Getting Started and Pow ering Up The ISA 828 is a high quality eight-channel micr ophone pr eamplifier, which can be used to r ecor d microphone, line-l evel or instrument sour ces.
F r ont Panel Input Stage Eight number ed sections ar e included on the fr ont panel for setting up each of the eight anal ogue inputs. Input Pr essing Input steps thr ough each of the thr ee inputs, as indicated by the c orr esponding LEDs. When the Mic LED is lit, the micr ophone input is active etc.
Mode 1 Mic Gain Range 0-30 With the 30-60 switch off, the st epped gain dial operates ov er a gain range of 0dB to +30dB, the l evel of gain chosen being indicated on the fr ont panel by the outer arc of y ellow number s around the gain knob.
Insert In Activating the INSERT switch (illuminat ed when active) br eaks the signal path of the channel, so that the signal connected t o the ADC Input 25-pin connector on the r ear panel routes t o the digital output car d (if connected) rather than the dir ect mic, line or instrument signal.
Mode 2. Meters Pr e ADC switch engaged This is the mode to use when the anal ogue input signals ar e being rout ed to other har dwar e devices (such as dynamics pr oces sors) using the analogue outputs/ADC Input on the r ear panel (acting as sends/returns) bef or e converting t o digital.
Analogue Inputs On the r ear panel, ther e ar e 8 XLR inputs for c onnecting micr ophones and 8 1/4” TRS inputs for line-l evel sour ces. Each one is number ed acc or dingly and c orr esponds to the r ele vant section on the fr ont panel.
IEC mains inlet This socket all ows the supplied IEC cabl e to be c onnected to enabl e the 828 to be power ed. A fused voltage sel ector is also pr esent, with a diagram al ongside to indicate the positions that r elate to each voltage.
In single-wir e mode, switch out, the AES channels 1-8 can be transmitted at sampl e rates up to 192kHz using onl y 8 AES connections. Ther efor e, channels 1-8 ar e always availabl e in AES f ormat, r egar dles s of the S/PDIF switch setting.
176.4/192kHz sample r ates: Connector 1 = channels 1 and 2 Connector 2 = channels 3 and 4 ADA T™ lightpipe cabl es ar e availabl e fr om your loc al dealer, or in the UK fr om Studiospares (t el +44 (0)20 74821692): stock number 585-510. W or d Clock In and Out The internal ADC can be synchr onised to an external wor d clock.
Level Pr ofes sional micr ophones tend to have l ow output impedances and so mor e lev el can be achiev ed by selecting the higher impedance positions of the ISA 828 mic pr e-amp. F requency r esponse Micr ophones with defined pr esence peaks and tail or ed fr equency r esponses can be further enhanced by choosing l ower impedance settings.
Impedance Setting Quick Guide In general, the f ollowing sel ections will yield these r esults: High mic pr e-amp impedance settings · Will generate mor e overall l evel · Will tend to mak e the lo w- and mid-frequency r esponse of the microphone flatt er · Will impr ove the high-fr equency response of the micr ophone.

FA Q s Q: What ar e the basic featur es of the ISA 828? A: Eight F ocusrite mic pr es, eight line inputs, f our instrument inputs, optional 8-channel 192kHz A/D conv ersion.
Q: What r ear panel connections ar e featur ed? A: The ISA 828 has 8 XLRs for c onnecting micr ophones and 8 1/4” TRS Jack line-le vel inputs. Ther e ar e also 2 25-pin D-type connector s: one for t.

Focusrite in the UK, or its authorised dis tributors worldwide, will do their bes t to ensur e that any fault is r emedied as quickly as possibl e.
Appendix 1 Recor ding AES Outputs 1-8 to Pro T ools ™ HD at 192kHz T o recor d all eight channels digitally t o Pro T ools™ HD at 192kHz, all eight AES channels need to be enabl ed on the ISA 828 (default jumper positions shown on Appendix 2) and 2 Digit al car ds must be fitted in the HD192 int erfac e.
21 Appendix 2 Digital Car d Jumper Positions - Disabling AES Outputs 5-8 F our jumpers on the digital c ar d can be made to disabl e channels 5-8 on the AES Output. This is so that a standar d 25-pin to 25-pin Pr o T ools™ cable c an be used to r ecor d channels 1-4 at 192kHz.
