3 Overview Overview IOGEAR’ s new MiniView™ Extreme Multimedia KVMP Switch brings e xtra v alue to conv entional KVM switches by offering USB peripheral sharing capabilities, audio and microphone support, and multi-platform support for Mac, Sun, USB and PS/2.
4 Features Features • Multi functional switch allows multiple USB or PS/2 (additional cables needed) computers to share one USB console and two USB peripheral devices such as printers and scanners, .
5 System Requirements • Computers with USB or PS/2 connections (additional cables needed for PS/2 computers) • Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP • Mac OS 8.
Front Vie w 1. Port Selection Buttons Pressing the port selection buttons to access the computer connected to its corresponding port. Pressing Buttons 1 and 2 simulta- neously for 2 seconds performs a keyboard and mouse reset. Pressing Buttons 3 and 4 simulta- neously for 2 seconds starts Auto Scan Mode .
USB Peripheral Selected LEDs: Lights to indicate that the computer attached to its corresponding port is the one that has access to the USB peripherals.
Back View 1. Console Audio Jacks The cables from your microphone and speakers plug in here. Each jack is marked with an appropriate icon to indicate itself.
in here. Each CPU por t is comprised of a microphone jack, speaker jac k, and KVM data connector . Note: The shape of these 15-pin KVM data connectors has been specifically modified so that only KVM cables designed to work with this switch can plug in (see the Cables section for details).
Make sure that power to all the devices you will be connecting up have been turned off. Y ou must unplug the power cords of an y computers that hav e the K eyboard P ow er On function.
11 Installation Setup and Installation Plug your USB ke yboard and USB mouse into the USB P orts located on the unit’s front panel. Plug your monitor into the Console monitor por t located on the unit’ s rear panel.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for any other computers you are connecting up. Plug the power adapter cab le into the switch’ s Po wer Jac k, then plug the power adapter into an A C pow er source.
13 Operation Hot Plugging The MiniView™ Extreme supports USB hot plugging – components can be removed and added back into the installation by unplugging their cables from the CPU ports without the need to shut the unit down.
14 Operation Port ID Numbering Each CPU port on the Miniview™ Extreme switch is assigned a port number (1 or 2 for the GCS1732; 1 to 4 for the GCS1734). The por t numbers are marked on the rear panel of the s witch. The P or t ID of a computer is derived from the CPU port number it is connected to.
15 Operation Basic Hotkeys to switch ports The most basic hotkey operation allows you to hotkey switch the KVM focus and USB peripheral access from the port that currently has the KVM focus to the next port on the installation (1 to 2; 2 to 1 for the GCS1732; 1 to 2; 2 to 3; 3 to 4; 4 to 1 for the GCS1734), without having to invoke Hotkey Mode.
16 Operation Invoking Hotkey Mode T o inv oke Hotke y Mode, do the following: 1. Press and hold down the Num Lock key 2. Press and release the minus [–] key 3. Release the Num Lock key Note: 1. The minus key must be released within one half second, otherwise Hotkey invocation is canceled.
17 OSD Operation Operation When Hotkey Mode is active, ordinary keyboard and mouse functions are suspended - only Hotkey compliant keystrokes and mouse clicks (described in the sections that follow), can be input. At the conclusion of some hotkey operations, you automatically exit Hotkey Mode.
18 Operation Switch the KVM focus to another computer and let USB peripherals remain on the current computer: Y ou can bring only the KVM focus (asynchronous s witching, without changing the USB de vice access) to any computer with the following hotkey combination: 1.
19 Operation Audio Port Selection Audio ports are switched along with the console port. When you s witch console to any computer , the audio por ts will be switched sim ultaneously . Auto Scan Mode The MiniView™ Extreme’ s Auto Scan feature automatically cycles through the computer ports at regular 5 second intervals.
20 Alternate Hotkey Invocation Keys and Alternative Basic Hotkey An alternate set of Hotkey Invocation keys is provided in case the default set conflicts with programs running on the computers. T o switch to the alternate Hotke y Inv ocation set, do the follo wing: 1.
21 Hotkey Beeper Control The Beeper can be hotkey toggled On and Off . T o toggle the Beeper , do the following: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode. (See Pg. 16) 2. Press and release the B ke y . The Beeper toggles On or Off. The Command Line displa ys Beeper On or Beeper Off for one second; then the message disappears and you automatically exit Hotkey Mode.
22 Hot Key Configuration for Mac and SUN The MiniView™ Extreme’ s default port configuration is for a PC Compatib le keyboard oper ating platform, and a US English keyboard language code. If your requirements call for different port settings (you have a Mac or Sun attached to a port, e.
23 Keyboard Emulation: Sun Keyboard The PC (101/104) key keyboard can emulate the functions of the Sun keyboard when the Control key [Ctrl] is used in conjunction with other keys . The corresponding functions are shown in the table below . But make sure y ou set this port to Sun first (refer to the above section).
24 Mac Keyboard The keyboard emulation mappings from the Mac keyboard to the PC keyboards (101 key and 104 ke y), are listed in the table below . But make sure you set this port to Mac first (refer to the above section). These hotke ys are designed for Mac OS X or later , f or OS9.
25 The Windows-based Firmware Upgrade Utility (FWUpgrade.exe) provides a smooth, automated process f or upgrading the KVM s witch’ s firmware. The Utility comes as part of a Firmware Upgrade Package that is specific for each device. New firmware upgrade packages are posted on our web site as new firmware revisions become available.
26 The Firmware Upgrade Utility Shut down the computers on your MiniView™ Extreme installation and make sure the firmware upgrade switch is set to “Upgrade”. Make sure the power plugged into the KVM. Once the power is plugged in and the switch is set to upgrade, all of the amber lights on the KVM will flash once per second.
27 The Firmware Upgrade Utility T o upgrade your firmware: Run the downloaded Firmware Upgrade Package file - either by double-clicking the file icon, or by opening a command line and entering the full path to it. The Firmware Upgrade Utility Welcome screen appears: Read and Agree to the License Agreement (enable the I Agree radio button).
3. Click Ne xt to continue. The Firmware Upgr ade Utility main screen appears: The Utility inspects your installation. All the devices capable of being upgraded by the package are listed in the Device List panel.
4. As you select a device in the list, its description appears in the Device Description panel. 29 The Firmware Upgrade Utility.
After you have made your device selection(s), Click Next to perform the upgrade. If you enabled Check Firmware V ersion , the Utility compares the device’ s firmware lev el with that of the upgrade files.
31 The Firmware Upgrade Utility As the Upgrade proceeds status messages appear in the Status Messages panel, and the progress toward completion is sho wn on the Progress bar . After the upgrade has completed, a screen appears to inform you that the procedure was successful: Clic k Finish to close the Firmware Upgrade Utility .
32 The Firmware Upgrade Utility If the upgrade failed to complete successfully a dialog box appears asking if y ou want to retr y . Click Y es to retry . If you click No , the Upgrade F ailed screen appears: Clic k Cancel to close the Fir mware Upgrade Utility .
