2 Getting to know your tablet Finding your hardware an d software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your tablet: 1. On the Start screen, type control panel , and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, tap Device Manager .
Front Component Description (1) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wirele ss signals to comm unicate with wireless local area networks (WLANs). (2) Webcam Records video and captures photograp hs. Some models allow you to video conference and ch at online using streaming video.
Back Component Description (1) Volume down button To decrease speaker vo lume, press the bottom edge of the button. (2) Volume up button To increase speaker volume, press the top edge of the button. (3) Camera Records video and captures photographs. To use the webcam, on the Start screen, tap the Camera app.
Top edge Component Description (1) Power button ● When the tablet is off, press the button to turn on the tablet. ● When the tablet is on, press the button briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the tablet is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep.
Bottom edge Component Description (1) Speakers (2) Produce sound. (2) Serial number and product number Provide importa nt information to identify your tablet. When contacting support, you will probably be asked for the serial number, and possibly for the product number or the model number.
Labels The labels affixed to the tablet provide informa tion you may need wh en you trouble shoot system problems or travel internationa lly with the tablet. IMPORTANT: F or help finding these locations, refer to Getting to know your tablet on page 4 .
3 Connecting to a network Your tablet can travel with you wherever you go. But e ven at home, you can expl ore the globe an d access information from millions of websites using your tablet and a wireless network connection. This chapter will help you ge t connected to that world.
To share folders or l ibraries on the sa me network: 1. From the Windows desktop, op en File Expl orer . 2. Tap the Share menu on the Librarie s window, and then tap Specific people . 3. Type a name in the File Sharing box, and then tap Add . 4. Tap Share and then follo w the on-screen instru ctions.
Setting up a WLAN To set up a WLAN an d connect to the In ternet, you need the following eq uipment: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cable) (1) and high-spee d Internet service purchased from an .
Connecting to a WLAN To connect to the WLAN, follow these steps: 1. Be sure that the WL AN device is on. 2. From the Windows desktop, tap the network status ic on in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. 3. Select yo ur WLAN fro m the list.

4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP table t as an entertainme nt hub to socia lize via the webcam, enjo y and manage yo ur music, and download and watch movies. Or, to m ake your tablet an even mo re powerfu l entertainment center, connect externa l devices like a monitor, projec tor, or TV, or sp eakers and headphones.
To connect wireless headpho nes or headsets to your tab l et, follow the device manufacturer's instructions. WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal inju ry, lower the volume setting before puttin g on headphones, earbuds, or a headset. To see the tablet scre en image on a hi gh-definition TV or monitor, connect the hig h-definition device according to the fo llo wing instructions. 1. Connect one end of th e HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the tablet. 2. Connect the other en d of the cable to the high-definition T V or monitor.
5 Navigating the screen You can navigate the tablet screen by using touch gestures. Using touch screen gestures A touch screen tablet allows you to control it ems o n the screen directly with your fing ers.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful fo r moving the pointer u p, down, left, or right on a page or image. ● Place two fingers on the screen and th en drag them in an up, down, left, or right motion. Pinching/zooming Pinching and zooming allow you to zoom out or in on images or text.
Rotating (select models only) Rotating allows you to turn i tems such as photos. ● Anchor the forefinger of yo ur left hand on the object you want to rotate. Using you r right hand, slide your forefinge r around in a swe eping motion from 1 2 o’clock to 3 o’clock.
Left-edge swipe The left-edge swipe reveals your ope n apps so that you can switch to them quickly. ● Gently swipe your finger inward from the le ft edge of the display to switch between apps. Without lifting your finger, swipe ba ck toward the left edge to reveal a ll open apps.
Top-edge swipe and bottom-edge swipe ▲ From the Windows Start screen , gently swip e your finger from the top edge or th e bottom edge of the display onto the scre en to disp lay app command op tions that allow you to customize ap ps. IMPORTANT: When an app is active, the top-edge gesture varies depending on the app.
6 Managing power Your tablet can operate o n either battery powe r or external power. Wh en the tablet is running on battery powe r only and an AC powe r source is not available to charge the b attery, it is importa nt to monitor and con serve the battery ch arge.
Setting password protection on wakeup To set the table t to prompt for a password when th e tablet exits Sleep or Hibernation, follow the se steps: 1. On the Start screen, type power options , and then select Power Options . 2. In the left pane, tap Require a pas sword on w akeup .
Finding battery information To monitor the sta tus of your batt ery, or if the ba ttery is no longer holding a charge, run Battery Check in HP Support Assistant. To access batter y information, on the Start screen, type support , select the HP Support As sistant app, and then select Battery and performa nce .
Resolving a low battery level when th e tablet cannot exit Hibernation When the tablet lac ks sufficient power to exit Hibernation, follow these step s: 1. Connect the AC adapter to the ta blet and to ex ternal power. 2. Exit Hibernation by pressin g the power button .
To test th e AC adapter: 1. Shut down the tablet. 2. Connect the AC a dapter to the tablet, a nd then plu g it into an AC outlet. 3. Turn on th e tablet.
7 Maintaining your tablet It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep your tablet in optimal condition. This chapter provides information about improving the performanc e of your tablet by running tools su ch as Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to internal componen ts, do not spray cleaning ag ents or liquids directly on any tablet surfa ce. Liquids dripped on the surface can perman ently damage internal components. Cleaning the display Gently wipe the di splay using a soft, lint -free cloth moistened with an alcohol-free glass cleaner.
8 Securing your tablet and information Tablet security is essential for protecting the co nfidentiality, integ rity, and availabil ity of your information.
Setting Windows passwords Password Function User password Protects access to a Windows user account. Administrator password Protects administrat or-level access to tablet contents. NOTE: This password cannot be used to access Setup Utility (BIOS) contents.

Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the tablet or an un successful installation, do wnload and install a BIOS update only when the tab let is connected to relia ble external power using the AC adapter.
