4 Cancel (X) : Whenever the Ready light blinks, press t o cancel a print job. Contro l-panel menus Use the contr ol-panel menus To gain acces s to the control- panel menus , use the fol lowing steps. 1. Press Menu . 2. On the HP Co lor L aserJet CM1015 MFP, p ress Left arrow or Ri ght arr ow to nav igate t he li stings. On the HP Co lor L aserJet CM1017 MFP, p ress Up arrow or Down arrow to naviga te the listi ngs.

Ligh tne ss Increases or decr eases the background color in a copy. Grayness Increases or decreases t he color in the color copy o f a black and white o riginal.

Archive print When print ing pages that will be stored for a long time, t his option sets the printer to a mode that reduces toner smearing and dusting.

Printer driver re commendations A printer drive r allows printi ng from an a pplicati on. Select a pr inter driver based on th e MFP usage . ● To print o nly i n black and wh ite, us e the PCL6 printer black and whi te dr iver. ● The PCL6 printer driver is r ecommend ed t o take ful l adv antage of all MFP fe atures .
Inst all the PostSc ript driver using Add Printer The Pos tScript dr iver can onl y be instal led usin g the Micros oft Win dows Add Printer wizard. For additio nal help, se e the Micros oft help or go to http://www.

Install Macintosh p rinting system software for d irect connections (USB) Inst all the A pple P ostScript driver that came with the M acintosh comp uter to u se the PPD fi les. To insta ll the print ing system so ftwar e 1. Connect a US B cable be tween the USB port on the MFP and the USB por t on the comp uter.
Macinto sh printer drivers The MFP c omes w ith pri nter-driv er sof tware that uses a pr inter l anguag e to communi cate wi th the MFP. Printe r dr ivers p rovide acces s to M FP f eatures, such as print ing o n custom -siz ed p aper, r esizi ng docume nts, and in serti ng water marks.
Use feat ures in the Mac intosh p rinte r driver Create and use presets in M ac OS X Use pr esets to save th e curre nt drive r setti ngs f or reuse. To crea te a pre set 1. Open the prin ter driver (s ee Open the printer dr ivers ). 2. Select t he print setting to use.
To print multiple pages on one sheet of paper 1. Open the print er driver (see Open th e printer dr ivers ). 2. Click the Layout pop -up menu . 3. Next to Pages per Sheet , select the number of page s to prin t on eac h sheet ( 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, o r 16).

HP Device Con figura tion (Mac OS X V10.3 and Mac OS X V10.4) HP Dev ice C onfigurat ion is a sof tware pro gram t hat provi des a ccess to in forma tion ab out the M FP (for exampl e, inform ation about sup plies statu s and MFP setti ngs). Use the HP Dev ice Config uratio n to monitor and mana ge the MFP fr om the computer .
Solve co mmon Macin tosh p roblems This section lists pro blems tha t can occu r when usin g Mac O S X . Solve Problems with Mac OS X Table 5-1 Probl ems with Ma c OS X The prin ter dri ver is not liste d in the Pr int Setu p Util ity. Cause Soluti on The MFP soft ware has not b een installed or was installed incor rectly.
The printer driver does not automatically set up the selected MFP in the Print Setup Utility. Cau se Soluti on The PPD f ile is cor rupt. Delete th e PPD file from the following hard -drive folde r: Library/ Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/<lang>.
When connected with a USB cable, the MFP does not appear in th e Printer S etup Utility a fter the M FP is sele cted. Cause Soluti on ● Ensure there are not too many U SB devices drawing powe r from the chain. Disconnect all of the devices from the chain, and connect the cable directly to the USB port on the host computer.

