The follow ing tab le lists the size, guarant eed imageabl e area, and feed edge (the edge of the m edia drawn int o the print er first ) of all supported med ia: The guarant eed imag eable a reas for p rint media on your Q MS 16 60E Print System are not cente red vertical ly on their re spective pag es and may vary 1 / 16 " (1.
The enhanced ima ge-area allo ws you t o print to t h e edges of 1 1x17, 12x19, A 3, A 4, f ull l edger , and universal me dia. ▲ Caution : Due to print engine constraints, full-sheet imag es may be slightly skewed on the page.
The printer support s 17-34 lb (64-128 g/m 2 ) labe ls i n the multipurpose tray . Use only paper recomm ended f or laser printers, such as Ham me rmill Laser Print. Thicker paper , such as Xerox 4024 (28 lb [10 5 g/m 2 ]), is also ac ceptable in the m ultipurpo se tra y .
Improperly stored medi a increases the chance of paper jams during printing an d can drast ically aff ect the prin t qua lity of the prin ted page. Keep med ia in good condit ion by storing it In its .
3 Pro fessional Pri nting About t ypeface s and fonts T y po graphy terms T y pe face classificati on Resident typef aces, font s, and sym bol set s.
This chapter defines com mon term s used in the description of fonts and typefaces, and displays the print e r ’s resident typ efaces. Many of the terms and phrases used in desktop publish ing are derived from the language of profession al printe r s and type setters.
One way of classifying the diff erent t ypefa ces is to group them into the f ollo wing categ ories: A serif is a decorative li ne or tail on the ends of the strokes of a letter . Serif s, usually on the lower half o f a letter , have also been T imes Roman ref erred to as f eet or curlicues.
The terms “mon ospaced” and “fixed-pi tch” refer to a typeface whose characters all have uniform and equal spacing. These typefaces are useful f or spreadsheet s and other document s with colum nar data. Monospacing is the opposite of proporti onal spacing.
A scalabl e font is one in whi ch each charact er ’s dot pat tern (bitma p) is generated from a mathem atical representation (or outl ine) of the character . Scalable fonts elimi nate the need to store many differe nt font sizes. Point size refers to the heigh t of a proportional ly spaced typefa ce.
Orientat ion is the d i rection of the print or image on a page. Port rait orientat ion reads from left to right , across the narrower dim ension of the page. Land scap e orienta tion also reads from left to right but places the print across the wide r dim ension of the page.
derive from paint ing; a portrait is usually a vertical view while a l and- scape is usually a horizontal view . The followi ng 39 Post S cript fonts are resident in your printer . See your QMS vendor if you are inte re sted in expanding your printer's typeface fam ilies.

The Fra me Buffer me mory client holds rasterized or bit map ped images of page faces which are ready to be sent to t he print engine . A f rame holds the conte nts of each single page imag e. If you are uncertain about how to configure your printer ’ s memo ry , use only the Admi nist ratio n/M em ory/Frame Buffer menu.
» Note: The printer does not all ow you to choose feat ures that d o not work with t h e amount of memo ry currently i nstalled. Using this opt ion d oes not change t he m edia size. It just ensures t hat you have enough mem o ry allocated to the appropriat e clients to print on the requested m edia size.
The K Mem for PSHe a p mem ory client , listed on the status page as Heap, is the number of kilobyt es of RAM dedicat ed to the PostS cript emulat ion interpret er . This mem ory cli ent holds do wnloade d Po st- Script em ulat ion fonts, operato rs, and form s.

A calibrati on page helps you test and maintain optim al print quality . The calibrati on image contain s a gray-s cale chart that l ets you check print densit y and gam m a corre ction to get the best po ssib le gray scal- ing from your printer .
Y ou can select t he input bin (tray or cassette) from which the printer pulls media when print ing the header page. A t railer page is a separator page that prints after a print job to help users sort out the ir jobs and, if requested, ident ify print job errors.
Y ou can select t he input bin (tray or cassette) from which the printer pulls media when print ing t he trailer pag e. Y ou can co nfigure a number of prin ter ti meout sett ings to set a lim it t o the amou nt of time the printer waits to perf orm a certain task.

The follow ing illu strat ion shows the relat ionshi p betwee n screen fre- quency, gray levels, and print resolution. As the screen frequency increases, t he number of gray le vels de crease s. The number of gray levels that your printe r can produce depends on the screen frequency and the print resolutio n.
Often i n scanned images, gray scaling may be too light or dark to show details clearly . Using gamma corr ection on a gray-s cale image is similar to using a graphic equalizer on a home stereo; the range of gray levels is adj usted for the best possible i mage .

the print jobs are completed , leading to virtu al memory er rors. If not enough mem ory is allocated to the PS heap, the job cannot print. Increasing the memo ry alloca ted to this client allows m ore complex jobs to print and increases t he number of fonts th at can be do wn- loaded to v irtual memo ry .
Normally , this memory client doesn’t need to be changed unless you plan to download m any differen t non-PostS cript fonts . Also known as Host Input and K Mem for Spool, this m emo ry client stores incoming dat a from all the i nterf aces until the emulat ion can process the p rint job.
The am ount of mem ory need ed for the disk cache client is depend ent on the size of the disk, the number of disks, t he num ber of subdirect o- ries on each disk, a nd the am ount o f mem ory dedicated to caching . As long as the d isk cache is enabled and there is enough mem ory in the d isk cache, al l disks are ac cessib le.
This fiel d shows the size of t he physical RAM in stalled in the p rinte r . If a hard disk is installed and disk sw apping is enabled (Admini strat ion/ Memory/ En able Disk Sw ap ), thi s f ield also gives the size of avail able virtual m emor y .
» Note: Ch unk collatio n begins aut omatically af ter 50 p ages regardl ess of how much memory is available to the display list client . Since confi guring mem ory is not an exact science, it may be help ful to see how others in various printi ng environm ent s have allocate d their printer mem ory to meet th eir print ing nee ds best.
When sending print jobs through the serial and parallel protocols, some applicat ions and the ir printer drivers append an end-of -docu- ment com m and (E OD) to each prin t job to ensure th at e ach file print s corr e ctly .
Multi ple print jobs wi th li t tle or no time delay and with no EOD command s have been sent t o the printer and the m essage win- dow displays only one active job. Multiple prin t jobs of the same print er language have been sent to the printer and th ey print on the same page.

The main advant age of using the B inary and Fixed Binary PS protocol modes when sending bina ry data is that these modes compress the data stream allowing your document s to be smaller so you can send smaller jobs to the printer . For example, some device drivers can for- mat bit map im ages as binary data instead of as A S CI I hex data.
