– 6 – Getting Started Unpacking After unpacking, check to be sure that you hav e all the follo wing items. The number in the parentheses indicates the quantity of the pieces supplied. • AM loop antenna (1) • FM antenna (1) • Remote control (1) • Batteries (2) If any is missing, consult your dealer immediately .
– 7 – 1 Connect the AM loop antenna to the AM LOOP terminals as illustrated. 2 T ur n the AM loop antenna until you have the best reception. T o connect an outdoor AM antenna When r ece ption is poor, connect a single vinyl-cov ered wire to the AM EXT ter minal and extend it horizontally .
– 8 – Connecting Other Equipment Y ou can connect the following equipment to this unit: • Cassette deck — used as a playback and recording device. By using the cassette deck, y ou can record an y source played back on this unit. • Audio equipment with an optical digital output terminal — used only as a dig ital pla yback device.
– 9 – NO W , y ou can plug in the unit and other connected equipment FIN ALL Y! When connecting the A C po wer cord into a wall outlet, the unit automatically starts display demonstration. • Pressing TITLE on the unit while the unit is turned on, shows the title entry screen (if there is no MD in the MD loading slot).

– 12 – How these settings work • When selecting “DEMO”: Display demonstration starts. If you do not cancel the display demonstration by pressing ENTER/DEMO, display demonstration automatically starts in the follo wing cases: – 2 min utes after the unit is tur ned off.
– 13 – Changing the Display Brightness and Contrast T o change the brightness Y ou can change the display br ightness w hether the unit is turned on or in standby mode. Y ou can set and memorize the display br ightness setting each f or po wer -on time and f or po wer-of f (standb y) time .

– 15 – Adjusting the Volume Y ou can adjust the volume level onl y w hile the unit is turned on. Turn V OLUME clockwise to increase the v olume or counterclockwise to decrease it. When using the remote control, press V OLUME + to increase the volume or press VOLUME – to decrease it.
– 16 – Creating Y our Own Sound Mode — MANUAL Mode Y ou can create and store y our o wn sound mode. • There is a time limit in doing the following steps. If the setting is canceled bef ore y ou finish, start from step 1 again. On the unit ONL Y : 1 Press SOUND repeatedly until “MANU AL ” a ppears in the main displa y .

– 18 – T uning in a Station On the unit: 1 Pr ess FM/AM. The unit automatically turns on and tunes in the pre viously tuned station (either FM or AM–MW/L W). • Each time you press the button, the band alternates between FM and AM. 2 T une into a station.
– 19 – T o pr eset sta tions man ually — Manual Pr esetting 1 T une in the station y ou w ant to pr eset. • See “T uning in a Station” on page 18. 2 Press SET . The current preset number starts flashing. 3 Select a preset number . On the unit: Push the joy control rightward ( ¢ ) or leftward ( 4 ).
– 20 – Mor e a bout RDS • Not all FM stations provide RDS signals, nor do all RDS stations provide the same ser vices. If in doubt, check with local radio stations for details on RDS in your area. • RDS ma y not wor k corr ectly if the recei ved station is not transmitting the signals properly or if the signal strength is weak.
– 21 – Switching to a Program T ype of Y our Choice T emporarily The EON function allows the unit to switch temporarily to a br oadcast pr ogram of your c hoice (T A, NEWS, and/or INFO) fr om a dif ferent station except w hen y ou ar e listening to a non-RDS stations — some FM stations and AM (MW/L W) stations.
– 22 – How the EON function actually works: CASE 1 If there is no station broadcasting the program y ou have selected The unit continues tuning in the current station. « When a station starts broadcasting the program you have selected, the unit automatically s witches to the station.

– 25 – Loading CDs 1 Press one of the open/close buttons ( 0 ) f or the disc tray (CD 1 to CD 3) you w ant to load a CD onto. The unit automatically turns on and the selected disc tray comes out. The corresponding CD number lamp (CD 1 to CD 3) lights.
– 26 – T o stop playback for a moment Press CD # / 8 . T o resume play , press CD # / 8 a gain. T o locate a particular point in a track during play On the unit: Push the joy control upw ard ( ¡ ) or do wnward ( 1 ). • Upward ( ¡ ): F ast-forwards the tracks.
– 27 – T o check the pr ogram contents Before playing, you can check the program contents by pressing ¢ or 4 on the remote control. • ¢ : Shows the programed tracks in the programed order . • 4 : Shows them in the re verse order . T o modify the pr ogram Before playing, you can erase the last programed track by pressing CANCEL.

