3 3 VHF55S INTRODUCTION The Humminbir d® VHF55S represents state-of-the-art high tech VHF Handheld engineering, and is skillfully designed and constructed with the finest components. It is constructed to commercial- grade standards to give y ou clear , reliable communication.

7 7 FEA TURES OVER VIEW Y our Humminbird® VHF55S has the following featur es: Channel 16/9 Priority Key : Provides quick access to emergency Channel 16, the univ ersal and most frequently-used marine channel, which is used f or distress or safety communications.
8 8 Priority Scan: Allows you to scan all channels while alternately scanning Channel 16 to make sure that you don’t miss distress or emer gency calls. NO TE: Y ou should record y our VHF55S’s serial number, which is on the back panel of the radio, here.
9 9 1a. If you are going to use alkaline batteries, remo ve the alkaline battery compartment cover and install 6 AA alkaline batteries. Re-install the cover to the battery compartment, then secure in place.
2. Attaching the Antenna Y ou will need to make sure that the flexible antenna is attached to the radio. T o install the antenna: 1. Install the antenna securely onto the radio, making sure that the antenna and the threads on the unit are free fr om debris.
1 1 1 1 USING YOUR VHF55S Y ou should be famliar with several oper ating procedures: 1. T urning the power on/off . 2. Adjusting Squelch. 3. Selecting the U.S./International/Canadian band. 4. T ransmitting and receiving. 5. Accessing the 16/9 priority channels.

Selecting U.S./International/Canadian Band When operating in U.S. w aters, your radio should be set f or the U.S. band; when operating in Canadian waters, the radio should be set f or the Canadian band; when operating in International waters, the radio should be set f or the International band.
1 1 3 3 7. Selecting High/Low P o wer Y ou must press and release the HI/LOW/L OCK key to toggle the transmit po wer between High and Low . Select HI (High P ow er T r ansmit) for long-range communications, and LOW (Lo w Po wer T ransmit) for shorter -range communications to save battery po wer .
1 1 4 4 10. Adding/Deleting Channels to/from Memory Y our VHF55S can store any channel (including private channels). T he stored channels are the ones scanned in the Memory Scan mode. T o add channels to memory : 1. During normal operating mode, use the Up or Down Channel ke ys to select the desired channel for programming.
1 1 5 5 1c. Press and release the SC AN key for 3 seconds to enter Priority Scan mode. T he Priority Scan (P) icon will appear on the LCD just befor e the Scan icon. 2. During any of the Scan modes, press the Up or Down Channel k eys to change the scan direction.
1 1 6 6 T o activate and terminate T ri W atch mode: 1. Press and hold the DUAL/TRI W atch key for 3 seconds to activate the T ri Watch mode. T he TRI icon will appear on the LCD. 2a. Press and hold the DUAL/TRI W atch key again for 3 seconds to terminate T ri Watch Mode and to return to the previous w orking channel.
1 1 7 7 MAINTENANCE T o keep your Humminbird® VHF55S working properly , perform the following maintenance as needed. If your unit comes into contact with salt spray , simply wipe the affected surfaces with a cloth dampened in fresh water . Do not use a chemical glass cleaner on the lens, as chemicals in the solution may cause cracking in the lens.
