Safety precautions The following p recautions ensure the p roper use of th e printer and preven t the printer from b eing damaged. Fol low these precautions at all times. ● Use the power su pply voltage spec ified on the na meplate. Avoid overlo ading the print er's electrical outlet wi th multiple devices.

The front panel Your printer's fro nt panel is located on the front of the printer, in the ce nt er. It has the following important function s: ● Assists you in troublesho oting issues ● Is u.
9. Power key - To turn the printe r off or on, it also has a light to indicate the printer's status. If the power key light is off the printer is off. If th e power key light is blin king green, the printer is starting up. If the power key light is green on , the printer is o n.
The printer's internal prints The internal prints give various kinds of informat i on about your printe r. They can be reque sted from the front panel with out using a co mputer. Before requesting an y internal print, check tha t the printer a nd the paper are re ady for printing.

Choose which connection method to use The following me thods ca n be used to conne ct your printer. Connection type Speed Cable length Other factors Ethernet Very fast; varies according to netw ork tr.
TIP: A USB connection may be faster than a network co nnection, but the cabl e is limited in length and it is more difficult to share the pri nter. NOTE: The use of non-certified USB cab les can lead to connectivity problems. Only cables certified by the USB Implementor's F orum ( http://www.
Connect to a network (Mac OS) You can connect your prin ter to a network un der Mac OS X by using the following methods: ● Bonjour/Rendezvous ● TCP/IP NOTE: The printer does not support Ap pleTalk. Before you be gin, check your eq uipment: ● The printer should be set up and on.
4. Open the Mac OS X HP Designjet Installer . 5. Follow the instructi ons on your screen. 6. The printer software is installed, including the printer dr iver and the HP Utility. 7. When the s oftware h as been in stalled, th e HP Print er Setup A ssistan t starts automatica lly, to s et up a connection to your printer.
TCP/IP connection 1. Go to your printer' s front panel an d ma ke a note of the printer's URL (see Access the Embedded Web Server on page 27 ). 2. Insert th e HP Start-Up Kit CD into your CD drive. 3. Open the CD icon on your desktop. 4. Open the Mac OS X HP Designjet Installer .
9. Continue following th e instructions on the scr een. Wh en you reach the Printer Queue Created screen, click Quit to exit, or Create New Queue if you want to connect anot her printer to th e network. 10. When the HP Printer Setup Assistan t has finish ed, you can remove the CD from the CD drive.
NOTE: The use of non-certified USB cables can le ad to connectivity p roblems. Only cables certified by the USB Impl ementor's Forum ( http://www.usb.org/ ) should be used wi th this printer. 8. Shortly afterwards, a print queue is cr eated automatically for your printer.

Introduction This chapter describes variou s printer settings that the printer administrato r may wish to control as soon as a new prin ter is assembled and re ady for use.
Turn nesting on and off (T1200 series only) Nesting means auto matically printing images or document page s side by side on the pa per when feasible, ra ther than one after the other. This is d one to avoid wasting paper. See Nest jobs to save roll paper (T1200 series only) on pa ge 60 .
Turn usage information on and off The printer can send usage information pe riodically by e-mail. You can request this in the fol lowing ways: ● In the HP Utility f or Wind ows: select Settings > Accounting . ● In the HP Utility fo r Mac OS: select Configuration > Printer Settings > Configur e Printer Settings > Accounti ng .
Control access to the printer From the Embedded Web Server, you can se lect Setup > Security to control access to the printer in various ways: ● Specify separate administrator and gue st password.
4 Personalizing the printer ● Turn the printer on and off ● Change the langu age of the fron t-panel disp lay ● Access the HP Utility ● Access the Embed ded Web Server ● Change the lan guage.
Turn the printer on and off TIP: The printer can be left powered on without wasting energy. Le aving it on improves response time and overall system reliability. When t he printer has not been used fo r a certain period of time (the default time is de termined by Energy Sta r), it saves power by going into sleep mode.
Change the language of the front-panel display There are two possibl e ways to change the lang uage of the fron t-panel menus and messag es. ● If you can understand the current front-panel display langua ge, select the Setup menu icon , then Front panel options > Select language .
You can see your prin ter's IP address (192.168.1. 1 in this example) on the front panel' s status screen. If you have followe d these instructions b ut failed to get through to the Embedded Web Serve r, see Cannot access the Embedded Web Server on page 174 .
Change the front-panel display contrast To change the con trast of the front-pa nel display, select the Setup menu icon , then Front panel options > Select disp lay contrast , and enter a valu e using the Up or Down key. Press the OK key to set the value.
You have various ot her options available from the Connectivity menu icon. ● USB : view information about the USB conn ection ● Jetdirect EIO : view information, configure and reset the Jetd irect.