– 29 – Playing Back the Entire MD — Normal Play Y ou can play an MD. 1 Insert an MD into the MD loading slot. The MD is pulled in automatically . 2 Press MD # / 8 . MD pla yback star ts fr om the f irst track. T o stop during pla y , press 7 . T o r emo ve the disc, press 0 for the MD recorder .
– 30 – Programing the Playing Order of the T racks — Program Play Y ou can arrange the order in which the tracks play before you start playing. Y ou can program up to 32 tracks. 1 Load an MD. • If the current pla ying sour ce is not the MD r ecorder , press MD # / 8 , then 7 bef ore g oing to the ne xt ste p.
– 31 – Playing at Random — Random Play The tracks of the loaded MD will play at random. 1 Load an MD. • If the cur rent pla ying source is not the MD recorder , press MD # / 8 , then 7 bef ore g oing to the next ste p.

– 33 – Before Y ou Start Recording • It should be noted that it may be unla wful to re-record pre-recorded tapes, records, or discs without the consent of the owner of cop yright in the sound or video recording, broadcast or cable programme and in an y literar y , dramatic, m usical, or artistic embodied therein.
– 34 – Recording Any Sound Source — Standard Recording The following r ecording method can be applied to any sound source. 1 Insert a recordable MD in the MD loading slot. 2 Select the source. • When recording a CD: Press CD 1, CD 2, or CD 3 to select a disc you want to record from, then 7 .
– 35 – T o record a single tr ack dur ing pla y or pause Press CD 3 MD while playing back or pausing a CD track you want to record. The playback of that CD track is stopped, and the same track star ts pla ying fr om the be ginning again. This time, the MD recorder starts recording the CD track.
– 36 – Recording FM/AM (MW/L W) Broadcasts — Monaural Recording and Stereo Recording When recording FM/AM (MW/L W) br oadcasts, y ou can select one of the two recording methods — Monaur al (Long) Recording and Stereo (Normal) Recording. • Monaural (Long) Recording — Records both stereo program and monaural program in monaural.
– 37 – 4 When selecting “SOUND SYNC”: Start pla yback on the e xter nal equipment. The recording lamp stops flashing and remains lit, and recording starts automatically . When selecting “STEREO”: 1) Press MD # / 8 . The recording lamp stops flashing and remain lit, and recording starts.

– 40 – 5 Press SET when y ou find the point wher e you want to divide the track. The MD recorder repeats the selected point — a 3- second per iod f ollowing the di viding point. • If the di viding point is sa tisf actory , g o to step 7. • If the di viding point is not satisfactory , go to the next step.
– 41 – 5 Pr ess SET . • If you ha ve selected wrong tracks, press CANCEL, then select the correct tracks. 6 Pr ess ENTER/DEMO to finish the editing pr ocedure. 7 Pr ess 0 for the MD r ecorder to eject the MD. “WRITING” appears while the editing you ha ve made is being recorded on the MD.

– 43 – ALL ERASE Function This function allo ws y ou to erase all the tr acks on an MD . • T o stop any time during editing process, press EDIT .

– 45 – Assigning Titles to an MD Y ou can assign a name to each MD and to each track. Once a title is assigned, it is displayed for your confirmation. Each title can be composed of up to 64 characters, and can be input using alphabetic characters (uppercase and lowercase), symbols and n umerals.
– 46 – 6 Input a character . • Ex. When entering “H” 1) Push the joy contr ol hor izontally ( 4 / ¢ ) and v ertically ( 1 / ¡ ) to until “H” is selected. 2) Press SET . The selected character is entered, and the character entry position moves to the next.
– 47 – Changing the Title Y ou can make a correction or change the title. 1 Follow steps 1 to 4 of page 45. 2 Push the joy control horizontally ( 4 / ¢ ) and vertically ( 1 / ¡ ) to select the character you want to corr ect. • Make sur e tha t the character y ou w ant to change is flashing.

– 51 – There are three timers av ailable — Recording Timer , Dail y T imer, and Sleep Timer . Before using these timers, you need to set the clock built in the unit. (See page 11.) Using Recording Timer W ith Recor ding T imer, you can make an unattended recording.

– 55 – Maintenance T o get the best performance of the unit, keep y our discs and mec hanism c lean. General Notes In g eneral, you will have the best perf ormance b y keeping your CDs, MDs and the mechanism clean. • Store CDs and MDs in their cases, and keep them in cabinets or on shelves.
– 56 – MD Disc T ypes There are two types of MDs: Pr emastered (pr erecorded) and Recordable (b lank). Pr emastered MDs Premastered MDs, which ha ve been recorded at music studio, can be pla yed bac k like regular CDs. On an MD of this type , data is recorded as the presence or absence of tiny pits.
– 57 – Sound Skip Guard Memory The big gest w eakness of discs is their susceptibility to vibra tion. The “Sound Skip Guard Memor y” has been developed to cope with this weakness. W ith this function, a fe w seconds of signals read by the optical read head from the MD are first stor ed in memory before being r eproduced as audio signals.
