Taking Care Of Y our Prin ter 23 T aking Care Of Y our Printer Your prin ter will prod uce high qual ity print job s if it is well taken care of. Period ic cleanin g, handling th e printer p roperly, and using the co rrect print er supplie s, such as paper and r ibbons, wil l ensure op timum perfor mance.
24 Chapter 1 Print er Overview Output Control Depending on the activ e emulation, the p rinters hav e the followin g output control features: • Four mode s for printing text: 1. Correspon dence (H igh Density) 2. Data Proc essing (DP) ( Standard Dens ity) 3.
Graphics Options 25 Graphics Options The PGL an d QMS emulatio ns allow you to create and sto re forms; ge nerate logos, b ar codes, and e xpanded cha racters; and cr eate other grap hics. Alphanum erics and bar code data a r e added as the form is print ed.
26 Chapter 1 Print er Overview Line Matrix Printing Your prin ter is an impa ct printer ; it creates c haracters by pri nting ink do ts on paper. The dots are prin ted on an inv isible matrix m apped in printe r memory (see Figure 2). Dot i mpressions are m ade by an ar ray of steel ha mmers mounted on a rapidly os cillating shu ttle.
Printi ng Sp eed 27 After a lin e of characters is pri nted, the paper ad vances to the fi rst dot row of the next p rint line. This creates a num ber of blank rows between line s of charac ters, depend ing on the pr int mode and l ine spacing y ou sele cted.
28 Chapter 1 LineJet Pr int Server LineJet Print Server The LineJet Prin t Server allows yo u to attach printe rs on a local area network (LAN) rat her than attac hing them dire ctly to a host s ystem.

241 14 Interfaces Overview The printe r interface i s the point wher e the data line fr om the host c omputer plugs into the pr inter. The interfac e processes all c ommunications signa ls and data to and from the hos t computer. It consists of a pr inted circu it board assembl y (PCBA) and a connec tor for the data cable from the host comp uter.
242 Chapter 14 Centronic s Parallel Interface Centronics Parallel Interface The Centron ics interfac e enables the pr inter to oper ate with contr ollers designed for buffered Ce ntronics printe rs. The lengt h of the data ca ble from the host c omputer to the pr inter must no t exceed 15 f eet (5 meters) .
Centronics Parallel Interface Configuration 243 Data Strobe . Carries a low true, 100 ns min. puls e from the ho st that clocks data into t he printer. Paper Instruction (PI) . C arries a VFU cont rol signal fr om the host with t he same tim ing as the data lines.

280 Appendix B Pa per Guidelines Metho ds Of Forms At t achme nt Any meth od of attachme nt (staples, c rimps, gluin g, etc.) must be designed in a way that does not permit air to be trapped between cop ies of a form. Hard or wire brads and staples must not be used.
Chaff Content 281 Cut-T o-Tie R atio A commo n cut-to-tie ratio for bon d forms is 4:1 (t hat is, 80% cut to 20% ties). This value i s dictated chie fly by the app lication program under which the form runs. Lo wer cut-to-tie rati os will yiel d better form ha ndling, but s tacking may suffer d ue to increa sed stif fness of the p erforations.