General advice CAUTION: Before starting a paper load ing process, ensure you have enou gh room aroun d the printer, both in front and behi nd. CAUTION: Make sure the printer wheels are locked (the brake lever is p ressed down) to prevent the printer from moving.
Load a roll onto the spindle 1. Open the roll cover. 2. Remove the black e nd of the spindl e from the pr inter, then the blue end . CAUTION: Be sure to remove the black end first. Removing the blue en d first could damag e the black end. WARNING ! Do not insert your fingers into the spindle supports duri ng the removal process.
5. Slide the new roll on to the spindle. Ma ke sure the paper type is oriented as sh own. If i t is not, remove the roll, turn it 1 80 degrees and slide it back on to the spindle . There are label s on the spindle showing the correct o rientation. NOTE: From the back of the prin ter, the blue sto ppe r is inserted into the right-side holder .
2. Select Paper load . 3. Select the roll that you want to load. If the roll you have sele cted is already loaded, you have to wait while it i s automatically unloaded.
8. Rest the blue end of the spindle on the right side roll holder. 9. With both hands, p ush the spindle into both roll holders at the sa me time. 10. If the edge o f the roll is not straight or torn (som etimes due to tape used to h old end of the roll ), pull the paper slightly a nd cut a straight edge .
11. Insert the e dge of th e paper int o the pr inter. WARNING ! Do not push your fingers inside the printer's paper pa th. TIP: When loading the upper roll, avoid inse rting roll pa per into the cut-sheet slot. If you do so, the printer beeps and the front panel asks you to remove the paper.
14. If the leadi ng edge of the paper has no bar code, the fron t panel prompts yo u to select the paper category and type. TIP: If you have load ed a paper type whos e name does not appea r in the paper list, see The paper type is not in th e driver on page 137 .
2. Select Unload paper . 3. Select the roll that you want to unloa d. 4. You may need to open th e roll cover. Roll out of paper procedure If the end of the pap er is no longer attach ed to the core, use the following procedure. 1. If you have alre ady started the un load process, pre ss the Cancel key on the front panel to cancel that procedu re.
3. Select Paper load . 4. Select Load sh eet . 5. If a roll is already loaded, yo u ha ve to wait while it is automatically unlo aded. In the T1200 series only, the roll is n ot unloaded, but withdrawn to the standby positio n, so that it can be printed o n again without reload ing as soon as the shee t paper has been un loaded.
7. When prompted by the fron t panel, i nsert the sheet into th e cut-sheet slot on the right side of the printer. Load your sheet aligned wi th the load line a nd insert until the paper will not continue; wi th thicker sheets, you feel resi stance. WARNING ! Do not push your fingers inside the printer's paper pa th.
2. Select Unload paper . 3. Select Unload s heet . The sheet unloa ds out of the front of the printer, eith er catch it manually or allow it to fal l in the basket. View information about the paper To view the loaded paper information , press the View information key or on the front panel.
Paper presets Each supported pape r type has its own characteristic s. For optimum print-quality, the prin ter changes the way it prints on each different paper type . For example, some ma y need more ink and so me may require a longer drying time. So the printer must be given a de scription of the requiremen ts of each paper type.
To move the paper, sele ct the Paper menu icon and then Move paper . You can move the pa per forwards by pressing the Up key on the front pa nel, or backwards b y pressi ng the Down key. When the paper is positioned as you wan t it, press the OK key. Maintain paper To maintain pape r quality, follow the recommendations below.
Turn the automatic cutter on and off To turn the printer's paper cutter on or of f: ● From the HP Utility for Windows, select the Settings tab and change the Cutter opti on in Printer Settings > Advanced . ● From the H P Utility fo r Mac OS , select Configuration > Printer Settings > Advanced and change the Cutter option.

