3 NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRATIONS NOT TO SCALE. SOFTWOOD VS HARDWOOD Softwoods contain about 15 percent highly flammable resin which generates creosote soot in the chimney flue. Burning softwood exclu- sively may not be as desirable nor as safe as burning denser hardwoods.

6 NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRATIONS NOT TO SCALE. CREOSOTE FORMATION AND REMOVAL When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors, which combine with expelled moisture to form creosote. The creo- sote vapors condense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a slow-burning fire.
