2 Getting to know your tablet Front Component Description (1) WWAN antennas (2)* (select models only) Send and receive wireless signals to communica te with wireless wide area networks (WWAN). (2) Front webcam Records video and captures still photographs.
Rear Component Description (1) Micro SD Card Reader/Micro SIM slot acce ss hole Allows you to insert the end of a paper clip to open the access door to insert or remove a micr o SD card or micro SIM module.
(7) Volume down button To decrease speaker volume, press the bottom edge of the button. (8) Regulatory information Displays r egulator y information (select models only).
Top Component Description (1) Audio-out (headphone) jack/Audio-in (microphone) jack Produces sound when connected to option al powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbud s, a headset, or television audio. Also connects an optional head set microphone.

Using the tablet's auto rotate lock feature To turn on your tablet's autorotate lock feature: ▲ Slide the autorotate swi tch on the top edge of the tablet. – or – 1. Swipe from the right ed ge of the touc h screen to display the charms, and then tap Settings .
Some updates may affect the way the tab let responds to optional software or external devices. Many updates provide security en hancements. Update the operating system and other software installed on the tablet as soon as the tablet is connected to the In ternet.
3 Connecting to a network Your tablet can travel with you wherever you go. But even at home, you can expl ore the globe and access information from millions of websites using your tablet and a wireless network connection. This chapter will help you ge t connected to that world.
NOTE: The term s wireless router and wireless access point are often used intercha ngeably. ● A large-scale WLAN , such as a corporat e or public WLAN, typic ally uses wireless access points that can accommodate a large number of comput ers and accessories and can separate critical network functions.
NOTE: It is recommended that you in itially connect your new wireless tablet to the router by us ing the network cable provided with the router. When th e tablet succ essfully connects to the Internet, disconnect the cable , and access the In ternet through yo ur wireless network.
NOTE: The functional ra nge (how far your wireless signals travel) de pends on WLAN implementation, router ma nufacture r, and interfe rence from othe r electronic device s or structural barriers such as walls and floors.
4. Insert the end of a paper clip into the Micro SIM slot acce ss hole (1) , and then open the access door (2) . 5. Insert the SIM into the SIM slot (3) , and then push t o lock it. – or – Push the SIM again to remove it from the SIM slot. 6. Close the access door.
Using Bluetooth wireles s devices A Bluetooth device provide s short-range wireless communications that rep lace the physical cable connections that traditionally link electr onic devices such as the .
4 Navigating using touch gestures Your tablet allows navig ation using touch gestures on the touch screen. Review the Window s 8 Basics guide included with your tablet. The guide provid es information on common tasks using the touch screen or an opti onal keyboard.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful fo r moving the pointer u p, down, left, or right on a page or image. ● Place two fingers on the screen and then drag them in an up, down, left, or right motion. Pinching/stretching Pinching and stre tching allows you to zoom in or out on images or text.
Rotating (select models only) Rotating allows you to turn i t ems such as photos. ● Anchor the forefinger of yo ur left hand on the object you want to rotate. Using your right hand, slide your forefinge r around in a swe eping motion from 1 2 o’clock to 3 o’cl ock.
Left-edge swipe The left-edge swipe reveals your ope n apps so that you can switch to them quickly. ● Gently swipe your finger inward from the left ed ge of the display b ezel to switch between ap ps. Without lifting your finger, swipe back toward the left edge to display all open apps.
2. Tap All apps to view available apps. Using the on-screen keyboard You may want to enter data int o a data field. This may be require d when you set up a wi reless network configuration or a weather reporting loca tion, or when you access user accounts on In ternet sites.

The digital p en uses inherent pressure sen sitivit y, so yo u can create a bolder stroke by pressing harder on the scre en with the digita l pen. Pres sure sensiti vity may not be ena bled or supported, depending on the application or program.
5 Multimedia Your tablet may include th e following: ● Integrated speaker(s) ● Integrated micropho ne(s) ● Integrated webcam(s) ● Preinstalled multimedia software ● Multimedia buttons or key.
To check the audio functions on yo ur tablet, follow these steps: 1. Swipe from the righ t edge of the to uch screen to display the charms, tap Search , and then tap the search box. 2. In the search box, type c , and th en tap Control Panel . 3. Tap Hardware and Sou nd , and then tap Sound .
6 Power management NOTE: Your tablet has a power bu tton. Shutting down the tablet CAUTION: Unsaved inform ation is lost when th e tablet shuts do wn. The shutdown comma nd closes all open programs, including the o perating system, and th en turns off the tablet.
When the tablet e xits Sleep, the tablet re tu rns to the screen where you stopped working. NOTE: If you have set a passw ord to be req uired on wake up, you must ente r your Window s password before th e tablet will return to the screen. Using the power meter and power settin gs The power meter is located on the Windows desktop.
Finding additional b attery information HP Support Assistant provides the too ls and information about the battery. To access batte r y information, tap the HP Support Assistant app on the Start screen, and th en tap Battery and performance .
NOTE: For a dditional information about the power meter, see Using the power meter and power settings on page 27 . If the tablet is on or in th e Sleep state, t he tabl et remains briefly in the Sleep state, and then shuts down and loses any unsaved information.
When you connect the tablet to e xternal AC power, the following events occur: ● The battery be gins to charge. ● If the tablet is turned on, th e power meter icon in the notific ation area ch anges appearance. When you disconne ct external AC pow er, the followi ng events occur : ● The tablet sw itches to batt ery power.
7 External cards and devices Using digital storage cards Digital storage cards pr ovide secure data storage and convenient data sharing. These cards are often used with digital medi a-equipped camera s and PDAs as well as wi th other computers .

● Use HP Password Manage r to store all of yo ur user na mes and passwords for all of your websites and applicatio ns . You can securely read th em in the future if th ey cannot be remembered.
There are two types of firewalls to consider: ● Host-bas ed firewalls—Softw are that pr otects only the computer it is installed on. ● Network-based firewalls—Installed between your DSL or cable modem a nd your home network to protect all the computers on the network.
9 Maintenance Cleaning your tablet Cleaning products Use the following produ cts to safely clean and d isinfect your tablet: ● Dimethyl benzyl ammoni um chloride 0.3 pe rcent maximum concentratio n (For example: germicidal disposable wipe s. These wipes come in a variety of brand n a mes.
Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you up date your programs and driver s on a regular basis with the la test versions. Go to http://www.hp.com/ support to download the l a test versions. You can also register to receive automatic update n otifications when they become available.
10 Backup and recovery To protect your information, us e Windows backup and restore utilitie s to back up i ndividual files and folders, back up your entire ha rd drive, create system repair medi a (select models only) by using an optional external flash drive, or an optional exter nal optical drive, or create system restore points.
NOTE: Be sure that the table t is connected to AC power before you start the backu p process. NOTE: The backup pro cess may take over an hour, depen ding on file size and the speed of the tablet. 1. Swipe from the righ t edge of the to uch screen to display the charms, tap Search , and then tap the search box.
NOTE: An external flash drive is re qu ired to perform this procedure . 1. If possible, bac k up all personal files. 2. Shut down the tablet. 3. Connect the extern al flash drive. 4. Press and hold the volume down b utton and the power button simultan eously to turn on the tablet and di splay the Startup menu.
To use the Start screen: 1. Swipe from the right ed ge of the touc h screen to display the charms, and then tap Settings . 2. Tap Change PC settin gs in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and then tap General from the PC settings screen. 3. Scroll down the ri ght side.
11 HP BIOS Settings Using HP BIOS Settings HP BIOS Settings controls communication betw een all t he input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives, display, ke yb oard, mouse, and printer).