The uses of a multiroll printer A multiroll printer can be usef ul in several different ways: ● The printer can automatically switch be tween di fferent paper types according to your needs. ● The printer can automatically switch be tween di fferent paper widths according to your needs.
Here are some settings that might b e used in typical situations: ● With different paper types loaded: ◦ Type is : select the pa per type you require ◦ Sourc e is : Au tomatica lly select / Pred.

Create a print job In order to print something, you mu st send it to the pr inter. This c onstitute s a print jo b, which i s entered into the pr inter's print queue. There a re two main ways of se nding a print jo b to the printer: ● To print directly from a progr am, use the p rogram's Print command as u sual.
Select print quality The printer has var ious print- quality options beca use best-quality printing requires some loss of speed, while fast printing implie s some reduction in print quality. Therefore, the stan dard print-qu alit y selector is a slider that allows you to choose between quali ty and speed.
NOTE: The paper size specified h ere should be the pa per size in which the document wa s created. It is possible to rescale th e document to a different si ze for printing. See Rescale a print on page 55 . ● In the Windows driver dialog: select the Paper/Quality tab, then se lect your paper size fro m the Docu ment Size li st.
● In the Mac OS X 10.4 PostSc ript Prin t dialog ( PostScrip t prin ters): select the Finis hing panel and then Layout . ● On the Embedded Web Server's Su bmit Job page (T12 00 series): select Advanced settings > Paper > Layout/Margins .
You can see a list of available shortcu ts; select the one that matches the kind of job you wan t to print. The driver options are now adjusted to sui t your job. You can either print immed iately, or examine the settings to check that you agree with them.
Rescale a print You can send a n image to the printer at a certain size bu t tell the printer to rescale it to a different size (normally larger). This may be useful: ● If your software does not sup.
To turn merge on, go to the front panel and select the Setup menu icon , then Printing preferences > HP-GL/2 options > Enable merge . You can set the merge op tion from your software in some applicati ons . Sett ings in your softwa re ov e rride the front-panel settings.
● On the Embedded Web Server's Su bmit Job page (T12 00 series): select Basic settings > Print quality > Standard option s > Speed . ● Using the fr ont panel: sel ect the Setup menu icon , then Printing preferences > Print quality > Select quality level > Fast .
If you have a high-resolution image If your image has a re solution greater th an the rend ering resolution (which you can see in the Custom Print Quality Options box under Wind ows), prin t sharpness ma y be improved b y selecting the Maximum Detail option.
You can request printing with no margins in the following ways: ● In the Windows driver dialog: select the Paper/Quality tab and pre ss the Margins/La yout button. Then select Borderless . ● In the Mac OS Page Se tup dialog (T120 0): select a paper size name tha t includes the words “no margins”.
To print crop li nes with nested jo bs (see Nest jobs to save roll paper (T1200 series only) on page 60 ), you must select a differ ent option: ● In the Embedd ed Web Serve r: select Setup > Printer settings > Job ma nagement > Use crop lines wh en nest is enabled > On .
1. Direction of paper flow 2. Nesting off 3. Nesting on 4. Paper saved by nesting When does the printer try to nest pages? When both of the following are true: ● The printer is loade d with roll paper, not sheet pa per. ● The printer's Nest option is not turned off.
● All pages must be in one or other of the followin g two groups (th e two groups cannot be mixed in the same nest): ◦ HP-GL/2, RTL ◦ PostScript, PDF, TIFF, JPEG ● JPEG and TIFF pa ges with resolutions g reater than 300 dpi may n ot nest with other pages in some cases.
NOTE: If you protect a roll, then late r unload the cu rrent rol l and load a new one, the new roll remains protected. You ar e protecting the roll numbe r , not one specific roll of paper. That roll nu mber will remain protected until you cancel th e protection.

