6 Putting batteries in the remote control Before using the remote control, put tw o supplied batter ies first. 1 Press and slide the battery cover on the bac k of the remote control. 2 Insert batteries. Make sure to match the polarity: (+) to (+) and (–) to (–).

15 USB connection This receiver is equipped with a USB terminal on the front panel. Y ou can connect your PC to this terminal and enjoy sound reproduced through your PC . When you connect y our PC for the first time , follow the procedure below . • Remember you cannot send any signal or data to y our PC from this receiv er.
16 Basic operations 2 Select the source to play On the front panel: T urn SOURCE SELECTOR until the sour ce name y ou want appears on the display . The source lamp corresponding to the selected source lights in red. • As you turn SOURCE SELECTOR, the source changes as f ollo ws: D VR/D VD: Select this for the D VD recorder or D VD play er .
17 3 Adjust the volume To increase the v olume , turn MASTER V OLUME control c lockwise (or press V OLUME + on the remote control). To decrease the v olume , turn MASTER V OLUME control counter cloc kwise (or press V OLUME – on the remote control). • When you adjust the v olume, the volume le vel indication appears on the displa y for a while.
18 Selecting the digital decode mode This receiver automatically detects the incoming digital signal for mat when “HDMI” or “DIGIT AL ” is selected in “A UDIO INPUT” setting (see page 17). When “HDMI” or “DIGIT AL ” is selected, the digital decode mode is set to “DGTL (digital) AUT O .
19 Basic adjustment of auto memory This receiv er memor izes sound settings for each source: • when you turn off the power , and • when you change the source . When you change the source , the memorized settings for the newly selected source are automatically recalled.
20 To obtain the best possible sound eff ect from Surround/DSP modes (see pages 33 to 37), you need to set up the speak er and subwoof er information after all the connections are completed. F rom pages 20 to 26, how to set speakers and other basic items of the receiv er are explained.
21 Speakers (channels) number and the size Y ou can find how each of the speak er size is defined according to the number of connected speakers (speak er channel “ch” number) y ou select. • Subwoof er is counted as 0.1 channel. The size of connected speak ers CH FL/FR C SL/SR SB SUBWFR 2.

25 Using the Midnight mode —MIDNIGHT MODE Y ou can enjoy a po werful sound at night using the Midnight mode. When the Midnight mode is activ ated, the MIDNIGHT indicator lights up on the display . MIDNIGHT < OFF > Select when you w ant to enjoy surround with its full dynamic range .
26 Setting the Audio delay level —AUDIO DELA Y Synchronization between audio and video reproduction can be possibly disturbed because video signal decoding is time- consuming compared to the audio signal decoding. On this setting, you can correct synchronization between video and audio signals by dela ying the audio signal timing.
27 Sound adjustments Y ou can make sound adjustment to y our preference after completing basic setting. Basic adjustment items Y ou can adjust the follo wing items. See pages in parentheses f or details. •Y ou cannot select the items which is not av ailable with the current setting.

29 Adjusting the bass sounds Reinforcing the bass—BASS BOOST Y ou can boost the bass lev el—Bass Boost. • Once you hav e made an adjustment, it is memorized for each source. B BOOST < ON > Select to boost the bass lev el. The B.BOOST indicator lights up on the displa y .
30 Adjusting the panorama control for Pro Logic IIx Music and Pro Logic II Music—P ANORAMA This setting is av ailable when Pro Logic IIx Music or Pro Logic II Music is activated f or the analog or digital 2-channel sound signal. To activate Pro Logic IIx Music or Pro Logic II Music , see page 37.
31 T uner operations T uning in to stations manually From the remote control ONL Y : 1 Press FM or AM to select the band. The last receiv ed station of the selected band is tuned in. 2 Press repeatedly or hold TUNING 9 or ( TUNING until the station y ou want is tuned in.
32 3 Press the numeric b uttons (1 – 10, +10) to select a channel number while the c hannel n umber position is flashing. •F or channel number 5, press 5. •F or channel number 15, press +10, then 5. •F or channel number 30, press +10, +10, then 10.
33 Creating realistic sound fields Reproducing theater ambience In a movie theater , many speakers are located on the walls to reproduce impressiv e multi-channel sound, reaching you from all directions. With these many speakers , sound localization and sound mov ement can be expressed.
34 DTS Neo:6 DTS Neo:6 is another conv ersion method to create 6-channel (plus subwoof er) from analog/digital 2-channel software by using the high precision digital matrix decoder used for DTS-ES Matrix 6.1ch. • This receiver provides the f ollowing DTS Neo:6 modes— Neo:6 Cinema (NEO:6 CINEMA) and Neo:6 Music (NEO:6 MUSIC).
35 Introducing the DSP modes The sound heard in a concer t hall, club , etc. consists of direct sound and indirect sound—early reflections and reflections from behind. Direct sounds reach the listener directly without any reflection. On the other hand, indirect sounds are dela yed by the distances of the ceiling and walls.
36 Using the Surround/DSP modes Av ailable Surround/DSP modes v ar y depending on the speaker settings and the incoming signals. See the table below . • The numbers inside the parentheses follo wing the incoming signal type indicate the number of the front channels and that of the surround channels.

40 Y ou can use the supplied remote control to operate not onl y this receiver but also other JVC pr oducts. • Refer also to the man uals supplied with the other products. – Some JVC VCRs can accept two types of the control signals—remote codes “A” and “B.

45 Tr oubleshooting Use this chart to help you solve daily operational prob lems. If there are any prob lems you cannot solv e, contact your JVC’ s service center. PROBLEM The power does not come on. The receiv er tur ns off (enters standby mode). “O VER HEA T” flashes on the displa y , then the receiv er tur ns off.
46 Remote control does not operate as y ou intend. Remote control does not work. Continuous hiss or buzzing during FM reception. Occasional crac king noise dur ing FM reception. The remote control is not ready f or your intended operation. There is an obstruction hiding the remote sensor on the receiv er.
