1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the printer b uttons to turn t he printer on and off and cancel a p rint job. The p rinter lights give you visual cues about the statu s of the printer.
Power butto n and li ght Use the Power butt on to turn the printer on and off. It can take a few seconds f or the printer to turn on af ter you press the Power but ton. 1 Power button and light The Power light fla shes when the print er is processing.
Cancel button The printer has a Ca ncel button . 1 Cancel button Pressing the Cancel butto n cancels the current print job or print cartridge a lignment job .
Unfold the paper trays To unfold the paper trays 1. Raise the printe r cover. 2. Lower the input tray. 3. Lower the output t ray. Chapter 3 12 Get started Get starte d.
4. Pull out the outp ut-tray extension , and then un fold the output -tray exten sion stop. 5. Lower the printer cover. Input tray The input tray h olds paper or other media.
Paper guide Print on differe nt sizes of media by slid ing the paper guid e to the right or t o the left. Output tray Printed pages are deposited in th e output t ray. 1 Output tray Raise the print er cover and the outp ut tray to load paper or other me dia.
Fold the pape r trays To fold the pa per trays 1. Remove paper o r other media from the paper trays. 2. Raise the pr inter cover. 3. Fold the output-tray exte nsion stop, and then pu sh the output-tray exten sion into the output tray.
4. Raise the o utput tray. 5. Raise t he input tray . 6. Reach unde rneath the i nput tray, and t hen lift the tray until it lo cks into place . 7. Lower the printer cover.
Print cartridges Three print cartri dges can be used with the printer. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-col or print cartridge 3 Photo print cartridge For information a bout using the prin t cartridges, .

Ink-backup mode output Printing in ink-backup mode slows the print er and affects the quality of printouts. Installed print cartridge Result Black print cartridge Colors print as grayscale. Tri-color print cartri dge Colors print but black is gr ayed and is not a true black.
4 Connect the printer The printer con nects to the compu ter with a universal serial b us (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 co mpatible cable. For instructio ns about connecting the printer with a USB cable, see the Setup Guid e that came with the p rinter.
5 Print photos The printer softw are offers several featu res that make pri nting digital p hotos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to prin t photos Print a borderless photo .
5. Place the photo pap er in the right side o f the input tra y. The side to be print ed on should face dow n and the short edge sho uld point tow ards the printer. If you are using pho to paper that has a t ear-off tab, verify th at the tab is pointi ng away from the printe r in the input tray.
5. If necessary, cha nge the HP Re al Life Te chnologie s photo fix setting. 6. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and the n click OK . If you printed on photo paper w ith a tear-off tab , remove the tab to make th e document completely borde rless.
8. Slide the pa per guide firmly agai nst the edge of the paper. 1 Small photos 2 Large photos 9. Lower the printer cover. Print NOTE: If your soft ware program incl udes a photo pri nting feature, follow t he instructions that are provided wit h the software prog ram.
4. In the Printin g Shortcuts list, click Photo Printing-with w hite bord ers , and then select the following op tions: • Print Quality : Normal or Best NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Features tab, and then click Maximum dpi in t he Print Quality drop-down lis t.
To install th e photo print car tridge ▲ To install t he photo print cartridge, remove t he black print cartri dge from the printer, and then install the ph oto print cart ridge in the rig ht side of the print cartridge cra dle. NOTE: To learn how to install a p rint cartridge, see Installation instructions .
Storage • Keep unused photo paper in a sealed pl astic bag. Stor e the packaged p hoto paper on a flat su rface in a cool pl ace. • When you a re ready to print , remove only the paper that you plan to use im mediately from the pl astic bag. Wh en you have f inished print ing, return any unused ph oto paper to the plastic bag .

7. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against t he edge of th e paper. 8. Lower the printer cover. Print 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
5. Push the paper i nto the printer until it stops. NOTE: Depending on th e paper size, the pap er might extend over th e edge of the tray. 6. Lower the output t ray. 7. Slide the pa per guide firmly agai nst the edge of the paper. 8. Lower the printer cover.
Prepare to pri nt 1. Raise the pr inter cover. 2. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft. 3. Raise the ou tput tray. 4. Place plain pa per in the right side of the input t ray. The side to be p rinted on sho uld face down. NOTE: If you are usi ng letterhea d paper, the le tterhead shou ld face down and point toward t he printer.
Print envelopes Guidel ines • Avoid using envelopes t hat have the f ollowing featu res: • Clasps or window s • Thick, i rregular, or curled edg es • Shiny or embossed coatin gs • Wrinkle s, tears, or other damage • You can pri nt a single envelope or multiple envelo pes.
Print postcards Guidelines Do not exceed the p aper tray capacity: 20 po stcards. Prepare to pri nt 1. Raise the pr inter cover. 2. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft. 3. Raise the output tray, and then rem ove all paper from the in put tray.
Print index cards and other small media Guidel ines Do not exceed the pap er tray capacity: 20 ca rds. Prepare to p rint 1. Raise the printe r cover. 2. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left. 3. Raise the out put tray, and then re move all paper from th e input tray.
Print labels Guidelines • Use only paper, plast ic, or clear labels t hat are designed specifically fo r inkjet print ers. • Use only full sheets of la bels. • Avoid using labels th at are sticky, wrinkled, or pu lling away from the protec tive backing.
3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click General Ev eryday Printing , and th en speci fy the foll owing print settings: • Paper Type : Plain paper • Paper Size : An appropriate p aper size 4. Click OK . Use the What's Th is? he lp to learn about the fea tures that ap pear in the Printe r Properties dialog box.
8. Lower the printer cover. Print 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab, and then specify th e print setting s in the order sh own belo w: • Size : 5x7in. • Paper Type : Click More , click Specialty Paper s , and then click HP CD/DVD Tattoo .

6. Lower the outpu t tray. 7. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against t he edge of th e paper. 8. Lower the printer cover. Print 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printin g Shortcuts list, click Tw o-sided (Duplex) Pri nting .
Print posters Guidel ines • For poster print ing, sections o f the post er are aut omatical ly arranged on indi vidual sheets that can be taped togethe r. After the section s of a poster have been printed, trim the edges o f the sheets and t ape the sheets toge ther.
Print 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab, and then specify the f ollowing p rint settings: • Paper Type : Plain paper • Orientation : Portrait or Landscape • Size : An appropriat e paper size 3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Prin ter Features .

To set the page orde r 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. Click Document Options , and then click Layout Options . 4. Select one of th e following Page Or der options: • Front to back : Prints th e first page of the docu ment last.
Two-sided printing Use two-sided printing, also called duplexing, to pr int on both si des of the paper. Prin ting on both side s of the p aper is not only econo mical, but environmen tally conscious as w ell. To prin t a two- sided doc ument 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box .
4. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and the n click OK . Before the docum ent prints, a p review is displaye d. 5. Do one of th e following: • Click OK to prin t the do cument . • Click Cancel t o cancel the print job . Adjust the prin t settings as needed before printin g the docu ment.
Print quality settings • Fast Draft produ ces draft-quali ty output at the fastest print ing speed, whil e using th e least amount of ink. • Fast Norm al produces higher qua lity output than the Fast Draft se tting and prin ts more qui ckly than the Normal setti ng.
To print in Ma ximum dpi mode 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Paper Type drop-down list, click Mor e , and then select the appropri ate paper type. 4. In the Print Quality drop-down list, click Maximum d pi .
5. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK . The printer print s the odd-numbere d pages first. 6. After the od d-numbered pag es have been pri nted, reload t he printed pages, with t he printed side faci ng up according to the document o rientation, portrait or landscap e.
8 Printer software • Make the HP Prin ter the defa ult printer . • Set the default print set tings for al l documents. • Use the Printer Properties dialog box to select printing op tions. • Use the What's This? help to learn more ab out specific p rint sett ings.
To save time when print ing, set the defau lt print settings t o options that you use often. That way, you do not h ave to specify the option s every time you use the pr inter. To change the defa ult print settings 1. Double-click the HP D igital Imagin g Monitor icon on the right side of t he Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to t he Printer Propertie s dialog box can va ry dependi ng on the software progr am you are usin g. What's This? help Use the What's Th is? help to learn about the f eatures tha t you see on the Print er Properties dialog box.
Download printer software updates Download t he latest printer softw are update every few m onths to ensure you h ave the latest features and improvements. To download a printer softwar e update 1. Make sure you are connected to the Intern et. 2. From the Wi ndows Start menu, click Programs or All Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Update .

