Place small dry pieces of kindli ng on top of the paper , criss-c rossing the kindling so that there are air spaces in between.

These cracks can be minimized by proper curing as described in “First Fires”. They will not normally dimin- ish the effectiveness of the refractory .

Non-Combustible Material NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRA TIONS ARE NOT TO SCALE. 10 Mantel A wood mantel, if installed, must be at least 48" (1.2 m) above the base of the fireplace ( see Figure 8B ) . There is no restriction regarding the length or the width of the mantel.

During operation, the fireplace requires air for combustion and draws air out of the house.
