5 1 Softke ys Y our cam era has three “ softkeys. ” A s oftk ey is a b utton whose function changes according to wh at is displayed abo ve it. F or e xample, in the Capture m ode, the follo wing screen can be displayed: In this case, pres sing the left softk ey enter s the Adv anced F ocus Modes.
6 Y our Statu s LCD A display on the top of the camera sho ws the curr ent settings. The follo wing subsections br iefly describe each entry . For infor mation on how to def ine setting s through the C apture mode, s ee page 24. The camera mus t be turned on and in the Capture mode to vie w and interact with this display .
7 1 Exposure Compensation In very lar ge rooms, under lo w light, you may achiev e better results by turning the flash of f entirely , or by utilizing the flash sync capability with an e xternal flash unit. While in Capture mode, the camera e xposur e can be adjusted from -2.
8 Pictures Remaining The Pictures Remaining icon chan ges automatically to ind icate the remaining number of pictures that can be stored at the current quality and resolution settin g.
9 1 IrD A (Infrared) Communication In a camera-to-c amera connection in the Re vie w mode, two cameras can communicate with each other throug h an IrD A connection. The Ir D A Communication ico n appears and chan ges to indicate the state of the communication with its IrD A partner camera.
10 Batteries The battery po wer icon changes automatically . It is a display-only icon, you cannot select or ch ange it. Battery life is rapidly redu ced when Pre vie w or R e view mo des are in us e. Pictures stored on the memor y card are not lost if th e batteries are depleted.
11 1 Instal ling the Batteries Remov e the batteries if the camera will not be us ed for an e xtended perio d of time. This will extend the battery life and pre vent camera damage from battery leaks or corros ion. If the batteries are remo ved from the cam era for more than a fe w days, the date and time will be deleted and must b e reset.
12 Quality Y ou can s et your camera to take pictur es with a Good, Better , Best, and Uncompressed Quality setting. The Quality settin g indicates how much the picture is compre ssed to sa ve space on the memory card.
13 1 Understanding Quality and R esolution K eep in mind that with your camera you are g enerally going to g et beautiful digital pictures. Bu t based on two f actors, reso lution and compression, som e pictures will be of a high er quality than others.
14 Remo vab le Memory Ca r d The camera uses a re mov able memory card, also referred to as a CompactFlash or K OD AK Pict ure C ard, for storing your pictur es. The camera cann ot take pictures without the memory card. Y ou can erase or protect the picture data on the card and then reuse it.
15 1 P o wer M ana geme nt Y ou can use batteries or an A C Adapter for K OD AK DC200 Series Digital Cameras to po wer your camera. T o conserve po wer , the camera h as a sleep mode. Understanding Sleep Mode After a specif ied period of inacti vity , the camera enters sleep mode by turning the color LCD of f.
16 Using the Batt ery Ch arger T o ensure that you ha ve a constant supp ly of freshly char ged batteries, a battery charger and fo ur AA Ni-MH recharg eable batteries ar e pro vided. These batteries need to be charged before usin g and take up to eight hours to f ully char ge.

K odak sug gests customers tak e advantage of any community battery rec ycling programs that may exist in your area. C ontact your local w aste remo ver o r recycler f or details.
19 2 2 T aking Pictures This chapter pro vides information to help you take great pictur es. Y ou can simply turn on the camera, p osition the Mode d ial to Capture, and start taking pictures . Ho wev er , you may want to change so me of the default settin gs.
20 Setting the Camera to Capture Mode Pre view ing a Pictur e If you w ant to see what a picture looks like b efore you tak e it, you can pr e view the image on the co lor LCD. T urn the Mode dial to Capture. The lens extends to the default picture-taking position .
21 3 2 Capturing Pictures T a king a n y ki nd of pi cture, Still, Bu rst, or Time-l apse is basic ally t he same. The only difference is the amount of time you hold down the Shutter button.
22 Setting Flash, Exposure Compensatio n, Picture T ype, and Qualit y Y ou set the Flash, Exposure Compensat ion, Picture T ype, and Quality settings using the Scroll an d Select buttons located on top of the camera. Setting the Sel f-Timer Flash — see page 6.
