Setting Up Y our Printing Solution Step 1: Installing the HP LaserJet T oner Car tr idge It is recommended that you use HP LaserJet toner cartridges. HP has designed the printe r, toner cartridge s, and toner formula to work tog ether to give you optimal image quality from you r printer.
Step 2: Attach ing the Label to the Pr inter A sheet of labels was shipped in the Paper Outpu t Bin of yo ur printer. You will need to attach the label titled “Remove Paper Before Reloadin g” to your printer. 1 Carefully remove the label from its backing shee t.
Step 3: Loading P ape r into the Pr inter Before loading paper into the printer, you will want to raise the pape r supports located behi nd the Paper Input Bin and the Paper Output Bin. Using pape r supports ca n help preve nt unwan ted paper curl and paper jams.
Step 4: Conne cting the P arallel Cab le You will need to conn ect a parallel cabl e (purchased separately ) between your HP LaserJet 6L Printer and Compan ion. Note For best result s, it is imperative that you use a high-qua lity IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cabl e, such as the HP LaserJet cable, bet ween the printe r and com puter.
Step 5: Connecting the Interf ace Cable 1 Plug the interface cable that came with your printing solution into the To PC Connector on the HP LaserJ et Companio n.
Installing the HP La serJet 6L Printer and Comp anion Usin g CD-R OM The HP LaserJ et 6L Prin ter and Compan ion CD-ROM installs the drivers and the P aperP or t for HP software onto your computer’ s hard drive. The CD-ROM contains software solutions that suppor t both Windows 3.
Making Fl opp y Disk s Using the MakeDisk Utility If you do not hav e a CD-ROM drive, you can make a set of so ftware installati on disks from the compa ct disc if you have access to a CD-ROM driv e. Y ou will need a maximum of 10 b lank 1.4 MB flopp y disks.
Installing Softw are Fr om Disks The f ollowing section lists sev eral diff erent methods of installat ion. Use the meth od that is appropr iate for your computer system. Standard Installation f or Windows 95 This setup ins talls the HP LaserJ et Printer and Compani on software for Windows 95.
Custom V ersus T ypical Installa tion When inst alling software for the HP LaserJet 6L Printer and Compani on, you may see a dialo g bo x asking if you prefer a T ypical or a Custom installati on. The T ypical installatio n installs all of the HP recomme nded software.
T esting the In stallation After completin g the setu p process, test your HP LaserJ et 6L print er , HP LaserJet Companio n, and the P aperP or t software to ensure the setup was successful.
To test the Companion’s installation Note Bef ore testing the Companio n’ s installation, see the precau tions listed in chapter 3, “Before Using the HP LaserJet Companio n.” 1 Raise the paper tra y and paper suppor ts. 2 Place a docum ent, face forw ard and top down, in the paper tra y .
4 Place the document in the paper tray again , f ace f orward and top down, and adjus t the paper edge guid es. 5 Press [T o[PC] . The f eed mechanism will pull the page through the HP LaserJet Companio n.
Uninstall ing the Software If necessa r y , you can remov e the HP Las erJet Compani on and the P aperP or t software comp onents and references from your computer . To un install the software 1 F rom the P aperP or t program group in Windows, double-click the Uninstall HP LaserJet Compan ion ico n.
Using O nline Help When you installed y our HP LaserJet 6L Printer and Companion software, y ou also inst alled online help. Onlin e help cont ains detailed procedures that guide you through any task you want to perform with your printer . It provides informat ion that is sp ecific to the current prin ting task.
Installing Me mor y Car ds (DRAM) Your HP LaserJet 6L printer is capa ble of acceptin g any 70ns or faster (such as a 50ns), 5V, DRAM memory card meet ing JEIDA specificatio ns. Hewlet t-Packar d offers 1- , 2-, and 4-M B DRAM memory cards. Note Some printer drivers have an adjustable memory setting.
