These quick setup pages will pro vide you, in three easy steps, with the basic inf ormation you need to begin using your ne w television right aw ay . If you ha ve questions, or f or more detailed information on any of these steps, please consult other sections of this manual.
Before y ou can operate your remote control, you first need to install the batteries (included). Slide the cov er on the back of the remote down tow ards the bottom of the remote control. Inser t two batter ies (included) carefully noting the “+” and “–” markings, placing the “–” end in the unit first.

Connect it to the LEFT A UDIO INPUT on the rear of the TV . • Use the S-Video connection if possible f or superior picture quality . • Y our VCR must be tur ned on to view premium cable channels .

19 Quic k Setup Connections By connecting your A V Receiver to y our television's V1 Smar t Input, you can watch picture sources from many diff erent devices , without having to change or use the other input connections on your TV . This allows you to free up the other input connections so y ou can connect more devices to y our television.
When you turn your tele vision on for the first time the inter active plug-in menu will appear . The plug-in menu helps you to get y our TV ready to use by letting y ou set your pref erences for: • The language in which you w ant the onscreen menus to appear .
T o set your clock manually (without using the XDS signal), choose MANU AL. Quic k Setup Plug-In Menu 22 In auto tuner setup , the TV automatically scans through all a vailable channels , memorizing the active ones and skipping o ver b lank ones or channels with weak signals. This means when you scan (using the C HANNEL +/– buttons) you will receiv e only clear , active channels.
Y ou can program y our remote to operate your cab le box, satellite receiv er , VCR or D VD play er by using the instructions and codes listed below . If the equipment does not respond to any of the codes listed below or to the code search function, use the remote control supplied by the manuf acturer.
The remote control is programmed with VCR codes for pow er on/off, pla y , stop , fast-f orward, rewind, pause , record, channel up/down operation. 1) Find the VCR brand from the list of codes shown belo w . 2) Slide the first 2-wa y selector switch to “TV” and the other 2-wa y selector switch to “VCR”.
The remote control is programmed with D VD codes f or power on/off , play , stop, f ast-forw ard, rewind, pre vious/next chapter , tra y open/close, and still/pause operation. 1) Find the D VD pla yer brand from the list of codes sho wn below . 2) Slide the first 2-wa y selector switch to “TV” and the other 2-wa y selector switch to “D VD”.
Remote Pr ogramming 26 Cable/Satellite Sear ch Codes Function 1) Slide the first 2-W ay Mode Selector s witch to CA TV . 2) Press and hold down the P OWE R button, then press the R ETURN +/TV button for more than three seconds. 3) Release the R ETURN +/TV button, then release the P OWER button.
T o bring up the onscreen menu , press the M ENU b utton on the remote control. The item that appears in green is the one currently selected. If you use the Menu b utton on the TV’ s front panel instead of the remote, an additional menu screen sho wing INPUT and ASPECT will appear between INITIAL SETUP and PICTURE ADJUST .
Y our television comes with JVC’ s onscreen menu system. The onscreen men us let you make adjustments to your tele vision’ s operation simply and quickly . Examples of the onscreen menus are shown on the ne xt page. Detailed explanations on using each menu f ollow later in this guide.

Initial Setup 30 A uto T uner Setup The auto tuner setup function is described on page 22 as the interactive plug-in menu. If you need to run the auto tuner setup again, follow the steps belo w .
When a viewer attempts to w atch a guarded channel, the follo wing message appears: T o watch a channel that you ha ve lock ed, enter the Lock Code using the 10 ke y pad. If the wrong code is entered, the message “INV ALID LOCK CODE!” will flash on the screen.

Initial Setup 34 Line up the cursor in the column (TV PG, TV G, etc.) with the content ro w (V/FV , S, etc.) and press the π † or √ ® to mov e the cursor to the correct location. Press O K to turn the locking feature on or off . An item is locked if the icon appears instead of a “—”.
Initial Setup ❏ NR – Not Rated This is a film which has no rating. In many cases these films were imported from countr ies which do not use the MP AA ratings system. Other NR films ma y be from amateur producers who didn’t intend to hav e their film widely released.

Channel guard and V -Chip settings are protected by a f our-digit lock code. Y our TV comes preset with a lock code of “0000”. Y ou may change the code to any f our-digit number you wish.

XDS ID Display provides a channel’ s call letters, the network’ s name, and e ven a program name. The XDS ID inf ormation is provided by the broadcaster .
This feature is used if y ou hav e connected an A V Receiver to your tele vision. By turning this feature on, y our television can automatically detect the signal source from y our components that are connected to your A V Receiver .
Initial Setup 41 This function allows y ou to set whether the signal, which comes from VIDEO-1 input ter minal, should be output from MONIT OR OUT ter minal.

MTS technology allo ws sev eral audio signals to be broadcast at once, giving y ou a choice in what you wish to hear with a TV program. In addition to mono or stereo sound, an MTS broadcast ma y also include a second audio program (SAP) .
Cloc k/Timer s 45 Set Clock The set clock function is described on page 21 as the interactiv e plug-in menu. Y ou can choose to set the clock automatically , or manually .
The on/off timer lets you progr am your tele vision to tur n itself on or off. Y ou can use it as an alarm to wake up , to help you remember important programs, or as a deco y when you’ re not home.
Y our television has tw o kinds of screen: SPLIT (2 channels), and INDEX (12 channels). T wo channels (or input) will now appear onscreen. The channel (or input) you were w atching before pressing S PLIT will appear on the left, the new channel will appear on the right.
Cable Bo x Note: The 2–T uner Multi Screen function may not operate when used with certain cable box es. This is because while some models of cable bo xes ma y receive up to 181 channels, and ma y only send the signal from one channel to your tele vision.
Button Functions 49 T ur ns the TV on or off. Press the P OWER button Use the number buttons on the remote control to mo ve directly to a specific channel. The return+/TV button has three functions: Return - Returns to the channel viewed just bef ore the channel currently onscreen. Return+ - Lets you progr am a specific channel to retur n to while scanning through the channels using the CH+ and CH– buttons .
The V ideo status button gives y ou a choice of four TV picture display settings, including a display of y our own pref erences. Standard - Resets the picture displa y to the factory settings. Dynamic - Gives a vivid picture with better contr ast when viewing in a brightly lit room.
Button Functions 52 The Sleep Timer can turn the TV off f or you after you f all asleep . Program it to work in intervals of 15 minutes, f or a total time of up to 180 minutes.
This feature will help y ou adjust the picture you are w atching to give you the best possib le picture quality . REGULAR - The regular ratio is used when you w ant to watch a 4:3 broadcast or recorded program without modifying the original picture to fit the dimensions of your 16:9 screen.
