocating controls and connect ors on the front of your computer” on page 6 or “L ocating connectors on the rear of your comput er ” on page 7.
5. P osition the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the comput er cover engage with the rails on the chassis. Then, close the computer cover to engage the cover -release button. Figure 34. Reinstalling the computer cover 6.
Locking devices Note: Make sur e that any security cables you installed do not interfere with other computer cables. This section describes the differ ent kinds of locking devices for your computer . P assword prot ection T o deter unauthorized use of your comput er , you can use the Setup Utility progr am to set a passwor d. When you turn on your computer , you are pr ompted t o type the passwor d. The computer cannot be used until a valid password is typed in.
Chapter 3. Recover y information This chapt er pr ovides information about the recovery solutions provided by L enovo. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Creating and using r ecovery m.
• On the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, you can use r ecovery media t o r estore the comput er t o the fact ory default settings only . Y ou can use recovery media t o put the comput er in an oper ational state after all other methods of recovery have failed.
• On r ecordable discs (a r ecordable optical drive is r equired for this option) After you have back ed up the contents on the har d disk drive, you can restor e the complete contents of the hard disk drive, rest ore only the selected les, or rest ore only the Windows oper ating syst em and applications.
Using the Rescue and Recovery workspace The Rescue and Recovery workspace r esides in a prot ected, hidden area of your har d disk drive that operat es independently fr om the Windows oper ating syst em. This enables you to perform r ecovery operations even if you cannot start the Windows oper ating system.
Creating and using a r escue medium With a r escue medium, such as a disc or a USB har d disk drive, you can r ecover the computer from failur es that prevent you fr om gaining access t o the Rescue and Recovery workspace on your har d disk drive. Notes: 1.
• If you have cr eated a r escue medium using the secondary internal hard disk drive, set the secondary internal har d disk drive as the rst boot device in the startup device sequence t o start the rescue medium. See “Selecting a startup device” on page 51.

Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility progr am Y ou can use the Setup Utility pr ogram t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility pr ogram.
P assword consider ations A passwor d can be any combination of up t o 12 (1 to 12) alphabetic and numeric charact ers. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong passwor d that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwords ar e not case sensitive.
USB Support Use this option to enable or disable USB connectors. ICH SA T A When this feature is set t o Disabled , any optical drives or eSA T A devices are disabled and will not be displayed in the system conguration.
3. Select the startup devices for the Primary Startup Sequence, the Automatic Startup Sequence, and the Error Startup Sequence. 4. Pr ess Esc to return t o the Setup Utility progr am main menu. Chapter 7. T roubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms This chapter pr ovides information about some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your computer pr oblem is not described in this chapt er , see Chapt er 8 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 65 for additional tr oubleshooting resources.
Diagnostic progr ams Diagnostic pr ograms ar e used t o test har dware components of your computer . Diagnostic pr ograms can also report operating-system-contr olled settings that int erfere with the corr ect oper ation of your system.