2 Printing Bef ore Printing It is impor tan t that you beco me f amiliar with y our pri nter’ s front panel. The F ront P anel consist s of one button and three indicator lights.
The Front P anel Use the F ront P anel to deter mine the status of your pr inter and to accomplish the following tasks: Status Condition Cause Action No lights are on or blinking. Prin ter is in SleepMode or power has been disconne cted. If you wish to print, press and release the F ront P ane l button or send the job to prin t.
Selectin g Print Media The type of media you select affects pr inter performance and prin t quality . Selecting Media T ypes If av ailable in your area, it is recommended that you use HP LaserJet or HP Multipur pose pape r (since it has been designed specific ally f or use with your printer) or paper meeting HP’ s specifications.
Selecting the O utput P ape r P ath Caution To avoid pape r jams, do not switch the Paper Path Leve r once printing begins. 1 Set the Paper Path Leve r to the upper position to use the Paper Output Bin. By doing so, the sheets will stack in the correct order.
Using the Single -Sheet Input Slot You can print one sheet of print media at a time witho ut unloading the Paper Inpu t Bin. To do so, you will need to load one sheet into the Single-Sheet Input Slot . The printe r will take from the Single -Sheet Input Slot bef ore it tak es from the Input Bin.
Printing on Letterh ead an d En velo pes Letterhead 1 If you are printing a shee t of letterhead foll owed by regular sheets of paper, plac e a she et of letterhead into the (A) Single -Sheet Input Slot and regular she ets of paper into the (B) Paper Input Bin.
Printing T ask s Y our HP LaserJ et 6L Prin ter’ s capabiliti es include duplex pr inting, pausing between pages, and stopping a print job . Y ou can also reset your printer if nec essar y . Printing on Bo th Sides (Du ple xing) When you print on both sides of a she et, you ma y notice a difference in the wa y the pri nter perf or ms.
P ausing Y our Printer Between P ages Occasionally , you ma y need the printer to paus e so that you can load special media , such as lett erhead. If you spec ify Manual F eed in your software, the printer will pause before the first page and between each page you prin t.
Printing on Special Med ia Y our pr inter is designed to pr int on a variety of media, including transparencies, envelopes, and cus tom-made paper . It is recommen ded that you use HP media or media meet ing HP’ s spec ifications.
Managing HP LaserJet T oner Car tridg es It is recommended that you use HP LaserJ et ton er car tr idges. HP has designed the pr inter , toner car tridge, and toner formula to work together to give you opti mal image quality from your pr inter .
3 Using the HP Las erJet Com panion Bef ore Using the HP La serJet Compan ion The HP LaserJ et Compan ion can copy and scan various types of items, from business cards (2 by 3.
Using the Direct Copy Fe ature The Direct Copy f eature allows you to prin t single copie s of a docu ment directly from your HP LaserJet Compan ion to your printer with or without your compu ter tur ned on . T o make direct cop ies, y our pri nter must be directly connect ed to y our HP LaserJet Companio n.
3 Press [T o[Printer] . The docu ment f eeds throug h the HP LaserJet Compan ion, and your printer pr ints a copy . If y ou need to stop the copy , press [T o[Printer] again. T o remov e the document, see “Clearin g P aper Jams from the HP Lase rJet Companion” in chapter 5.
Using the HP La serJet Com panio n Copier So ftware The HP LaserJet Compani on Copier sof tware works much like a photocopie r in that it allows you to enlarge or reduc e the image, control the brig htness and contrast, con trol the number of cop ies made of an item, and coll ate copies.
To adjust the copy size and quality 1 In the HP Lase rJet Companio n Copier screen, click Fit to Page to create the biggest represent ation of the image pos sible without distor ting the image. - Or - Drag the Sca le slider to adjus t the size of the scanned image .
To print the cop ies 1 T ype the number of copie s to print in the Copies field. 2 Select whic h pages you want to pri nt in the Rang e of P ages field. 3 If you se lect a range of page s and more than one cop y , you can sele ct Collate to print the copie s into sets.
