2 How Sonar W orks How Sonar W orks Sonar technology is based on sound wav es. The 300 Series™ F ishfinder uses sonar to locate and define structur e, bottom contour and composition, as well as depth directly below the tr ansducer .
3 When all the echo es are view ed side by side, an easy to interpret “gr aph“ of the bottom, fish, and structure appear s. The sou nd pu ls es are t ran smi tt ed at var iou s frequencies depending on the applica tion. V ery high frequencies (455 kHz) ar e used for grea test definition but the operating depth is limited.
4 DualBeam PLUS™ Sonar (DualBeam PLUS™ models only [385ci]) Y our 3 8 5c i Fi sh f i nd e r uses a 200/83 kHz DualBeam PLUS™ sonar system with a wide (60°) area of cov erage. DualBeam PL US™ sonar has a narro wly focused 20° center beam, surrounded b y a second beam of 60°, expanding your cov erage to an ar ea equal to your depth.
5 Down Imaging™ Sonar (Down Imaging™ models only [385ci DI]) Y our 385ci DI F ishfinder uses Down Imaging™ technology . T he Down Imaging™ transducer scans the w ater with razor -thin, high-definition beams. T he beams are wide (side to side) but very thin fr ont to back.
6 Dual Beam Ice T ransducer (o pti ona l- pur ch as e XI 9 20 I ce T r ans du cer o nly ) Y our Fi s hf i n de r s up p or t s t he o p t io n al - purchase XI 9 20 Ice T ransducer which provide s selectable dual-frequency sonar with a wide area of cov erage.
7 How GPS W orks Y our 300 Series™ Fishfinder also supports GPS (Global P ositioning System) and chartplotting. It uses GPS and sonar to determine your position, displa y it on a grid, and provide detailed underw ater inf ormation. GPS uses a constellation of satel lites that continually send radio signals to the earth.

10 Understanding the Sonar Display It is important to understand the significance of the display . The display does not sho w a literal 3-dimensional repr esentation of what is under the wate r .
11 SwitchFir e™ SwitchFire™ contr ols how the sonar r eturns are display ed in the Sonar V iews. SwitchFire™ sett ings are av ailable in the Sonar Menu T ab. T o see the maximum sonar information a vailable within the transducer beam so more fish arches and better jig tr acking are sho wn, choose Max Mode.
12 Bottom Presentation As the boat mov es, the unit charts the changes in depth on the display to cr eate a profile of the Bottom Contour . T he type of bottom can be determined from the return charted on the display . 16 Understanding the Down Imaging™ Display The images y ou see on the Down Imaging™ display ar e produced using sonar technology . Each time the unit pings, a strip of data repr esenting all the echoes receiv ed by the transducer ar e put together on the display to f orm the image that you see.
17 Down Imaging™ Sensitivity Use Imaging Sensitivity to control how the sonar returns appear on the display . Increase the sensitivity to rev eal weaker r eturns that ma y be of interest, especially in very clear wa ter or greater depths.
V iews The sonar and na vigation inf ormation from your Fish finder is displayed on y our screen in a variety of easy -to-read views. T here ar e many views a vailable on y our Fishfinder . • Default Vie w: When y ou first po wer up the 385ci control head, Sonar Vie w will be the default vie w .
19 T o customize your vie w rotation: Y ou can choose which views are hidden or visible in your vie w rota tion. 1. Press the MENU ke y twice to access the tabbed Main Menu, then press the RIGHT Cur sor key until the V iews tab is selected. 2. Press the UP or DOWN Cursor k eys to select a V iew .
20 Sonar V iew Sonar Vie w presents a historical log of sonar returns. T he most r ecent sonar returns are charted on the right side of the displa y . As new inf ormation is received, the historical information scr olls left across the display .
21 Sonar Zoom V iew Sonar Zoom View pr ovides a magnified vie w of the bottom and structure. The Sonar Zoom Vie w makes it easier to see separ ate sonar returns tha t would usually be displayed close together , such as those caused by fish suspended close to the bottom or within structure.
22 Split Sonar V iew Split Sonar V iew displays sonar r eturns from each down beam fr equency on separate sides of the screen. Y ou can use the Split Sonar V iew to make side b y side comparisons between the sonar r eturns from both beams.
23 Big Digits V iew Big Digits V iew pr ovides digital data in a lar ge, easy-to-see forma t. • Digital Readouts: Depth is always displa yed. Readouts f or temperatur e, speed, and T riplog information ar e displayed automa tically if the appropria te accessory is connected to the Fishfinder .

