Device software The printing-sys tem software is included with the de vice. See the getting started guide for installation instructions. The printing system includes softwa re for end us ers and network admini str ators, and printer drivers for access to the device features and communication with the computer.
The device uses the PCL 5, PCL 6, and HP postscri pt level 3 emulation printer de scription language (PDL) drivers . ● Use the PCL 6 printe r driver for the best overall performance.
● Default printer driver settings : The default printer driver setting s deter mine the settin gs used in all print jobs, unless settings are changed in the Page Setup , Print , or Printer Properti es dialog boxes.

Use the control panel The control pane l has a VGA touchscreen that provides access to all device functions. Use the bu ttons and numeric keypad to cont rol jobs and the device status.
Home screen The home screen p rovides access to the device features, and it indicates the current status of the device. NOTE: Depending on how the system administrator ha s configured the device, the features that appear on the home scree n can vary.
Buttons on the touchscreen The status line on the touchscreen pro vides informat ion about the status o f the device. Various buttons can appear in this a rea. The following table describes each button. Home button . To uch the home button to go to the Home scree n from any other screen.
Use the Administration menu Use the Administration menu to set up default device behavior and other global settings, such as the language an d the format for date and time. Navigate the Administration menu From the Home scree n, touch Administration to open the menu structure.

General guidelines for media Before purchasing any p aper or specialized forms in quantity, verify that your p aper supplier has obtained and und erstands the print-media requirements that a r e specified in the HP LaserJet Printer Family Pr int Me dia Guid e .
● Do not use any media that produces hazardo us emissi ons, or that melts, of fsets, or discolors when exposed to the temperature of the fuser. ● Do not use pa per that is embossed or coated, or any medi a that is not designed to withstand the fusing temp erature of the device.
Media considerations Envelopes Envelope construction is critical . Envelope fold lines can vary considerably, no t only between manufacturers , but also within a box from the sa me manufacturer. Successful printing on envelopes depends upon the quality of the enve lopes.
Envelopes with adhesive strips or flaps Envelopes with a peel-off ad hesive strip or with more tha n one flap that folds over to seal must use adhesives compatible with the heat a nd pressure in the product. The extra flaps and strips might cause wrinkling, creasing, or ev en jams and might even damage the fuser.
NOTE: Choose transparencies in the printer driver. See Open the printer drivers on page 9 . Card stock and heavy media You can print many types of card stock from the in put tr ay, including inde x cards and postcard s. Some card stock performs better than others because its co nstruction is be tter suited for feeding through a laser printer .
To avoid proble ms when using preprinted forms, embossed paper, and letterh ead, observe the following guidelines: ● Avoid using low-temp erature inks (the kind used with some types of thermography). ● Use preprinted forms a nd letterhead paper that have be en printed by offset lithography or engraving.

Select print media This device accepts a variety of media, such as cut-sheet paper, including up to 100% recycled fiber content paper; envelo pes; labels; transparencies; and custom-size paper. Properties such as weig ht, composition, grain, and moisture content are import ant factors that affect dev ice performan ce and output quality.

Printing and paper-storage en vironment Ideally, the printing a nd paper-storage environment shou ld be at or near ro om temperature, and not too dry or too humid. R emember paper is hygroscop ic; it absorbs and loses moisture ra pidly. Heat works with humidit y to damage paper.
Load media Load special print media, such as envelopes, labels, and transparencies, in tray 1 on ly. Load only paper in tray 2 or optional tray 3 . Load media on the scanner glass Use the scanner glas.
Load tray 1 (multipurpose tray) Tray 1 h olds up to 100 shee ts of paper, up to 75 tran sparen cies, up to 50 sheets of labels, or up to 10 envelopes. For info rmation about loading special media , see Load special media on page 70 . 1. Open tray 1 by pulling the front cover down .
4. Place media into th e tray (short-edge in, p rint-side up). The media should be cent ered between the media-width guides and under the tabs on the med ia-width guides. 5. Slide the media-width gu ides inward until they lig htly touch the me dia stack on both sides without bending it.
Load tray 2 and optional tray 3 Trays 2 and 3 support only paper. For supp orted paper sizes, see Select print media on page 63 . 1. Pull the tray out of the devi ce and remove any paper. 2. On the rear pape r-length guide, press the tab and slide it so that the point er matches the paper size that you are loading.
4. Place the paper in the tray and make sure that it is fla t at all four corners. Kee p the paper below the height tabs on the paper-lengt h gu ide in the rear of the tray. 5. Push down on the p aper to lock the metal paper-lift p late in place. 6. Slide the tray into the device.