Scann ing Docume nts to Y our Compute r These procedures desc ribe scannin g a document and sending the image to your computer , which is the first step to f axi ng, filing, and using the OCR software. To scan a do cument 1 Raise the pape r tra y and pape r suppor ts.
Using Fax Links Y ou can scan an item into the P aperP or t software, add annotati ons, and f ax the item provided that your computer has access to a f ax modem and f ax software. Note F or inf or mation on links, see P aperP or t Help. To send items using the fax link 1 In Desktop View , select the item you want to f ax.
Using Ele ctr on ic Folders After scanning an item to your co mputer , you can file it in elec tronic f olders in the P aperP or t software. Filing Items in Folders The P aperP or t sof tware provides you with an initi al set of f olders tha t appea rs in a column down the left side of Desktop View .
Displaying Items in Folder s The content s of a f older are always dis pla yed in the order in which they appeared when you last opene d the folder . To display items in a folder Click the f older icon. Thumbna ils of the contents of the folder are display ed on the Desktop.
Editing Sca nned Imag es Using O CR Links Once text is scanned into the P aperP or t software, the text becomes an image that cannot be edited . Howe v er , the P aperP or t software has optical characte r recognition (OCR) software to process scanned text when using a W ord Processin g or Spreadsheet link icon .
The P aperP or t sof tware ca n proces s te xt with the OCR software and then place the editable te xt on the Clipboard. Y ou can pas te the text into another applic ation, su ch as a word proces sor. To process text using the “Cop y As Text” command 1 In Desktop View , selec t an ite m.
Adjustin g Cop y an d Scan Qu ality The HP LaserJ et Compan ion Settings utilit y allows you to control the quality of the copied and scanned images, including doc uments copied by the Direct Copy f eatu re.
Setting Cus tom Resolution and Bit De pth If you are using the Custom mode, y ou can select the resolu tion and bit depth of the scan. To set the resolutio n and bit dep th 1 Click Modify . 2 Select the resolution you want. • 150 dots per inch (dpi)—Produc es a smalle r file size and faster scan.
4 W orking in the P aperP or t Softw are General Features The P aperP or t software allows you to find, annotate, and organize scanned items . Y ou can also elec tronically link scanned docu ments to other applications suc h as f ax, electronic mail (e-mail), and word processing applic ations.
A Command Bar B Folders C Link Bar D Status Bar To switch between Deskto p View and Page View • Click Desktop or Page on the Command Bar. • From the View menu, choose Page View or Desktop View . • In Desktop View, doub le-click an item to display that item in Page View.
The Command Ba r The buttons on the Command Bar provide quick access to v arious commands on the menus. Some of the buttons are not av ailable in both views. Icon Description Icon Description Desktop —Switc hes from P age View to Desktop Vie w. A vailab le only in P age View .
Setting Pre ferences Y ou can customize the P aperP or t software so it displays acc ording to your pref erences . To select prefer ences 1 F rom the Edit menu, choose Preferences . The P aperP or t Preferences dialog box appears. 2 Click the Desktop icon.
A utoma tic Saving Ev er y item in the P aperP or t software is automatic ally sav ed as soon as you sc an it. Any changes that you mak e to an item, such as adding a note or giv ing an item a new title, are automa tically sav ed as well.
Rotating or Flipping an Item Rotate a page in 90-degree incremen ts or flip it in 180 degree increments to change the direction of an image on the page.
Undoing an Action T o undo the last actio n you made in the P aperP or t software, from the Edit menu, choose Undo . F or example, if you move a thumbnail on the Desktop, choose Undo Move , and the thumbnail will mov e back to its original location.
W orking in Desktop View Desktop View provides an ov erall view of P aperP or t items and stacks . Each item in Des ktop Vie w is shown as a thumbna il (an icon representing a scanned item). Selecting Items Bef ore perf orming an actio n on an item, such as moving it or prin ting it, you must select the item.
