1 Connect the printer port Buttons and lights Use the prin ter buttons to turn the pr inter on and of f, cancel a print job, and restart a job. The printer light s give you visual cues about the stat us of the printer.
Power butto n and li ght Use the Power button to turn th e prin ter on a nd off. It can ta ke a fe w seconds for the printer to tur n on after yo u press the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light fla shes when the print e r is processing.
Resume bu tton and light The Resume ligh t flashes when an action is required, such as loading paper or cl earing a paper jam. Whe n the problem is solved, press the Resume button to continue printing. 1 Resume button and ligh t Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cartridg e Status lights are loca ted on the control pane l.
1 Tri-color print cartrid ge light 2 Black print cartridge light 1. The left statu s light represents the tri -color print cartridge, which is install ed in the left side of the prin t cartridge carriage. • The light is on and solid when the tri-color print cartridg e is low on ink.
2. Pull out the t ray extension. 3. If you are printing in th e Fast Draft mode, fold out t he tray extension stop. Use the p aper tray Print on different sizes of media by sliding the pape r guide to the right or to t h e left. The printer deposits pri nted pages on the top of th e paper tray.
Fold the paper tr ay To fold the paper tray 1. Remove p aper or other media from the paper tray . 2. If the tray extensio n stop is folded out, fold it back in.
Print cartridges Two print cartridg es can be used with the p rinter. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-col or print cartridge NOTE: Your printer m ight be packaged with only a tri-color print cartridge. For better results, instal l a black print cartridge in addit ion to the tri-color print cartri dge.
To remo ve plas tic tape from a p rint car tridge ▲ Hold the print cartridge so that the copper st rips are on the bottom and facing toward the prin ter, and t hen ca refully re move the pl astic ta pe. 1 Remove p lastic tape CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge ink no zzles or copper cont acts.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connects t o the computer with a universa l serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best prin ting performance, use a USB 2.0 compatible cable. For instructions ab out connecting the printer with a USB cable, see the Start Here guide that came with the printer.
5 Print photos The printer sof tware offers several features that ma ke printing digital photo s easier and improve p hoto quality. Learn how to pri nt photos Print borderless ph otos . 3. Place the phot o paper in the right side of the t r ay. The side to be printed on shoul d face down and th e short edge should po int towards the printer. 4. Push the paper into th e printer un til it stops . 5. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against the edge of the paper.
Guidel ines • For maximum fade resistan ce, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. • Verify that the plain paper that you are usin g is flat. • Do not exceed the paper tray ca pacity: 80 sheets of paper. Prepare to p rint 1. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left.
4. In the Printin g Shortcuts list, click Photo Printi ng-with w hite borde rs , and then select the following op tions: • Print Quality : Normal or Best NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advan ced tab, and then select Enabled from the Maximum d pi drop-down list.

HP Everyday Photo Paper is designed to create qu ality photos w ith less in k. NOTE: For higher-quali ty photos, use HP Advanced Photo Pap er and set the print resolution to Best or Maximu m dpi . Fo r more informatio n on enabling the maximum dpi mode, se e Maximum dpi .

Print 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printin g Shortcuts list, click General Everyd ay Printing , and then specify the followin g print settin gs: • Paper Type : Plain paper • Paper Size : An appropriate pa per size 4.
3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Presentation Pr inting , and th en specify the following pri n t settings: • Paper Type : Plain paper • Paper Size : An appropriate p aper size 4. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK .
Print postcards Guidelines Do not exceed the p a per tray capacity: 20 postcards. Prepare to pri nt 1. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft. 2. Place th e cards in th e right side o f the tray. The side to be printed on shoul d face down and the sho rt edge should point toward the printer.
3. Push the card s into the pri nter until they stop. 4. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against the edg e of the cards. Print 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab, and then specif y the following print se ttings: • Paper Type : Plain paper • Size : An appropriate card size 3.

Print greeting cards Greet ing card s • Unfold pref olded cards, and then place them in the paper tray. • For great results, use H P Greeting Card Pap er. • Do not excee d the pa per tray cap acity: 20 cards. Prepare to pri nt 1. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft.
For example, w h en a four-page booklet is print ed on both sides of the paper, t he pages are reordered and printed like this: Guidel ines Do not exceed the pap er tray capacity: 80 sheet s of paper. Prepare to p rint 1. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left.