Control print jobs When a job is sent to the printer, the printer driver controls what paper tray is used to pul l media throug h the printer. By default, the printer automatically selects the tray, but a specific tray can be chosen base d on three user-speci fied settings: Source , Type , and Size .
Select output bins The product has two output bins into which it places finished print jobs: ● Top (face-down) output b in: This it the default ou tpu t bin at the top of the pr oduct. Print jobs exit the product face-down into this bin. ● Rear (face-up) output bin: Print jobs exit the produc t face-up into this bin at the rear of the product.
Print to the rear output bin NOTE: When tray 1 and the rear outpu t bin are used together, they provide a straight-through paper path for your print jo b. Using a strai ght-through paper path can reduce curling. 1. Open the rear ou tput bin. 2. If you are printi ng on long media, pull ou t the bin extension.

Use the convenience stapler A convenience stap ler is mounted to the front, rig ht side of the device. The convenien ce stapler operates independently from the control p anel and device software, and does not automatically staple p rint jobs. The stapler requ ires no settings and generates no error messages or status messages.
Load staples Each staple cartridge h olds 1,500 unformed staples. To load staples into the device, insert a staple cartridge. 1. Open the stapler doo r.

Use job storage features The following job-storage features are available for this device : ● Proof and hold jobs : This feature provides a quick an d easy way to print and proof one copy of a job and then print the additional co pies.
Print the remaining copies of a proof and hold job At the device control p anel, use the following proced ure to print the remaining copies of a job held on the hard disk. 1. From the Home screen, touch Job Storag e . 2. Touch the Retrieve tab. 3. Scroll to and touch the job storage folder that holds the job .
6. Use the numeri c keypad to type the PIN , and then t ouch OK . 7. Touch the Copies field to change the numbe r of copies to print. 8. Touch Retrieve Stored Job ( ) to prin t the document. Delete a private job A private job i s automatically deleted from the device hard disk after you release it for printing.
3. Scroll to and touch the job storage folder that holds the job . 4. Scroll to and touch the job that you want to print. 5. Touch the Copies field to change the number of copies to print. 6. Touch Retrieve Stored Job ( ) to print the documen t. Delete a QuickCopy job Delete a QuickCopy job a t the device control panel when you n o longer need it.
6. Touch More Options to view and chan ge other job storage op tions. 7. After all the options are set, touch Create Stored Job ( ) in the upper-left corner of the scree n to scan the document and store the job. The job is sa ved on the device until you delete it, so you can print it as often as necessa ry.

Use features in the Windows printer driver When you print from a soft ware program, many of the product features are available from the printer driver. For complete info rmation about the features that are available in the printer dri ver, see the printer- driver Help.
Use watermarks A watermark is a notice , such as "Confident ial," that is printed in the ba ckground of each page of a document. 1. On the File menu in the so ftware program, c lick Print . 2. Select the driver, and then click Pr operties or Pr eferences .
4. On the Custom Paper Size window, type the name of the custom paper size. 5. Type the pape r-size length and width. If yo u type a size that is too small or too large, the driver adjusts the size to the minimum or maximum size that is allowed. 6. If necessary, click the button to change the unit of measure between mi llimeters and inches.

Use automatic duplex printing 1. Insert enough paper into one of the trays to acco mmo date the print job. If you are lo ading special paper such as lette rhead, load it in one of the followi ng ways: ● For tray 1, load th e letterhead paper with the front side up, bottom-edge first.

