2 Introduction % Important cautions Installation of the system • Select a place which is le vel, dry and neither too hot nor too cold; between 5°C and 35°C (41°F and 95°F). • Leave sufficient distance between the syst em and the TV . • Do not use the system in a place su bject to vibration.
3 About discs This system has been designed to play back the following discs: D VD V ideo (D VD), V ideo CD (VCD), Super V ideo CD (SVCD), Audio CD, CD-R and CD-R W . • This system can also play back MP3 and JPEG files recorded on CD-Rs and CD-R Ws.
About discs 4 IMPORTANT Before playing a disc, make sure of the follo wing; • Check the connection with the TV. • Turn on your TV and select the correct input mode on the TV to view the pictures or on-screen information on the TV screen. • For DVD playback, you can change the initial setting to your preference.

8 Getting started • Do not connect th e A C power cor d until al l other connections ha ve been made. • Since dif ferent components often hav e dif ferent terminal names, carefully read the instr uctions supplied with the components y ou are going to connect.
Getting started 9 Connecting the FM and AM antennas Make sure the antenna conductors do not touch an y other terminals, connecting cords and power cords. Getting started 10 Connecting the powered subwoofer Connect the supplied po wered subwoofer (SP-PW A85/SP-PW A55) using the system cord (supplied). • Connect the system cord by matching the 5 marks on the plugs to the ones on the center unit and po wered subwoofer .
Getting started 11 7 Assembling the satellite speakers (TH-A85 only) Each speaker (excep t the center speaker) has been di vided into two parts for shipment. Before connecting the satellite speakers, fi rst assemble them by follo wing the procedure belo w .
Getting started 12 7 Connecting the satellite (front, center, surround) speakers (TH-A85) Each speaker (SP-THA85F) can be used as a front or surround speaker .
Getting started 13 7 Connecting the satellite (front, center, surround) speakers (TH-A55) Be sure to identify each speaker (SP-THA55C/SP-THA55F/SP-THA55S) and connect them to the corresponding terminals of the powered subw oofer .
Getting started 14 Connecting to an analog component Y ou can enjoy the sound of an analog component such as a VCR, TV , or Cassette recorder with this system.
Getting started 15 Connecting the power cord Make sure that all connections hav e been completed, before plugging in the power cords of the center unit and po wered subwoofer . CAUTION • Disconnect the power cord before cleaning or moving the system.

Getting started 17 For TV operations Y ou can operate your TV using the remote control supplied with this system. • Refer also to the instruction manuals supplied with your TV . % To set the manufact urer’s code Y ou can operate a JVC TV without setting the remote control signal.
Getting started 18 4 Press number buttons (1-9, 0) to enter the manufacturer ’ s code (2 digits). Examples: For a GI Jerrold pro duct: Press 0 , then 1 . For a Son y product: Press 2 , then 0 . 5 Release F VCR/DBS. 6 Try operating your DBS tuner or CATV converter by pressing F VCR/DBS.

Basic operations 20 On the remote control: Press one of the source selecting buttons (DVD, FM/AM, VCR or DBS). DV D : T o play back a disc (D VD, V ideo CD etc.). ( A pg. 23, 25) FM/AM : T o tune in an FM or AM station. ( A pg. 27) Each time you press the button, the band alternates between FM and AM.
Basic operations 21 Y ou can dim the indications on the display window and the illumination lamp le vel on the center unit. On the remote control: Press DIMMER. Each time you press the button, the brightness le vel changes as follo ws; ] OFF ] DIMMER1 ] DIMMER2 ] (back to th e beginnin g) • OFF: Returns to t he normal le vel.
Basic operations 22 Y ou can adjust each enhancement lev el from the front speakers within the range from –10 to +10. On the remote control: Press BASS +/ – for bass sound. Press TREBLE +/ – for treble sound. NOTE • You can also make adjustments using the choice menu shown on the TV screen.

Playback 24 NOTE • You can check playback information on the display window and the TV screen. ( A pg. 33 ) • Some tracks on an MP3 disc may be skipped or may not be played back normally. • When you play back a JPEG disc, press buttons after the whole picture appears on the TV screen.

IMPORTANT Before using the remote control for the following operation; • Press FM/AM . Some countries space AM stations 9 kHz apart, and other countries use 10 kHz spacing.
T uner operations 28 2 Press MEMORY. The channel number position starts flashing on the display windo w for about 5 seconds. While the channel number position is flashing: 3 Press number button(s) (1-10, +10) to select a channel number. The channel number and the CH indicator start flashing.

Creating realistic sound fields 30 Creating sound field All Channel Stereo All Channel Stereo (ALL CH ST .) mode can reproduce a lar ger stereo sound fi eld using all the connected (and acti vated) speakers. All Channel Stereo can be used while reproducing 2 channel stereo source.

Advanced operations 35 Locating a desired scene using a Video CD/SVCD menu with PBC A V ideo CD or SVCD recorded with PBC has its ow n menus such as a list of contained songs.

Advanced operations 39 When playing back a D VD (or SVCD) containing subtitles in se veral languages, you can select the subtitle language to be displayed on the TV screen. When a D VD contains audio (sound track) in sev eral languages, you can also select the language (sound track) to listen to.

Advanced operations 42 Changing the VFP setting The VFP (V ideo Fine Processor) function enables you to adjust the picture character according to the type of programming, picture tone or personal preferen ce. NOTE Before you start operation; • The VFP setting screen disappears if no operations are done for more than about 10 seconds.

46 Setting DVD preferences Y ou can adjust the initial settings for DVD playback according to your preference or needs using 5 choice menus show n on the TV screen. • Adjustments are possible only when selecting D VD as the source. • T urn on your TV and select the correct input mode on the TV .

55 English A V COMPU LINK remote control system The A V COMPU LINK remote control system allo ws you to operate JVC TVs and VCRs through the center unit. This system is equipped with the A V COMPU LINK-III, which adds a function to operate JVC’ s video components via the video components terminals.