7 Printing tips Learn how to use printing shortcuts, select a paper type, change th e print resolution, set the page order, prin t multiple pages on a single shee t, preview a documen t, and use two - sided printing. Click any of the followi ng links: Check your printe r • Connect t he printer .
NOTE: When you sel ect a printing sh ortcut the appropriate printing options are automatically di splayed. You can leave t hem as is or chang e them. This section co ntains the follo wing topics: • .
To delete a printi ng shortcut 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click the pri nting shortc ut that you want to del e te. 4. Click Delete . The print ing shortcut is remo ved from the list.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up to 16 pages on a single sh eet of paper. 12 4 3 To print multiple pag es on a single shee t of paper 1.
4. In the Print In Graysca le drop-down list, select fr om the follow ing option s: • High Quality : uses all the available colors to print your photo in grayscale. This creates smoot h and natural shade s of gray. • Black In k Only : uses black ink to print your ph oto in grayscale.
To preview a printe d document 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show pr eview before printing check box. 4. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK . Before the docum ent prints, a preview is d isplayed.
Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskje t automatical ly chooses a print qua lity and speed setting d epending on the paper type setting you se lect. You can al so change the print quality setting to customize the speed an d quality o f the pr int process.
Printing in maxim um dpi takes longer than printing w ith other sett ings and requires a large amount of di sk space. To print in Ma ximum dpi mode 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. In the Printer Fe atures area, select Enabled from the Maximum dpi drop-down list.
To print a two -sided document with a tablet bi nding 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-sided printi ng drop-down list, click Manual . 4. Select the f ollow ing check boxes: • Flip Page s Up • Preserve L ayout 5.
To print a Web page 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tra y. 2. On the F ile menu in your Web brow ser, click Print . TIP: For best results, select HP Smart Web Printing on the File menu . A check mark appears when it is selected. The Print dialog box app ears.
8 Printer software Most print se ttings are auto matically handled by the so ftware application . You need t o change the se ttings manu ally only when you ch ange print qualit y, print on specific types of paper or transpare ncy film, or us e special fe atures.
To change the d efa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon on t he right side of t he Windows taskbar. 1 HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon The HP Solu tion Center is displayed. 2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , an d then click Printer Settings .
What's This? help Use What's Thi s? help to learn more about the available print ing options. To use What's Thi s? help 1. Move the cursor over the fe ature that you want to learn m ore about. 2. Click the right mou se button. The What's Thi s box is displayed.
9 Maintenance The HP Deskjet requires li ttle mainten ance. Y ou will nee d to replace, a lign, or clean your print cartridges from t ime to time. This section provides inst ructions for keeping the HP Deskjet in top working condition . Perform thes e simple mai ntenance procedure s as necessary.
• Printer documen tation: For a list of pr int cartridg e selection n umbers, see the reference guide t hat came with the printer. • Print Cartridge Information dialog b ox: For a lis t of print cartridg e selection numbers, open t he printer T oolbo x , click the Estimated Ink Levels tab, and then click the Print Cartridge Information button.
5. Remove the rep lacement pr int cartridge fro m its packaging an d carefully remove the plastic tape. Hol d the print cartridge so that the copper strip is on the botto m and facing tow ard the p rinter. 1 Remove plastic tape CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridg e ink nozzles or copp er contacts.

NOTE: Ink from the ca rtridges is used in the pri n ting process in a numbe r of diffe rent ways, includin g in the initialization process, which prepares t he device and cartrid ges for printing, a nd in printhead servicing, w hich keep s print nozzles clear and ink flowing smoothly.
Manually clean print cartridges CAUTION: Do not clean the print cartridge contacts unless you are having a problem with print qual ity and other me asures have not been succe ssful.
3. Repeat this process until no ink residue o r dust appears on t he swab. 4. Insert the print cartridge s in the HP Deskjet, a nd then close the cover. For more informatio n, see Replace prin t cartridges . Maintain print cartridges Follow th ese guidelines t o maintain and store HP print cartridges and to ensure consisten t print qual ity.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartri dge reorder number, see the printed do cumentation that came with the HP Deskj et. You can also use th e software that came with the HP Deskjet to f ind out the reorder number fo r the print cartridg e.