23 3 2 Using Zoom There are tw o types of zoo ming. Optical zoom ing uses the lens to pro duce quality pictures. Digital zoomin g continues the zo oming process b ut reduces the quality of the picture. The camera is equipped with an optical zoom lens that lets you zoom in from W ide Angle (3 8 mm) to T elePhoto (1 15 mm).
24 Defining the Capture Settings Y ou can use the defaul t settings or you can define settings using the Capture mode menus. Capture mode setting s af fect only future pictures , they cannot be used to alter pictur es you ha ve already tak en.
25 3 2 Picture T ype Settings There are three Picture T ype settings which allo w you to select the type of picture and then def ine the picture characteristics. The Picture T ype setting is where you select the camera resolution for pictures. Pictur e T ype settings can also be set through the Status LCD.
26 Album Settings Album settings let you specify the album in which pictures will be sto red on the memory card. All future pictures are sto red in the selected alb um until you change the setting or turn off the camera. 1 Press to hig hlight one o f the foll owi ng: q No Album — does not st ore your pictures in an alb um.
27 3 2 White Balance Settings White Balance settings adjust the color balance to remov e the color cast that the current light ing condition s add. 1 Press to hi ghlight the type of white balance you w ant to us e. q Au t o m a t i c — ta kes pictur es unde r a v ariety of lighting condition s.
28 W atermark Settings W atermark settings allo w you to place a d ate, time, text, or logo waterm ark on the pictures you take. W atermarks will only appear on future pictures, and you can see them on pictures in the Re view mode when the full resolution picture appears.
29 3 2 Adv a nced Exposure Modes Settings Advanced Exposure Modes settings allow you to select four e xposure modes: q Prog rammed AE — uses the programmed automatic e xposure s etting which selects the appropriate flash and aperture setting.
30 Adv anced Focus Mode Settings The Advan ced Focus Mode settings allow you to select one of the follo wing: q Multi-Spot Auto Focus q Single-Spot Auto Focus q Manual Focus 1 Press to highlight the type of advan ced focus mod e you wa nt to use.
31 3 2 Pref erence s Setti ngs The Preferences settings are Capture, Date and T ime, and Camera Name. Capture 1 Press to select the particular sett ing you want to change. q Quickview — d isplays the picture jus t taken f or a dur ation of 0.5 - 3 0 second s.
32 Date and Time Camera Name When you name the camera, it is included in the header of each picture f ile. 1 Press to change the va lue for the highlig hted fi eld. 2 Press to mov e from o ne fi eld to anot her . 3 Press Format to select a date/time format.
33 3 2 Using Scripts Scripts are electronic f iles on the camera memor y card that automate ro utine camera operations and ex tend camera functions. When a memory card containing a script is placed in y our camera, the s cript appears as an o ption in either the Captur e or Re vie w modes.
34 Choosing a Script on the Camera 1 Press to choose the script you want to ex ecute. The K odak Script screen may di splay a dif ferent li st of sc ripts, d epending on what is loaded on the memo ry card. 2 Press Start. Any steps tha t follow depend on the chosen script.
35 3 2 Adding Sound to a Picture i n Quic kvie w After t aking a pi cture with Quickvie w turned on, you can attach up to two minutes of record ed sound to the p icture. Once the picture dis appears from Quickview , you mu st enter the Re view mode to record sound.

39 3 Revi e wing Pictures Y ou can vie w your pictures one at a time on a f ull screen, or you c an view them one at a time in a cont inuous scroll, or in a f ast scroll on a f ilmstrip screen. Viewing the Remain ing Mem ory The Re vie w screen d isplays the amount of memory re maining on the card .
40 Setting Revi e w Mode Preferences The Revie w mode preferences allo w you to select s pecif ic settings for this mode. Rev ie w mode pr eferences include: q Overlay — display on the LCD the frame numb er , date and time, and sof tkey funct ions wh en reviewing pictur es.
41 3 Over lay Preference s Use the Overlay preferences to turn the o v erlay on or of f. The o v erlay appears on the color LCD and displays the softkey labels. Slid e Show Prefere nces A slide sho w displays each s elected picture for a specif ied interv al.
