Contro l-panel l ayout The pr oduct ha s the following items on the c ontro l panel. ! 1 Control- panel di splay : The display provides information about the product. Use the menus on the display to establish product setting s. 2 Back arrow button : Use this button for the following actions: ● Exit the control-panel menus.

3. Extend the paper g uides ful ly (cal lout 1) and th en load the med ia stac k into Tray 1 ( callout 2) . Adjust the paper guides to the size of the paper. NOTE: Place the m edia into Tray 1 with the side to be printed on fac e-down a nd either the top (rotated media ) or righ t edge tow ard t he produ ct.
3. Place the paper fac e-up in th e tray an d make su re that it is fl at at all four co rners. Slide the paper length and width guides so that the y are a gainst th e stack of paper. NOTE: The follow ing sizes should n ot be r otated: le tter, A4, Executiv e, and B 5 (JIS).

Cancel a pr int job You can stop a print request by using the produc t control pan el or using your software progr am. For instru ctions on how to stop a p rint req uest fro m a comp uter on a network , see the onlin e Help for the specif ic netwo rk sof tware.

To make the Print on Both Sides (Manually) check box avail able in the do cument options, ena ble the Allow Manual Duplexing option on the Device Settings tab in the Properties print-dri ver tabs. 1. Settin g desc riptio n Set ting optio ns RGB Color ● Default (sRGB) instructs the pr oduct to interpre t RGB color as sRGB. The sRGB standard is the accepted standard of Microsoft and the World Wide Web Consortium ( www.w3.org ). ● Vivi d ( sRG B) instructs the prod uct to increas e the color sa turation in the midtones.
Match colors For most users, th e best me thod for mat ching colors i s to print sRGB colors. The p rocess of matc hing pri nter outp ut co lor to y our comput er sc reen is complex , becaus e printe rs and compute r monitors u se diff erent methods of produci ng color.
Use the follow ing procedu re to download the HP B asic Col or Matc h tool thr ough the softwar e CD. 1. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM d rive. The CD autoruns . 2. Select Inst all m ore soft ware . 3. Select HP Basic Color Matc h . The tool download s and install s itself .

The l atest vers ions of Adobe P hotoShop ® , CorelDRAW ® , Microso ft Office , and many oth er prog rams use s RGB to com municate color. Becau se it is the defau lt color space in Micro soft oper ating s ystems, sRGB ha s been adopted broadly .

Print Qualit y Use the se option s to i mprove the appea rance of your pr int jobs . These ar e the sa me opt ions that are availa ble on the cont rol p anel m enus. F or more informa tion, see Control -panel m enus on pag e 9 . Color Calibration ● Power On Calibration .
Product Se curity Set a pa ssword t o protect the product s etting s. After a passwor d is set , users wi ll be prompte d to enter the pass word bef ore th ey can a ccess any of th e HP Toolb oxFX pa ges that read o r write da ta from th e produc t. Setting the passwor d on thi s page al so sets the embe dded Web server pas sword.
HP Toolb oxFX, you must co nnect before you can visit these We b sites. Connec ting might r equire that you close HP To olboxFX and r eopen it. ● Support an d Troubleshoot ing . Connects to the supp ort site fo r the prod uct where y ou can searc h for help with a s pecific problem .

Embedded Web server sections The table below descri bes the basic screens of the embed ded Web ser ver. Tab or sec tio n Description Status tab Provides product, status, and configuration information. ● Device Status : Shows the product status and show s the approximate life rem aining for HP supplies.
Tab or section Description System tab Provides the ability to configure the system s ettings from a computer. ● Device Information : Allows you to name the product and assign an asset number to it. Enter t he name for the primary contact who will receive inform ation about the product.
Manage suppl ies Supplies life In June 2006, the Inter national O rganizati on for S tandardi zation (ISO) publishe d the IS O/IEC 19 798 toner c artridge yield standa rd for co lor lase r pri nters. HP a ctively partici pated in dev eloping thi s stan dard and en thusiast ically s upports its industry -wide use.
Print when cartridge is at estimated end of life A <S upply> Low message— where <Suppl y> is the color ca rtridge— appears when a print ca rtridge is nearin g the end of it s life. A <Supply> Ve ry Low message appears when the print cartr idge is at its estimat ed end of lif e.
Change prin t cartridges When a print c artridge a pproache s the end of its estima ted useful life, the control panel display s a messa ge recom mendi ng that yo u order a re placemen t.
4. Remove the new pri nt cartrid ge from its prot ective bag. NOTE: Be careful no t to dama ge the mem ory tag on the pr int cart ridge. 5. Grasp both sid es of the print cartrid ge and distri bute the toner by gently rocking the prin t cartr idge.
6. Remove th e orange protecti ve cove r from the prin t cartri dge. Place the prote ctive c over o n the used print ca rtridge to prote ct it during s hipping. CAUTION: Avoid prol onged exposur e to light. CAUTION: Do not t ouch t he green roller . Doing s o can dam age the c artridg e.
Memory and font DIMMs Product memory The produc t has one dual in line memor y module (DIM M) slot. Use the DIMM sl ot to upgrade the pro duct with the following items: ● More pr oduct mem ory (D IM.
3. Remove th e DIMM access d oor. 4. To replace a DIMM that is c urrently installed , spread the latc hes apart o n each side of the DIMM slot, lift the DIMM up at an an gle, an d pull i t out. 5. Remove the new DIMM from the antistatic p ackage, and then l ocate the alignmen t notch on th e bottom edge of the DIMM.
6. Holding the DIMM by t he edges, a lign the no tch on the DIMM with the bar in the DIMM sl ot at an angle. 7. Push down o n the DIMM until both latches engage the DIM M.
8. Reinsert the DI MM ac cess d oor. 9. Clos e the DIMM acc ess d oor. 10. Reconnect the power cable and USB o r network cable , and then turn on the pr oduct.
Enable m emory If you instal led a memory DIMM, set the printer drive r to recognize the new ly added me mory. Enable memory for Windows 1. On the Sta rt menu, poi nt to Sett ings , and cl ick Pr inte rs or Printer s and Faxes . 2. Select th is prod uct, an d then select Properties .
Clean the product usin g the embedded Web server 1. Open the embed ded Web se rver. 2. Click the System tab. 3. Click the Service menu. 4. Click the Start button. 5. Basic troubles hooting check list If you are expe riencin g proble ms with t he pr oduct, use th e foll owing ch ecklist to identi fy the cause of the probl em: ● Is the product co nnected to power .
Interpret con trol-panel and status-alert messages The cont rol-pane l messages indi cate the current pr oduct statu s or situations that might req uire actio n. Stat us-alert messages appear on the computer screen (i n additi on to control-p anel messa ges) when the product h as certain problem s.
Control- panel me ssage Status alert Description Recommen ded action 49 Error Turn off t hen on The product experienced an internal erro r. Turn the product off, wait at least 30 seconds, and then turn the product on and wait for it to initialize. If you are using a surge protector, remove it.
Control-panel message S tatus alert Description Recomm ended acti on 54.X X Erro r Turn off t hen on The product has experienced an error with one of the internal sensors. ● 54.15 = yellow ● 54.16 = magenta ● 54.17 = cyan ● 54.18 = black 1. Open the door to the cartridge tray and slide out the cartridge tray.

Be sure that each print cartridge is in the correct slot. From front to back, the print cartridges are installed in this order: black, cyan, magenta, yellow.
