Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some product damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .
replacing parts. The Off state of a power indicat or does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside a product ar e zer o. Befor e you remove the covers from a pr oduct equipped with a power cor d, always make sure that the power is turned off and that the product is unplugged fr om any power source.
P ower cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cor ds and power adapters supplied by the pr oduct manufactur er . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you int end to use with your computer equipment appears t o be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
General batt er y notice DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by L enovo contain a coin cell battery t o provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile products, such as not ebook computers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack t o pr ovide syst em power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell batt er y, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The battery contains lithium and can e xplode if not pr operly used, handled, or disposed of.

Status indicators Y our computer has syst em-status indicat ors and power -status indicat ors. The status indicators show the current status of your computer . Chapter 2. Using your comput er This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. Register your computer When you r egister your computer , information is enter ed int o a database, which enables L enovo to contact you in case of a r ecall or other sever e pr oblem.
• T ake advantage of the networking featur es by use of the Access Connections pr ogram. • T o learn mor e about using the wir eless featur es of your comput er , r efer to “Wireless connections” on page 32. • T o tr avel more condently, be sure to check the tips in “T r aveling with your comput er ” on page 47.
P ower conservation • Fn+F4 Put your computer into sleep mode. T o r eturn to normal oper ation, press the Fn k ey only . If you want t o use the combination to put the computer into hibernation mode or do-nothing mode, change the settings in the P ower Manager pr ogram.
Pr ess Fn+F6 t o open the Communications settings window . F r om this window , you can take a picture, change the camer a and audio settings, and open the Communications Utility pr ogram. Adjusting the brightness level of the computer display • Fn+F8 : The computer display becomes dimmer .
V olume and mut e buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Speaker mute button 2 V olume control button 3 Micr ophone mute button If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
Windows key Y ou can display or hide the Start menu of the Windows oper ating system by pr essing the Windows key 1 : Y ou also can use the Windows key together with another key t o achieve other functions. F or details, r efer to the help information system of the Windows operating system.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
Replacing the cap The cap 1 on the end of the T rackP oint pointing stick is r emovable. Y ou can replace it as shown in the drawing. Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one.
Using the Ultr aNav pointing device and an ext ernal mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T r ackP oint pointing device and the touch pad.
The ac power adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components: • The transformer pack that converts ac power adapt er for use with the comput er . • The power cord that plugs into the ac outlet and into the transformer pack. Attention: Using an impr oper power cord could cause severe damage to your computer .
Managing the batt er y power With P ower Manager , you can adjust your power settings to give you the best balance between performance and power saving. F or instructions on accessing the P ower Manager pr ogram, see “ Accessing ThinkV antage applications” on page 14.
3. F rom the left pane, select the task folder for which you want t o enable the wak eup function. The scheduled tasks ar e displayed. 4. Click a scheduled task, and then click the Conditions tab. 5. Under P ower , select the check bo x for W ake the computer to run this task .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
Connecting to the network Y our computer has one or mor e network cards for connecting t o the Internet and t o your company's wired LAN or wir eless LAN network. Note: Some models come with a built-in wireless W AN card enabling you to establish wireless connections over r emote public or privat e networks.
Establishing wir eless LAN connections Y our computer comes with a built-in wir eless network card and a congur ation utility to help you make wireless connections and monitor the status of your co.
F or maximum performance fr om your wireless WAN connection, please keep the following best usage guidelines in mind: • Keep your notebook away from your body . • Place your notebook on a at surface and open your computer display to an angel of slightly more than 90 degrees.
Access Connections gauge If your comput er is running the Windows 7 oper ating system, the Access Connections gauge on the taskbar displays the signal str ength and status of your wireless connection.

Playing sound Y our pr ojector might have one or more audio-input connectors. T o project sound, you will need to attach the combo audio jack on your comput er to these connectors by using an audio cable (commercially available). Using the Extend desktop function Y our comput er supports a function named the Extend desktop function.
Using audio features Y our comput er is equipped with the following: • Combo audio jack, 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) in diamet er • Built-in speakers • Built-in microphone The following table shows which functions of the audio devices attached to the jacks on your computer or docking station ar e supported.

Chapter 4. Security This chapter provides information about how t o protect your computer fr om theft and unauthorized use. Attaching a mechanical lock Y ou can attach a mechanical lock to your computer , to help pr event it fr om being removed without your permission.
P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password to help pr otect your computer against access by unauthorized users. If you set a power-on password, the passwor d prompt is displayed on the scr een whenever you turn on the computer . Y ou must ent er the corr ect passwor d to start using the computer .
Setting a hard disk password 1. P rint these instructions. 2. Save all open les, and exit all applications. 3. T urn your computer off and then on again. 4. When the logo screen is displayed, press F1. the ThinkPad Setup progr am main menu opens. 5.
• T o change the hard disk password, type the curr ent passwor d in the Enter Current P assword eld. Then type the new password in the Enter New Password eld, and r etype the passwor d you just enter ed t o verify it in the Conrm New Password eld.
– Enabling or disabling the P assword at unattended boot feature – Specifying the minimum length for power -on passwor ds and hard disk passwor ds – Changing the setting for the security chip .
9. Commit your passwor d to memory and pr ess Enter . A Setup Notice window is displayed. Attention: Y ou might want to not e down your password and k eep it in a safe place. If you for get your supervisor password, L enovo cannot reset your password.

