Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need t o be familiar with before you service a ThinkPad Notebook.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only approved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies t o all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRU.
Strat egy for replacing a hard disk drive Always try t o run a low-level format befor e r eplacing a hard disk drive. This will cause all customer data on the hard disk to be lost. Be sur e that the customer has a current backup of the data before doing this task.
General Announce V ariant (GA V) This is a standard model (x ed conguration). GA Vs are announced and offer ed to all customers. The MTM portion of the machine label is a 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, wher e model = a “xed part number ”, not “CT O” (Example: 1829-F1U).

Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbo x (L enovo System T oolbo x) Lenovo ThinkV antage ® T oolbo x (Lenovo System T oolbo x in Windows Vista ® and Windows ® XP) is a diagnostic progr am that works through the Windows oper ating system.

System supporting the L enovo diagnostics progr ams The section pr ovides information about ThinkP ad comput ers that support the Lenovo diagnostics progr ams.
T o run the UEFI diagnostic pr ogram, do the following: 1. T urn on the computer . If the computer cannot be turned on, go to “P ower syst em checkout” on page 41, and check the power sour ces. If an err or code is displayed, go t o “Symptom-to-FRU inde x” on page 50 for err or code descriptions and troubleshooting hints.
4. When the ThinkP ad logo is displayed, repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key . When the Boot Menu window opens, release the F12 key . 5. Use the arr ow keys t o select A T API CDx (x: 0, 1, ...) and then press Enter . The diagnostic progr am will be launched automatically .
Checking oper ational char ging T o check whether the battery char ges pr operly during operation, use a dischar ged battery pack or a battery pack that has less than 50% of the total power remaining when installed in the comput er . P erform oper ational char ging.
5. Measure the voltage of the backup batt ery . See the following gure. Wire V oltage (V dc) Red +2.5 t o +3.2 Black Ground • If the voltage is corr ect, replace the system boar d. • If the voltage is not corr ect, replace the backup battery . • If the backup battery discharges quickly after r eplacement, r eplace the syst em boar d.

Chapter 4. Related service information This chapter pr esents following information: • “Restoring the factory cont ents by using Pr oduct Recovery discs” on page 45 • “Restoring the fact ory.
The recovery disc set consists of the user instructions and the following set of DVDs t o rest ore the comput er to the original factory congur ation. Operating System Recovery Disc (one disc) This disc rest ores the Microsoft ® Windows oper ating system.
Note: After r estoring a drive to the factory default settings, you might need to r einstall some device drivers. P asswords As many as thr ee passwor ds may be needed for any ThinkP ad Notebook: the power-on passwor d (POP), the har d-disk passwor d (HDP), and the supervisor password (SVP).
4. Connect the ac power adapter . T urn on the comput er and wait until the POS T ends. After the POS T ends, the password pr ompt will not be displayed. The power-on passwor d has been removed. 5. Reinstall the backup batt ery and the battery pack. (B) If an SVP has been set and is known by the service technician: 1.
T o put the computer into scr een blank mode, do as follows: 1. Pr ess Fn+F3. A panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) appears. 2. Select Power off display (keep curr ent power plan) (in Windows XP , k eep current power scheme ).
Note: If the comput er enters the hibernation mode while it is docked to the docking station, do not undock it before r esuming normal operation. If you do undock it and then try to r esume normal operation, you will get an err or message, and you will have t o restart the system.

Chapter 8. Removing and r eplacing a FRU This chapter pr esents dir ections and drawings for use in r emoving and replacing a FRU . Be sure t o observe the following general rules: 1. Do not try to service any computer unless you have been tr ained and certied.
Before servicing ThinkP ad X200, X200s, X200si, X201, X201i, and X201s Removing the SIM card: Some models of the ThinkP ad X200, X200s, X200si, X201, X201i, and X201s you are servicing might have the SIM card that the customer has been installed. If the computer you are servicing has the SIM car d, remove it before you start the servicing.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: The Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbox (in Windows 7), Lenovo Syst em T oolbo x (in Windows Vista and Windows XP), and Lenovo Solution Cent er (in Windows 7) have an automatic battery diagnostic that determines if the batt ery pack is defective.
Attention: • Do not dr op the har d disk drive or apply any physical shock to it. The har d disk drive is sensitive to physical shock. Improper handling can cause damage and permanent loss of data. • Befor e removing the drive, have the user make a backup copy of all the information on it if possible.