Introduction Your printer has been engineered with adva nced hardware and software features to ensure predictable and depe ndable results. ● Color calibration for consistent colors. ● One gray and two b lack inks provide ne utral grays on all pa per types.
You can check th e color calibration status of th e cu rrentl y loaded pape r at any time by pressin g the View information key on the front panel. The status may be one of the following: ● PENDING: the paper has not been calibrated.
Color management from printer drivers Color management options The aim of color manageme nt is to reproduce co lors as accurately as po ssible on all devices: so that, when you print a n image, you see ve ry similar colors as when you view the same image on your monitor.
NOTE: This option is availabl e only when printing an HP-GL/2, Po stScript or PDF job. It will work correctly only when printing on plain, coate d or heavyweight coated pape r. ● In the Windo ws HP-GL/2 or Po stScript driv er dialog: select the Color tab, then Printer Managed Colors , th en select Printer Emulation from the Source Profile list.
● The lightness slider simply makes the whole print lighter or darker. ● The color sliders can be used to fade or emphasize each of the primary colors in the p rint. The primary colors may be red, green and blu e; or cyan, magenta an d yellow; depending o n the color model used in the image.
● The lightness slider simply makes the whole p rint lighter or dark er. This slider is availabl e in the same window as t he other grayscale controls, exce pt under Mac OS X 10.4, where it is avail able by selecting Lightness and Hu e . ● The zone definitio n sliders can be use d to define what yo u mean by highlig ht, midtone and shadow.
Emulation not only prov ides the closest matc h that ca n be achieved on your printer; it also gives cl ear information on ho w close the emula tion is to the original spot color.
● Japan Color 2001 Un coated uses the Japan Color 2001 specification for type 4 (uncoated) paper. It is designe d to produce quality sepa ration s using 3 10% total ink coverage, po sitive film and uncoated pape r. ● Japan Color 2002 Ne wspaper uses th e Japan Color 2002 for Newspapers spe cification.
T1200 PS options (with PostScr ipt or PDF jobs) ● Default CMYK source profile : you can choose from a sele ction of CMYK source profiles recognized by the prin ter. Default: Europe ISO Coated FOGR A27 . ● Rendering intent : you can se lect the rendering inte nt.
Color management from the front panel You can color-calibrate the loaded pa per type from the front pane l by selecting the Im age Quality Maintenance menu icon , then Calibrate color .
T1200 PS options (with PostScr ipt or PDF jobs) ● Select CMYK source prof ile : you can choose from a sele ction of CMYK source profiles recognized by the prin ter. Default: Europe ISO Coated FOGR A27 . ● Select rendering intent : you can select the rendering intent.