Use features in the Macintosh printer driver When you print from a soft ware program, many of the printer features are av a ilable from the printer driver. For complete info rmation about the features that are available in the printer dri ver, see the printer- driver Help.
1. Open the printer driver (see Open the printer drivers on page 9 ). 2. Click the Layout pop-up menu. 3. Next to Pages pe r Sheet , select the number of pages that you want to print on each sheet (1, 2, 4, 6, 9, or 16) . 4. Next to Layou t Direction , select the order and placement o f the pages on the sheet.
Print on both sides manu ally 1. Insert enough paper into one of the trays to acco mmo date the print job. If you are lo ading special paper such as lette rhead, load it in one of the followi ng ways: ● For tray 1, load the letterhead p aper face-up with the bottom edge feeding in to the printer first.
Cancel a print job You can stop a print request by u sing the printer control panel or usin g your software program. For instructions on how to st op a print request from a computer on a netw ork, see the online He lp for the specific network soft ware.

7 Copy This device can function as a stan dalone, walk-up copier. It is not nece ssary to install the printing system software on the computer, nor is it necessary to h ave the computer turned on to make photocopies. You can adjust the copy sett ings at the control pa nel.
Use the Copy screen From the Hom e screen, touch Copy to view the Co py screen. The Cop y screen is shown in Figure 7-1 Copy scr een on pag e 98 . Note that only the first six copy features are im mediately visible. In order to view additional copy fea tures, touch More Op tions .
Set the default copy options You can use the admini stration menu to establish defaul t settings that apply to al l copy jobs. If necessary, you can override most settings for an individ ual job. After that job is complete, the device returns to the default settin gs.
Basic copy instructions This section provide s the bas ic instructions for copying. Copy from the scanner glass Use the scanner gla ss to make as many as 999 copi es of sma ll, lightweight med ia (less than 60 g/m 2 or 16 lb) or heavy media (mo re than 105 g/m 2 or 28 lb).
Adjust the copy settings The device offers several feature s so you can optimi ze copied o utput. These features are all available on the Copy screen. The Copy screen consists of severa l pages. From the first page, touch More Options to go to the next page.
Copy two-sided documents Two-sided docume nts can be copied manu ally or automatically. Copying two-sided documents manually Copies resulting f rom this procedure ar e printed on on e side, and ne ed to be ha nd-collated.
3. Touch Sides . 4. Touch 2–sided origin al, 2–sided output . 5. Touch OK . 6. Touch Start Copy . Make one-sided copies from two-sided documents 1. Load the documents to be copied into the document feeder with the first page facing up, and with the top o f the page leading .
Copy mixed-size originals You can copy origina l documents that are printed on diff erent sizes of paper as lo ng as the sheets of paper have one common dim ension. For example, you could combin e letter and legal sizes, or you could combine A4 and A5 sizes.
Change the copy-collation setting You can set the device to automatically collate multip le copies into sets. For example, if you are making two copies of three pa ges and the automatic collation is on, the pages print in th is order: 1,2,3,1,2,3. If automatic collation is off, the page s print in this order: 1,1,2,2,3,3.
Copy photos and books Copy a photo NOTE: Photos shou ld be copied from the flatb ed scanner, not fr om the document feed er. 1. Lift the lid and place th e photo on the flatbed sc ann er with the picture-side down and the uppe r- left corner of the photo in the up per-left corner of the glass.
Combine copy jobs by using Job Build Use the Job Build feature to buil d a single copy job from multiple scans. You can use either the docume nt feeder or the scanne r glass. The settings for the first scan are used for subsequent scans. 1. Touch Copy .
Cancel a copy job To cancel the copy jo b that is currently running, touch Stop on the control pa nel. This pauses the device. Then touch Ca ncel current job . NOTE: If you cancel a cop y job, clear the doc ument fr om the flatbed scanner or from the automatic document fe eder.
8 Scan and send e-mail The device offers color-sca nning and digital-sending capabilities. By using th e control panel, you can scan black-and-white or color documents and send them to an e-mail ad dress as an e-mail attachment. To use digital sending, the device must be connected to a local area network (LAN).
Configure e-mail settings Before you can send a document to e-mail, you must co nfigure the de vice for e-mailing. NOTE: You can also configure the e-mail settings by using the embed ded Web server, which HP recommends. For helpful tips and more abou t configuring the scan e- mail fe ature, see the Embedded Web Server User Guide on the device C D.
4. Type the SMTP gateway address, e ither as an IP add ress or as a fully qualified domai n name. If you do not know the IP address or domain n ame, contact the ne twork administrato r. 5. Touch OK . Test the SMTP settings 1. From the Home screen, touch Administration .
Use the Send E-mail screen Use the touchscreen to navigate through the options on the Send E-mail screen. 1 Send E-mail button Touching this button scans the document and s ends an e-mail file to the provided e-mail addresses. 2 Home button Touching this button ope ns the Home screen.
Perform basic e-mail functions The device e-mail feat ure offers the following bene fits: ● Sends documents to multiple e-mail addresses, saving time and delivery costs. ● Delivers files in black-and-white or in color. Files can be sent in different file formats that the recipient can manipula te.
5. (Optional) Touch More Options to change the settings for the document that you are sending (for example, the document’s o riginal size). If you ar e sending a two-sided document, yo u should select Sides and an opt ion with a two-side d original.
Use the address book You can send e-mail to a list of recipients by using the address bo ok feature of the device. See your system administrator for informatio n about configuring address lists. NOTE: You can also use the embe dded Web server to create and manag e the e-mail address bo ok.
Add e-mail addresses to the local address b ook 1. Touch Local . 2. Touch . 3. (Optional) Touch the Name field , and in the keyboard that ap pears type a name for the new e ntry. Touch OK . The name is the alias for the e-mai l address. If you do not type an alias name, the alia s will be the e-mail address itself.