Print cartridg e problem message The printer cannot pri nt if the print cartridge s are faulty, or if they are not in stalled properly. If you recei v e a message stat ing there is a problem with a print cartridge, follow the instructions in Resolving pri nt cartridg e error messages to resol ve the problem.
Original HP ink d epleted Solution: Follow the pro mpts on the computer screen to cont inue or replace the indicated print cartridges. For m ore information, see Re place print cartridges . Ink levels might not be available for t he indicated print cartrid ges.
removed from each prin t cartridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridg e contacts, the p rinter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is in stalled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Prin ters folder or from the printer icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect al l applications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft W ord. To set the paper size in Micr osoft Word 1.
Installation pr ogram stops Cause: If the installation p rogram stops when i t looks for new hardw a re, one of t he following issue s is causing a communicat ion problem: • The USB cable is old or d efective. • Software, su ch as an antivirus program, i s running.
To resolve the problem 1. Disconnect the US B cable from the printer. 2. Disconnect the pow e r cord from the prin ter. 3. Wait approxi mately 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the pow e r cord to the printer. 5. Reconnect the USB cabl e to the printer. 6. If the “Unkno wn Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The prin ter lig hts indica te the p rinter sta tus. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights To resolve the pro blem that is causing the lights to flash, click the ap propriate link.
Power lig ht is flas hing 1 Power light If the Power light is flashing, the printer is preparing t o print. The light stops flashing w h en the printer ha s received al l data. Resume light is flashing 1 Resume light If the Resum e light is flashing, check th e following conditio ns: • The printer mi ght be out of pa per.
Both Power and R esume lights ar e flashing The printer mi ght need to be restarted. 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and t h en press the Power button to restart the printer. Proceed to step 2 if th e lights continue to flash. 2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
If one or both Print Cartridge Sta tus lights are on and flashin g • The light on the le ft blinks when the tri-co lor print cartridge (on the le ft) is the problem, the light on the right blinks when the black cartridge (on the ri ght) is the problem.
• Solution 3: Clear the pri nt queue • Solution 4: Check the pr inter cabl e connection • Solution 5: Verify the pri nter dr iver confi guration • Solution 6: Check if the prin ter is paused o.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your comput er to clear the print queue. To clear the pri nt queue 1. Restart your comput er. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check t he print q ueue.
After reconn ecting the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting th e product through a USB hub, make sure the hub is turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting d irectly to your computer. 5. If the pr oduct does not start printing automati cally, start another print j o b.
6. Check the drive r listed in th e Driver drop-down menu to verif y that the product is using the correct dri ver. The name of your product should be listed as the driver. 7. If the wrong driver is selected, select the correct driver from the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the print queue man ually Solution: Man ually clear the pri n t queue. To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software applicatio n is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the software applicat ion is the problem. To verify the so ftware applicatio n 1. Close the sof tware application an d reopen it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software application.
To increase pri nter speed, close all unnecessary software program s when printing. Complex docume nts, graphics , or photos are prin ting Documents contai ning graphics or photos print more slowly than text documents.
NOTE: In the procedures b elow, the "p roblem" cartri dge is identified by the blin king light. The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print ca rtridge (on the left) is the problem and the light on the right blinks w hen the black cartrid ge (on the right) is the problem.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the erro r has been resolved, then there is a pro blem with the bl ack print cartridge. • If the error has not been resolved, then there is a problem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have i dentified the problem cart ridge, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with your printer. Compatible p r int cartridges are list ed in the reference guide that came with your p rinter. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selecti on number, inst all a new print cartridge.
Try the followi ng solutions: • Solution 1: Turn the po wer off an d on • Solution 2: Clear an y paper ja ms • Solution 3 : Move the printer carriag e • Solution 4: Verify the pow er source • Solution 5: Re move and reinstall the prin t cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the po wer off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move th e printer carriage Solution: If the printer carria ge is still stuck, try moving it as described in the followin g procedure. To move the pr inter carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power cord from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify the power so urce Solution: Verify t hat the printer is pro perly connected to a suitable power source . To verify the p ower source 1. Verify that the computer and the p r inter have the correct power plug s depending on your country/regio n.
5. Remove the rear a ccess door. Press the handle to th e right, and then pull out the door. 6. Remove the paper jam from the back of the printer, and th en replace the rear access door securely.
Out of paper Try the followi ng solutions: • Solution 1: Make sure the pape r tray is no t empty • Solution 2: Check the rear door of the printer • Solution 3: Check the pa per • Solution 4: U.
5. Replace any pape r that is ripped, dusty, wr inkled, or be nt. If the pap er is curled, uncurl th e paper by gent ly bending it i n the opposit e direction of the curl or repl ace the paper. NOTE: Use plain paper in t he product unti l the issue is resolved.
Paper type Suggested paper size set tings Greeting-card papers Letter or A4 Index cards Appropriate listed card size (if listed sizes are not appropriate, you can specify a custom paper size) Inkjet p.
Make sure you have the following materials avai lable: • Lint-free clot h, or any soft material that w ill not come apart or leave f ibers. • Disti lled, fi ltered , or bottl ed water. To clean the ro llers 1. Turn off the p roduct and remove the power cord.
Paper wei ght The printer mi ght print on multiple sheets of paper a t once if the paper is under the recommended pa per weight. Use paper that is within the recommend ed specifications.
Problems with borderless documents If you are havi ng problems with printi ng borderless documents and p hotos, observe the guidelines and check the soluti ons in the following to pics: • Borderless.
Fading occu rs on the edges of a photo Verify that the pho to paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curled, place t he paper in a plastic bag a nd gently bend it in the opposite direction of the curl until th e paper lies flat. If the problem persists, then use phot o paper that is not curled.
Print quality is poor This section co ntains the follo wing topics: • Wrong, inaccu rate, or bleeding colors • Ink is not fillin g the text or graph ics completely • The printout has a horizonta.

