TS-590S CONTENTS I At the end of September , 2010, the TS -590S, a Kenwood HF band amateur ra dio transceiver was launched af ter the 7-year long si lence since the releas ing of TS-480S. As implied by this model n ame, TS-590S is th e “legitimate successor to th e TS-570S”.
II CONTENTS TS-590S TS-590S was planned as the “legitimate successor to th e TS-570S” after 14 years or more of tim e have elap sed since the fi rst market appeara nce of TS-570S in 1 996. TS-590S is ti tled with the 500s model number wit h the TS-570S but, nee dless to say , we started the development as a t otally new transceiver .
TS-590S CONTENTS 1 1 RECEPTION Receive performance is o ne of the key indicators that is used to evaluate a transceiver . And, above all, the cap ability to protect against i nterference fr om adjacent signals close to the target signal is of the utmost importance.
1 RECEPTION 2 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 1-1 Dual-m ode Conversion Freq uency Configuration First, let us begin with explanat ion about the up-conver sion pa th. In the up-conver sion pa th, double-hea ded arrows are sho wn at each st age pointing in both directions.
1 RECEPTION TS-590S CONTENTS 3 Figure 1-2 Block diagram: Down Conversion Figure 1-2 describes th e circuit configurat ion ar ound the first mixer o f the down-conversion path, showing the relation ships b etween frequencies up on receipt of a 14 MHz si gnal.
1 RECEPTION 4 CONTENTS TS-590S The receiver mixer circuit is a quad mixer consisting of four 2SK1740 JFET s. The mixer circuit achieves superio r characteristics th anks to the revision of I/O port matching and the optimizati on of biases. With the signal provided by the first local oscillator , the RX signal is converted to 1 1.
1 RECEPTION TS-590S CONTENTS 5 • Durin g the transmi ssion: The up-conversion conf iguration is always us ed in all modes an d bandwidths. During the transmission in SSB mo de, the pass ba ndwidt h is determ ined by the fil ter settin gs (digital filter of the DSP) selected in the menu mode.
1 RECEPTION 6 CONTENTS TS-590S Following is a grap h that provides th e comparis on between the performances of roofing filt ers. Figure 1-5 Comp arison of Bandp ass Characteristics of MCFs Figure 1-5.
1 RECEPTION TS-590S CONTENTS 7 Measurement Conditions: The abscissa axis sh ows the distance from the interfe ring signal. For example, it represents that at the point of 10 kHz the rece ive frequenc y is 14.200 MHz and two interfer ing signals of 14.
1 RECEPTION 8 CONTENTS TS-590S Difference of characteristics due to the pass bandwidth in the roofing filter can be vie wed in graphs in Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6. So, let’ s see the characteristics of the up-conversi on system in which the same front end configuration is used as previous mod els.
1 RECEPTION TS-590S CONTENTS 9 T ypical built-in RX auxili ary circuit s include the va riable p ass bandwidth circuit, notch filter and n oise blanker (NB). In modern HF transceivers, most of these auxiliar y circuits (=auxiliary functions) are made possible by an arithmetic process of the DS P .

4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 21 As for ADCs and DACs, the best combinati on of models are selected to suit the type of signal processed, especially f or the IF input sect ion, high-perform ance ADCs designed for high-end a udio with dynamic ran ge of 1 14 dB are used.
4 DSP 22 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-3 Control Block Diagram of IF-AGC In the attack control circuit, in addition to the n ormal fast gain shif t function, we have added a technology to cap ture the signal transfor mation in an overshoot fo rm and to apply moderate gain to the signal in order to le ssen the audible clicks.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 23 TS-590S also incorpora tes rich and powerfu l interference elimin ation functions that work within th e IF-AGC loop (Figure 4-3).
4 DSP 24 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-6 Result s of Amplitude and Frequen cy Analysis of the Digit al IF Filter (CW Mode) 0 Hz in the center that corr esponds to the pitch frequency The following table provides possible cho ices of the filters an d the default value (sh own in bold) for respective modes.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 25 The manual notch filter is a notch filter with a freq uency tha t can be shifted with th e notch knob. Th e auto notch filt er is a notch filter tha t automatical ly tracks a beat frequency with an adaptive filter technique. Bo th notch filters ha ve the atte nuation of more th an 60 dB at th e center frequen cy .
4 DSP 26 CONTENTS TS-590S There are two settings on the manual notch filter : Normal and Wide. Y ou can choose one of two bandwid ths for the notch filter (Fig ure 4-8).
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 27 For the demodulation of th e RX signal in SSB, CW , FSK and SSB-DA T A modes, w e have employed the proven PSN (Phase Sh ift Network) design again.
4 DSP 28 CONTENTS TS-590S Following is how the TX signal is processed. The audio signal captured from the microphone or an external terminal is first pro cessed by the bandwid th-limiting filter , mic.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 29 Beat cancel (BC), as it s name implies, is d esigned to cancel unpleasant beat interference. Like NR1 (line enhancer), BC uses adaptive filter technology . With this technology BC tracks and cancels a beat signal just like shapi ng a band eliminatio n filter .
4 DSP 30 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-10 shows how BC cancels beat signals, as monitored by an FFT analyzer . Notice how multiple beat s are clearly removed by BC.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 31 Figure 4-1 1 NB2: Inactive Figure 4-12 NB2: Active However , depending on the nature of the pulse noise , the noise blanke r cannot suppress the noi se effective ly . In such a case, by using other methods su ch as noise redu ction in conjunctio n, the reception cond itions may be improved.
4 DSP 32 CONTENTS TS-590S Unlike the conven tional noise reduct ion methods, the spectral subtraction m ethod of NR1 is a brand new approach of no ise reduction devel oped for the TS-590S.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 33 Figure 4-14 NR1 (Spectral Subtraction Method) (Inactive) Figure 4-15 NR1 (Spectral Subtraction Method) (Active) Audio spectrum components swamped by noise Audio spectrum comp.
4 DSP 34 CONTENTS TS-590S As a noise suppressi on process, the l ine enhancer method based on a DS P has been adopte d by many amateu r radio transceivers in rece nt years.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 35 NR2 is what is known as SP AC. It detect s periodic signals cont ained in th e RX signal and piec es together the d etected periodi c signals to prod uce output rece ive audio. As a resul t, only th e periodic signals in the re ceive audio emerge clearly .
4 DSP 36 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-19 NR2: Active TS-590S also incorporate s an AF-type sp eech processor . Though it is an AF type, th e speech processor provides sufficient compression through a unique sig nal processing technique.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 37 Figure 4-20 show s how the wavefo rm changes when the sp eech processor is to ggled between a ctive and inactive . Y ou ca n see that wh en the speech proce ssor is activated, th e differences in amplitud e are averaged and the talk power is increased.