Print a draft for revision with the correct scale This section demonstrates how to print a draft for revision with the correct scale from Adobe Acrobat. Using Adobe Acrobat 1. In the Acrobat window, bring the mouse cursor to the bottom left corner of the document pane to check the plot size.
3. Press the Properties button and the n select the Paper/Quality tab. 4. Choose whatever Document Size and Print Quality you want to use. If you want to define a new custom paper size, press the Cust om button. 5. Select the Features tab, and then Autor otate .
6. Click OK , and check that the print preview in the Print dialog box se ems correct. Print a project This section demonstra tes how to print a proj ec t from Autodesk Design Review, AutoCAD and the printer's Embedded Web Server. Using Autodesk Design Review Autodesk Design Review offers the Use HP Instant Printing o ption.
2. In the Print d ialog box, check th e Use HP Instant Printing box. You can select your printe r and paper size here, or in the next window. 3. Ensure that the printer and paper size are correct, then click OK to start printing. Enabling HP Instant Prin ting from the Batch Print Wizard 1.
2. In the Welcome box , click Ne xt . 3. Select the DWF files to print, then click Next . 4. Use the Shift key if you want to select multip le files to configure. Then click Print Setup , and the printing configuration w ill be applied to all the files you have selected.
5. In the Print d ialog box, check th e Use HP Instant Printing box. You can select your printe r and paper size here, or in the next window. 6. Ensure that the printer and paper size are correct, then click OK . The paper size is automatically preselected.
8. Save or start the ba tch print job. Using HP Instan t Printing ● Make sure Use HP Instant Printin g has been select ed. To print, click the Print icon in the toolbar or select File > Print . Choose your preferred printing settings an d click OK .
Using AutoCAD 1. The AutoCAD window can show a model or layout. Normally a layout is pr inted ra ther than the model. 2. Click the Plot icon at the top of the windo w.
4. You can see further options by pressing the circ ular button in the lower righ t corner of the window . NOTE: The Quality option here does not refer to the fin al print quality but to th e quality of AutoCAD viewpo rt objects that are se nt for printing.
6. Select the Device and Document Settings tab, and pre ss the Custom Properties button. 7. In the Paper/Quality tab, check the Show preview be fore printing bo x, and select th e paper type th at you inte nd to use .
9. If you intend to p rint on roll paper, you must deci de where the printe r should cut the pap er. Press the Margin s/Layout button and select Clip contents by margins . 10. Select the Features tab, then select the Autorotate option. If you have a T1200 series printer, select the Crop lines option also.
12. When you have pressed the OK button in the Plot window, the printer will construct a print preview (T1200 series on ly). Using the Embedded Web Server to submit files (T1200 series only) From the HP Util ity or the Embedded Web Server, select Job Center > Submit Job .
● TIFF (T1200 PS only) ● JPEG (T1200 PS only) ● HP-GL/2 ● RTL NOTE: When you print to a file, the file should be in one of the above fo rmats, but its name may have an extension such as .plt or .prn . If the files are not in one of these format s, they will not be printed successfully.
2. Click the Plot icon at the top of the windo w. 3. Ensure that the correct printer is selected, then press the Properties button. 4. Select the Device and Document Settings tab, and pre ss the Custom Properties button.
5. In the Paper/Quality tab, check the Show preview be fore printing bo x, and select th e paper type th at you inte nd to use . NOTE: If you select nei ther the paper source n or the paper type, th e printer will not prin t on any protected roll (see Roll protection (T1200 series only) on page 62 ).
9. Select the Features tab, then select the Autorota te option. If you ha ve a T1200 serie s printer, select the Crop lines option also. Autorotation can he lp to avoid wasting pa per, and the crop lines will show you wh ere to cut the pap er after printing .
11. When you have pressed the OK button in the Plot window, the printer will construct a print preview (T1200 series on ly). Using Adobe Photoshop 1. Select File > Page Setup > Printer , select your printer and click OK .
2. Choose from the avai lable paper sizes. If you do not fin d the paper size that you intend to use, sele ct Printer > Properties > Paper/ Quality > Custom > Paper Size . Enter the width, the length and the name of your custom paper size.
4. Select Print > Properties . In the Document Properties window, select Paper Source , Paper Type and Print Quality . 5. Press the Margins/Layout button. In this example you can select Borderless because you have already selected a photo pa per (this option is only enabled with photo and glossy papers).
6. In the Color tab, the default color ma nagement option is Printer Mana ged Colors , and this is the correct option because you have al ready selected Let Printer Determine Colors in Photoshop. Print and scale from Microsoft Office This section demonstra tes how to pr int and scale from Microsoft Office.
2. Select Properties > Features > Print docume nt on to scale the document to a particular size. 3. Select the Paper/Quality tab, then select Paper Source and Paper Type . 4. Select Margins/Layout , then select Clip conten ts by marg ins to keep the size.
Using Project 1. Select File > Page Setup > Print . 2. Select your printer's na me, then Close . 3. Select Page Setup , and choose the Paper Size you want.
4. Select Optio ns to go to the printer driver . The default options in the Paper/Quality tab are probably suitable : Paper source : Printer auto select and Paper Type : Any . 5. Select Featu res > Print document on to scale th e document to a parti cular size.
2. Select the Page Layout tab, then Size , and choose the paper size you want. 3. Select the Office Butt on, then Print > Properti es to go to the printer driver.

Introduction The job queue management options described in this ch apter are available for the following printers. ● T1200 series: all options in this chapter ● T770 HD: front panel options only .
NOTE: The job queu e page does not a utomatically update . Job preview (T1200 series only) The printer samples all incoming jobs and g enerates a JPEG file that can b e served as a preview of the job. This preview is availabl e for a ll languages suppo rted by the printer: the T1200 PS supports PDF, PostScript, HPGL/2, RTL, TIFF and JPEG.
There are thre e options you can select: ● When After Proces sing is selected, the p rinter waits until the wh ole page has bee n processed and then it s tarts to print. T his is th e slowes t setting but ensures the best print quality i n large or complex prints.

