9 2 Opening and Closing the HP Netserver Introduction This chapter describes h ow to the rem ove the top cover, front bezel, an d the air duct f rom t he HP Netserver LP 1000r. WA RNING Before removi ng the top cover, alw ays discon nect the power cord and un plug telephon e cables.

If the HP Netserver is operating, log off all u sers and shutdow n the operating system .

Chapter 2 Opening and Closing the HP Netserver 14 Removing the A ir Duct The air duct directs air from the fan on to the heatsinks of both proces sors. The air duct also restricts access to both processors and all th e DIMMs, and mus t be remov ed for fu ll access.
15 3 Installing Mass Storage Devi ces Introduction The HP Netserver L P 1000r comes standard w ith an IDE CD- ROM and a f lexible disk drive. The Netserver will accept up to three Hot Sw ap SCSI hard disk dr ives (HDD) in special moun ting tray adapters.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 16 • IDE Devices o The embedded IDE con troller is an En hanced-IDE dual chan nel controlle r and provides tw o connectors (IDE- 1 and IDE-2) for IDE devices. Refer to Figure A -1," System Board Lay out," in Appendix A, "Specifications.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 17 • SCSI Drive Addressing o The addresses of th e SCSI drives are autom atically assign ed by the drive bay location in the ch assis. Refer to Figure 3-1. No SCSI ID softw are settings or jum pers are required if us ing a HP NetRAID Controller board inserted into the only PCI slot.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 18 Boot Priority The Netserve r's boot order should be consi dered w hen s electin g a boot devi ce. This is especially im portant if you are in stalling a board that requires an early num ber in the boot order.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 19 CA UT ION To p revent damag e to the Hot Swap SCSI h ard disk drives, don't us e a HVD (high v o ltage differen tial) DAC controller.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 20 Installing Hot Sw ap Hard Drives Use this section to install the SCSI hard drives in the Hot Sw ap dr ive bays. CA UT ION Protect the drive from static electricity by leaving it in its anti-static bag un til you are ready to install it.

If th e filler panels are left out of em pty drive bay s while the Netserver is operating , therm al damage and/or ex cessive EMI could occu r. 2. Rem o ve the SCSI driv e from its protective pack aging and open the ejector arms as shown in Figure 3-3.
Chapter 3 Installi ng Mass S torage Devices 22 CA UT ION To prevent snapping off the ejector arms do n ot apply excessive p ressur e. 5. Close the ejector arm s by rotating each one back into place. See Figu r e 3-4. 6. Verify the tab on each ejector arm en gages th e edge of the drive bay as you close it.

Ensu re you f o llow these in structions carefully to prevent h a ndling damag e, such as head s laps or head actuator unl ocking.

27 4 Installing Additional Memory Introduction The HP Netserver L P 1000r's ma in m emory is implem ented us ing f our mem ory slots on the sy stem board and i t support s up to 4 GB (1 GB x 4) of m emory . T he Netserv er uses only 3.3V, 168-pin, 133 MHz, bu ffe red, SDRA M DIMMs and ships with at least one 256 MB DIMM.
Chapter 4 Installing A dditional Memory 28 Memory Installation Guidelines • The HP Netserv er LP 1000r only uses 133 MHz (PC 133) buffered SD RAM DIMMs, w hich are electrical ly diff erent from the EDO an d PC100 SDRAM me mory modul es used in oth er HP Netserver m odels.

Chapter 4 Installing A dditional Memory 31 CA UT ION The mem ory m od ules are sensitive to static electricity and can be easily damaged by improper h andling. Do th e followi ng wh en handling the access o ry k it: • Leave the m emory m odule in the anti-static cont ainer until you are ready to install it.
Chapter 4 Installing A dditional Memory 32 WA RNING Ensure y o u hold the DIMM tightly as you push it into the slot. It is possible to turn or bend the DIMM slightly w hile inserting it, w hich w ould d amag e or break the DIMM socket.

45 6 Installing an Additional Processor Introduction The HP Netserver L P 1000r ships w ith at least on e processor on t he sy stem board (prim ary processor sock et – CPU 1) and the volt age regu lator modul es (VRMs) are embedded in the syst em board.
Chapter 6 Installi ng an A dditi onal Processor 46 • Use only processor upgrade kits w ith the sam e HP product number. • This ensures the processor type, clock s p eed, and cache size are th e same. • Ensure a proces sor is installed in the prim ary processor (C P U 1) socket before installin g a processor in the secon d ary s ocket (CPU 2).
Chapter 6 Installi ng an A dditi onal Processor 47 Installing a Second Processor This section provides the instructions for installing a second processor and its accompan ying h eatsink on the sys tem board. CA UT ION The processo r is sensitive to static electricity and can be easily damaged by impro pe r hand ling.
Chapter 6 Installi ng an A dditi onal Processor 48 Refer to Ch apter 2, " Opening and Closing th e HP Netserver," to gain access to the system board . NOTE It is not necessary to remove th e system board from th e Netserver to install the second processor (CPU 2) .
Chapter 6 Installi ng an A dditi onal Processor 49 NOTE If y ou are upgradin g the second processor to a f aster processor speed than th e primary process or, the primary processor m ust also be chan ged. Both processors m ust hav e the sam e product num ber, which includes the sam e clock speed, cache size, and FSB speed.

These processors rely on the internal setting s within the processors and do not rely on extern al switch settings on the system board.

Proper placemen t is vital for safety and operating efficien cy. For m ore information, refer to "Rack Config uratio n Tools" later in this chapter.

Once the outer-rails are correctly mounted, th en the HP Netserver L P 1000r can be installed in to the rack.

Chapter 8 Rack Mounting the HP Netserver (4-Post) 80 Placing the HP Netserv er in the Rack Use this procedure to insert the HP Netserver into the outer-rail assem b lies moun ted in the rack. Once the Netserv er is in the rack, then y ou can connect the cables to the rear of th e Netserver.

Slowly move the Netserver chassis into the outer-rail assem blies until the Netserver is completely in the rack. See Figures 8-6. The securing brackets on th e front of the Netserv er should stop the ch assis from g oing all the w ay into the rack.
Chapter 8 Rack Mounting the HP Netserver (4-Post) 82 1. Position the Bezel in fron t of the HP Netserver LP 1000r as show n in Figu re 8-7. 2. Push in on the bottom to engag e the pins, allowing it to rotate up. 3. Push the bezel in at the top to engage the spring latches.
83 9 Connecting the Monitor, Key board, Mouse, and UPS Introduction Use the procedures listed here to conn ect the peripheral devices to the HP Netserv er LP 1000r. 1. Connect the monit o r, key board, and mous e to the HP Netserver L P 1000r using the connections prov ided on the rear of the chas sis.