42 Playback Prefere nces Use Playback prefer ences to specify ho w quickly Burst, T ime-lapse, and Album pictures are displayed during full-sc reen playback.
43 3 Print O r der Pr eferences Pictures on the me mory card need to be marked on the camera befo re the Print Order feature can be u sed. See “ Marking P ictures ” on pag e 44. 1 Press to sele ct the opt ion yo u want. q Done — allows you to sav e, cancel, or continue the print order .
44 Marking Pictures When you w ant to select a number of pictures and carry out an action on th em, you must f irst mark each picture. Marked pictures can be deleted , copied from camera to camera, pr otected, or transferred from alb um to alb um.
45 3 Creating a New Alb um in Revie w Mode In order to place a marked picture in an a lbum, y ou fir st need to create on e. Album s can be created in eith er Re vie w mode or in C apture mode. See “ Alb u m Settings ” on page 26. 1 Display the Alb um screen as described in the “ Placing Marked Pictures in an Albu m ” sectio n on pag e 44.
46 Protecting Y our Pictures Y ou can saf eguard y our pictures fro m being deleted accidentally from the cam era memory card. Th is feature is very useful if the camera and memo ry card are used by more than one pe rson. 1 Set the Mod e di al to R e vi e w .
47 3 Copying Mark ed Pictures fr om Camera to Came ra Y ou can s end marked p ictures to or recei ve marked pictures fro m another camera in the Re view mode. Using On-Camera Applications On-camera applications are files residing on your memory card that exten d the functionality of y our camera.
48 Loading On-Camera Applications onto a Memory Card On-camera applications must be loaded into the System folder of your memo ry card to be accessible. Us e K OD AK Digital Camera Sof tware (Mounter) / f or DC290 or a CF card reader to cop y the on-camera ap plications to the System folder on the m emory card.
49 3 Opening Albums The Re vie w screen sho ws you when pictures are grouped in an alb um and allows you to open the album to vie w the pictures. If the highlighted picture resides in an album , an albu m icon appears and the left softke y is labelled Open.
50 Expanding and Collapsing Pictures It is important to note that y our camera treats Burst and T ime-lapse pictures as folders containing a series of indi vidual p ictures, b ut displays them as a single picture until you press Expand.
51 3 Adding Sound to Pictures Y ou can attach up to tw o minutes of recorded sound to a selected pictur e at any time while revie wing your pictures. W ith Burst and Time- lapse pictures, recor ded sound can on ly be added and played when the s eries is collapsed.
52 Deleting a Picture Deleting M ultiple Pictu res 1 Scroll until the picture yo u w ant to delete is highlighted in the center of the filmstrip. 2 Press Delete. 3 Press one of the following softkeys: q Delete — deletes the picture and any attached sound.
53 3 Pla ying Sound, Bursts, and Time-lapse Sequences T o play sound, Bur st and T ime- lapse, and Alb um sequen ces you ha ve to be vie wing the picture o n a full screen. Burst and T ime-lapse sequences need to b e collapsed in the filmst rip before play ing.
54 Magnifying Pictures The magnify feature lets you vie w a section of the curren t picture at two and four times the normal LCD size. 1 Scroll to view the picture you want to magnify . Use any of the three methods for scrolling described i n the “ V iew ing pictur es ” section on page 39.
55 3 Viewing Pictures on Y our T elevision The camera video-o ut feature lets yo u sho w the pictur es from the memory card on your tele vision. W ith video-out, the color LCD is disabled when the cam era is attached to the video cable. 1 T urn off your tele vision an d camera.

68 Folder and Fil e Naming Con ventions When you are us ing K OD AK-supplied host softw are and ar e connected to the camera or using a car d reader , it is possible to create folders and files, including picture files on the memory card. All filenames must follow the DOS 8-character format.
69 5 Naming Pictures Pictures taken using the DC290 camera are named P0XXXXXX.JPG or P0XXXXXX.TIF , where XXXXXX represents the picture number . Pictures are numbered in the order in which they are taken. Pictu re naming conflicts can occur when takin g pictures if you mo v e picture f iles between camera f olders.