9. P ress F10 t o save changes and e xit. 10. P ress Ent er in the Setup Conrmation window to conrm the exit. T o set the security chip, you have t o start Client Security Solution, and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: If your computer is a Windows 7 model, Client Security Solution is not preinstalled on your syst em.
LED behavior of the ngerprint reader T able 4. LED behavior list_ngerprint reader Indicator Description Steady gr een The ngerprint reader is ready to swipe. Blinking green once The ngerprint is being authenticated or has been authenticated.
1. Place the ball of your nger—that is, the centr al part of the ngerprint—on the small cir cle above the reader . Make sur e that the entir e top joint of the nger is on the r eader . 2. Apply light pr essure and swipe your nger acr oss the r eader in one smooth motion.
Attention: If you always use your ngerprint to log on to the syst em, you might for get your passwor d. Write down your password, and keep it in a safe place. If you forget it and for some reason you cannot swipe your nger across the reader - for e xample, if you injure that nger - you cannot start the computer or change the password.
• The r eader oft en fails to enroll or authenticat e your ngerprint. If your nger has any of the following conditions, you might not be able to register or authenticate it: • Y our nger is wrinkled. • Y our nger is rough, dry, or injur ed.
If an Encryption solid stat e drive or a Disk Encryption hard disk drive is supported and installed in your computer , you can logically dispose of all the data on the drive in a very short time by er asing the cryptogr aphic key .

Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. Notes: 1. There are a variety of methods to choose fr om when considering how t o recover in the event of a software- or har dware-r elated problem.
• On the Windows 7 operating system, you can use recovery media to rest ore the comput er t o the factory default settings only . Y ou can use r ecovery media to put the computer in an operational stat e after all other methods of recovery have failed.
P er forming a recovery operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am. T o perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram, do the following: 1.
Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving r ecovery problems” on page 68. 4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.
1. Attach the USB har d disk drive to one of the USB connect ors on your comput er . 2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the Boot Menu window opens, r elease the F12 key . 3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB hard disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Ent er .
Attention: If you need updat ed device drivers, do not download them fr om the Windows Updat e Web site. Obtain them from L enovo. F or mor e information, see “Making sure device drivers ar e curr ent” on page 130.
Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to install or replace hardwar e for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 69 • “Replacing the batt.
Note: If an unauthorized battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The batt ery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the corr ect Lenovo battery for this system. ” DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Install a fully charged battery until it clicks into place. 5. Slide the battery latch to the locked position. 6. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Using the e xtended life battery F or longer battery life, an e xtended life batt ery is available as an option.

Replacing the hard disk drive Before you start, print these instructions. Notes: The har d disk drive or solid state drive is very sensitive.
• Never remove the drive while the syst em is operating, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode. T o replace the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the computer .
8. Attach the side rubber rails to the new hard disk drive or the side spacer r ails t o the new solid state drive. 9. Insert the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive into the slot; then pr ess it rmly into place. 10. Reinstall the cover of the slot.
11. Reinstall the screw . 12. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 69. 13. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the k eyboard Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
6. T urn the computer over and open the display . 7. P ush hard in the dir ection shown by the arrows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 . 8. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected.
Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. Attach the connector . 2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sur e that the r ear edges of the keyboar d ar e under the fr ame, as shown by the arrows.
3. Slide the keyboar d in the dir ection shown by the arrows. 4. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the screws. Chapter 6 .
5. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 . 6. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 69. 7. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables.
Replacing memory in the slot on the underside of the computer Y our comput er has two memory slots: one under the k eyboard and another on the underside of the computer . T o replace the memory module, follow the procedur e below: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the computer .
7. Pivot the memory module downward until it snaps into place. 8. Make sur e that the memory module is rmly x ed in the slot and cannot be moved easily . 9. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 .
6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the memory module you ar e installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the memory module, do not t ouch its contact edge.
2. When the logo screen is displayed, pr ess the F1 key . The ThinkP ad Setup progr am main menu opens. The Installed memory item shows the total amount of memory installed in your computer . Replacing the wireless LAN/WiMAX card Before you start, print these instructions.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The card pops up 2 . 7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket contact of the computer .
Note: If the new PCI Express Mini Card has two connectors, as in the next dr awing, put the white cable in the cable pr otection tube. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of the connect ors 1 . Secur e the card with the screw 2 .
10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card. Be sure to attach the gr ay cable to the connect or marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the black cable to the connect or marked “ AUX” or “ A ”.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Then remove the card. 7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corresponding socket contact of the computer 1 .
Note: If the new PCI Express Mini Card has two connectors, as in the next dr awing, put the white cable in the cable pr otection tube. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of the connect ors 1 . Secur e the card with the screw 2 .
13. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Installing and r eplacing the wireless W AN car d Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.

8. Align the contact edge of the new wir eless WAN car d with the corresponding socket. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 . Secure the card with the screw 2 . Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your comput er , the card might have only one connect or .
10. Connect the cables to the new wir eless W AN card. 11. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 . 12. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 69. 13. T urn the computer over again.
4. Locat e the SIM car d slot inside the battery compartment. Gently pull the tab ext ending fr om the slot until it stops 1 . The car d comes partway out of the slot. Remove the car d 2 . 5. Hold the new car d with the metal contact facing upward and going into the slot rst.
2. Unlock the bay lock latch 1 by sliding it to the top. While holding the bay lock latch in the unlocked position, slide the bay eject latch 2 to the left, then pull out the Ultr abay device 3 . 3. Insert the r eplaceable device into the bay; then press the device rmly into the connector .
Chapter 7. Enhancing your computer This section pr ovides information on installing devices and taking advantage of your comput er's high-technology featur es.
T o hot-swap the Ultr abay device, do the following: 1. Solution : Make sure that your wireless LAN driver is the latest version. Check the Web site and conrm that the driver version supported by the Access Connections pr ogram is the latest documented in the r eadme le. Make sure that your computer is within range of a wireless access point.