Scan to a folder NOTE: This device feature is supported for th e HP LaserJet M3035 MFP models only. If the system administrator has made the feature avail able, the device can scan a file and send it to a folder on the network.

Analog faxing On the HP LaserJet M302 7x or the HP LaserJet M3 035xs MFPs, the device can function as a standalone fax mach ine. Connect the fax to a telephone line When connecting the fax to a telephone line, ensure that the te lephone line that is being used for the fax is a dedicated line that is not used by other devices.
Digital fax Digital faxing is available when you install the optional HP Digital Sending Software. For information about or dering this softw are, go to www.h p.com/ go/LJM3027mfp_software or www.hp.com/ go/ LJM3035mfp_software . With digital faxing , the device does not need to be connected dire ctly to a phone line.

Replace supplies and parts Carefully follow the guidelines in this secti on when replacing device supplies. Supply replacement guidelines To facilitate the replacement of supplies, keep the following guidelin es in mind when setting up the device. ● Sufficient space is requi red above and in the front o f the device for removing suppli es.
3. Remove the new print cartridge from the ba g. Place the used print cartridge in the bag for recycling. 4. Grasp both sides of the print cartrid ge and distribu te the toner by gen tly rocking the print cartridge. CAUTION : Do not touch the shutter or the surface of the roller.
6. Align the print cartridge with the tra cks inside th e device, and, using the handle, insert the prin t cartridge until it is firmly seated , an d then close the front door. After a short time, the cont rol panel should display Ready . 7. Installation is complete .
Clean the device During the printing process, pa per, toner, and dust particles ca n accumulate inside the device. Over time, this buildup can cause pr int-quality problems, such as toner specks or smearing (see Solve print - quality problems on page 178 ).
Clean the scanner lid backing Minor debris can accumula te on the white document lid backing that is located underneath the scanner lid. 1. Open the sca nner lid. 2. Clean the white document lid backing by using a so ft cloth o r sponge that has been moistened wi th a mild soap and w arm water.
2. Open the ADF cover. 3. Press the round blue button while liftin g the green lever. Rotate the green lever until it stops in the open position. The p ickup roller assembly should remain on the surface. 4. Remove the assembly, and then wipe the as sembly with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
6. Make sure that both sides of the a ssembly are secured by the blue hooks. 7. Lower the roller asse mbly, and then close the ADF cover. NOTE: If jams continue in the ADF, contact a local HP-authorize d service provider. See HP Customer Care on page 214 .
Calibrate the scanner Calibrate the scanner to compensate for offsets in the scanner imaging system (carriage head) for ADF and flatbed scans. Be cause of mechanical tolerances , the scanner's carriage head might not read the position of the image accurately.