About the ink cartridges Ink cartridges store the ink an d are connected to th e printheads, which d istribute the ink on the paper. To purchase additional cartrid ges, see Accessories on page 128 . CAUTION: Observe precautions when handling ink ca rtridges because they are ESD-se nsitive devices (see the Glossary on page 187 ).
CAUTION: Do not try to remove an ink cartridg e while printing. CAUTION: Remove an ink cartridge o nly if you are rea dy to insert another one . CAUTION: Make sure the printer wheels are locked (the brake lever is p ressed down) to prevent the printer from moving.
4. Pull the cartridge straigh t up. NOTE: Avoid touchin g the end of the cartrid ge that is inserted into th e printer, as there may b e ink on the conne ction. NOTE: Avoid storing partially used ink cartridges. 5. The front-panel d isplay identifies the missing in k cartridge.

6. Ensure the end of th e blue handl e catches the wire loo p on the near side o f the carriage. 7. Lower the handle to re st on the carria ge cover. When all the p rintheads have been inserted correctly and a re accepted by the printer, the printer beeps.

If you would like to start the load process ag ain, cance l the process on the front pane l and rewind the ro ll from the end of the spind le until the edge is removed from the print er. NOTE: If the roll has beco me loose around th e core, the printer ca nnot load the pa per.
NOTE: For glossy paper, it is important to use a glossy paper type, as matte black ink does not print well on gloss y paper. Transparent or translucent paper If your paper is a tran sparent film (for ex ample, a transparency), se lect paper type Film > Transparent/Clea r film .

I don’t like jobs being put on hold for paper. Can I prevent it? Yes, this can be done from the front panel: see Paper mismatch action on page 21 . I set the option “Paper mi smatch action” to P.
The paper has jammed When a paper jam occurs, you normall y see the Possible paper jam message in the front- panel display. 1. Power off the printer at the front panel and also switch it o ff at the rear. 2. Open the window. 3. Try to move the printhead carriag e out of the way.
4. Lift the blue leve r as far up as it will go. 5. Carefully re move any of the ja mmed paper that yo u can lift up and out from the top of the printer. CAUTION: Do not move the p aper sideways, as it could damage th e printer. 6. Rewind the roll. If the paper is stuck and cann ot be rewound further, cut it from the roll.
8. Lower the blue lever. 9. Close the wi ndow. 10. Switch on the printer. 11. Reload the roll, o r load a new sh eet see Paper handlin g on page 31 . NOTE: If you find that there is still some paper causing an obstruction within th e printer, restart the procedure and carefully remove all piece s of paper.
The printer displays out of paper when paper is available If the roll has become loose from its core, it will no t feed correctly and the pri nter will not load the paper. If possib le, tighten the pape r to its core or load a n ew roll. Prints do not fall neatly into the basket ● Ensure the basket is correctly installed.
Recalibrate the paper advance Accurate paper advance is i mportant to image qualit y because it is part of controlling the proper placement of dots o n the paper. If the paper is no t ad vanced the proper dista nce between printhea d passes, light or dark bands app ear in the print and image grain may increase.
4. Select the percentag e of change fro m –100% to +100%. To correct light b anding, decrease the percentage. To correct dark banding, increase the perce ntage. 5. Press the OK key on the front pa nel, to save th e value. 6. Wait until the front panel displays the status screen and re-print your print.