Moving and Arranging Items If y ou would like to organize the items in Desktop View , you can either mov e each thumbnail with the mouse or use the P aperP or t software’ s Arrange f eature. T o mov e an item, drag it to a new loca tion in the Desktop View .
W orking with Stacks In the P aperP or t software, a stack is an item with multiple pages. Use the stack f eature to organize multipage documents. When you use the automatic document f eeder to scan a document, the document will appear as a multipage stack in Desktop View .
Navigating Within a Stack T o mov e between pages in a stack, select the stack and click the arrows on the scroll bar (P age Navigator) below the stack. T o mov e to a sp ecific page in a stack, click the middle of the P age Navigator scroll bar to bring up the Go T o P age dialo g box or choose Go T o P age from the Page menu.
Reordering P age s in a Stack After creatin g a stack, y ou can reorder the page s. To reor der the pages in a stack 1 In Desktop View , select the stack. 2 F rom the Desktop menu, choose Reorder . A dialog box displa ys the current order of the pages in the stack.
To cop y a page in a stack 1 In Desktop View , sel ect the stack. 2 Use the P age Navigator to mov e the page you want to cop y to the top of the stack. 3 F rom the Desktop menu, choose Duplicate Current P age . A dupli cate of the selected item appears as a new , untitled item in Desktop View .
W orking in P age Vie w P age View displays an item one page at a time and allows you to read and add anno tations to a page. Use the Navigators to display other pages of a stack, see other items, or enlarge the image. A Zoom Navigator —Click the “minus” and “plus” magn ifying glasses to reduce or enlarge the image .
Changin g the Display Size of an Item Use the Zoom Navigator or Zoom comma nds from the View menu to zoom in and display the details of a page, or zoom out and make the page smaller on the screen while in P age View . The page magnification is shown in the status bar in P age View .
The P aperP or t Viewer Y ou can share P aperP or t items, including contracts, budgets, repor ts, and letters, with others who do not own P aperP or t software.

HP LaserJet 6L Printer Operation Pr oblems Printing a S elf-T est P age A self-test page ca n be useful in identifying your printer’ s configu ration and to ensure that your printer is work ing proper ly . To prin t a self-test page 1 Make sure that the Ready light is on and all other lights are off.
Clearing P aper Jams from Y our Printer Occasionally , pape r can become jamme d while printing. The following lis t shows some possible caus es: • The paper was loade d improperly. • The Paper Path Lever was adjus ted while a job was printing. • The Printer Door was opene d while a job was printing.
P aper Will No t Feed into the Printe r If the print media does not feed into your printer, briefly press and releas e the Front Panel button. The printer will again attempt to feed the media .
Printer Me ssages If y ou are having problems with your pr inter , check the F ront P anel Indicator lights. Deter mine their status, then use the f ollowing table to help pinpo int and solv e printer problems. Symptom Possible Cause Recommended Action The printer isn’t responding afte r “print” is select ed in the softwa re.

HP LaserJet Companion Operation Pr oblems Scanner Will Not Scan If the HP Lase rJet Companion is unable to scan, try the f ollowing: • Ensure that the interface cable that was shipped with your HP LaserJet Companion is connected to your computer’s parallel port and to the To PC connector on the HP Las erJet Companion.
• If you still encounter com munication problems after ve rifying that the parallel port is con figured for bidirectional comm unication, there might be a conflict with other software your computer.
Clearing P aper Jams fr om the HP Las erJet Companio n The HP LaserJet Companio n will not automatically stop when a page misfeeds or jams. To remo ve paper 1 Press [To[PC] or [To[Printer] during a scan to stop the scan. If scanning more than one page , remove any additional pages from the paper tray.
Compan ion Error Messages When a problem occurs, an error message ma y be display ed on your computer . This section explains what to do if you see one of these messages. Symptom Category Recommende d Action An unsuccessful appli cation e xit has left Windo ws in an unstab le state.