Use the X -Press™ Menu to set the Sensitivity , Upper Range, and Lower Range.
27 Ice Fishing Mode: On When Ice F ishing Mode is on , the Circular Flasher V iew displa ys the sonar data in tra ditional flasher format with additional f eatures including Zoom and Depth Cursor .
28 T o activate the Depth Cursor: Use the Depth Cursor to identify depth on the flasher display . 1. Set up: Press the VIEW key r epeatedly until the Cir cular Flasher Vie w is displayed on the screen. T urn on the Ice Fishing Mode (see Sonar Menu T ab ).

30 Snapshot and Recording V ie w The Snapshot and Recording V iew displays the scr een snapshots and recording s that are sa ved on the optional-purchase SD car d installed in the control head. Use this view to r evie w the snapshot and recording file details, start record ing, and adjust the recording settings.
31 Screen Snapshots Screen Snapshots are sav ed pictures of the vie w on the screen. T he screen snapshot will include the menus, dialog boxes, warnings, and messages tha t were activ e when the screen snapshot w as taken. F rom the Na vigation X -Press™ Menu, select Sav e Current Route, and press the RIGHT Cursor k ey . Navigation will continue. Create a route: F rom the Routes submenu, select Crea te and press the RIGHT Cursor k ey .

59 GO T O Ke y The GO T O ke y has multiple functions, which depend on the situation. • Active Cursor: Pr ess the GO TO k ey while in any vie w to create a waypoi nt and start navigation to wards tha t waypoint. • Without Active Cursor: Press the GO T O ke y to display the sav ed waypoi nts list, and then highlight a waypoint.
60 SD Card Slot The SD car d slot on your contr ol head can be used with SD memory cards (optional-pur chase required) to add detail ed charts to your Fishfinder or export naviga tion data fr om your Fishfinder (see Introd uction to Navigation ). 64 Self T est displays results fr om the internal diagnostic self test, including unit serial number , Printed Cir cuit Board (PCB) serial number , softw are re vision, total hours of opera tion, and the input voltage. Accessory T est lists the accessories connected to the system.
65 GPS Diagnostic View sho ws a sky chart and numerical da ta from the GPS receiver . The sk y chart shows the location of each visible GPS sa tellite with its satellite number and a signal str ength bar . A dark gra y bar indicates tha t the satellite is being used to determine y our current position.
66 X -Press™ Menu The X -Pr ess™ Menu provides a shortcut to y our most frequently -used settings. The options provide d on the X-Pr ess™ Menu correspond with the current view . For example, if you ar e in a Sonar Vie w and press the MENU k ey once, the Sonar X-Pr ess™ Menu will display .
67 Main Menu The Main Menu pr ovides the standar d set of menu options, including the settings that ar e changed less frequently . The Main Menu is organized under the f ollowing tabs to help you find a specific menu item quickly: Alarms, Sonar , Na vigation, Chart, Setup, and V iews.

72 Sensitivity Settings: Low = 1, High = 20; Default = 10 Sensitivity controls how much detail is sho wn on the display and will adjust the sensitivity of all sonar frequencies. When oper ating in v ery clear water or gr eater depths, increa se the sensitivity to see weaker returns tha t may be of interest .
73 Upper Range (Advanced: Sonar , Split Sonar , Circular Flasher, and Big Digits Vie ws only) Settings: 0 to 990 feet or 0 to 327 meters [International Models only]; Default = 0 ft Upper Range sets the shallow est depth range that will be displa yed on the Sonar , Split Sonar , Circular Flasher , and Big Digits V iews.

75 Cancel Navigation (only when Navigating) Settings: Follow scr een instructions to activate. Cancel Navigation discards the curr ent route and exits Naviga tion Mode. T his menu option will only appear when you are curr ently naviga ting a route. T his will not delete a previously -sav ed route.