Alternatively, or if you have other print qu alit y problems, you can continu e reading this chapter. Horizontal lines across the image (banding) If your printed image su ffers from added horizo ntal lines as shown (the co lor may vary): 1.
Lines are too thick, too thin or missing 1. Check that the paper type you have load ed corres ponds to the pap er type selected in th e front panel and in your software. To check on the front pan el, use the View information key . 2. Check that you are using app ropriate prin t-quality settings for your p urposes (see Printing on page 49 ).
1. The problem may be inherent in the image. Try to improve the image with the a pplication you are using to edit it. 2. Check that you are using app ropriate print-quality settings. To reduce the risk of scu ffs and scratches: ● Handle prints carefully. ● Avoid stacking prin ts on top of each othe r. ● Catch your prin ts as they are cut fro m the roll and do no t let them fall into t he basket.
Clean the plate n with a soft cloth. Clean each ri b separately without touc hi ng the foam between the ribs. Black ink comes off when you touch the print This problem may be caused by prin ting with matte black ink on glo ssy paper. The printer will not use matte black ink if it knows that the paper wil l not retain it.
Vertical lines of different colors If your print has vertical bands of differ ent colors along it: 1. Try using thicker paper, cho osing from the re commend ed paper types su ch as HP Heavywei ght Coated Paper and HP Super Heavyweig ht Paper. See Order paper on page 12 9 .

● If you have defined a custom page size with very narrow margins, the p rinter may impose its own minimal margins, clipping your image slig htly. You may want to consider u sing a larger paper size, or borderless p rinting (see Select margins options on page 52 ).
A PDF file is clipped or objects are missing In older versions of Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reade r, large PDF files could be clipped or lose some objects when printing with the HP-GL/2 and HP RTL dr iver at high resolution. In orde r to avoid such problems, upgra de your Adob e Acrobat or Adobe Read er software to the la test version.
First look at the up per part of the print (part 1). Eac h colored rectangle should be a unif orm color without any horizontal lines across it. Then look at the botto m part of the print (part 2). F or each individua l colored pattern, check that most of the dashe s are present.
4. If the problem remains, try cle aning the pri nthead drop detector. The printer n ormally notifies you when this is necessary, but it may be worth trying even if the prin ter has not sugg ested it. See Clean the pr inthead drop de tector on page 165 .

Cannot insert an ink cartridge 1. Check that you have the correct type of cartri dge (model number). 2. Check that the colored label on the cartridge is the sa me color as the l abel on the slot. 3. Check that the cartridge is co rrectly oriented, with the letter or letters marking the cartridge la bel right-side up and re adable.
4. Clean the electrical connections on the backside of the printhead with a lin t free cloth. You can carefully use a mild rubbing alc ohol if moistu re is needed to remove re sidue. Do not use water. CAUTION: T his is a delicate process and may dam age the printhead.
1. Turn off the printer at the fron t panel. 2. To avoid an electri c shock, switch the p rinter off and unplug it. 3. Open the window. 166 Chapter 17 Tro ubleshooting ink cartridge and prin thead iss.
4. Find the print head drop dete ctor beside the stor ed printhead carriage. 5. Remove any debr is blocking the printhead dr op detector. 6. With a dry lint free cloth, wipe the surface o f th e drop detector to remove any no n-visible debris. 7. Close the wi ndow.
8. Plug in and switch on the printer. 9. Power the print er on at the front pan el. Align the printheads Precise alignment be tween printheads is essential for accurate colors, smoot h color transiti ons and sharp edges in grap hical elements.
4. Ensure the window is closed, as a strong lig ht sou rce near the printer during p rinthead realignment can affect alignment. 5. The process takes about six minutes. Wait un t il the front-panel disp lay shows the process complete before using the printer.
Scanning errors during alignment If the alignment process fails, a Scanning prob lems message appears on th e front panel. T his means that the alignment ha s not completed successful ly . Therefore the prin ter is not aligned a nd the alignment sh ould be repeate d before printing with good image quality.

The printer will not start If the printer will not start (the front panel is bl ank or the diagnostic LEDs are all off), you are recommended to repla ce the firmware, in the f ollowing way. 1. Go to the Knowled ge Center (see Knowledge Cent er on page 180 ) and download the firmware.
The printer seems slow Here are some possible exp lanations. ● Did you set the print-quality to Best or Max Detail ? Best-q uality and maxi mum detail prints take longer.
Cannot access the HP Utility If you have not done so already, please read Access the HP Utility on page 27 . 1. From the front panel, select the Connectivity menu icon .
A file system check is taking place; it can take up to 40 minutes. Please wait until it finishes. CAUTION: If you turn the printer off before the file system check has finished, the file system could be seriously damage d, making the printer 's hard disk unusable.