4. Slide the print cart ridge out of t he cradle. 1 Press the Power button 2 Open the printer cover 3 Push down on the print cartridge 4 Slide the print cartridge out of the cradle 5. Remove the rep lacement pr int cartridge from its packaging an d carefully remo ve the plastic tape.
1 Ink nozzles 2 Copper contacts 6. Slide the print cart ridge firmly int o the cradle at a slig ht upward angle until you feel resistance. 7. Push the cartridge into the crad le. You hear a snap when the print ca rtridge is correctl y positioned. 8. Close the printer cover.
To align pri nt cartridges 1. Load Letter o r A4 unused plain white paper in the p aper tray. 2. Open the printer Toolbox . 3. Click Align the Print Cartridges . 4. Click Align , and then foll ow the on screen instructio ns. The HP Printer prints a test page, aligns the p rint cartridges, and calibrates the printer.
View estimated ink levels Follow these i nstructions to view t he estimated i nk levels of the pri nt cartridges that are installed in the prin ter: NOTE: Ink from the cartridg es is used in the print.
Manually clean print cartridges If the HP Printer is used in a dusty environm ent, a small amoun t of debris can accumu late on the print cart ridge contacts. Th is debris can cause ink streaks on print ed pages. The problem can be corrected by manually cleaning the p rint cartrid ge contacts.
Maintain print cartridges Follow t hese guidelines t o maintain and store HP p rint cartridges and to ensure consistent print qua lity. • Print cartridge storage an d handling • Print cartridge pr.
To remove the print ca rtridge from th e print cartridge protector 1. Press down and back on th e top of the prot ector to release the print cartridge. 2. Slide the print cart ridge out of t he protector. CAUTION: Do not drop the print cartridge. D ropping the pr int cartridge can damage it.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartri dge reorder number, see t h e printed docume ntation that ca me with the HP Printer. You can also use the so ftware that came w ith the HP Print er to find out the reorder number fo r the print cartridge.

"Print cartridge i s in the wron g slot" message If you recei ve this error message, th e print cartridge is installed in the wrong side of t he print cartrid ge cradle . Follo w the instruction s in " Print cartridge is in the wron g slot" message to resolve the pro blem.
Solution: To resolve the problem 1. Make sure that no USB de vices other than the pri nter, the keyboa rd, and the mouse are connect ed to the co mputer. 2. Disconnect and recon nect the U SB cable. 3. Make sure that the prin ter is connected di rectly to a USB port on the computer (instead of throug h a USB hub).
Printer name does not appear Solution: If th e printer software seem s to instal l correctly, but the printer na me does not appear in th e list of printe rs when you cl ick Print on the File me nu or in the Printe rs folder in Cont rol Panel, try reinstalling t he printer softw are.
• If the Power light is on , the printer is ei ther printing or ready to print. • If the Power light is off , the prin ter is off. • If the Power light is flashing , see th e following i nformation.
• The printer is t u rned on. • The print cartri dges are the correc t print cartridges for th e printer and are properly installed. For more information, see Print cartridges and Inst allation i nstructions . • The paper or ot her media is correctly load ed in the paper tray.
After resolving a p rint job th at is stalled in the print queu e, the print queue still mi ght not be clear. In t hat situatio n, you need to stop an d then restart the prin t service. To stop and res tart the print ser vice 1. For Window s 2000 an d Vista, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Administrative To ols .
Document prints slowly If the print er prints slowly, there coul d be several reasons. For mo re informatio n, check the follow ing topics: • Multiple so ftware progra ms are open • Complex docume.
Print cartridge problems If the printer slow s down or cannot pri nt, there could be a problem with t he print cartridge. For more informatio n, check the f ollowing topi cs: • Incorrect or missing .
If the Pow er light is flashing , visit HP Technica l Support at www.hp.com/support . Print cartridg e is faulty or not insta lled properly Cause: The printer cannot prin t if the print cartrid ges are faulty, or if t hey are not installed properl y. Solution: To resolve the problem 1.
a refilled or remanufa ctured print cartridge, or a ca rtridge that has been used in another print er, the ink level i ndicator will be inaccurate or una vailable.
Paper jam To clear a paper jam 1. Remove the pa per from the inpu t tray. 2. If you are pri nting labels, veri fy that a label did not become d etached from t he label sheet whil e passing through t he printer. 3. Turn off the pri nter. 4. Disconnect th e printer power cord f rom the elect r ical outlet.
Printer does no t feed paper Solution: Try one or more o f the follow ing soluti ons: • Reduce the numb er of sheets in the pap er tray. • Remove the paper f r om the paper t ray, and then reload it. • Use a differen t type of paper. Out-of-p aper message Follow the ap propriate steps for the condition tha t exists.
Photos do not print correctly If your photos do no t print correctly, check the paper tray or printer properti es. • Check the paper t ray • Check the printer propert ies Check the pa per tray 1. Verify that t he photo pape r is placed i n the paper tray w ith the side to be printed on facing down.
Image is p rinted at an angl e Verify that no problem exi sts with the sour ce ima ge. For example, if you are prin ting a scanned image, verify that the i mage was not croo ked when it wa s scanned. If the problem i s not caused by the sou rce image, foll ow these steps: 1.
For small photo p aper If the print out has an unwant ed border, try the following solutions: • Align the print cartridge s . • Open the Printe r Properties dialog box , click the Features tab, an.
Print quality is poor If you are having p roblems with print qua lity, try the solu tions in this section and observe the follow ing guidelin es: • Replace refilled or empty cartridges. • Check the device settings to m ake sure that the pr int mode and pape r selection i s correct for th e paper a nd the task.