Print job is extremely slow. Cause Solution The job might be very complex. The maximum speed of the device cannot b e exceeded even when more memory is added.
The device prints, b ut the text is w rong, garbled, or incomplete. Cause Solution The wrong driver was se lected in the software. Check the software device selection menu to make sure that an HP LaserJet M3 027/M3035 device is selected. The software program is malfunctioning.
Control-panel message types Four types of control-panel messages can indicate the status of or problems with the device. Jam recovery The device has a jam-recovery feat ure that determines if the device will reprin t jammed pages after the jam is cleared. ● Auto instructs the de vice to automatically turn jam recovery on when su fficient device memory. ● Off instructs the device not to a ttempt to reprint jammed pages.
Clear jams When clearing jams, be very careful not to tear the m edia. If a small piece of media re mains in the device, it could caus e additional jams . Clear jams from the ADF 1. Open the ADF cover. 2. Lifting the green lever, rotate the pick mechanism until it stays open.
4. Open the scanne r lid and gently loosen th e medi a by using both h ands. When the media is free , gently pul l it out in the direction shown. 5. Close the scanner lid, and then lower the roller assembly. 6. Close the AD F lid. 7. If any media is visibl e in the out put bin area , gently pull it out .
Clear jams from the input-tray areas NOTE: To remove media from the tra y 1 area, slowly pull the media out of the device. For all other trays, complete the followin g procedure. 1. Slide the tray out of the device, and re move any damaged paper from the tray.
3. Before replacing the tray, make sure the paper is fl at in the tray at all fo ur corners and below the tabs on the g uides. 4. Open and close the front door, and then touch OK on the touchscreen to clear the jam me ssage. If a jam message pe rsists, there is still media in the device.
2. Open the plate, a nd then slowly pull the media o ut of the device. Be careful to not tear the media. CAUTION : Avoid spilling loose toner. Use a dry, lint-free cloth, to clean any toner that might have fallen into the device. If l oose toner falls into the device, it might cause temporary problems with print quality.
2. Push down on the bin door to unclip the door stops, and then let the door drop op en. 3. Grasp both sides of th e media, and slowly pull th e media o ut of the device. (There might be loose toner on t he media. Be care ful not to sp il l it on yourself or into the device.
Clear jams fr om the duplexer 1. Remove tray 2 from the device. 2. Push the green button on the top right front of the tray 2 opening to access the duplex paper path. 3. Reach in and p ull out the jammed paper. 4. Push the bottom of the duplex access plate back up until it clicks into place on both sides (both sides need to be engaged).
5. Reinstall tray 2. Solve repeated jams If jams occur frequently, try the following action s: ● Check all the jam lo cations. A piece of media might be stuck some where in the device. ● Check that media is correctly lo aded in the tr ays, that the t rays are correctly ad justed for the loade d media size, and that the trays are not overfilled.
● Clean the device. See Clean the device on pa ge 140 . ● Contact an HP-authorized service or sup port provid er to perform routine device maintenance. See the support flyer that was included with the device, o r see www.h p.com/ support/LJM3027mfp or www.
Clear stapler jams To reduce the risk of staple jams, m ake sure that you staple 20 or fewer pages o f media (80 g/m 2 or 20 lb) at a time. 1. Open the stapler doo r. NOTE: Opening the stapl er door disables the stapler. 2. Remove the staple cartridg e from the device.