Load trays Use sp ecial prin t media, such as en velopes, la bels, HP Lase rJet glossy paper , HP La serJ et Ph oto paper, and tr anspa rencies o nly i n tray 1 and t ray 2. NOTE Tray 3 is an acce ssory. It is referr ed to as optional tra y 3 in this guid e.
2. Feed print media into tray 1 wit h the s ide to be pr inted down , and the t op, sho rt edge in f irst. Mak e sure that t he m edia is in serted far enough into the M FP for the paper-f eed mechan ism to gr ab the me dia. NOTE There is a short pause befor e the p aper is pick ed up .
NOTE Instruc tions ar e the same for loadi ng me dia in tray 2 and o ptional tray 3 . 1. Pull tray 2 or o ptional tr ay 3 out of the MFP and rem ove any paper. 2. Move the r ear guid es to m atch th e paper si ze. Tray 2 and opt ional tr ay 3 acce pt severa l stand ard paper siz es.
4. Slide th e medi a-widt h guid es slig htly wid er tha n the prin t media. NOTE Load a max imum of 1 0 enve lopes in to tra y 2 w ith the fl aps on the rig ht side, the side to be prin ted fac ing up, a nd with the s hort edg e lead ing in to the MFP.
5. Load the m edia. NOTE If this is specia l pap er su ch as labe ls, tra nspar encies, HP L aserJet glos sy paper, HP Laser Jet Pho to pape r, and letter head o r printe d form s, load it w ith the s ide to be printe d on facing u p and th e top ed ge towar d the f ront of the tray.
7. Slide the tray in to the MFP. The back of the tra y protrude s from the back of the MF P. NOT E When prin ting on both s ides, see P rint on both si des of the pap er for l oadin g ins tructi ons.

Control print j obs When c hangin g print se ttings , follow the hiera rchy of h ow changes are pri oritized . (Note that the na mes of comman ds and dial og boxes migh t vary depending on the s oftware program.
Settin g Description NOTE An Administrator or i ndividual user can set the HP ToolboxFX to direc t the MFP to pull from a tray that is pre-co nfigured for a spe cified Type or Si ze . This is helpful when f requently printing on the same type of media; a dedicat ed tray is already pre- configured for printing.
Print from Windows 1. Load the p rint med ia. 2. On t he File menu of yo ur app lication , cli ck Page Setup or a similar command . Ens ure the s ettings are corre ct for this document. 3. From the File menu, cl ick Print , Print Se tup , or a sim ilar com mand.
Print on both sides of the paper NOTE For 2-s ided pri nting, load a p re-prin ted for m and l etterhe ad int o tray 1 face -up w ith th e top edge o f th e page load ed into the MFP. Load pr epri nted forms and l etterhead i nto tray 2 an d tray 3 f ace-down with the top e dge at the front of the tray.
NOTE Flip paper befo re continu ing. 3. After the job is f inish ed print ing, r emov e any bl ank paper as pro mpted by the c ontro l pan el. Li ft the printed stack fr om the output bin and insert the pr inted st ack wi thout rota ting th e stack over into the tray t hat was used for the f irst part of the job.

Overview The M FP prov ides care fully designed and tested color t abl es to p rovide smooth , accu rate c olor rendi tion of all prin table co lors. HP pro vides on line t ool s to he lp bus inesses of al l si zes w ith their color printi ng. HP' s Offi ce Col or Pri nting Center ( http:// www.
Manage co lor options Setting color options to Automatic typica lly pr oduces t he b est pos sible print qualit y for co lor docum ents. However , in so me situ ations, yo u might want to pr int a co lor docum ent in gr ayscal e (black and shade s of g ray) or t o chan ge one of the MFP' s color optio ns.
Edge Control The Edge C ontrol setting de termi nes how e dges are rend ered. Edge Contro l consi sts of two compon ents: Adap tive Halftoni ng and Trap ping. Ad aptive H alftoni ng increas es the edg e sharpnes s. Trapp ing re duces the e ffect of co lor-pla ne mis registr ation by sli ghtly overlappi ng the edg es of adja cent objects .
Neu tral Gr ays The Neutral Grays settin g deter mines the met hod for cr eating gray colo rs tha t are used in text, gr aphics, and ph otogra phs. ● Black Only gener ates neutr al colo rs (gr ays and blac k) by using o nly b lack to ner. This o ption guara ntees that neu tral color s do not have a co lor ca st.
Match colors Matchin g MFP output c olor to the c omputer s creen is c omplex b ecaus e MFPs and computer mon itors use differ ent method s of produc ing color . Monitors dis play colo rs by light pi xels usin g an RGB (re d, green, blu e) color pr ocess, but MF Ps print col ors using a CMYK (cyan, mage nta, yell ow and black ) proc ess.

The MFP can contin ue to pri nt using the c urrent pr int cartr idge until th e co ntrol panel displa ys a messag e ins truct ing car tridg e re placemen t.

Proble m Cause Soluti on Poor print quality or t o ner adhesion The paper is too moist, too rough, too heavy or too smooth, or it is emboss ed or from a faulty paper lot. Verify that the appropriate media type was selected in the printer driver. Try another k ind of pape r, between 100 and 250 Sheffield, 4% to 6% moisture content.
