6 User Guide Arranging y our workspace T o get the most from your computer , arrange both the equipment you use and your work area to suit your needs and the kind of work you do. Y our comfort is of foremost importance, but light sour ces, air circulation, and the location of electrical outlets can also affect the way you arrange your workspace.

16 User Guide Using the IBM ScrollP oint mouse There ar e two types of mice for your computer , the Scr ollPoint III and the ScrollPoint W ireless mouse. Ther e are some differences that will be discussed later . However , from an operational standpoint, they are the same.

T o lower the device bay for access to the optical drive, press the device bay release button 1 .T oc l o s et h e device bay , push upwards on the device bay until it latches i n the closed position.
18 User Guide Using an optical drive Y our computer has a preinstalled optical drive. The CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can play back or read from a CD or DVD disc but cannot write information to it.

XGA is a standard for displaying text and graphics images on a monitor scr een and supports a variety of video modes . V ideo modes are differ ent combinations of res olu ti on, re fre sh ra te , and c olo r .

26 User Guide Moving y our computer T ake the following precautions before moving your computer . 1. Remove all media (diskettes, compact discs, tapes, and so on) from the drives. 2. T urn off the computer and all attached devices. Y our hard disk drive automatically parks the read/write heads to pr event damage to the hard disk.

28 User Guide Viewing and changing settings The IBM Setup Utility menu displayed by your computer might look slightly differ ent from the menu shown her e, but it will operate the same way . The program menu lists items that identify system configuration topics.
Chapter 4. Using the IBM Setup Utility program 29 When working with the program menu, you must use the keyboar d. The following table shows the keys used to accomplish various tasks. Note: Active keys are displayed at the bottom of each scr een; not all of these keys are active on every menu.
30 User Guide Administrator passw ord Setting an administrator password deters unauthorized persons fr om changing configuration settings. If you are r esponsible for maintaining the settings of several computers, you might want to set an administrator password.

34 User Guide Backing up configuration settings Important Run ConfigSafe (or a similar application) to take a snapshot of your computer configuration before installing an optional device. U sing this snapshot, you can view and compare the c hanges in the computer configuration after you install an option.

36 User Guide Disconnecting cables T o disconnect cables, do the following: 1. Remove any media (diskettes or CDs) from the drives and shut down your operating system. 2. Read the “ Safety notices ” on page vii. 3. Read “ Handling static-sensitive devices ” on page 33.
Chapter 5. Installing options 37 Removing the rear co ver Y ou must remove the r ear cover to install internal options such as memory and PCI adapters. Attention: Proper cooling is necessary to avoid damage to your computer . Do not operate your computer without all covers in place.
38 User Guide Installing an adapter Y our computer system board has two peripheral component inter connect (PCI) expansion slots. Depending on your model, the expansion slots might already have adapters installed. Y ou can install a low-profile PCI adapter in any available PCI expansion slot.
Chapter 5. Installing options 39 Removing the har d disk drive The hard disk drive must be r emoved before you can install memory DIMMs. T o remove the hard disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove the rear computer cover . See “ Removing the rear cover ” on page 37.
40 User Guide Installing memory Y ou can add memory t o y our computer t o i nc r ease s ystem p erformance. Y our computer has t wo DIMM connectors 1 for i nstalling memor y . The maximum T o install a DIMM, do the following: 1. Remove the rear computer cover .
Chapter 5. Installing options 41 5. Position the new DIMM over the socket, making sure that the notches in the DIMM are aligned with the tabs on the socket. Push the DIMM straight down into the connector until the retaining clips close. 6. Replace the hard disk drive.
42 User Guide Removing the optical drive T o remove the optical drive, do the following: 1. Drop down the device bay . See “ Accessing the optical drive ” on page 17. 2. Press down and slide out the back cover 1 ; then pr ess down and slide out the optical drive top cover 2 .

This chapter also contains information about option diskettes and how to recover fr om a BIOS update failure.

The amount of available memory shown might be somewhat less than expected because of basic input/output system (BIOS) shadowing and other resource r equirements (such as ACPI and USB).

An important point after buying a device IBM 6274 (or even before the purchase) is to read its user manual. We should do this for several simple reasons:
If you have not bought IBM 6274 yet, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with the basic data on the product. First of all view first pages of the manual, you can find above. You should find there the most important technical data IBM 6274 - thus you can check whether the hardware meets your expectations. When delving into next pages of the user manual, IBM 6274 you will learn all the available features of the product, as well as information on its operation. The information that you get IBM 6274 will certainly help you make a decision on the purchase.
If you already are a holder of IBM 6274, but have not read the manual yet, you should do it for the reasons described above. You will learn then if you properly used the available features, and whether you have not made any mistakes, which can shorten the lifetime IBM 6274.