HP LaserJet 6L Printer and Companion Installation Pr oblems If you are having installa tion problems, check the f ollowing table. Also , you can ref er to online help by selecting Help on your menu bar . Symptom Recommended Actio n Window message dur ing installation reads : “File in Use.
Solving HP LaserJet 6L Print Quality Pr ob lems Use the f ollowing tab le to help pinpoint and solve print quality problems. Symptom Pos sible Cause Recommended Actio n Print is fade d or you notice a block of vertically aligned white streaks. The toner car tridge may be getti ng low on toner .
Symptom Possi ble Cause Recommended Action Horizontally aligned black streaks or smears appear. The toner car tridge may not be instal led properly . The toner car tridge may be def ective and need replacing. Printer may need repair . Remov e the car tridge and reinser t it.
Symptom Pos sible Cause Recommended Actio n Background scatter appears on a printed page. Bac kground sc atter results from bits of toner distrib uted on the front or back of a printed page. Backg round scatter often is isolated to a specific area of the page.
Symptom Possi ble Cause Recommended Action The bottom of the page is blank or part of a graphic’s image is cut off. Y our page ma y be too comple x f or the standard printer memor y . Set the resolution to 300 dpi through your so ftware or printer driv er .
Symptom Pos sible Cause Recommended Actio n Blank Pages (All Pages) The toner car tridge may be improp erly installed. The toner car tridge may be compl etely out of toner . The printer may need to be ser vice d. Mak e sure y ou remov ed the entire length of the sealing tape from the toner car tridge before y ou installed it.
Solving Scanned Image Pr oblems Symptom Recommended Actio n Scanned images are too light or too dark. Adjust the brightness sensitivity in the Paper P or t software settings. See “Adjusting Copy and Scan Quality” in chapter 3. Scanned images have unwa nted lines through them.
Symptom Recommended Action Paper in the printer is large enough to print the scanned item, but the image is printed on two pages. The HP LaserJet Companion has a default of Letter (8.5 by 11 inches , 21.6 by 27.9 cm) or A4 siz e (210 x 297 mm) paper .
Recalibrating the HP LaserJet Companion Recalibrating the HP LaserJet Compani on fine-tunes the amount of blac k and white that will appear on the scanned image.
Solving HP LaserJet Companion Links Pr ob lems Symptom Recommended Action Links in the Pap erPort software do not appear (Application link does not appear on the PaperPo rt desktop). If the link is to an e-mail application, see the “Missing E-mail Links” section later in this table.
Symptom Recommended Actio n Lotus cc:Mail link icon does not appear. Contact y our e-mail system administrator . The link to Lotus cc:Mail requires a Lotus cc:Mail file called VIM (Vir tual Interf ace f or Messaging). NO TE : VIM files were not shipped with Lotus cc:Mail v ersions prior to 2.

Solving Har d-to-Resolve Prob lems The f ollowing instr uctions will help you troub les hoot Windows prin ting problems usin g DOS. Note Bef ore troubleshooting from DOS, make sure your printer can print a self-test page. (See “Prin ting a Self-T est P age” ear lier in this chap ter .
Printer Sta tus Response Solution (s) Printer is not responding. Command prompt (c:) returned. Disconnect , then reconnect the parallel cable at both ends. Ensure a direct con nection to the printer . Hold down CTRL , then press and release Break to free the k e yboard.
Maintenance To prevent excessive wear and preserve print quality, kee p your printer and scanner free of excess ive dust and debris. Cleaning Y our HP Lase rJet 6L Pr inter Note If you notice exc essive amounts of toner inside your printer, your toner cartridge may be defective.
Cleaning Y our HP LaserJet Compa nion You might need to clean the HP LaserJet Compan ion after sca nning approximately ten pages of newsprint, if the ink on an item can be smudged with your hand, or if you scan items that have excessive amounts of dirt or dus t on them.
