6 • Continued use of irregular shape discs (heart-shape, octagonal, etc.) can damage the unit. • The Macrovision’ s copy protection system is applied to this unit. If you make a copy on your VCR from a disc that is recorded this copy protection signal, the copy cannot be played back normally .
7 About audio formats Some audio formats used on discs are described belo w: • Linear PCM Uncompressed digital audio, the same format used on CDs and most studio masters. D VD supports 2-channels at sampling rates of 48/96 kHz and quantization of 16/20/24 bits.

15 7 Guidelines to select the monitor type Selectable types: 4:3 LB , 16:9 WIDE, 4:3 PS • 4:3 LB (Letter Box) : Select when viewing on a TV whose aspect ratio is 4:3. While viewing a wide screen picture, the black bars appear on the top and the bottom of the screen.
16 7 Guidelines to select the output signal type Selectable types: STREAM/PCM, PCM ONL Y , DOLBY DIGIT AL/PCM • STREAM/PCM: Select when connecting an amplifier or a decoder compatible with DTS, Dolby Digital and MPEG Multichannel.

19 T o turn off the unit automatically (Auto Power Off) Using the Auto Power Off function, the unit automatically turns itself off if no sound comes in f or more than 3 minutes when the D VD player or “T APE” is selected as the source.
20 Adjusting the Volume Y ou can adjust the volume le vel only while the unit is turned on. • The volume le vel has no effect on recording. On the remote contr ol: T o incr ease the volume, press VOLUME +. T o decr ease the volume, press V OLUME – .
21 Adjusting the T one Y ou can adjust the bass and treble sounds as you like. • This function also affects the sound from headphones. • This function affect neither recording nor the signals output through the D VD OPTICAL DIGIT AL OUT terminal. • There is a time limit in doing the following steps.
22 Changing the Display Illumination Y ou can change the illumination color and brightness of the electronic swing panel and the display window . T o select the illumination color Y ou can set the illumination color to your preference.
23 Adjusting the Audio Input Level If the sound from the component connected to this unit is too loud or is not loud enough when changing from another source to “ A UX/MD ” (without changing the v olume lev el), you can change the audio input le vel t hr ough the A UX/M D jacks.

25 Setting the AM T uner Inter val Spacing Some countries space AM stations 9 kHz apart, and some countries use 10 kHz spacing. When shipped, the built-in AM tuner is set to 9 kHz spacing.
26 Presetting Stations Y ou can preset 30 FM and 15 AM stations manually . In some cases, test frequencies hav e been already stored for the tuner since the factory examined the tuner preset function before shipment. This is not a malfunction. Y ou can preset the stations you want into memory by follo wing the presetting method.

28 IMPOR T ANT : Before performing any operations for D VD, SVCD and VCD, make sure of the follo wing: • Check the connection with the TV . • T urn on the TV and select the correct input on the TV to vie w the pictures or on-screen menus/indications on the TV screen.

31 T o show the on-screen indication Y ou can show the follo wing information on the TV while playing back a disc. On the remote contr ol ONL Y : T o sho w the on-screen indication, press ON SCREEN while playing a disc. Ex.: When SVCD or VCD with the PBC function is a playing source.

33 T o show the on-screen indication Y ou can show the follo wing information on the TV while playing back a disc. On the remote contr ol ONL Y : T o sho w the on-screen indication, press ON SCREEN while playing a MP3 disc.
34 On the main unit: Forward search T o fast-f orward the chapter or track, press and hold ¢ while playing a disc. • If you keep holding down the b utton for a certain period of time, the search speed increases. Reverse search T o fast-r ev erse the chapter or track, press and hold 4 while playing a disc.
35 T o cancel the PBC function: 1 Press 7 during playback. Playback stops. 2 Press the number buttons to select the track number you want to play . Playback starts from the selected track without the PBC function. T o acti vate the PBC function again, press 7 once or twice to stop playback completely , then press D VD SELECT 3 .
36 F or SVCD, VCD , or A udio CD: Ex.: Dur ing VCD playbac k. • ALL: All tracks on the disc or all tracks in the program will be repeated. •1 : Current track will be repeated. F or MP3 disc: Ex.: Dur ing playbac k. • ALL: All groups on the disc or all groups in the program will be repeated.

50 Before Y ou Start Recording on a T ape • It may be unla wful to record or pla y back cop yrighted material without the consent of the copyright owner . • The recording level is automatically set correctly , so it is not af fected by the volume le vel and the tone lev el adjustment—“B ASS” and “TREBLE” (see pages 20 and 21).
51 • When recording from an DVD, the current title or chapter number does not appear on the display . After recording, both the D VD player and the cassette deck stop automatically . T o stop r ecor ding, press 7 . When recording fr om some D VDs which have their menu Playback may not go further from the point where the menu is shown.

54 Singing Along (Karaoke) Y ou can enjoy singing along (Karaoke) by using the microphone. IMPOR T ANT : • Always set the MIC V OL control to MIN when connecting or disconnecting the microphone. • When you do not use the microphone, keep the microphone unconnected.

56 Using the setting menu, you can store the initial selection for audio languages (sound) and subtitle languages for D VD playback as well as other settings.
57 Changing the Initial Language Settings On the LANGU A GE menu, you can select the f ollowing initial languages. • MENU LANGU A GE: Select the initial language for the D VD disc menu. 59 Limitting Playback of DVD—Parental Lock Using this function, you can restrict playback of D VD containing violent scenes (and those not suitable for your family members). • This function is only possible for the D VDs containing such rating lev el information—Level 1 (most r estrictiv e) to Lev el 8 (least restrictiv e).

64 Using the Sleep Timer W ith the Sleep T imer, you can fall aslee p to your fav orite music or radio program. • Y ou can set the Sleep T imer when the unit is turned on. How the Sleep Timer actually works The unit automatically turns of f after the specified length of time passes.
65 Using A V COMPU LINK Control System The A V COMPU LINK control system allows you to use JVC’ s TV with simple operations. T o use A V COMPU LINK control system, you need to connect this unit and a TV through the A V COMPU LINK terminals.
66 Handling discs • Remove the disc from its case by holding it at the edge while pressing the center hole lightly . • Do not touch the shiny surface of the disc, or bend the disc. • Put the disc back in its case after use to prev ent warping. • Be careful not to scratch the surface of the disc when placing it back in its case.
67 If you are having a problem with your unit, check this list f or a possible solution before calling for service. If you cannot solve the problem from the hints gi ven here, or the unit has been physically damaged, call a qualified person, such as your dealer , for service.
68 Symptom No picture appears on the screen. Picture does not fit the tele vision screen. No sound is heard. No subtitle appears on the display though you ha ve selected the initial subtitle language. Audio language is different from the one you hav e selected as the initial audio language.