If you are satisfi e d with the prin t quality, cont inue printing in ink-backup mode . Or, replace the missing print cartridge . For more information, see: • Ink-backup mode • Replace p rint cartridge s Cause: A print cart ridge was missing, and the produ ct was printi ng in ink-backu p mode.
Ink is not filling th e text or graphics complete ly Try the followi ng solutions to resolve the issue. So lutions are list ed in order, with the m o st likely solution f irst. If the first soluti on does not solve the pro blem, continue trying th e remaining solu tions until the issue is resolved.
NOTE: HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliab ility of non-HP supp lies. Printer service or repairs re quired as a result of using a non-HP supply w ill not be covered under warra nty. If you believe yo u purchased genuine HP print ca rtridges, go t o: www.
The print out has a horizo ntal band of dis tortio n near th e bott om of a borderl ess print Try the followin g solutions if your borderless prin t has a blurry band or line on the bottom of it. NOTE: For this issue, t here is not a problem w ith your ink suppli es.
Printouts have horizon t al streaks or lines Try the followin g solutions to reso lve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, wi th the most likely solution fi rst. If the f irst solution does not sol v e the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is re solved.
Cause: The print cartridge n ozzles needed to be clea ned. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the ne xt solution . Solution 5 : Check t he print ca tridges Solution: Print a self -test report to de termine if there is a problem w ith the prin t cartridges.
Printouts are faded or have dull colo rs Try the followin g solutions to reso lve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, wi th the most likely solution fi rst. If the f irst solution does not sol v e the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is re solved.
NOTE: Ink level warnings and indi cators provide estimate s for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning me ssage, consider ha ving a replacement cartridge availabl e to avoid possible print ing delays. You do not need to replace t he print ca rtridges until p rint qualit y becomes unacceptable.

If this di d not s olve th e issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Use a higher quality image Solution: Use a high er resolution image.
Printouts are slan ted or skewed Try the follow ing solutions if your printout does not appear straight on the page. • Solution 1: Make su re the paper is loaded correctly • Solution 2: Make sure .
Cause: Ink accumu lated inside the product, where t he back of the paper rest s during printing. If this di d not s olve th e issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Wait while the ink dries Solution: Wait at least thirty mi nutes f or the in k inside the prod uct to dry, then try the print jo b again.
If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the ne xt solution . Solution 3: Clean the rol lers Solution: Clean the rollers. Make sure you have the follo w ing material s available: • A lint-free cloth , or any soft materi al that will not com e apart or leave fibers.

Text and imag es are misaligned Solution: If t he text and images on your printout s are misaligned, then align the print cartridges. For more information, see Align print cartridges . Document is prin ted off-center or at an angle Solution: 1. Verify that th e paper is correctly placed in the in put tray.