This type of defect might o ccur when using prep rinted forms or a large qu antity of narrow media. 1. Print a few more p ages to see if the problem corrects itself. 2. Make sure that type and q uality of the medi a you a re using meet HP specifications.
Curl or wave 1. Turn over the stack in the tray. Also, try rotating the stack 180°. 2. Make sure that the type and quality of the media you are using meet HP specifications. (See Media considerations on page 58 .) 3. Make sure that the en vironmental specif ications for the device are being met.
Vertical white lines 1. Print a few more p ages to see if the problem corrects itself. 2. Make sure that the type and quality of the me dia you are usin g meet HP specifications.
Scattered lines 1. Make sure that the type and quality of the me dia you are using meet HP specification s. See Media considerations on page 58 . 2. Make sure that the environmental specif ications for the device are being met . See Operating environment on page 221 .
Random image repetition If an image that appears at the top of the page (in solid black) repeats further down the page (in a gray field), the toner might n ot have been completely er ased from the last job. (The repea ted image might be lighter or darke r than the field it appears in.
Solve network printing problems NOTE: HP recommends using th e device CD to install and set up th e device on a network. ● Print a configuration page (see Use information pages on page 124 ). If an HP Jetdirect print server is installed, printing a confi guration page also prints a second page that sh ows the network settings and status.
Solve copy problems Prevent copy problems The following ar e a few simple steps you can take to improve copy quality: ● Copy from the flatbed scanner. This will produce a hi gher quality copy than copying from the automatic document fee der (ADF). ● Use quality originals.

Problem Cause Solut ion The device does not pull media fro m a media tray. The device might be in manua l feed mode. ● If Manual Feed ap pears on the control-panel display, press OK to print the job. ● Verify that the device is not in manual feed mode, and then print your job again.
Performance problems Problem Cause Solution No copy came out. The input tray might be empty. Load media in the device. See Loa d media on page 66 for more information. The original might have been loaded incorrectly. Load the original correctly in the ADF or flatbed scanner.
Solve fax problems NOTE: For more information about so lving fax problems, see the HP LaserJet Analog Fax Accessory 300 User Guide . Solve sending problems Faxes quit during sending. Cause Solution The fax machine to which you are sendin g might be malfunctioning.
Faxes you send are not arriving at the receiving fax machine. Cause Solution the fax guide), and check the Result co lumn for jobs with a Pending designation. NOTE: If the fax is sending very slowly, see "Faxes are transmitting or being received very slowly" in Initial Setup menu on page 29 .
Faxes are not printing at the device. Cause Solution There is no media in the input trays. Load media. Any faxes received while the input trays are empty are stored and will print after the trays have been refilled. The Schedule Printing of Faxes mode is enabled.
Solve e-mail problems If you are unable to se nd e-mails by using the digita l-send feature, you might need to recon figure the SMTP gateway addre ss or the LDAP gate way address. Print a configurat ion page to fin d the curren t SMTP and LDAP gateway addresses.
Solve common Windows problems Error message: "General Protection FaultException OE" "Spool32" "Illegal Operation" Cause Solution Close all software programs, restart Windows, and try again. Select a different printer driver.
Solve common Macintosh problems In addition to the problems that are listed in Solve general device problems on page 150 , this section lists problems that ca n occur when using Mac OS X. NOTE: Setup for USB and IP printing is performed through the Desktop Printer Utility .
The printer driver does not automatica lly set up the selected device in the Pr int Ce nter or Printer Setup Utility. Cause Solution code for the language that you are using. If necessary, reinstall the software. See the getting started gu ide for instructions.
When connected with a USB cable, the dev ice does not appear in the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility after the driver is se lected. Cause Solution This problem is caused by either a software or a hardwar e component. Software t roubleshooting ● Check that your Macintosh supports USB.
